Donald Trump on his recession: ‘Maybe the children will have 2 dolls instead of 30’

America had a good run as the land of plenty, the country with cheap goods and a solid economy. Say goodbye to the land of plenty, say goodbye to the American Century. Several economic forecasts came out this week and all of them have sent the Trump administration into a panic. Trump has overseen two solid months of declining manufacturing, job losses, high prices and stock market catastrophes. The American economy is going to look very, very different in six months. Well, Donald Trump has heard the American people’s concerns and he thinks they’re all whiners. Why should American kids have lots of dolls? Two dolls is fine.

President Donald Trump has admitted how his foreign tariffs may impact American consumers following a new report about the U.S. economy.

During a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, April 30, Trump was asked about his tariffs on goods from China and how they might continue to affect the U.S. marketplace. In early April, the president upped the tariffs to 145% and Bloomberg reported this week that cargo shipments from China have since fallen by an estimated 60%.

“Somebody said the shelves will be open. Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30. Maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally,” Trump said of the tariffs’ effect on U.S. goods.

“But we’re not talking about something where we’ll have to go out of our way,” he continued. “They have ships that are loaded up with stuff, much of which we don’t need. And we have to make a fair deal. We’ve been ripped off by every country in the world, but China, I would say, is the leading one.”

On Thursday, May 1, the U.S. Commerce Department released a new report indicating that the American economy shrank by 0.3% during the first quarter of 2025. However, on his Truth Social page, Trump was quick to place the blame on his predecessor, President Joe Biden.

“This is Biden’s Stock Market, not Trump’s. I didn’t take over until January 20th,” he wrote. “Tariffs will soon start kicking in, and companies are starting to move into the USA in record numbers. Our Country will boom, but we have to get rid of the Biden ‘Overhang.’ This will take a while, has NOTHING TO DO WITH TARIFFS, only that he left us with bad numbers, but when the boom begins, it will be like no other. BE PATIENT!!!”

Again, the post-pandemic Biden economy was the envy of the world. No other country shimmied their way out of the global post-pandemic slump like Biden’s America. There was some inflation, but otherwise, the stock market was up, millions of jobs were being created, people were saving and spending money, retirement accounts looked healthy, we didn’t have a brain-wormed lunatic in charge of HHS, and a glue-sniffing psychopath wasn’t dismantling the government from within. And most importantly, goods were inexpensive. Parents could afford toys for their kids. You could buy toilet paper without taking out a mortgage. Affordable electronics were readily available. There were no empty shelves anywhere. That’s all about to change.

  1. Tn Democrat says:

He is an absolute nutjob and lunatic. Boycott any and all companies and people that have supported this psycho and his racist sycophants.

  2. Tuesday says:

Or they’ll have zero dolls and still not enough food to eat.

  3. Sue says:

You’re a mean one…Mr. Grinch. You really are a heel.

  4. Amy Bee says:

    Trump’s really not all there.

    • Lili says:

Yeah i think you are right, i saw the bit of the ABC interview where he was trying to convince the interviewer about the Tatoo, i kept thinking this is Elder abuse he should be on the porch somewhere playing with his grand kids

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

He has dementia and/or brain damage from stroke(s). He even got the neighborhood of Harlem mixed up with Harvard University. His “policies” flip-flop depending on who has control of him that day. He’s in much worse condition than Biden was.

    • Smart&Messy says:

Right?? I’m a freelancer in Europe and usually get paid in USD. It lost so much value, I can’t exchange it to anything without losing out. I have to keep the dollars until he blurts out something that makes the value go up a bit for a day or two. And I’ll have to be quick because he can’t keep it together for more than a few hours.

  5. Foxy Brown says:

I work in downtown Seattle and the port is empty of shipping containers where its normally full. Things are about to get bleak.

    • LisaN says:

Ports are empty. that means the workers at the docks arent working, soon there will be layoffs.
That means truckers wont be working, and there will be layoffs.
The big box stores wont have products, and there will be layoffs.

      it just keeps going

Our stores are going to look a lot like Russia by Christmas

    • BeanieBean says:

Goodness. That is so hard to imagine. Just think of all the job losses that represents–the dock workers, the truckers, etc.

      • Blithe says:

And all of the jobs that support THOSE jobs — the places where they eat, drink, shop…. And all of this is deliberate. The wealthy will get their tax breaks — which they can use to buy up all the properties and products that the rest of us will no longer be able to afford.

    • Veronica S. says:

I’m in Washington, too, and not really looking forward to seeing how this effects us. We are mostly an IT based economy now, but the port is really what grew Seattle. Lot of blue collar workers about to be hit hard here, I think.

  6. Lizzie says:

Stocks had a bounce today, thanks Biden.

  7. Kitten says:

Very “Let Them Eat Cake”, sir.

Cut it and put this shit in all the ads come mid-terms because the optics of man who is enriching himself through his meme coin; selling access to the Oval to line his own his pockets while telling working class families that they should just be happy with less is not gonna play well, trust.

I don’t think the GOP has fully reckoned with how much Americans love their cheap Chinese goods. And yes, I do think we could do without the rampant consumerism (I’m including myself here) but that should be a CHOICE, not something imposed upon us by a man who’s worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

  8. Bumblebee says:

2 dolls instead of 30. Because it’s little girls who are the problem. Not big boys. Says the big boy who wants a 6600 Army soldier parade on his birthday.

    • BeanieBean says:

      👏

    • paintybox says:

That got me too – dolls??? Freudian slip.

      • MichaelaCat says:

        No, it’s calculated.

A big percentage of men hate and resent women. Many men also can’t emphatize with women at all.

If he said “2 toy cars instead of…”, they would fnd it annoying and question his elitism. Now, it makes them think of “spoiled little brats” and they will gloat at the idea.

  9. ML says:

Ugh, this brilliant tangerine not only is giving the gift of a national recession, he’s also gifting the world with one. Economies are interconnected.

    • Smart&Messy says:

I posted my personal example of this before I read your comment. The ripple effect is reaching everyone already. Oh and Chinese manufacturers are like, ok make your own shit Americans, we have other markets to cater to.

  10. Lj says:

    The Orange Man speaks again!
“Well maybe the children will have two dolls instead of thirty.”
Or maybe they’ll have nothing at all!

  11. Mslove says:

The Heritage Foundation is telling that pile of orange shit what to say and do. Trump’s mind is gone and things are going to get much worse.

  12. olliesmom says:

So much for the “war on Christmas”.

Donnie Two Dolls (not mine) has no clue how real Americans live. And he doesn’t care.

  13. Brassy Rebel says:

I don’t think we have ever had a president so determined to solve non-existentent problems. But we had few problems after Biden-Harris cleaned up his last mess, so he just invented some and media went along. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • salmonpuff says:

It really drives me crazy that the media doesn’t ever push back on his lies/delusions. How, specifically, was China “cheating” us? They weren’t. We had a mutually beneficial trade arrangement that might have needed tweaking (I dunno…I’m not an economist!). He just started shouting “They’re cheating us!” and the media never really pushes back on that. It’s insane.

    • Veronica S. says:

Honestly, you could make the argument the biggest mistake the Democrats have made over the past twenty years, outside of a few miscalculations, is bothering to clean up the mess Republicans made over and over again, so they could come in and sweep up the credit for the work. Frankly, I think a lot of people are kidding themselves if they think Dems are going out of their way to fix any of this. Even from a coldly pragmatic political perspective, they’d be wise to simply let America have what it voted for. Why put themselves in the firing line of a fascist regime for a country that handed itself over to a failure of a president on a silver platter.

  14. Nicki says:

My mom believes Trump is a Russian mole who won in a rigged election to bring the US to its knees. I’m not laughing as much at that these days.

  15. BeanieBean says:

We were talking at work yesterday about why is this administration so hateful to us federal employees and one co-worker said something along the lines of ‘the tariffs I understand, something had to be done, but why are WE being penalized’. Something like that. I just…I wasn’t getting in to it. Not at work. But now I know how she voted. 🙄

  16. Anne Maria says:

Extraordinary that anyone who voted for him could hear the ‘couple of bucks more’ comment and not realise this guy has nothing but contempt for them.

  17. wolfmamma says:

He deserves all of the karma that is ripening

  18. Lau says:

In two years he’ll still be saying that this is “Biden’s stock market” that’s for sure.

  19. Tarte Au Citron says:

I don’t believe he ever told Ivanka she could only have 2 dolls 😄

    • Arpeggi says:

I don’t believe he was much around or paying attention when Ivanka was young enough to play with dolls. I’m also pretty sure his parents saw toys as futile and he never got any despite how wealthy they were.

  20. somebody says:

There are always hand-me-downs and thrift stores for dolls. I think more people are worried about what their children will eat when he destroys everything.

  21. AC says:

It will be different next qtr once the tariffs hit. I don’t think Americans realize how spoiled they are with certain things and they don’t know the meaning of what other countries talk about when they say “hardship” – well the U.S. is about to experience and learn.
When we were in Spain last year for 6 mths (also at the time of Biden’s term) – the U.S.economically was so strong that even media around the world were wondering how others can catch up.
