Chris Martin: Coldplay will keep doing the Jumbotron, ‘life throws you lemons’

It’s been just a little over a month since the Boston-area Coldplay show where coworkers Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot were caught on the kiss cam, aka the Jumbotron. The pair were not married — at least not to each other — but the world at large would have been none the wiser had the couple not telegraphed “Uh-oh, we’re in trouble!” by turning their backs to the camera and ducking out of view, essentially outing themselves. Andy and Kristin have since resigned from their jobs at billion-dollar tech startup Astronomer as CEO and HR Chief, respectively. Throughout it all, I almost got the feeling that the party most rattled by the whole scandal was Coldplay themselves. As the infamous moment was unfolding, frontman Chris Martin said, “Oh sh-t, I hope we didn’t do something bad,” as if it was the band’s fault that a couple was having an affair! Chris has since made a point of announcing the Jumbotron segment before it commences. At Monday’s Craven Park show in Kingston upon Hull, England, Chris reiterated that Coldplay planned to keep using the Jumbotron as a way to meet their audience.

“We are so happy to be here. Many of you have written signs. So, I’ll take some time to try and read some signs. Then we’ll see what happens,” Martin told the crowd, per HullLive and NME.

According to the outlets, he read a fan’s sign stating they’d seen Coldplay “three times in three months” and replied, “You were at that Boston gig. Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle.”

“We’ve been doing [the Jumbotron] a long time and it is only recently that it became a… yeah,” Martin reportedly continued. “Life throws you lemons and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you.”

Last month, Coldplay’s kiss cam caught former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR executive Kristin Cabot embracing at the band’s Gillette Stadium concert in Foxborough, Mass.

In a now-viral TikTok, the pair ducked and hid their faces, prompting Martin to joke that the two were having an affair. “Oh, look at these two! All right, c’mon, you’re okay,” he said, before adding, “Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”

Both Byron and Cabot later resigned from Astronomer.

Coldplay’s tour continues with another show at Craven Park on Aug. 19 followed by a string of concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium.

In the wake of the viral moment, Oasis’ Liam Gallagher joked about not filming fans at a show in Manchester, England on Sunday, July 20.

“Do we have any lovebirds in the house? Don’t worry, we ain’t got any of that Coldplay, snidey f—ing camera s—. It doesn’t matter to us who you’re f—ing mingling with, or tingling with or fingering with. None of our f—ing business,” he said.

[From People]

Oh my GOSH you guys, Liam Gallagher had me laughing so hard! It’s like A Tale of Two British Frontmen. On the one hand there’s Coldplay’s Chris Martin, fretting (guitar pun!) over whether the band did something wrong by their camera accidentally landing on two adults having an affair. And then there’s Liam of Oasis rolling off this poetry: “It doesn’t matter to us who you’re f—ing mingling with, or tingling with or fingering with.” That’s gotta make it onto at least some Oasis 2025 merch!

Anyway, I’m glad Chris seems to be reclaiming the joy of the Jumbotron. Coldplay can be really sweet with their fans; there’s one instance that happened at a show in Düsseldorf a year ago but is making the rounds on the internet again recently. Chris seemingly brought up a security guard onstage, and then the crowd went wild when the man, who turned out to be a local dance teacher, broke out into clearly-prepared choreography. It sure was a fun, far cry from when my mother and I spent a lost weekend in the city (don’t ask) during which my nine-year-old self thought it was the height of hilarity that I kept declaring that I was the Düssel while my mother was the Dorf.

Liam Gallagher is a jealous nong. He wishes he could finger someone.

    Carry on Jumbotron.

  2. Mireille says:

LOL! I found Liam’s comment hilarious. And Coldplay should have their Jumbotron fun. Not Chris’ fault he was used by karma to expose a couple of cheaters. Plus, I want the memes and parodies to continue (thank you Phillie Phanatic).

    • Mightymolly says:

      “Used by karma” 😂 😂😂

I feel like CM/Coldplay have some weird connection / are somehow tapped into the deep essence / energy of the universe.
Their stuff is so Basic and easy listening, and he’s kind of … well he was married to GP. But some of their songs, man, they seem to tap into an essential truth that really gets to me, like it’s got a deep meaning completely separate than what the song is supposedly about.

So it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Karma’s like, oh look, Coldplay’s got a JumboTron, let’s take it out for a spin and serve

Chris should know about cheating. He cheated on his wife with Alexa cheung and Kate bosworth.

Liam’s comment is found poetry. I hope it makes it into someone’s rap / song / spoken word performance. Or South Park.

  4. Bumblebee says:

After ‘My Universe’ with BTS, and many other feel good songs, Coldplay can do no wrong. The world and betrayed spouses needs the Karma Kam!

    • MichaelaCat says:

      Agreed.

My Universe is a gem. Coldplay-BTS interactions are great. Finally a group that doesn’t look down on them because they’re Asian.

BTS charity projects are a sight to behold too.

  5. MY3CENTS says:

Does he always wear the same outfit when performing? Strange.

    • DK says:

I think they are his costumes? Like Taylor, BTS, etc., all have certain outfits they wear for the whole tour, so it doesn’t seem that strange to wear the same thing?

I mean, TS, BTS, etc. also usually have costume changes *during* the show, but they’d wear the same outfit for the same segments each performance. I don’t know if Martin changes up his outfits during the show, but he does seem to prioritize comfortable looks of a similar style that allow him to hop around, etc., while performing.

    • Bumblebee says:

Looks like 3 different outfits. Same style, different colors. Maybe different nights of the tour? Don’t tell, but I do the same. If it’s comfortable and fits, yeah, I have multiple in the same color.

  6. Amy G says:

The fact I found this hilarious is probably a commentary on the times we’re in . . . .
“I kept declaring that I was the Düssel while my mother was the Dorf.”
