Will John Mayer ever recover from his disasterous Playboy interview?

wenn2534173

Even though I think John Mayer is a racist, misogynistic, disgusting, closet-case, rancid douche for his out-of-control Playboy interview (Part 1 & Part 2), I have to admit, I’m enjoying the kind of creative headlines and coverage the situation has inspired. New York Magazine asked “Where Were You The Day You Learned John Mayer Has a Racist Penis?” and Pop Eater’s “John Mayer not a racist, just a guy who says stupid things”. Or perhaps HuffPo’s “John Mayer’s Penis Speaks! Hates On Black Women, Embraces White Power (VIDEO)”. But two of my favorites from today are Fox News’s “Has John Mayer’s ‘Hood Pass’ Been Revoked?” and People Magazine’s John Mayer: Scared Tweetless?”. The basic gist of all of this hand-wringing is that A) Lots f people are still pissed at Mayer; B) Very few people were buying his “apology” and C) Mayer needs some big-time image rehab if he wants to get out of this.

John Mayer shocked fans this week in a controversial interview with Playboy magazine in which he used the N-word and likened his sexual desires to that of a white supremacist. But despite a quick apology and explanation via Twitter, followed by an onstage breakdown during a Nashville concert, it appears his self-proclaimed “hood pass” may have expired.

“Whenever you use the N-word, there are going to be serious consequences,” an A-list Hollywood record executive told Pop Tarts. “People come back all the time from inappropriate comments, but this is a serious problem that could possibly hurt record sales and his public perception if it keeps blowing up. Mayer should do some sensitivity training, which might be a good start in bouncing back from this.”

Prior to the incident, which coincides with Black History Month, Mayer was often penned as a crossover artist. Over the course of his career, he had worked with a range of black music moguls including Jay-Z, B.B King, Herbie Hancock, Nelly, NaS and was even one of the few artists featured in last year’s Michael Jackson Memorial Concert. But experts speculate that he may have quite a bit of crawling to do to get back in the industry’s good graces after using such degrading language.

“His comments were as offensive as you can get,” a label insider said. “Some African-American artists will definitely stand their ground and just write him off. Mayer’s comments are not only unacceptable, they’re illogical and totally irrational for somebody who is as smart as he is supposed to be.”

The National Organization for African-American women was also “outraged” by the interview.

“The NOAW is outraged by the recent degrading and irresponsible statements made by recording artist John Mayer. His statements in regards to African-American women were disgraceful,” a rep said in a statement. “The use of the ‘N’ word was particularly offensive and vile. His outlandish statements are a slap in the face to the multitude of African-American people who are his fans and who have purchased his music.”

Mayer’s comments have understandably drawn criticism from the hip-hop community, with several artists taking to their Twitter accounts to express their thoughts.

“My man John Mayer must love the taste of his own foot,” rapper Talib Kweli Tweeted, while Noreaga apparently wrote “Dear John Mayer, black women don’t like u cause ur a a–hole.”

However The Roots’ Questlove was a little more forgiving.

“hmmm. ill give mayer a benefit of the doubt (remember how people misinterpreted my photo?) and assume that was a punchline gone awry,” he Tweeted on Wednesday. “lol then again on 2nd read….can’t wait to see spin on this. i swear his #1 demographic is the white dude black women would do in a second.”

Meanwhile other high-profile regular Tweeters like Diddy, Kanye West and 50 Cent have so far stayed silent on the issue. Mayer (who averages around 6-10 Tweets per day) laid low on Thursday, presumably to allow the storm to blow over.

Columbia records, the label that represents Mayer, declined to comment on the issue.

But despite the intense backlash, there is still hope for Mayer’s image to recover.

“I believe a lot of black artists will forgive him, they will move on,” Tarts’ label source said. “If [Michael Richards, who played] Kramer from Seinfeld was in a movie tomorrow that got critical acclaim, was the hit at Sundance, or if he had been in Avatar, people would have moved on. They wouldn’t have said, ‘We aren’t going to see ‘Avatar’ because of him.’ That is not only my belief, but it’s my experience.”

[From Fox News Pop Tarts]

By the way, Mayer didn’t just use the n-word, he also used the f-g word. He said it casually, too, when he was referring to Perez Hilton. So, yeah. People are still pissed, and will continue to be pissed until Mayer comes up with a really great song or something. Probably not, though. My guess is that it won’t be a career-defining debacle like, say, Mel Gibson’s anti-Semitic/anti-Sugart-ts drunken rant while being arrested. But Mayer’s racist, misogynistic faux pax reinforces the image many of us already had of Mayer as a disgusting douche bag who will say or do anything to get attention.

All he has to do is french kiss Piggy Perez Hilton again and it will all be rainbows and unicorns again. *barf*

  2. Popcorny says:

    Personally, I think it’s awesome.
I love when fakers expose themselves beyond what they can con/control.
We need more over-hyped celebrities to take themselves down off their own pedestals, deliberately or accidently, doesn’t matter (tho, accidently is certainly far more amusing).
This’ll stink and stick to John-boy like unwashed squat for a very long time.
Remember the adorable and beloved Kramer? … -be honest, what’s the first thing you think of when you hear his name now?
For me, it’s “words, Words, WORDS!!!”.

  3. Cinderella says:

He shouldn’t recover. I really think this guy has a few screws loose.

He should not be a star. It just feeds the insanity, even if some argue that he is a great musician.

Stick him back in the studio as a session player, I say.

  4. mollyb says:

I don’t know . . . I don’t see his core audience caring very much about any of this.

  5. lucy2 says:

I predict rehab any day now. That seems to be the only solution show biz has for jerks.

It’s a shame, he is a talented guy and has lucked out having such success, but he’s just such a horrific a-hole that it totally overshadows any of that.
I just want him to go away. I’m sick of him saying stupid stuff for shock value and to make himself seem oh-so-edgy. It’s lame, annoying, and getting very old.

  6. Stephie says:

Said it before… I wish he would refrain from speaking. Just play and sing John, then shut up. Please?

  7. multikultiMe says:

I so very much hope not!

  8. juiceinla says:

I just want to know- from the collective Celebitchy readership:

Who is likely to first recover from his epic deucebaggery by actually convincing us that he’s lost his ego and become a respectible, humble, kind generous human being-

    Kanye or Mayer?

    discuss?

  9. meeze says:

omg! he is so ugly, I can’t get over it. He looks like an ogre

  10. sassy says:

i don’t like that he took everything back. he was expressing his opinions and now he’s taking it all back because people don’t like what he said. what he said didn’t agree with me, but it doesn’t mean he shouldn’t say it because i don’t like it.

  11. Kaiser says:

Juice: At the very least, I buy it when Kanye apologizes for doing something douchey. Either Kanye’s a better actor, or he just has no idea how ridiculous he is, and is genuinely sorry when people get offended.

On the other hand, Mayer really just comes across as a psychopath.

  12. lrm4joy says:

i actually don’t think he really is a mysoginist or racist. i think he likes to try to spin those words/concepts on their head and use them to be cool. Shock value type of stuff….but he fails miserably every time…

I do think he has alot of issues though. repressed, for sure.

  13. andrea says:

he’s done, in my eyes. i dont care if he writes more great songs – i won’t be listening or buying.

  14. Sigh. says:

    Lookyhere Johnny-boy —

    1. get you one of them there “spiritual advisors” or a blues mentor to bring you in from the storm,

    2. secretly alert the media to “catch” you forlornly schleping around Haiti as some sort of “racism rehab,” totally deflecting to “more important things in the world” a la Lohan

    3. drag out a “longtime black friend” to explain that you were in a different place/misunderstood/high/misquoted/tricked on Larry King Live, no, Oprah (a female, BONUS!)

    4. donate to some charity that focuses on women/african-americans/homosexuals (all-in-one, BONUS!!)

    5. press conferences always give that “I am ashamed” feel (become short-o’-breath crying us a river, BONUS!!!),

6 Stay away from Kanye – HE CANNOT HELP YOU WITH THIS,

    7. Stay away from Mel Gibson – HE CANNOT HELP YOU WITH THIS

    8. Wipe that “I am so awesomely funny” look off of your mug – it cannot help you with this, and it’s not true, never has been,

    9. Call Adam Samberg — maybe he can lampoon you to both your advantage,

    10. AND THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT — WHEN YOU “REAPPEAR,” SING, DO. NOT. TALK. Close your mouth and take your medicine when you start your “Woe is Me” press junket…

  15. juiceinla says:

good point Kaiser on the sincerity… it has to be an element considered.

Sadly, I think only time will tell with these two… and we will suffer their deucebag-centric universes for a while.

btw- AWESOME monogramed velevt sport/smoking jacket JM…

  16. princess pea says:

I’m not in the majority, but I actually believe his explanation. He thought he would sound clever, and hipster-funny. He doesn’t seem to think before he speaks, and it gets him in trouble regularly. But, he also loves the attention. Everyone on the internet is talking about John Mayer today, so in a sense that interview was a total success. It remains to be seen what the backlash will be.

Honestly, once another star says something offensive, half of the people outraged will move over to the new target and forget they were ever mad at Mayer. ( @ JulieNewmar – I had actually forgotten about that, but I’m not really a fan so I don’t think of him often at all.)

@ juiceinla – I think Kanye, because his offense was a longer while back and people are getting annoyed with Swift now because she keeps winning stuff. But my question for you is: Which one will be first to screw up his attempt at image rehab with another douchbag move/statement?

  17. Popcorny says:

I was almost going to say something here about Kayne, how he acted a fool and was disgraced … but John way overtakes any of that because he what he did was to reveal some inner deep ugly of himself -and like someone else pointed out, he only retracted/apologized when his twisted thoughts were vehemently denounced.

  18. Kat says:

My guess is that it won’t be a career-defining debacle like, say, Mel Gibson’s anti-Semitic/anti-Sugart-ts drunken rant while being arrested. But Mayer’s racist, misogynistic faux pax reinforces the image many of us already had of Mayer as a disgusting douche bag who will say or do anything to get attention.

Help me understand here, Mel Gibson said a bunch of offensive things while dog drunk and being arrested, apologized and went to rehab and it is CAREER DEFINING? A man who starred in the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon films, made Braveheart and many other good movies is considered a pariah while John Mayer who has had a few hit songs over the past what, 7 years gets off scot free after saying the most egregous things about black people, gay people and black women not to mention oversharing about his ex girlfriends cold sober when he knew he was giving an interview? How is this fair? Neither of them gets a pass with me and that goes for Kanye (think’s he’s Jesus) West as well!

  19. Eileen Yover says:

I’m sure he’ll go to racist rehab and everything will be honkee-doree again. Those celebrities…they have a rehab for everything nowadays.

  20. Lady D says:

    @juiceinla,
You forgot Jon Gosselin. Discuss after gagging.

  21. Lenore says:

I am so very glad never to have heard a note of this so-called man’s so-called music.

What the hell do all those women see in this greasy, self-worshipping, juvenile little crapwit anyway? Seriously, what?

  22. audrey says:

he is lucky he was playing in the south when that article came out ( i am from nashville and it CAN be pretty racist).. I would imagine his audience is pretty white, so he had that safety net. now had he been playing at an urban area….

  23. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I don’t find it comparable to Kanye. What West did was rude, baffling and in very poor taste, but it’s not like his comments could have seconded as a campaign bid for Grand Dragon.

It must have been done to court controversial attention because:

    1) of course it is

    2) if you drop the f-word or the n-word in public, let alone on the record, there is going to be a stir, no exceptions. To say nothing of the filthy crap he spews about women, but that’s far from a new development and perhaps not to my credit, I pretty much dismiss any woman who would even entertain the idea of going with him, knowing that your cup size is going to end up on the 6:00 News when he decides you’re too old or not dumb enough to bask in his essence.

I think he’s a dumb kid who prides himself on having a hyper-verbose and somewhat outre sense of humour, but loses the thread when it comes to filtering. He’s not great at communicating his ‘humour’ effectively, so maybe he should just go home and practice his scales. He moonlights as a musician, I hear. Or maybe he can jam about it into his next thirty thousand Tweets, add some whine to that milquetoast.

    Oh, well.

  24. juiceinla says:

Lola, Lady D- good points! and “Sigh”- brought the “Mel” to the mix…

eggcellent, we have a foursome- Where’s Tiger?? (naw he doesn’t really fit with this group)

also Jo-mama- you are on to something, Didn’t Dave Chapelle clearly tell us unless you are black, you may NEVER use the “n-word”. case closed.

  25. juiceinla says:

Princess, you asked Which one will be first to screw up his attempt at image rehab with another douchbag move/statement?

Whew. Tough call I give 7-5 odds on Mayer. Kayne seems to only spout off when hes drinking.

  26. Sumodo1 says:

    He can go to hell.

  27. Novaraen says:

I hope he and his racist d*ck never recover from this. I am sick to death of his retarded full-of-himself tweets and interviews.

Now can we be rid of this douchenozzle?? Plz plz PLZ!!!

  28. Peach says:

I’m one of those crazy kids who believe that intent is more powerful than a word could ever hope to be.
And I’ve even been known to throw racist slurs around with my good friends for fun. My last boyfriend was Thai (I’m Arab) you wouldn’t believe the racial fun we had.

But that is with friends. Who know me. Who know I’d never mean anything actually malicious and my use of them is only to make a point of how silly stereotypes are.

I would never expect the World At Large to get my sense of racial humor, and thus would never unleash it on somebody when it wasn’t clearly in jest and they weren’t sitting right in front of me.

For Mayer to expect us all to read between the lines is egotistical bullshit at it’s very, very best. For him to think he’s edgy for throwing shit out…he needs to go look up the late great George Carlin. He was edgy with both heart and intelligence. Mayer never will be. He’s very Dane Cook, i.e. stop talking now you’re not funny or pushing the envelope. You, sir, are the box we are desperately fighting our way out of.

  29. kim says:

I loved this man. I bought all of his CDs even when I couldn’t afford them. Then he turned into a douche. Then he turned into a racist douche. I’m gonna break his CD’s. This is one black woman who just revoked his “hood pass” because I (naturally) have one (It’s attached to the degree I’ll be walking away with in May). And I’m glad his D is a white supremacist, because my vag is anti-douche.

  30. Maritza says:

People should stop going to his concerts and not by his cd’s, that would really teach him a lesson.

  31. Skipper says:

He’s just as bad as Kanye… a clueless, self-important, pleased-with-himself egomaniac… I hope his “career” doesn’t recover… his music sucks anyway and he can’t sing… hopefully he just gets lost for good. It’s unfortunate that these people believe we, the public, actually care what they have to say about anything, but the media reinforces that belief by giving what they say so much attention. If people stopped listening to and publishing these guys’ embarassing rants, then they would have no choice but to die off.

  32. Ally says:

In answer to your question, hope not. This guy was D list until he hooked up with JSimp. Then their united forces catapulted them to B-list for a while. Then B+ with Aniston. All tabloid celebrity.

His insecurity must come from awareness of his limited looks and talent, and actual claim to fame (the not-picky celebs he manages to date).

I wish he would also finally realize that when it comes to “wit”, he has an anti-ear. His attempts at snark and sarcasm just always end up offensive and unintentionally revealing of his true, ignorant, prejudiced (against women, other ethnicities) base nature. He just really needs to STFU, hopefully with his “singing” too.

TMZ being delighted with your farting skit does not make you the next Oscar Wilde.

  33. Sincerity says:

I stopped packing for my Mardi Gras trip to respond to this one!

As Jay-z said recently, “You have to live your life within the laws of the universe”. When you put negativity into motion it will come back to you. As an African American woman, I’m not bashing John Mayer for his taste in women, because as individuals, we like what we like; however, the manner in which he said it was very disrespectful to ALL WOMEN.

John Mayer is certainly crying out for psychological counseling because he has allowed his celebrity status to “CORRUPT” his “COMMON SENSE”. It’s not politically correct for an intelligent, well informed person to use the N-word in discussing African Americans in a “public forum” especially, if the person, in question, is NOT BLACK! He must be losing his mind because he works with musicians and producers who are BLACK!

Being a celebrity does not exempt you from the Golden Rule, “Do unto other as you would have them to do unto you”. Judging from his recent opinions, he does not respect women, Black people or himself. I don’t buy into him trying to be “witty” or “hip” because if that were the case, he could have avoided discussing his opinions in such a derogatory fashion. Too many high profile individuals have seriously crippled their careers bringing up issues relating to their personal prejudices. NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND SHOULD BE WILLING TO GO THERE! WHAT WAS JOHM MAYER SMOKING? CRACK!!!

  34. Sigh. says:

He calls himself a blues guitarist —
Man, he is gonna get A LOT of mileage/music outta this mess…

  35. fizXgirl314 says:

I think he was just trying to be funny… It’s not really a big deal… I make the most effed up jokes when I’m in a comfortable environment… granted, I know enough to “watch it” around strangers… but, seriously, not THAT big a deal… uhh… there, I’ve moved on… took me a second…

Although, I have to admit that when people say sexist things I am MUCH less inclined to forgive them… anything else *whatevs*

  36. MooMooMoo says:

I JUST WANT YOU TO LOVE ME *WAAAHHHH*

    Somebody please slap him!

  37. Trillion says:

Who is his core audience? I think it might be white frat boys who are sick of reggae. If so, his ticket and record sales won’t change. Those dudes are racist/homophobic and prob. think JM’s a hero for a) saying that crap and b) getting a leg over Jessica Simpson. Gross.

  38. Giz says:

Of course he’ll recover! He just acquired a new round of neo-nazi fans!

  39. LOVE ANGELINA says:

It will be a little awhile…until the next thing happens with someone else. I still like him and I am still really, really hurt and totally confused by how he expressed his self in the interview. I can’t make an excuse for him, he should have known better at his age.

  40. lin234 says:

Has anyone watched Parks and Recreation? lol Leslie Knopes says the best lines ever: Oh Jen, I really want you to be happy. Then she looks straight at the camera and says, “Stay away from John Mayer.” The best part is that this was written before his latest interview. If Swifty was thinking about having him as a potential boyfriend, this interview is the best gift to her mom.

This guy has no respect for women.

  41. I’m having an internal debate on whether he is worse than Tila…

  42. flourpot says:

He’s a Dave Matthews wannabe and he’ll never come close. DM has more elegance, respect, humanity and empathy in his big toenail than Jon has in his entirety. The quicker JM goes away, and brings his subpar music with him, the better. I lost a lot of respect for Jen when she lowered herself to his bed. Ew. Noone should ever be that horny. Someone buy that girl a vibrator. Stat!

  43. irishserra says:

Ugh. Whatever. Bottom Line: John Mayer wanted more publicity and he’s getting it. Period.

  44. Nikki says:

Honestly, I wondered what time of day this interview took place? Was he drunk? Was he still drunk from the night before?

@post #29 – cant read the name – you hit it girl

  45. Bete says:

Seriously, and I mean this with no ill will, but living in a country that has no notorious KKK media types, I had no idea who David Duke was until John Mayer opened his fat misshapen trap. I was on the floor laughing until I peed in my pants.
Then again, I haven’t read an interview like Mayer’s. How dumb must Jennifer Aniston be to even converse with such a retarded douche like Mayer? No wonder Brad Pitt left her for Angelina.

  46. nana says:

sorry but i do not want him to recover.

  47. dovesgate says:

Wow. Talk about lack of reading comprehension. Everyone sees the “n” word and goes ballistic without taking a second to really look at what he’s saying.

“Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n* pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass?”

The man has a point. IF he had a “hood pass” he COULD call it a “n” pass because he’d have been accepted as a member of the community… however, as Dave Chappelle was quoted above, only black people get to use the n word.

None of those segments were a complete question and answer set. What part of that interview segment got cut? The part where he says he can’t call it that because hes white? And therefore he doesn’t really have this “hood pass”?

The David Whoever d*ck? Yeah, too far. He could have used better words to say he’s attracted to white women.

The f*cking men in the *ss thing, so? Lots of men have that competitive thing going on. So do lots of women. At least he’s being honest about why he’s considered a good lover.

Spilling the beans about his lovers? So? Have none of you ever had the experience of being around men having a guy talk? I have. This is how they talk to each other. Perhaps most of you would like to believe that your men and the men around you wouldn’t be speaking like that but trust me, they are. The only difference is that Mayer is telling the world. While men who aren’t telling literally the world might spill the beans on unpleasant things (like how much you fart in bed or that you smelled a little funky down below), this dude isn’t saying anything negative.

I think the biggest problem is that this world has become sooo incredibly obsessed with being PC. So what if someone says f*g? So what if someone says the n word? Either EVERYONE should stop saying it or NO ONE should. No one should get a free pass. Not a black person who calls another a n*****, not a gay person who calls another a f*g, not even a woman who calls another a b*tch.

  48. GatsbyGal says:

I used to love his songs when they came on the radio, but now in light of what a disgusting human being he is, all his music just sounds like lies. I’m supposed to believe this guy is actually capable of writing a meaningful love song? He totally wrote them to get into chick’s pants. It’s so obvious now.

  49. Dani says:

I can’t stand the guy, but I honestly don’t think he’s racist. I just think he doesn’t know when to shut up and he doesn’t know when he’s crossing the line from “funny racial comedy bits” to “insulting a race and failing on the funny part.” He honestly thinks he’s hilarious, so he probably sees other comedians doing racial based comedy jokes and figures that he can do that too. He just doesn’t realize what he’s saying isnt funny and just downright stupid. He needs to shut up. He’s a singer, not a comedian. It doesn’t work for him.

I’m not offended by what he says [it takes a lot to offend me] but I find him extremely annoying and wish he would go away.

As for this ending his career or harming it in some way, I doubt it will. There have been other A-list/B-list/C-list etc stars that have said worse, and gotten away with it. Either people eventually forget, or they just get annoyed with hearing about it and stop making a big deal out of it just to make it go away. The only celebrity I can think of that said something racist and didn’t recover was Whatshisface [kramer] from seinfield. Other than that, others have come out just fine, so this idiot probably will too. Ugh, he’s annoying.

  50. Kelli says:

I agree with Dani. He just doesn’t know when to shut the hell up. He’s not racist, he’s just an idiot.

As for the whole “only dating white women” thing, honestly, it’s not like he’s the only one who does that. Everyone has a preference on who they date, or what their “type” is. Some people date others of ALL races, and some people would rather just stick to one race and simply don’t get turned on by the other, for whatever reason.

I’m white and I don’t care what race you are, if you’re a good person that is good enough for me. However, my aunt is also white but she only preferred to date black guys because white guys just didn’t do it for her. She married a black man, and HE only dated white women because black women just didn’t appeal to him. Not saying it’s right, I think it’s close mindedness but not crossing the line into being racist. There are a TON of people out there who just stick to one race, and you would be lying to yourself if you said that wasn’t true. It doesn’t just extend to race, it extends to things like body types. Lots of guys would rather have a skinny woman than someone who is overweight, and I think that is basically the same kind of thing as just dating one race. Some people just have types, no matter how right or wrong it is. He’s just the one who said it outloud and got in trouble for it.

I can’t stand this guy one way or another, though. He can’t sing, his ego is way too big, and he thinks he can get away with saying anything now.

    Just go away already.

  51. mockey says:

    leave this dumbass alone.
he'(s not racist, he’s an idiot

  52. lin234 says:

Kelli- Good post. I thought the same thing too. People all have types they are attracted to and the only thing is that they know better than to announce to the world in the most obnoxious way possible about the type they don’t like. Things like that are usually said in confidence to close family and friends in terms of what your type is because you never know who you will offend.

If Mayer had said he liked the skinny, blond, nice boobs, and preferably famous type of girl, he wouldn’t get as much of a negative outcry. Instead, he had to say the most offensive things for more press. Douchebag.

  53. Jazz says:

I can’t stand this loser, make him go away!

  54. Ben says:

The guys and idiot for saying what he said and his comments were definately racist, sexist, etc however I don’t think he is racitst, etc himself (there is a difference).
He said stupid things but there wasn’t the hate behind it that marks career jepodising moments (ala Michael Richards, Mel Gibson).
I don’t like his pop music but the guy can play the blues f’n well and as long as he can do that he’ll always have a career and be an in demand musician even if he doesn’t make chart topping albums anymore (which he will).

I personally find it amusing when someone finds out an individual is a dickhead it somehow discredits their career. Examples in these comments (to paraphrase) John Mayer is a douchebag and his so-called music career is over.
His so-called music career and talent is apparent if you go onto youtube and type in John Mayer solo.

    I think he’s a dickhead though.

  55. kelly says:

    dueshbag

  56. Angelica says:

Good for him! It’s so much more
    fun dealing with the quicksand
    of fake diplomacy.

He says what he means and means
    what he says.

Like, or dislike both have equal
    opportunity here.

So much better to be obliterated out of
    existence by the canon(s) of sociopathy;
    loose.

  57. Sigh. says:

    @ Ben —
I am with you on that point.
Before his “Playboy Improv,” he never struck me as racist, just vain, but still talented. Same with Michael Jackson, a weirdo, but still talented.

Does anyone remember ISAIAH WASHINGTON saying he didn’t use the “f” word, while using the “f” word? Where is he now? Exactly. If you KNOW the word is offensive, then using it, in any capacity is going to acutally offend some, especially the ones it references. Notice NONE of us are actually USING the actual slurs. Why? Cos we would get shut down, and we know it.

Some one posted earlier that he should not have apologized. If he gets to say whatever he wants in some sort of hilarious pseudo-intellectual pontification on culture, then he should not have backed down. No, this was “The John Mayer Comedy Tour,” that started w/ obnoxious quotes in Rolling Stone and ended when he decided to drag everyone else down in Playboy. He KNOWS people think he’s a douche, he tried to play into it, I guess thinking it would be seen as edgy. Fail. He’s a singer, not Richard Pryor or George Carlin.

As far as the “hood pass” is concerned, not everyone in the black community thinks the “n” word is endearing or entertaining. Some, not all. And that includes in the hood.

And why not say he doesn’t date black women? SIMPLE ECONOMICS/MARKETING. That alienates black women, and anyone else who doesn’t agree who might listen to “pop blues” = potential sales. Our dating lives does not directly impact our jobs because we are not celebrities. Same goes for homosexuals who were insulted, even the 3 or 4 Jessica Simpson fans who may have been flummoxed.

“Say what you need to say,” be aware of it’s impact. That’s what ADULTS do.

  58. Alecto says:

maybe this will get swifty to run

  59. San says:

    33. Sincerity that was awesome.
Mayer is on some serious crack!
I also think this db is crazy and that’s why we don’t understand him because if we did that would mean we were crazy to.

Ok fine Mayer don’t like black women so singling them out just opened the door for black women to get bash. I have read a bunch of post on line saying nobody want to date black women. I have never read SO MANY post like that until this jerk said that.

If he is not a racist he just became a racist’s person tool. If he is not a racist what the hell does that matter if he just help to empower racist people.
People that are not hurt by what he said are shrugging this off.

  60. EB says:

Certainly Mayer has the right to say what he likes – and I and others certainly have the right to respond to it!

No, we are not going back to the good ol’days when the “white man” could say and do as he pleased to any minority group and women. Too bad! We, blacks, gays, women, etc, have to right to respond and be offended, that’s what a truly free society entails. It’s only “politically correct” when it impinges on some bigot/ignoramus’ right to offend. These so called free speech advocates only come out of the woodwork when it’s time to defend insults, why is that?

Mayer has always been an idiot – and he continues to be one. He deserves the repercussions of his comments, since he took the liberty of making them in the first place. Consequences, consequences, and I for one am pleased!

  61. me says:

THANK YOU to the poster cos it seems so EASY the way everyone just looked over the use of the F*word by this huge douche! sure the n*word was no good at all, but why only mentioning that? the fact he hates perez hilton doesnt give him reason to refer to gays as f*….. douche he is and double standards from the press of course as usual

  62. NYC says:

I guess this means we won’t be having anymore Alicia Keyes John Mayer duets. Or maybe 1/2 a duet.

John is just a victim of wanting to be a stand up comic but without the ability to have the level of humor that a Sarah Silverman would have to pull it off.

Funny the only one to come out of this is with flying colors is Jessica Simpson. At least he got people interested in her again.

  63. Cheyenne says:

No, Dani and Kelli, he’s a racist idiot. It’s possible to be both at the same time.

If there was any justice, he’d fall down a black hole and never be seen or heard from again. But as San said upthread, there are enough closet racists crawling out of the woodwork to keep him viable for a while.

@bete: You asked how dumb must Jennifer Aniston be to even converse with such a retarded douche like Mayer? Didn’t you read her comment that she loved that sit and watch him “think thoughts”? One can only imagine the kind of thoughts that were running through his head.

  64. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    @EB: Awesome.

Every freedom comes in tandem with a responsibility. If you breach it, don’t expect the result to be a medal of honour. It reminds me of Prince George, who never misses an opportunity to say the most wrong and backwards garbage that his mind can conjure. And when people say ‘boo’, it was a joke and the peasants don’t understand his dry wit. Spare me– and get a better joke.

  65. whoami says:

    13.1.14.4.18.1.7.15.18.1.1110

  66. jzhz says:

    Thank you, EB!

  67. Kevin says:

I bet if Halle, or Gabriel Union, or Rhianna, or Janet J. or you name it offered to serve it up he’d be on it like a starving man on a bologna sammich! He’s not only an idiot but a liar.

  68. CB Rawks says:

@Juice, I don’t want either to recover, and I’m not sure which one could actually swing it.
I hope they both fail and disappear. They are disgusting hateful egomaniacs.

    He’s racist AND an idiot.
I mean, every racist is an idiot, and in Mayer’s case he’s an idiot who also happens to be racist.

  69. scandoll says:

I never understood the appeal, I always thought he was ugly…his skin is weird looking. Now we see he is as ugly on the inside as on the outside

  70. Blitz says:

The sad thing about Mayer is that unlike other celebs that go off, he is known more for mouthing off and saying outrageous things than his music, at least to most of the world. His fan base expects him to be immature and obnoxious. He’s not even hiding it. It’s certainly not the first time he’s dissed Aniston. I don’t understand his appeal but I don’t understand Howard Stern either. And I disagree about Richards, I think he’s toast.

  71. What an idiot. John Mayer’s is an idiot who also happens to be racist. How can you do this? He should be a role model, as many people and fans follow him.

  72. GOMO says:

Please go away John Mayer…seems like he is getting more notority for his romps with the women (and maybe men too) than for his music. He is not that talented and wouldn’t be missed.
    GO AWAY…

  73. JaneSaysIdiot says:

He is such an idiot. I’m glad I’ve never bought one of his albums and now I never will. He’s become apart of the rule of 3. Which means he’s now one of the 3 artists I change the channel on without an explantion. So long loser.

  74. Moore says:

juiceinla, I vote kanye. Didn’t he actually go away when he said he was going to?

I used to like mayer back when he only played and didn’t talk (there was a time, wasn’t there?). Now he’s just like any childish, insecure person cracking offensive jokes trying to be in the in crowd. Pathetic. Racist and pathetic. Poor thing.

  75. You Go Girl says:

    john’s a genius, he’s a bit of a nerd, he’s eccentric, he’s on another level altogether.
    but….why crusify him for that?
do we all need to have to have the same humor, opinion etc?
    how boring would that be.
had a comedian said any of that, nobody would have said a word.
let it go, let people be individual. i for one am not a fan of a communist mentality where we all need to be the same. that’s becoming as common as catshit!
ps; saw taylor swift with my 9 year old daughter friday night in adelaide, she was awesome. what a talented, beautiful gal!

  76. d says:

this reminds me of a long long ago radio interview I heard with Chrissie Hynde, who said it was funny to see all the girls going for these male rock stars because basically they (the rock stars) were insecure and/or jerks and/or socially awkward dweebs, etc. (not that there’s anything wrong with shy guys…) She wasn’t saying it meanly, just that the reality of who these guys were was quite at odds with what most people, including girl fans, thought. With the technology available to everyone now, it’s much easier to see the reality of who these celebrities/rock stars/etc., really are. E.g., not too bright. Or shy. Or awkward. Or whatever. Maybe talented in one area of life, but kind of a dolt in other or all areas. As for Mayer, he just isn’t as bright or intellectual or hip as he thinks he is. He’s just a jerk who can play guitar. IMO, a guy who talks about his exes as Mayer does is beyond inacceptable, it’s just so ill-mannered, discourteous, self-serving, disrespectful, etc. That he just doesn’t get this is telling.
He TOTALLY reminds of the ex who insisted he was a nice simple guy when in reality he was an EPIC EPIC douchebag. As in, beside the dictionary definition for douchebag, you will see my ex’s face.

  77. Kelaa Khaa says:

Perhaps John Mayer should announce to the world that he will stop tweeting and instead spend his twittering time reading a book or two – Roots and Queen by Alex Haley would be a good start, also Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, by Dee Brown, Towelhead by Alicia Erian… Perhaps the commenters can make a reading list for him?

  78. archiepelago says:

I read somewhere else that Mayer reads every gossip site for stuff about himself and sometimes posts. I guess narcissism and Mea Culpa are part of the same publicity machine.

  79. d says:

    He could start with this:

    http://www.literary-liaisons.com/article027.html

    and yes, I know it’s old-fashioned…got to start somewhere…

he could then move on to this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Manners-Men-What-When/dp/0060539801

  80. Sapna7 says:

These are his opinions and views. Everyone has them; like it or not.

  81. d says:

I know he’s entitled to his opinions, but arrrgh! I just want to play Lily Allen’s “F*** You” song really loudly in his face.

  82. ogechi says:

As far as i am concerned, he is a none entity and a complete imbecile who is so insecure. I am a complete black woman and i am not sure any sensible black lady can date an imp like him.

  83. corine says:

@ Cheyenne. Did she really say that? I remember she said she “adored” Mayer. I bet the only reason she loves to hear him “think thoughts” is because she can’t think of anything original to say herself. Ever read one of her interviews? She sounds like a teenager stringing together a bunch of cliches.
I can’t believe anyone would date this guy. He’s so gross.

  84. illusions says:

Im a black woman who doesnt really have a problem with what he said, he was just being a smartarse and it completely backfired on him. Aligning his penis with a truly ugly human being was really dumb. But you know what, I see Mayer as a boy, fat, yeah remember when he was chunky…..yeah a fat little nerd alone in his room, masturbating to a picture of the homecomming queen. Well that fat kid got famous and his fantasy has come to life, Simpson, Anniston, Love Hewitt the unattainable high school popularity goddesses. At his age he has had a ‘big look in the mirror and grow up’ moment and he will be better for it cause he is a smart guy, and a sensitive one. It sometimes take a while to grow up and we’ve all had complete cringe worthy moments that we wish we could take back!!!

  85. Ellen says:

oh, boy. he really wants us to dislike him, doesn’t he?

  86. Aussie Mama says:

    Illusions.
    Well said girl.
Unlike us, these guys do their growing up in print and pictures.
That would suck, no second chance, very sad indeed.
Let it go people, let it go.
Hell you let Bush and his crim’s go and look at what they did, Iraque, Afganistan, 911.

  87. crazydaisy says:

i always thought this dude was gross. his music is ok as long as it’s on a record. as a person, he seems totally shallow and conceited, not to mention greasy-slick. and now, an idiot. ew.

  88. lee love says:

i still think john mayer is a great writer and performer… dont care what he said… he is talented period.
