I’m taking credit for this! I kept pointing out how utterly bizarre it was that Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom refused to issue a joint statement confirming their split, and now they have done just that. It’s not that I think celebrities are required to announce their breakups or divorces (I do not think it’s required, to be clear), I just thought it was extremely weird in this particular situation because Katy and Orly’s publicists kept “soft-launching” their split and confirming the split off the record, and for what? Why did it take this long to just say “by the way, we’ve been over for a bit, it sucks but we still love our daughter?”
Though Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are no longer engaged, they have shifted to a coparenting relationship that focuses on their little girl. In a statement obtained by PEOPLE on Thursday, July 3, reps for the pop star, 40, and the actor, 48, officially confirmed the couple’s split and illustrated how they plan to move forward as a family.
“Due to the abundance of recent interest and conversation surrounding Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry’s relationship, representatives have confirmed that Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting,” the statement read. “They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter [Daisy Dove, 4½] with love, stability, and mutual respect.”
PEOPLE confirmed late last month that the pair had ended their engagement, splitting after nine years of on and off romance and six years after Bloom’s proposal.
Yeah, again – most estranged couples would have put out a statement in both of their names. This comes across as terse! It comes across as “Katy and Orlando refused to speak to each other long enough to work out a statement they could both agree to, so they made their publicists do it.” Which speaks to something else entirely – not a gentle split, not a gradual falling apart, but something a hell of a lot messier.

I read that title as, “They’re shitting their relationship.”
Six of one, a half dozen of the other.
Start off with, “Due to their ill-advised proximity to Jeff Bezos and his crew, resulting in public ridicule…” and it would make more sense.
I think Katy’s exhausting to be around and I imagine her stans are like that too. In my head, they’re all those people from friend circles that are exhausting to be around and you take in small doses, if at all. Not that I have a ton of love for Orlando either but he’s had that aura of being exhausted by Katy in all their red carpet walks. I think Katy has fought hard to be with him and I think he’s been over it for a long while.
I don’t think it’s as messy as it is Orlando – to paraphrase Danny Glover – getting too old for Katy’s shit and keeping his distance. Why deal with Katy when their nanny that they pay for can do it? I’m sure it rankles Katy that Orlando won’t give her any attention.
Look, I get that we all hate Katy Perry and all but…. you ARE giving this man too much credit. He knows who he married, and he was at Jeff Bezos’ wedding last weekend, not her. He also believes a lot of the woo-woo bullshit popular with Billionaires and quoted Carl Jung after the divorce news. You can’t tell me this man isn’t also exhausting.
I’ve met him. He and I practice the same kind of Buddhism and I met him through that. He’s an okay guy in person. Definitely thinks he’s more famous and popular than he is, but he’s also a pretty chill dude. You can tell he has no time for drama.
They were soft launching stuff so if Bloom got photographed all over someone at the wedding it wouldn’t be a problem. I don’t know why they didn’t already make the announcement instead of soft launching., it’s not like their daughter reads the papers and they aren’t a couple that causes public frenzy, other than maybe they were still working on the wording? Or they were figuring out the behind the scenes legal stuff and for some reason wanted all that to be done before being official?
I have told many female friends going through Relationship Stuff that in the immortal words of Taylor Swift, “you don’t owe anyone an explanation.” Sometimes adults need a time out from each other. Nothing to see here, move on, who knows what the future holds. As long as Katy and Orlando don’t drag their issues out for the public or make annoying Instagram posts about “conscious uncoupling” trying to sell it, and take care of their daughter, it’s none of my business
Is “shifting their relationship” the new “consciously uncoupling”? Just say you’ve split, for pity sake, it’s fine.
I think they have been on and off for years. It was just more obvious now that she was on tour and he went to Bozos wedding solo. If they were together I think she would have scheduled time around the tour to attend. That wedding was in the works for years. It didn’t just pop up on the calendar.
I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets back with John Mayer. He seems to have some kind of toxic hold on his exes.
In light of the fact that John Mayer has been playing with the remaining members of the Grateful Dead for the last 10 years, I’m sure he has changed quite a bit. Not that he’s a hippie now, but his mind has definitely been “expanded” by hanging with those guys. He could still be an a-hole, but I think he’ll stay miles away from Katy.
So they finally confirm the split, and then . . . vacation together on a yacht?
