Tom Holland on how his epic Rihanna lip sync battle happened

Whenever Tom Holland and Zendaya are in the news cycle, Tom’s famous Lip Sync Battle performance inevitably starts trending. You know the one I’m talking about. Tom starts out doing his best Gene Kelly impersonation as he dances and lip syncs to “Singin’ in the Rain.” Then, midway through, he changes into a black corset with hot pants, a wig, and fishnets before tearing it up to Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” I’ll embed the video below. It is guaranteed to cheer you up on a rainy day (pun intended).

Tom was the guest on the most recent Scrambled with Gordon Ramsey. While they were chatting and making spicy fried chicken sandwiches, Gordon brought up that epic Lip Sync Battle routine. Tom said that no matter what else he does, his “Umbrella” performance is the thing that he gets asked about the most. He also revealed how the whole thing came about, from choreography to fishnets to getting rained on.

It’s safe to say that Tom Holland’s Lip Sync Battle performance is one of the greatest videos of all time.

As I’m sure you know, Tom channeled Rihanna in a short black wig and fishnet stockings as he put on an incredible performance of her hit song “Umbrella.” Tom was competing against his now-fiancé, Zendaya, whose performance of Bruno Mars’s “24K Magic” was super tame* in comparison to his “Singin’ in the Rain” X “Umbrella” mashup.

In fact, when Tom underwent a quick outfit change as the song “Umbrella” began playing, Zendaya was filmed looking super shocked with her hands covering her mouth as she watched her Spider-Man costar strut his stuff.

Now reflecting on the iconic performance, Tom has revealed that he and Zendaya actually agreed beforehand that they would keep their performances super chilled — which would perhaps explain her memorable reaction.

“Zendaya and I, we were chatting at the time about what we were gonna do. And we had agreed that we would take it easy,” Tom told chef Gordon Ramsay in a recent YouTube video.

Naturally, Gordon was super shocked by Tom’s admission. “What?!” he said, prompting Tom to continue, “That was the agreement. Like, ‘I’m not gonna do anything crazy, you’re not gonna do anything crazy, we’re just gonna keep it nice and easy breezy.”

“And then when I was working with the creative team, coming up with the ideas, they kind of pitched this ‘Umbrella’ thing. And as we were rehearsing, it got crazier and crazier. And the rain machine came in, and then I was like, ‘Fuck it, I wanna wear fishnets and do this. And I want a wig, and a quick change and stuff,’” Tom recalled.

When Gordon asked what Tom’s family said about the performance, the Spider-Man actor admitted that his dad wasn’t quite on board.

“When I told my dad, he was like, ‘Son, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I don’t think you should do that,’” Tom shared. “I was like, ‘No, Dad, it’ll be really fun, like I’m gonna have a good time.’”

Tom then explained, “I think he was just… At that time in my career, he was very worried about me becoming too famous too quickly. So he was really keen for me to not do extra TV shows that I didn’t have to do, to try and maintain that part of my childhood.”

[From Buzzfeed]

I love hearing behind-the-scenes stuff like that. It’s so funny that it started out small and just spiraled into this huge viral sensation. Thank goodness Tom didn’t listen to his dad’s concerns. I’ve probably watched that video a dozen times over the last eight years and I always chuckle whenever I see Zendaya’s reaction to Tom’s performance. Obviously, she wasn’t mad that he didn’t keep it “nice and breezy” because they got together sometime after that. Someone once commented that you can see “the moment” that Zendaya fell for Tom, and I totally agree. I’m pretty sure that’s the moment that the entire Internet fell for Tom, too, lol. He’s talented, he can gyrate, and he’s not afraid of getting wet. What’s not to love?

Tom was trending on social media this past weekend for a different reason. Spider-Man: Brand New Day started filming in Scotland, and there were a lot of pictures showing Tom in what appears to be a new Spider-Man costume. Technically, it wasn’t a new suit, but a nicer-looking version of the homemade one that Peter Parker had at the end of No Way Home. The “big” deal was that the pics showed Tom’s unedited bulge. Allegedly, it’s someone’s job to edit Tom’s bulge down while he’s wearing the Spidey suit. I didn’t know that was a job someone could have, but I’d like to know how to apply for it.

Here’s Tom’s Lip Sync Battle.

That’s when I fell for him, too. He ate that ish up, spanked it, and sent it out for a snack.

I don’t think people realized that Tom was the star of the dance musical Billy Elliot on London’s West End as a boy long before he was cast as Spider Man so his performance level is a 10. Him showcasing his talent so breezily produced a collective swoon ther is still happening

There was a great article (no longer up unfortunately) about the background putting this piece together. Tom really wanted to match the women in that first dance group and worked hard to get down the more feminine moves. That was impressive. At first, didn’t think his Gene Kelly piece was so good, which surprised me because I knew his dance background, then realized, he’s got the other outfit underneath/under the hat, plus the suit, etc. is rigged for a quick change, so must have felt uncomfortable moving in it. Great spin though. And no one was going to remember that part after Umbrella kicks in!

  2. Zed says:

T & Z were already together by the time of the Lip Sync Battle but I am sure this performance helped lock that relationship down.

My fave part is Zendaya literally falling on the group and LL’s just sitting there, jaw dropped to the floor. Effing GLORIOUS, Tom!

This was the moment I fell for him. That dance routine is so amazing, he’s so talented, and it is so sexy to see a guy so secure in his masculinity. I watch this video all the time.

It is, in fact, internet law, that if you come across the Tom Holland Umbrella lip sync clip- you must watch it.
I never violate that law, i always watch it.
Sometimes you get the version with the little singing in the rain piece at the front.

In today’s world of the dumb “manosphere” dudes, hocking supplements and talking about being alphas-
there is nothing manlier or sexier than the Tom Holland umbrella clip.
Just charisma and commitment sell the crap out of it.

And i am over 50, and Tom Holland is basically a child, so, its a no for me, but in that video- that is a real man.

It always makes my day a little bit better if i run across it.

it’s like scrolling through the guide and finding Dirty Dancing — one. must. watch.

Also the tidbit about the editor tracks – his BDE isn’t even trying to be low key.

    • questalynne says:

Ah, similar to the cat distribution system, I accept this additional internet law to watch this marvelous dance piece every time it appears on my screen. What a treasure and a delight for the eye and soul.

    • dee says:

This is such a good article!!! Really captures the energy of Tom and everyone who worked behind the scenes to get this to life

Looks like this might be the article I referred to up top. If so, glad to see Business Insider picked it up. My original bookmark showed it being gone from the website where I had read it previously. Thanks for posting!

I remember watching that and realizing that the younger generation really was different.

  14. Blithe says:

This is, quite possibly, my favorite video in the history of video. Like, ever. That is all. Lol. Swoon.

  15. Lightpurple says:

Some people know how to command a stage; Tom Holland is one of those people

  16. dee says:

I wish more boys and young men these days were secure in their masculinity like Tom Holland. Lean into dancing, singing and dressing up, rather than right-wing horrible podcasters

    • Tate says:

If only… our world would be a much better place.

    • Bqm says:

And he’s very masculine while flouting traditional masculinity too. Look at the muscles! They’re not gym rat huge bulges but rather he’s a very fit and athletic guy with a great core set. Like Chris Evans as Cap, he does a lot of gymnastics training too when playing Peter. His athleticism (gymnastics and dance training) helped land him the part. He did a bunch of flips when doing a late screen test with Evans.

  17. Digital Unicorn says:

I love this – I had forgotten his background in dancing. Everyone was just shocked – not just because he did it but because he was sooo good.

  18. IdlesAtCranky says:

I’m another who fell slap in love with Tom when I first saw this video on social media!

Always a joyful must-watch for me. The man has a marvelous sense of humor & sense of himself, and my gosh he has SKILLS!!

    💛💛💛💛🌼🌿

Such a gift to watch that again… might have watched it twice… thanks 🙏
