Brooklyn dad wins Pedro Pascal lookalike contest on Father’s Day

It’s been a minute since we’ve had a celebrity lookalike contest, but a NYC Mexican restaurant just served us one that was well worth the wait. It all started when the owners of Son Del North heard Pedro Pascal say in an interview that there were “no good Mexican restaurants in New York.” Those fighting words prompted the restaurant to host a Pedro Pascal lookalike contest that would both celebrate the star, and call his bluff on his incendiary culinary remarks. Cut to Sunday, Father’s Day, when about 30 aspiring Pedros descended on Son Del North to see who would be voted as chief doppelganger of everyone’s favorite zaddy. (The memo section of the oversized $50 prize check literally said, “Being A Zaddy.”) And the winner is… Pedro #5! AKA George Gountas, Brooklyn dad and lighting designer for The Daily Show. But on Sunday, the spotlight was on him!

This Father’s Day, one of film and television’s most beloved daddies was celebrated in New York City.

A Pedro Pascal look-alike contest was held in the streets of NYC’s Lower East Side, where fans crowned Pedro #5, Brooklyn dad George Gountas, for having the closest resemblance to the Golden Globe-nominated The Last of Us star.

Gountas actually works in the television business — he is the lighting designer for The Daily Show.

Gountas, who was dragged to the contest by his wife Jenny Gania, won $50 and a year’s supply of burritos courtesy of host Son Del North Mexican restaurant, according to the New York Post.

“It started when the Games of Thrones came out the first time — that’s when we first heard it,” Gania told the post. “Then some kids started noting it, too, so I was like, when we saw this [contest], I was like, ‘It’s Father’s Day. You have to go. It’s going to be your Father’s Day treat.’ It’s funny, because he’s not on social media at all. But now he’s going to be everywhere.”

After Gountas beat out nearly 30 other Pedros who gathered outside the eatery in the rain for the contest, Son Del North chef and co-owner Annisha Garcia said the inspiration came after Pascal claimed in 2023 that there is no good Mexican food in the city.

“I’m, ‘So sorry, but there’s no Mexican, good Mexican food in New York?’” said Garcia. “And we were like, ‘There is, and we are here.’”

[From Deadline]

It’s hilarious that Pedro #5’s wife had to drag him to the contest, on Father’s Day no less, but I’m completely on her side for insisting it be done! No disrespect to all the other Pedros — and special shout outs to Pedro #18 for wearing the “ADULT CONTENT” t-shirt, and Pedro #2 for incorporating the 2024-era arm sling into his look — but really, there was no competition with Pedro #5 in the mix. Everyone else screamed, “I’m entering a Pedro Pascal lookalike contest,” whereas Pedro #5 simply, effortlessly WAS Pedro Pascal. (It also didn’t hurt that he chose an arm-bearing shirt similar to what OG Pedro wore in Cannes recently, iykyk.) Anyway, Mazel Tov to Pedro #5; your wife was right. And now he gets free burritos for a year!! Sure, it’s capped at one burrito a week, as clearly noted in the original event poster. But still! Dios mío, what I wouldn’t do for Mexican food, any day of the week.

I met Sidney Sweeney’s doppelganger working at a coffee shop near my house. Even the voice was the same. I only saw her there the one time. I’m still not convinced that is wasn’t her.
