The Devil Wears Prada is 18 years old this year. Time flies and that film still has legs and it’s still a cultural reference today. At the SAG Awards this year, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt reunited on stage to present an award and it was one of the biggest moments of the night. People still f–king love that movie and a lot of those fans have wanted a sequel. I thought it would never happen… but apparently the sequel is a go, according to Puck. It will be set in the same Devil-Wears-Prada universe in the present day, with Runway Magazine faltering in the changing landscape of print media. Emily Blunt and Meryl will return to their roles but so far, Anne Hathaway hasn’t confirmed anything.
For years, there have been dreams of a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, the 2006 classic starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 roman à clef about working for Anna Wintour during the heyday of the magazine business. Over the weekend, Elton John’s musical adaptation starring Vanessa Williams began previews in Plymouth, England, in advance of a West End opening in October. Now I hear that the film’s Oscar-winning producer, Wendy Finerman, has convinced Streep and Emily Blunt to sign on for a sequel to the hit film. (I don’t know if Anne Hathaway, who said in April that she doesn’t think a sequel would happen, is involved.)
Anyway, I’m told that Disney has given Finerman the okay to hire the original film’s screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, now that Streep is in. The storyline being discussed focuses on Miranda Priestly, Streep’s Wintour-esque protagonist, at the end of her career, facing the decline of traditional magazine publishing. She’s forced to go head-to-head with her former assistant, Blunt’s Emily Charlton, now a high-powered executive at a Kering or LVMH-style luxury group, whose advertising dollars Priestly desperately needs. (A rep for Disney declined to comment.)
I would be fine with a film focused completely on Emily-versus-Miranda, but they will need a third party, whether that’s Anne Hathaway or someone else. It feels like if Anne comes back, it would be in a smaller role, right? Wasn’t the point that Andi was going to be a real journalist? What if Andi is a fashion-business reporter covering the drama between Emily and Miranda? I’m just giving these ideas away for free. Anyway, I’m not surprised that Blunt and Streep are willing to come back to these characters. I will absolutely watch it too, I just hope it’s not a huge bummer.

There was already a sequel, called revenge wears prada, over ten years ago. Wasn’t great, but Andy and Emily were bffs in it, and I loved that for them.
My first thought was “no not ever good movie needs a sequel that dilutes it’s success” but reading the plot…I’m kind of interested! I’d enjoy seeing Emily as a big fashion executive.
My guess is it’s about the two of them, but Anne’s character pops up in like a brief cameo.
Hope Stanley Tucci is in it also.
I just learned maybe two months ago that Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt are in-laws. so maybe she can talk him into it, lol.
I miss Emily Blunt’s red hair.
@Kaiser Hope you get credit bc those are great ideas! I’d watch this sequel bc I really liked the first movie.
They all had great chemistry in the film and still do when reunited at awards shows. I’m down because Meryl and Emily are great actors and so is Anne if she were to return.
I am excited about this one. It would get me into a theater.
But the real question on everyone’s mind: will Gisele Bündchen reprise her role ???
TDWP’s book author wrote two sequels–Revenge Wears Prada and When Life Gives You Lulemons. It sounds like this movie will be using some of the latter’s plot.
