King William ‘won’t have cousins helping him like the Queen did’

Last week, the British press really turned on the Prince and Princess of Wales in a big way, all because of the Waleses’ planned move to their “forever home,” Forest Lodge. Alongside the Forest Lodge news, William and Kate’s office confirmed that they will never live in Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace at any time, and they plan to live a humble life in a modest eight-bedroom lodge, where they’ll mostly tweet their support instead of showing up. Robert Jobson accused William of wanting to be a “part-time monarch,” but imo, even that is wishful thinking – they’ll be lucky if William even commits to part-time hours. Robert Hardman basically said that when the time comes, the prime minister will have to order the Keens to live in Buckingham Palace (or at least order them to live in London). Well, Richard Palmer at The i Newspaper tried to do some clean-up on the whole “lazy parttime king” narrative. The basic message is: no, you don’t understand, William isn’t going to do jacksh-t, because he’s more impact-focused!!

Under King William, the number of working Royals is expected to fall to five or six, around half the number now and a third of the total at times in the late Queen Elizabeth’s reign.

“William won’t have cousins helping him like the Queen did. So he’ll have to work smarter,” one Royal source said. It is likely to mean more of a focus on short-term campaigns and events bringing various charities together rather than the King and his family each representing hundreds of voluntary organisations.

Princess Anne, who marked her 75th birthday on 15 August, has indicated she is prepared to work on and Edward and Sophie, once minor figures, are expected to play an increasingly prominent role in this reign and the next under William. But there will be no room for their children on the taxpayer-funded payroll.

Prince George, the 12-year-old future king, will undertake his own Royal duties eventually, perhaps after a spell in the Armed Forces but it is too early to say for definite yet whether his siblings Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven, will have careers outside of the Firm or will be working Royals supporting the family.

“William and Catherine are modern parents. They may have their thoughts but I think they’ll wait to see what the children want to do,” one former senior aide said, refusing – like several others – to rule out the possibility that both Charlotte and Louis could ultimately have careers outside the family.

If Prince Harry and Meghan had stayed, then they would have had a prominent role but the chances of their children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, representing the British monarchy in the future are said to be negligible and probably would have been even if their parents had remained.

William V’s reign is likely to continue to embrace the pomp and ceremony for which the Royal Family is famous but in many ways it will start to resemble more closely the more informal and modest counterparts in Europe, the so-called “bicycling monarchies”. Once seen as a negative by Britons wedded to the grandeur of our Royalty, these more informal monarchies are now just as popular, if not more so, than ours domestically. What worked for Queen Elizabeth often does not for King Charles and when William becomes king, it is likely that we will see an even more informal style.

Even during official engagements there will often be less formality. William, like his brother Prince Harry, has never really wanted to have line-ups of dignitaries at every event and is no fan of Lord Lieutenants, the monarchy’s ceremonial official representatives in each county whose expenses cost taxpayers around £1.5m a year.

In 2016 William suggested he would be less political than his father and more like his grandmother Queen Elizabeth. But since then he and Kate have eschewed many of the traditional ribbon-cutting duties, choosing instead to focus on a small number of campaigns, such as ending homelessness, combatting climate change, and giving children a better start in life. That approach is expected to continue in the next reign. “It’s all about impact,” one senior aide said.

A smaller number of working Royals doing fewer engagements should mean fewer staff – the couple currently employ 68, about half the number who worked for Charles at his peak as Prince of Wales. It could also mean a real-terms drop in the cost of the monarchy, and possibly savings for the taxpayer. The Palace, which is already sensitive to criticism about the cost of the monarchy and worried about a review of the Sovereign Grant due in 2027, will be conscious of the need to save money. How much exactly remains to be seen. At the moment the cost of monarchy amounts to £132m directly from the taxpayer in the Sovereign Grant, rising to an estimated £500m when security and various other funding sources are added.

[From The i Newspaper]

Under King Charles, there’s already been a reduced number of working royals and yet the Sovereign Grant has been vastly increased. That’s because the SG was set as a percentage of “income” derived from royal properties, and the Crown is now making so much money from leasing their land for wind farms. It’s very, very likely that “King William” will still have an SG over £130 million, all to finance five or six working royals (several of whom will be over the age of 65). “It’s all about impact” is WILD considering nothing Will and Kate do has any impact, ever. Their charitable patronages are always in desperate need of money, and there are fewer royals acting as patrons to fewer charities. The idea of a “bicycling monarchy” is that the monarchy is more streamlined AND responsive AND visible. What William wants is not that – he wants an Edwardian monarchy where he can disappear for weeks or months and people only expect to see him once in a blue moon, and he doesn’t want to do literally any work beyond that.

Half a billion pounds because of security. That’s worse than who could have thought. All that swanning around in multiple international holidays and Uber choppers, they have security 24/7 with them all the time.

    As for this

“ to focus on a small number of campaigns, such as ending homelessness,”

    By having multiple forever homes.

    “ combatting climate change”

With Uber choppers, multiple holidays and Greek island yachts

“, and giving children a better start in life”

    Ahhhhhly Yahhhhhhs

    • Hypocrisy says:

Exactly this… they actually think their words cancel their actions. It amazes me just how out of touch and absolutely delusional (stupid) WanK are, I just wonder how much longer the people that fund these fools will tolerate this.

  2. “Work smarter”? These are two words that are not in King Pegs dictionary. He doesn’t work and he isn’t smart. As for cousins helping him? Helping him do what? Play video games or vacation or day drinking? Or maybe help him think up new ways to hate his brother? What a load of shit. Is “work smarter “ there new version of lazy as f**k? I believe it is!

  3. Smart&Messy says:

Why does no one question the fact that all those duchies and estates still belong to that one family and the British people pay all kinds of rents, duties AND upkeep for all of them?? Give that shit back to the people, get a nice sallary, commeasurate to other heads of state and go to the office every day.

    • Laura D says:

@Smart&Messy – it’s not so much that they own so much or even that they charge rents. It’s that they pay naff all in taxes for the privilege of doing so. If I remember correctly the SG doesn’t cover security costs so the £130 million is a low ball figure. People put up with it from QEII because she at least made the effort to meet her subjects on a regular basis and by doing so journalists/reporters were reluctant to criticise her. I pity whoever is PM when William eventually sits on the throne because trying to convince the public that a Zoom King is worth upwards of £130 million is going to be a pretty hard sale. At the very least they should make him liable for Corporation/Business/Income taxes.

      • Smart&Messy says:

Incredible that this conversation came to a head because of the stupid new mansion. Trashing H and M could only delay it this far. I expected it more when he is already king.

  4. Meredith says:

Well, after all, who needs cousins when you have your children? Much cuter! /s

    • Monika says:

Yeah, the kids have to fill the gap left by other royals as soon as possible. I do not think that George will have the luxury of the big break from royal duty after education to enjoy private life as his parents Willi and Kate had.

  5. Anonanon says:

I think maybe we knew the cousins weren’t going to help but I actually see that level of wishful thinking in other royal forums all the time— once Charles dies and his cousins/siblings retire or die off, William will ask Zara et al to step up. Hopefully this will put an end to that delusion.

    • one of the marys says:

If the cousins are not financially dependent on William can the cousins say No? They all see and know what he’s like. I’d say they’re all hoping Charles hangs on for many years so the public sees less and less of them and doesn’t think of them as working royals

    • Blujfly says:

It’s also promoted by the media, especially Richard Eden, constantly pushing forward Beatrice and Eugenie.

    • Megan says:

Charles made it clear years ago the only working royals will be his kids. William will never ask anyone to step up because even that requires some effort.

  6. jais says:

Well, it will be his choice not to have his cousins working in the monarchy. And that will be bc he doesn’t want to share the money and prefers to keep it for himself. Bc the SG is unlikely to be reduced in 2027. But hey it would be cool if it was reduced. Seriously doubt, however, that William is advocating for that so he can spare us with all this bs talk about cost-cutting.

    • Lady Esther says:

Right? William is pissy about Lords Lieutenants of the aristo set costing less than 1.5 million pounds a year while he spends almost that much on school fees for his kids out of the (TAXPAYER OWNED VIA THE CROWN ESTATES) Duchy? Please.

And I’m surprised at Richard Palmer naming the actual costs at 500 million pounds a year, normally only Graham from Republic UK dares to mention figures in that range. Go Richard, take out your long-simmering hurt from the RF treating you like shit on them! We’ll cheer you on!

      • Blogger says:

Yes, that was surprising he’d disclose that astronomical figure of their annual cost + security.

Does it also cover the Middletons?

      • jais says:

Which is weird bc William is hiding out and living that aristo life and yet he’s throwing the aristo Lords Lieutenant under the bus for 1.5m when he’s doing who knows what with how much money??? Like, come on. It’s so very “hey, look over here” to talk the heat off the eye-watering amount of money he gets. Makes you wonder what the aristos really think of William.

      • Lady Esther says:

(cackling) Oh, I think it’s clear what the aristos think of them, given how they reacted to Kate trying to banish Rose from their set. Even QEII and Philip were all WAIT A SECOND HERE! And Diana, a true Spencer aristo…the world is still reeling from what the BRF did to her…

And I’m sure the aristos weren’t happy for being denied to wear all their finery at Charles’ coronation. If aristos can’t take their ermine and tiaras out of mothballs, what’s a Heaven for?

If there’s one thing I’m looking forward to when William becomes King and the establishment comes for him and his Zoom dreams, it’s the revenge of the aristos. British aristos have nothing left to lose. Let it be glorious!

  7. Eurydice says:

Why will there be no room for Anne and Sophie’s children on the payroll? The SG can’t be decreased – the percentage of income derived can be decreased, but not the actual payout. There’s plenty of money if he wants to recruit his cousins. And how will his focus on impact be different when he becomes king? We’ve already seen that he can’t focus on anything for more than an announcement and he’s had zero impact with any of his projects.

    • Lady Digby says:

Honey in addition to not employing his cousins, the Grinch ain’t hosting them at Christmas, Easter or for Summer at Balmoral either. All those traditions will be swept aside by Scrooge because he’s not putting his hand in his pocket for them. BM are parched now, wait until Will really pulls up the drawbridge on them.

  8. Mads says:

This guy is in for rude awakening when he ascends to the throne. If, as I expect, Charles dies within a couple of years then the sole focus for the UK media will be on WanK; the kids will still be minors and years away from taking on royal duties.

If the Sovereign Grant isn’t modified in some way as a result of the review in 2027 to significantly reduce the money given to the monarchy, there will be problems. The UK economy is in trouble and even the most rabid working class royalists will not swallow the PR.

What the government and Establishment will do is something that I can’t wait to witness. Hubris is going to be William’s downfall.

    • HeatherC says:

Except he isn’t in for a wide awakening. There is no mechanism that says he HAS to do anything except maybe fulfill his constitutional duties, opening parliament etc. And Kate has NO constitutional duties. Unless it’s unilaterally voted to overhaul the payment system or the whole idea of a monarchy, the Wails can laugh all the way to one of their forever homes, no skin off their noses. They’ll continue to collect money.

  9. Bqm says:

The Edwardian monarchy, like the Victorian one before, it was very visible and the extended family carried out a ton of events, with serious, actual impact, at home and abroad. Victoria may have retired to Windsor, Osborne and Balmoral after being widowed (though really just from 1861-71) but even she was seen more than William. And her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were very public.

William wants a Georgian monarchy. Though without the culture.

  10. Tessa says:

work smarter? Peggs does not work much and is not smart or smarter. Modern parents? LOL. Lazy self entitled couple taking many vacations and not setting an example for the children. imo. Peggs has already been “political.” talking about how he will ensure there is peace in the middle east..

  11. Me at home says:

“ The idea of a “bicycling monarchy” is that the monarchy is more streamlined AND responsive AND visible. What William wants is not that – he wants an Edwardian monarchy where he can disappear for weeks or months and people only expect to see him once in a blue moon, and he doesn’t want to do literally any work beyond that.”

🎯. To bicycle to work you have to actually… work. Not order your staff to draft vapid tweets, hate on your small niece and nephew, and put together insipid soft-focus videos while you sunbathe on another country’s foreign minister’s megayacht before heading into your two-month vacation.

  12. Tessa says:

Peggs will no way have the bicycle monarchy. I think he likes the showing off of royal wealth but does not share it. Less formality? So why does Peggs demand that he be called Sir.

  13. Truthiness says:

If William and Kate are such modern parents, then let’s cut out the monarchy altogether and let them raise their children to be productive members of society.

  14. Blujfly says:

Anne has not indicated she intends on staying on – she has indicated she plans on wrapping things down at age 80 and eventually retiring formally like her father. Edward and Sophie are non entries. The Wales will continue to do little and as their children reach teenagerhood and young adulthood the battles with the media over privacy will explode. William will spend the first most of the time once George turns 16 embroiled in legal and other fights with the media. What will all this look like in 10, 15 years?

  15. Blujfly says:

This is the same nonsense the wales have been churning out to support their nonexistent workload for over a decade. But the Queen was right when she said you have to be seen to be believed. If you want to be beloved you must be present. The meet ups and handshaking and the hellos are what people care about, not “impact” that doesn’t exist. I remember reading that Boston’s old mayor had met something like 80% of the city’s residents over the years he was mayor because he constantly interacted with members of the public and he was very popular no matter what as a result. Well, that’s the royal family. People want to know they care.

  16. Gemini says:

All of the European so called bicycle monarchies are social democracies. William is a feudal landlord.

    • ParkRunMum says:

this is my second reply to @Gemini today, and, again, bull’s eye!!!! You nailed it. The irony is, the UK emerged from WWII with a real commitment to social democracy, Orwell wrote paeans to this new theory of government, the NHS was created, the welfare state was born, the Bank of England was nationalised, whereas the countries on the Continent, at least in the West, were less rash to throw themselves into socialism, wholesale, they mostly adapted to a mixed model economy, what the Germans call the social market, a blend of public / private initiative, with national insurance (old age, sickness, etc.) updated from prewar times to cover postwar conditions. ….the UK preserved few bastions of the prewar world. A lot of aristocrats with 90% death duties plus exorbitant operating costs signed their piles over the to National Trust. Once that trend attained critical mass, there was no point hanging on, as the only point of having a pile was to spend every year processing from one pile to another for house parties, balls, hunting, wife-swapping, then all simultaneously descending on London for the social season, Nov-Feb IIRC. It must have been a sumptuous scene. The monarchy is the last remaining element, and it’s no substitute. Every sovereign had to adapt to their times, & QEII conceived her role as public service, to complement the social evolution of the UK. William’s failure to launch any plausible alternative begs questions about the current nature of the UK. There are so *many* local independent initiatives and so much social deprivation, there really is a big society and there really is a need for it. He could do so much good at home, rather than chasing Africa, or climate change. Be a community organiser.

  17. Liz-L says:

Spot on kaiser. Kate dresses like the Edwardian era and behaves as if she’s in it too. Her and William have regressed the monarchy. They’re lazy, dull and uninspiring.

  18. Betsy says:

That article is so sugary sweet it’s dripping syrup! William is shoving everyone else off the payroll because he wants it all and wants to do nothing for it and no one is going to take him to task. Evidently his grandparents were the people sort of kind of keeping him in check? They’re not doing it now anyway, and Charles is too befuddled with cancer and Camilla to get him in hand.

Banishing Harry and Meghan was galactically stupid. Just out of sight dumb, and all because of William’s ego. And Charles’s, but Charles is a small petty inward looking man and William is a small petty tyrant with an explosive temper that he can’t control. (I’m aware Charles also has a temper, but no one calls him “incandescent with rage” on the regular so I assume William is worse). They got rid of people who would have been sparkling workhorses, had they only been given a modicum of respect.

(And I continue to love the color of that blue dress Kate is wearing. My god I love turquoise!)

  19. Tuesday says:

“ Prince George, the 12-year-old future king, will undertake his own Royal duties eventually, perhaps after a spell in the Armed Forces but it is too early to say for definite yet whether his siblings Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven, will have careers outside of the Firm or will be working Royals supporting the family.”

Wasn’t it reported in the last year that Kate already said he’ll no to George going into the military? Looks like the powers that be are pushing back.

    • Unblinkered says:

Yes, I remember that being reported that George wouldn’t be expected to go into the military on finishing his education. It was two years ago.
I always found it strange that this should be under discussion when he was only ten at the time, perhaps they knew already that he wouldn’t be suited for it……

  20. Harla says:

I have followed the Danish, Swedish, Dutch and Spanish royals on SM for some time, mostly for the fashion if I’m being honest, and I “see” the royal ladies out and about far more frequently than I’ve ever seen Kate. And most of the other royal ladies frequently make trips abroad to visit connected charities and highlight work being done on the ground. Kate has only ever traveled solo to Denmark and Luxembourg. So sorry to say but William will ride his “bicycle monarchy” into the ground and I’m here for it!

  21. one of the marys says:

68? Kate and William have 68 staff? How ever is this possible and what are they all doing???

    • Lady Digby says:

Most seem to be bitching to the media about Will’s incandescent hatred of his brother whilst also explaining why he’s not doing the day job because of parenting/school runs/laser focus/ leaves on the branch line/ wrong type of snow/ his 96 year old grandmother died prematurely a mere 18 months after his 99 year old grandfather also died prematurely blindsiding him twice/ Meghan made him cry and pinched his brother ( whom he hates!)/ can’t find the remote control/ dog ate his briefing notes/ no baby sitter for the kids/ it’s grim Oop North/ can’t understand the natives/ gets travel sick/ read on internet mingling with peasants causes hair loss.

  22. Amy Bee says:

Considering that both the press and the Palace had a problem with how Harry and Meghan wanted to do things and didn’t like that they were more popular than the heir and his wife, Richard Palmer is deluded to believe that Harry and Meghan would have had a prominent role if they stayed.

    • one of the marys says:

It seems William always expected Harry to do a lot of work and tours and public facing work. What he didn’t anticipate was Harry and Meghan being so good at it that they wowed the public. William cut off his nose to spite his face. Imagine how private he and Kate could have been if he let H&M have the spotlight. Imagine the goodwill if Kate wore the smartset or was photographed in her kitchen with the Together cookbook or if William visited the Invictus team

  23. Becks1 says:

The article is interesting. I think its meant to be a defense of william but the underlying message is – what is the money for? Where is the value for that 500 million a year? The bicycle monarchies cost a lot less than that. So if William wants that kind of approach, you would expect to see a reduction in costs and Palmer makes that pretty clear here.

William won’t have his cousins helping him (none of them want to be financially dependent on him) besides the odd garden party here and there but even that is losing importance. no one wants to go to a garden party to see Zara Tindall – and they especially won’t in 20 years when people will barely remember who she is.

The fact that almost 400 million is spent on the royals OUTSIDE of the sovereign grant is ridiculous.

    • jais says:

Makes you wonder if it actually is meant to be a defense of William. Palmer should just go rogue already.

      • Becks1 says:

He’s one that I think might. he was with the express and then got laid off and he’s really not a fan of W&K. i can see him reading the writing on the wall at some point and deciding to write a book or a series of articles about what is really going down with the windsors.

  24. Lauren says:

This narrative is getting seriously annoying starting with the idea that the British court is better at pomp and ceremony then the other European royals. But the main point I will make is the amount of work done by all the others Monarchies especially of the ribbon cutting variety they just don’t were crowns and robes while doing it. Final point recently the Spanish monarch left his vacation early because of the wild fires does anyone really think William will ever do that

  25. Lady Digby says:

Aren’t the Men in Grey worried about Will ? The cousins should be recruited to future proof the monarchy so as Kent’s and Gloucesters retire they can carry out bread and butter engagements. It is crystal clear that both Will and Kate are going to be unicorns so scaffolding around them has to be erected to supplement Anne, Ed and Sophie delivering the basics. Really can’t see it as feasible Will and Kate getting more duchy income as monarchs plus SG for the occasional tweet, video and balcony wave. Will is so odd : doesn’t want to do the work himself but didn’t want Meg and Harry to remain to outshine him? Okay about existing dullards doing break and butter engagements but won’t pay or share any limelight with cousins. So BM is demanding to be fed and he’s pulled up his drawbridge in response. Has he salted enough loot away already that he can afford such brinkmanship? Does he believe in the proverbs that the dogs may bark but the caravans move on and he can do whatever he likes?

  26. Lady Digby says:

The Palace, which is already sensitive to criticism about the cost of the monarchy and worried about a review of the Sovereign Grant due in 2027, will be conscious of the need to save money.
Private Eye said weeks back that KC in particular was worried about Parliament even debating it? Yes that it doesn’t go through on the nod, they get to debate it and ask awkward questions like are they necessary? Are they value for money? Why is the heir only doing a third of workload carried out by much older royals? Why has his staffing costs gone up and yet his output not increased?

  27. Lady Digby says:

Another pertinent question is does Will see no value in bread and butter events around the UK? Are they meaningful and the cement the bond between monarch and his people or just empty display? Does Will want to be impactful with his projects or is this modernising an excuse to cut back on public appearances which he finds irksome? Is Will just idle? The air ambulance job was literally helping people and I was proud of him then because that was a real job. However, I am given to understand from coverage in the tabs that even then he wasn’t fully committed to that either eg not doing enough shifts and frequent holidays again? Does Will want to modernise or simply take the money and stay at home?

  28. Rita says:

Like the queen’s cousins who were sent to an asylum and never received any kind of finnancial or emotional support, Nerissa and Katherine Bowes-Lyon? Just google “queen elizabeth disabled cousins” and see the true horror story that comes up!

  29. Monlette says:

What? No “eye-watering” proceeding any of those obscene numbers in the article above? But God forbid Meghan spend some of her hard-earned money on something fancy for herself.

  30. sunnyside up says:

And who is paying for renting land from the crown, all of us who use electricity. So more people than those who pay income tax, 99.9% are paying that rent.

  31. BeanieBean says:

But he’s got six cousins…do they all hate his guts?🤔

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

BeanieBean, I don’t know how they feel about him, but I have taken note that neither Bea nor Eugenie are exposing their children. It seems to me that they are keeping them protected from the media. If they decide to become “official” working royals, part time or full, their children would be up for grabs by the media. And to be used as scapegoats.

  32. jferber says:

Meaning, no witnesses to blab to the press. No mention of multiple mistresses, multiple vacations paid for by dictators. no more people counting his events or seeing what he does with money, etc. He sounds more like a future Mafia boss than a king. And I am including offing erring witnesses, but in a discreet, quiet way. So no one gets shot in his/her favorite restaurant. the BM ( British Monarchy/Mafia) has had better luck with car accidents.
