James McAvoy tries to join The Beard Club, fails

One of my favorite guys has now joined The Beard Club! Sort of. This is James McAvoy at the London premiere of The Last Station. Now, beards seem like the biggest trend for Hollywood men right now. The “out-of-work beard” might have replaced the Croc. Jon Hamm, Brad Pitt (sort of), Robert Pattinson, Eli Roth, George Clooney, and now James McAvoy have all been working some kind of excessive facial hair as of late. I don’t know what to make of McAvoy’s beard though. It looks a little weak, doesn’t it? Like he doesn’t have enough testosterone. Maybe he’s just one of those guys who can’t grow a full beard. I kind of believe that if you’re incapable of growing a glorious beard, you shouldn’t do this patchy stuff that makes you look like your dirt-lip just expanded.

But here’s the thing: I love facial hair on men. I love a sharp goatee, I love a full beard, I love a little scruff. But the facial hair must look, smell and actually be clean for me to like it. Like, Brad Pitt’s goatee thing is nasty, because it looks dirty and I can only imagine what it smells like. On the other hand, if a Jon Hamm’s full beard got a few crumbs in it, I think I could manage. Because, you know, our love-making would knock those crumbs right out. James’s beard doesn’t do anything for me – I’m neither disgusted nor turned on.

Other than his denial for The Beard Club, McAvoy’s having a great week. He announced yesterday that he and his wife (and costar in The Last Station) Ann-Marie Duff are expecting their first child together. They’ve known each other since 2003, and they were married in 2006. And now they not only have a baby coming, but they get to go a promotional tour together! I’m not sure what to make of The Last Station, honestly. It looks a little boring. And James’s sketchy beard is in it too. Here’s the trailer:

He’s a sweetie… but boys, unless you can grow a lush 70’s chia beard..a la Jon Hamm, keep your bics handy.

I too love a great beard!

His beard does get a failing grade but he gets A’s at everything else! He is so darn cute especially with long hair!

YAY! A James McAvoy post! Hands down my favorite actor of the moment!

Okay, so the beard isn’t making me want to drop my panties, but as long as he doesn’t veer off into homeless shelter chic territory, I can deal.

And congrats on the kid. Whenever he talks about his wife he gets stars in his eyes. I hope he’s the rare type for whom it’s genuine.

I don’t like the reddish hue but I do love his new look in general. He looks like a hero from the romantic era- young Werther, Byronic loner etc.Delicate without being effeminate (swoon). OK, I need to go back to reality!

  6. texasmom says:

Weirdly, it makes him look REALLY young to me, as if he was an 18-year-old trying out a beard to see if he can do it. (He can’t.)

  7. Icecat says:

I like the beard on him. I think it’s sexy..

What is NOT sexy is Werewolf Pattinson’s beard.. He looked Uber Ugly…He should not have a beard period.

  8. anonymus says:

Icecat: Why don’t you grow a beard yourself and show it to us, Expert?

Pattinson at least can grow a full beard unlike some others.

  9. L says:

MMMMMMM James McAvoy. Whatever about being denied from the beard club, he’s in the hotness club. Love him.

  10. jajalove says:

Apparently you are not that much of a fan otherwise you would have known that the spent a couple of months in the Fall filming with a full (yes FULL)beard

  11. Bodhi says:

I love beards too. Facial hair sends we a swoonin’! My husband can’t grow a beard to save his life. Not even one as full as James’! His is red & blonde & whenever people comment on his lack of beard growing prowess (sp?) tells them that they just can’t see it b/c its the same shade as his skin!

  12. Madison says:

Guess you don’t know but James grew a full beard for “The Conspirator” that he filmed last fall for Redford:

  13. Mairead says:

It does make him look very young Texasmom! @ mila, since he’s a Scot, a bit of red in the beard is par for the course I’m afraid 😉 .

I’ll be interested in seeing their film because Anne Marie is an absolutely stellar actress in her own right.

  14. Zoe says:

I’m not a fan of beards, but McAvoy can’t take a wrong turn no matter what he does. The hotness shines through!

  15. Annie says:

He is too adorable! Can’t wait to see him be all daddy-like. I’ve heard him say he grows his beard out when he’s not working because of his baby face. Apparently, he’s more likely to get carded at a bar without it!

  16. tooey says:

It works for me; I just love this guy! The facial hair reminds me of Cilian Murphy’s when he woke up from the coma or whatever in 28 Days Later. MMMM

This is a gorgeous, sweet, talented, intelligent man no matter what his beard or hairstyle! Here’s to the Mc-Duff baby… (Another photo during filming of the Redford-directed Conspirator: http://www.jamesmcavoyfan.com/pictures/displayimage.php?album=382&pos=0)
