Keira Knightley looks like a bobblehead gypsy in Elle

keira1

Here is Keira Knightley on the cover of Elle Magazine’s March 2010 issue. First, a word about the styling: it’s crap. While I’m not Keira’s biggest fan, I do like her, and I do think she’s a very beautiful young woman, and this faux-gypsy styling makes her look unwashed, gross and heavy. And what the hell is up with those bangs? You are not 5 years old, Keira.

Anyway, Keira is promoting her London stage role in The Misanthrope, as well as her role in the film Last Night, which I’ve actually never heard of. It gets a limited release in March, and the film is described by IMDB as: “The story follows a married couple, apart for a night while the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he’s attracted. While he’s resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love.” Keira is the wife, Sam Worthington is the husband, and Eva Mendes is the past love. Sounds supremely boring, doesn’t it? Oh, well. Elle has some interview excerpts:

On her character in The Misanthrope: “Jennifer’s kind of a crazy mix of being a complete bitch—confident and terrifying—yet she’s incredibly young and is probably being exploited way more than she actually realizes.”

On criticism of her acting skills: “Oh, they still say that! Every time I do an interview with the English press, one of their questions is, ‘How do you feel knowing that everyone thinks you’re a sh-t actress?’ ”

On surrounding herself by people who tell her the unvarnished truth: “You have to be selective about the people whose advice and opinions you take. I know [my parents] would never tell me I was shit because they were trying to hurt me. It would always come from a very sincere place.”

On her upcoming film Last Night: “When we were making it, the arguments on set were just amazing about whether mental infidelity is better or worse than physical infidelity. There was a huge gender divide on the question. Every single woman said that mental infidelity is 10 times worse than [an emotionless assignation]. And most men I spoke with said that it’s the physical act that would be the ultimate betrayal.”

[From Elle Magazine]

People think she’s a “sh-t actress”? I don’t think that at all. Granted, she’s not Meryl Streep (who is, really? Besides Cate Blanchett), but I think Keira’s one of the more talented young actresses out there. And how rude is it that people in the UK say that to her? Obnoxious.

Regarding the whole mental affair/physical affair stuff: I think they both suck. If it’s an emotional or intellectual attraction, I might be more understanding, though. Probably because I think that you don’t always have control over who you’re drawn to emotionally. But you can still keep it in your pants.

This cover looks very strange. For one, her head looks like it was clumsily shopped onto her body at an odd, jutting angle. For another, the rest of the picture looks very “flat”–even the necklace looks like it was cut and pasted onto her shirt. I’m not a huge fan of her acting skills, but she has a face that photographs beautifully. It’s strange they would have to do so much manipulation.

  2. Bonfire Beach says:

The cover makes her look hunched over, as if they couldn’t fit her head on unless she stooped.

  3. snapdragon says:

    they photoshopped her neck away.

  4. Kim says:

Uh, yeah, totally. It’s cool to call her “unwashed, gross and heavy” but criticizing her acting? Now THAT’s rude.

  5. Susette says:

To be honest, I never thought she was all that talented. She just seems to play variations the same character – which I suspect is pretty much Keira. Maybe I just need to see her in more things.

I don’t mind her, though. At least she’s not annoying.

  6. Kaiser says:

I said the styling made her look unwashed gross and heavy, Kim.

  7. Sigh. says:

ITA with you Kaiser and snapdragon —

Making Knightly LOOK “heavy” is quite a feat. And did she not bring her neck with her to the photoshoot?

All of these pics are the same except the change in unfurnished rooms.

  8. k says:

She is a shit actress. Actually, that’s a little harsh. She’s overrated.

  9. Ruby Red Lips says:

Her head looks far too big for her body, she is completely underweight… very unhealthy even though she has a beautiful face

  10. tina says:

do gypsy’s typically wear oxford shirts and boyfriend blazers?

  11. p3rp3tu4 says:

Hmm. Well Crappy editing but she has great bone structure & lovely full “natural?” hair. I love the long natural locks vs. the tired flat droopy flat ironed looks that have been over done.

Her hair is SO Much better looking than the fake looking extensions so many seem to be wearing. It is ripping the hair off their heads & they don’t seem to care.

  12. Dolkite says:

I thought she was somewhat attractive when she was first in “Bend It Like Beckham”…it may have been the bobbed haircut, which I’m a sucker for. However, the last time I saw “Pirates”, I was surprised that I didn’t find her really attractive at all. It’s mostly because she’s so, so skinny that I couldn’t imagine her as really sexy at all. I’m not into porno, but the idea of, say, Christina Hendricks or Kate Winslet in a swimsuit sounds sexy to me, but I couldn’t imagine Keira really alluring in anything. She’s not unattractive, just totally sexless and bony.

  13. clare says:

Yikes, they did photoshop the heck out of an already beautiful woman who also photographs beautifully. Can’t an actress make the magazine editors sign an agreement that no photoshopping is allowed on their pictures?
IMO, Keira is a fine actress. I always enjoy her movies particularly the historical ones.

  14. filthycute says:

She needs a reduction on her lantern jaw.

  15. california angel says:

IMO her mannerisms and facial expressions are always a bit off and this perturbs me, however after seeing her in Atonement I can’t help but like her as an actress.

  16. lena says:

Kaiser, i know you probably didn’t mean anything by it, but some of the Roma people find the term gypsy offensive/racist…you may want to change your title…just google it to see what i’m talking about

  17. Maritza says:

She has that puckered lip look in all the pictures, do these women really think they look sexy posing like that? Jlo does it too, it’s so annoying!

  18. snowball says:

I don’t see anything unwashed-looking about the pics, and what’s wrong with bangs?

I don’t like the way they’ve styled her hair, all shoved forward onto her shoulders, because it’s making her look hunched over with no neck, which isn’t the way she normally looks.

Just my own opinion, the shirt/jacket combo she’s wearing on the cover all look too small. The jacket especially looks like it barely fits her. Where’d they find it, Baby Gap?

  19. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

I’m not getting the “Gypsy” thing at all? What’s Gypsy about this?

I just can’t stand the weird faces she makes trying to look sexy. Big ol head on an emaciated body, yum!

  20. Seer says:

Dolkite wrote: “She’s not unattractive, just totally sexless and bony.”

Men and women who look skeletal are unattractive. What is sexy about a body that looks malnourished, weak, and underdeveloped? What’s sexy about a person who chooses to starve or vomit in order to have a child’s body? And they seem so proud of that. They think their bones look sexy. They really do, ask people who are that skinny, and they don’t realize they’re taking away from their sex appeal.

Knightly would look so much more beautiful and sexy if her body was fuller and healthier. It’s disturbing to see photos of Knightly, because she looks like she’s literally starving.

  21. NicoleB says:

@p3rp3tu4 her hair probably has extensions just like EVERYONE in Hollywood…it’s just that her stylist knew what the hell they were doing….but having said that she I like Keira Knightly she has is a good actress (not the best) but that’ll come in time I’m sure….but seriously this whole trend of over photoshopping people is just ridiculous when most of the time they look better with out all the photoshopping.

  22. Ana says:

I think she’s harmless enough. I love the outfit, hate the hair and the pose. They could’ve done better. I agree that she looks like she is stooping.

As for the emotional vs physical cheating-I’ve experienced both and they both suck. Hard.

  23. MYOB says:

Did she have her overly shaved nose job built up or is is maybelline, I mean photochop?

  24. Catherine says:

I think she is adorable. Obviously I am in the minority here.

  25. dany says:

    …HAHA YOU’RE RIGHT.she rocks!…AND
any person who put a comment under mine saying that keira can’t act…is a snob as*****!

  26. archiepelago says:

She talks too fast…. she rushes in her speech and I’ve noticed that this is her speech pattern. It’s why I am not a fan of her acting. I always feel edgy watching her, like I can’t quite relax into it. I agree with whoever said she was overrated. She’s not terrible – she’s just not amazing.

She always seems a bit awkward to me but I think she is beautiful and is growing into her power. It must be tough being a kid and growing up in the media glare.

  27. Beck says:

I think she looks fine. What exactly is the problem with her bangs? She’s beautiful anyway.

  28. Solveig says:

Does this girl ever close her mouth?
Her features are nice, but that smug is hideous.

  29. Blint says:

I didn’t understand the comment about her bangs. Her hair isn’t terribly artful, but I don’t think the bangs are the problem. I agree the overall styling isn’t great and the angle makes her head disproportionately large, which it isn’t. But I don’t think she looks heavy.

People make comments about actor’s abilities all the time, and I’m convinced they often don’t know what they’re talking about. Sometimes they’ll over-praise, and other times they’ll trash a performance that isn’t bad at all. Unfortunately I think it has more to do with how well they like or dislike an actor than valid criticism.

  30. Mikunda says:

I guess this article in fact criticizes the “artistic” inspiration of the photographer and the person(s) who picked her wardrobe and makeup.

Keira is just playing another role and apparently she is good at it judging by the majority of the comments above. Cheers!

  31. Cheyenne says:

Knightley makes some unfortunate magazine covers. In September 2008 she did a Vogue cover with her hair hacked off looking like somebody sneaked up on her from behind with a weed whacker.

  32. Jaymie says:

    Where is her neck?

  33. DB says:

She’s a beautiful woman and a good – not great – actress. Why is everybody trashing her?

  34. Emily says:

How does this cover make her look heavy? Her arms look like matchsticks!

  35. Dani says:

“And what the hell is up with those bangs? You are not 5 years old, Keira.”

some people like bangs like that. i myself have bangs. it doesnt make you look 5, it’s simply a different hairstyle and considering all the crazy hair out there right now [whatever the hell rhianna is trying to do] its not bad at all.

maybe you just cant pull the bangs look off yourself, who knows

  36. Amy says:

everytime i see her her cheeks have sunk even more into her face. and yes she seems like a nice person, but she is wooden in some of her performances.

  37. pumak says:

    head too big…always

  38. Jag says:

The photographer and/or photoshopper should be fired. Keira photographs beautifully, but these are awful.

  39. Keira says:

I can’t believe you people could say such a thing your just jealous.
