Those of us who have been following the saga of Kate Middleton from the beginning are very familiar with all of the pre-marriage lore. The British media has done a pretty good job cleaning up Kate’s image after she married Prince William in 2011, but a lot of us remember all of the good gossip from back in the day. The “Waity” gossip, the gossip about Kate running to Carole constantly so that Carole could stage-manage the courtship, the gossip about all of the times William dumped Kate to pursue other women. One of my favorite pieces of Vintage Kate gossip was the story about Queen Elizabeth telling Kate to get a job. Every so often, that story gets brought up, and interestingly enough, the Mail decided to do a #whoremembers piece this weekend. LOL.
As a fresh-faced member of the Royal Family, the Princess of Wales turned to Prince William’s grandmother for guidance on navigating the Firm. The Daily Mail’s Richard Kay described the two as sharing a ‘grandmotherly’ bond – with Kate describing the Queen as ‘a gentle guide’. And like any grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II was not afraid to point out areas in her granddaughter-in-law’s life that needed attention – even before Kate and William were engaged.
Royal correspondent Katie Nicholl wrote that the Queen was concerned about Kate’s lack of a stable job and the number of holidays she was taking in her book, William and Harry. She wrote: ‘If Kate was not with William at Balmoral then the couple were skiing or holidaying on Mustique. Kate was there so often the press dubbed her Queen of Mustique, a title that had previously belonged to Princess Margaret.’
The royal author noted that while Kate and William were enjoying island life, people back home were struggling through the recession. Nicholl wrote: ‘Such frivolous displays of wealth were unpalatable to the Queen. While the rest of the world speculated that an engagement was on the horizon for William and Kate, the Queen believed an announcement should be postponed until Kate was settled in a career.’
One insider told Nicholl at the time that ‘it is Her Majesty’s opinion that if Kate is one day going to be William’s consort, then she needs a proper job.’ MailOnline reported at the time that sources close to the Queen said she was acutely aware that William’s public image could suffer if his girlfriend were not recognised as a working professional in her own right.
‘The Queen has had conversations with a few trusted friends about how to tackle what is being called the Kate problem,’ a senior aide told The Mail on Sunday. ‘On the few occasions the Queen has met Kate, she has thought she is a nice enough girl. But the Queen has admitted she has no idea what Kate actually does. Privately she is very concerned about what the repercussions could be if Kate is not in a stable job as and when William is ready to propose. Although they are not yet engaged, it seems more likely than not that Kate will be a Royal bride one day, and the Queen is of the opinion that Kate should be working. She believes in a modern Monarchy and feels very strongly that the Royals should be leading by example.
[Kate eventually] started working at Jigsaw, which is owned by her parents’ close friends John and Belle Robinson, who let William and Kate take a holiday in Mustique. But Kate quit the job after less than a year. According to Nicholl, the Queen’s words ‘stung’ Kate.
In my opinion, there’s a reason why the Mail is bringing this up again and talking about how Kate has truly never held a real job. Even the Jigsaw job was basically part-time, because Kate had to be available to go on vacations with William at the drop of a hat. This is all just reinforcing a certain Kate narrative, one which has always lingered despite the palace’s half-assed clean-up job. That narrative: Kate doesn’t know HOW to work, Kate loves to take vacations, Kate is a delicate flower who cannot be expected to do much of anything, Kate was not built for any kind of work, and even QEII saw that it would be a big problem for the Firm longterm. Well, here we are.

This is the first thing I noticed. She looks very athletic and healthy. I’m not trying to concern troll but she is very thin in present day.
Is the photo where she wears black and has the keys in her hand in front of a brick wall really Kate? She looks so different. Did Kate has some work done to her face after this photo was taken?
Her face definitely is different and it’s not just weight loss and Botox. The nose and jaw definitely different.
Kate’s jaws were already starting to sag and she was in her twenties!!

According to various pieces of information that disappeared from the media and the internet after the wedding, face work was also done before this photo. There was some kind of Miss competition at school and Kate took one of the last places. It is not known whether it was because of her beauty or she was simply not liked, but the Middleton ladies got to work and after the holidays Kate came back so changed that people did not recognize her. Supposedly she looked much better.
Now her face has clearly changed, especially the modeled cheeks and jawline, nose. The beginnings of “hamsters” are already visible in this photo. She was fatter, but she still had fuller cheeks, which were reduced, she also has improved jaw symmetry and an enlarged, more protruding chin, slightly enlarged lips, removed fat tissue from the eyelids and teeth changed several times. If you add wigs, botox, fillers and Photoshop, you get the effect of current photos. Unfortunately, all you have to do is remove this solid retouching, and you have a face that is older than her mother’s. Being morbidly thin doesn’t help either.

Yes, that’s her. She younger–which gives her a fuller face; she’s a little heavier, which gives her a fuller face; she drank a lot then, which gives her a fuller face; all women can be subject to bloat at some point during the month, which gives her a fuller face.
She wasn’t botoxing yet, but somewhere in this time period she had her teeth changed (caps, I believe). She wasn’t yet getting filler for her upper lip. The left side of her face has always been very different from her right–she takes after her father in face shape & eyes. Notice the left side of her mouth dragging down. I know last year some were speculating she’d had a stroke, but her mouth has always been that way. Again, she has her father’s facial features.
The moment she got engaged she embarked in a drop the weight campaign that has only stopped when pregnant.
There is a stark difference Before and After the engagement.
Try telling that to her deluded fan base who insist that she has always been naturally thin, as in, her weight since the 2007 reconciliation, at which time William allegedly promised to marry her.
But it’s easy to point the finger at Kate’s laziness, since William was forced to do military training and whatever ruse their heir engages to pretend that he actually works.
But he’s never really worked, either. It’s all smoke and mirrors. He chose Kate because he knew that she would never challenge him to be the best version of himself. He knew that the Middletons would feed his ego and never challenge him regarding his treatment of their daughter. The Middletons coddled, fawned over and stroked his ego, paying for posh vacations to reel him in. The relationship ended in marriage because of mutual convenience – and a love of the good life with minimal work – on both sides of the equation.
The late Queen was likely more concerned because she knew her grandson and heir was equally lazy. She would have liked William to marry a woman with a work ethic, to bring out the best in him, I’m sure.

Middleton never had any money, and their company was more like their uncle’s laundry. I remember old articles that the tax office was interested in them because the reported income was impossible to obtain from what they were doing. But they used Kate’s relationship with William and the matter went quiet and then disappeared from the media.
The funny thing is that the vacation that Middleton took him to was a luxury brothel that his uncle ran in the tropics🤣
And William did this military training just like everything he does. Not only was it short and “at home”, but after a few weeks he ran away home. During that time he managed to lose his rifle, steal a helicopter with his buddies and fly for a beer, then land in the garden and have trouble getting back. I don’t know who was the pilot, he wasn’t a pilot, he never finished the course, he didn’t fly any hours, he was an amateur. If it was any other soldier, he would have been demoted, thrown out and put on trial. But it was William, so he finished the course even though he wasn’t there and now we read about his dedicated service 🤮 They’re both frauds.

The Queen would not see Kate as a “granddaughter” until she actually married in. The Queen and Kate only met at Peter Philip’s wedding and William was not with her because he went to Jecca Craig’s brother’s wedding.
I was just about to post that. I remember reading that the Queen pointed out that Kate had been out of college for a year and still had no job. “What does she do?” was the question to her courtiers. She certainly wasn’t having Kate over for tea to discuss career options. Kate only took the job at Jigsaw to please the Queen and also repair her reputation as someone who just sat around waiting for Willie to call.
I recall that the late Queen told William that there would be no engagement until Kate got a job – and kept it. That’s when she got the pretend one with her parents.

How about when the actual photographer they employed came out and was like “um, no… She didn’t take any of the catalog photos”.
IIRC It was around that time the narrative changed and the Middletons portrayed it as a natural extension of her Art History degree. That eventually snowballed into turning her passion for photography into a career. Later, they used this again when Kate was supposedly being mentored by Mario Testino and he came out with “it’s the first I’m hearing of this”.
Those nightclub pictures where she and WIlliam look worse for wear are still on the Internet.

What’s interesting though is the timing of this article. “look, the late queen was worried about kate’s lack of work ethic and turns out she was right to be worried!!!!” Someone is really really ticked that Kate pulled out of Ascot.
The other side to this though obviously is how lazy William is. Kate had to have a flexible job so she could be available for William – why? Why wasn’t he working regularly, either for the RAF or as a royal – with the typical scheduled vacations that most of the royals take (Balmoral, skiing and maybe one tropical vacation as well.) Kate couldn’t work bc she was vacationing all the time but a lot of her vacations (most of them) were with William.
Well exactly. She was vacationing with the heir. But in this case, William showed up to Royal Ascot. And as do-nothing as he may be, he still does more than her. Not a lot. But more. Although he’s the heir so he should be doing substantially more.
William was never going to marry a legitimately hard working and driven woman, he may have thought he wanted that only to find none of them would put up with him but long-term these two are well suited when it comes to doing the least possible

What is going on behind the scenes in that family? These types of stories aren’t being put back in front of people for no reason. I remember their party days because we are of a similar age. And while I wasn’t an intricate Royal watcher back then I was definitely a young celeb watcher, and that’s what they were. So I remember them being plastered coming out of bars and clubs in Mayfair and all of the other behavior which is sort of typical mid-20s but they tried to bury to make them seem like this century’s Ozzie and Harriet.
There’s a lot of new Royal watchers though, that only started paying attention for good or ill after 2016. And even more that only started paying attention after 2020. Refreshing their memories on all of this and leading them down rabbit holes, when she is being criticized for her laziness, and lack of a work schedule is not to do her any favors.
It’ll be interesting to see how far down this whoremembers path they’re going to go. Just how much of a fumble was it for her to bail on royal ascot at the last minute. Are they really gonna remind they’re readers of all of this ad nauseum or just a few articles here or there?

The number one duty of Kate is to provide content for the tabloids. The palace produced instagram reels don’t count. The tabloids will make her pay.
No disrespect to the late Queen, but what would she actually know about “job” in the normal sense. I think she must have noticed that Kate seemed lacking in interests, direction, and purpose in real life. What does she actually do? How does she fill her time? Why is she always on holiday, etc. Would it be reasonable to assume that there would be a background check on anyone the heir is interested in especially if she were not known within the aristocratic circle?
I think Elizabeth knew about the general life skills that go into having a job – showing up, being on time, keeping a consistent schedule, keeping focus, committing to a task and finishing it.
As for the background check, I’d think it would be – is she fertile? any scandals?
I agree @tamsin, especially considering how Charles was pushed by the family into marrying Diana specifically because she was young and unmolded by a career so that she could be molded by the institution instead. The irony is that Diana ultimately did develop her own strong interests and worked for her charities enthusiastically … and then the royal family couldn’t stand that either. I am not a fan of Kate, but this sounds more like an RF problem. Anyone who marries in is always found wanting, it seems.
Yeah I came to post about the same thing–they made fun of Diana for working (cleaning and working in the kindergarten) possibly b/c it was below her station as an Earl’s daughter. If Kate had been a Lady in 2002 would they have felt the same way?
Well the late Queen knew a lazy young woman whose only interest was marrying her grandson and heir. The Queen also had the Middletons’ number from Day 1. Apart from the obligatory appearances upon marriage, the Queen never invited the Middletons for Xmas. I think this caused some tension in the early days.
Princess Anne was the one who remarked, “nice work if you can get it” regarding Kate being at William’s beck and call. She no doubt informed her mother.
That’s a good question, and I think it’s worth noting that the question QEII supposedly asked her courtiers was “But what does she DO?” not whether Kate had a job or not. Certainly the Queen didn’t have a job in the traditional sense before ascending to the throne, but she had several interests that she was passionate about and goals she was interested in pursuing (mostly horse training and racing, lol).
Even if we look at the other eligible aristo women of William’s age, most of them had something that fulfilled them and gave them purpose, whether it was patronizing the arts, travel, charity work, gardening, modelling, or design. Kate had…William. It was a huge red flag. It indicated that Kate had no discernible interests or identity apart from “being William’s girlfriend” and eventually “becoming William’s wife”. In other words, dull. No curiosity, no interests, no goals, no purpose – so, exactly the wrong person for a public role in the royal family. Diana had interests (dance, for one) and worked in a primary school. By all accounts, although she was shy, she was interesting and interested in others. Kind of important if you accept a public facing role!
I believe the Queen had a sort of job during the war. Certainly more than Kate had as a young woman.
QEII worked as a mechanic. Reportedly, once she turned 18 she argued with her father to be permitted to have a role in the war effort. She was officially a uniformed member of the armed services. However, because she was born in 1926, by the time she really got going with that job the war was almost over.
Yeah I think the idea of QEII expecting Kate to have a 9-5 job is taking the comment a little too literally. If Kate had been involved in serious charity work, or came from a family with a large estate that she helped to run, or planned local events in Berkshire, or something like that, QEII would have understood that. She would have been familiar with the idea of a rich girl not having a paying job but still being busy.
Kate’s only job has been waiting around for william, and QEII knew it and that’s why she asked that question (well supposedly asked that question.)
I think this puts it very well. If a person doesn’t need to work, a person doesn’t have to work, but they darn well ought to be able to be functional (barring actual issues and handicaps that make that impossible) and multi-faceted and interesting. Interests, charities, social gatherings, whatever..
I don’t really consider royal work to be particularly onerous, though to do it well is a skill that not all of them possess, and to do it for years is something else.
Kate and William do next to nothing and they do it poorly.
Many of the aristo ladies had some kind of job or they did a lot of charity work. Kate did neither but basically waited for William’s phone call.

I remember Kate saying she didn’t have a job because the royal family wouldn’t allow it. The palace said nope and shortly after she started at jigsaw lol.
She’s had 4 lots of plastic surgery that I know of.. She’s had her face sculpted.. 2 nose jobs.. 2 or 3 lots of teeth. Then more recent lifts. She’s had her eyes done at least once if not twice. I also think she had a lower lift to deal with the jowls
I was one of the few thinking, loudly, that her illness was a cover for extensive cosmetic surgery. She has never looked like a person with cancer or undergoing chemo/radiation, or even steroids.
And yes, I know this is me being a bitch but I 100% believe her capable of lying in order to cover her ass of lies.

That tracks, it’s shocking to see how she went form a healthy and fit young woman to the gauntness of today but the first thing I noticed in the top pic is that her nose is clearly different (and I’m the worst at spotting actual surgical changes).

Yes Carole was gunning HARD in the press to marry Pippa off to George Percy, but that never worked out.
I doubt that if they didn’t hang around the Windsors, any rich man would be interested in average, not very bright guys and daughters of financial swindlers. Pipa didn’t meet her husband until after Kate’s wedding. He’s not handsome, but apparently at least he’s rich, and Pipa seems to have a few more brain cells than her sister. If William hadn’t been so stupid and married her, she would either have married some old geezer or continued living with her mother, in fact, he mostly lives with her now :)))
So nothing has really changed. Willi and Kate still vacationing, swapping from ski holidays to Mustique. Kate still not working.

It was very flexible too. The owners were friends of the Middletons.
There is an article out there interviewing the jigsaw owner and she basically confirmed that kate needed to work a flexible schedule because she had to be available when her famous boyfriend called her.
Kate was at jigsaw for a few months. That’s it.
She was, but only on paper. Some newspaper got hold of a contract that said she could leave at any time leave lwork
without giving a reason.. It wasn’t even waiting for a call, it was just following William. From what I remember, this “job” appeared after William broke up with her and was located near his rented apartment. So when she saw him through the window, she left.
Didn’t she get a compassionate leave after the break up ? She never went back to jigsaw.
The only work she’s ever done has gone straight to her face.

One thing that endeared Diana is she did have a job before she married. Not a career, babysitting, house cleaning and working at a day care. She came from an old family with lots of money, but she never came across as ‘too good to work’.

QEII would have said that the job was more than smiling and waving at crowds and reproducing – there’s a reason why the court circular makes a big deal about the number of events each royal does. There’s a certain kind of Noblesse Oblige with the royals where they are expected to lend their name to charities, be part of preserving traditions or historical buildings, employ lots of specialized craftspeople, direct funding to worthy organizations etc. That’s sort of the social contract they have with the British taxpayer. The queen will also have to make speeches, socialize with all sorts, and be able to interact with the public, especially these days.
Because it shows a lack of character that is required of a successful consort. It also reflects badly on William and his degraded standards to be with such a lazy woman of such low morality & self worth. It has 100% tainted his image & where as Willy seems naturally lazy to begin with, she has done nothing but encourage his laziness & propped up his toxic ego.
Because she was to let the public know that the royal family had learned their lesson from all that happened with Diana, yet that all changed very quickly when they couldn’t get her to at least be modern enough to work and be diligent to the royal family and media. That’s why they were okay with the commoner label. It at least seemed as if the royal family were open. That’s why they were pushing this fairytale narrative about Kate and William when it was everything but a fairytale. No woman with substance and pride in herself would wait ten years for a man who had commitment, fidelity and anger issues.

I had never realized how much plastic surgery Keener has had done to her face. Yikes. She looked so much better before landing Diana’s cursed ring. The media that has spent the better part of a decade harping on the Sussexes need to direct more of their ire towards the left behinds. Not addressing Keener’s issues is just as bad as ignoring Meghan’s si. Something has went horribly wrong mentally for Keener and if her mental health issues and probable sa are not addressed, Willy wil be a single dad one way or another, same as his own father. The Windsors knew not giving Diana appropriate security would eventually cause diaster. Not getting Keener appropriate treatement and pulling her out of the public eye without addressing the media expectation that she is supposed to be rail thin is nearly as calculated.

She really was a very pretty girl. I liked her and I never cared that she didn’t work. I still don’t know where she could have reasonably worked and not had the place beset by paparazzi.
Her refusal to do ten hours of “work” a week for the rest of her life, however, is a huge problem. At this point, she and he would be so much better served by “working” than the countless stories about why they aren’t.
Caroline Kennedy managed & she had a similar level of paparazzi interest. I believe she even had an art history degree like Kate, then went to work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art after graduation. Kate–as the royal GF–could have had her pick of any of the wonderful museums in the UK had she halfway tried, but no, she’d rather trail around after William.
I agree with you about not working. Lazy people can be fun sometimes. And she couldn’t come up with a job that was easy!

I think it’s not so much the patience of the press, but of William, who is slowly getting rid of her, starting by throwing her under the bus.
