‘It did not matter too much’ to Prince William to be ‘knocked out of the spotlight’

All week, royal reporters have been writing “analysis” pieces of Prince Harry’s visit to the UK. These are not supposed to be confused with the royal-commentary clownery, in which various “royal biographers” throw daily hissy fits about the Sussexes for $10 or whatever the going rate is. The analysis pieces are supposed to be high-minded and semi-official. What’s funny about the analysis is that it’s so bittersweet and hilarious. There’s the inevitable recap of How We Got Here, minus the actual history of abuse lodged at Harry and Meghan. Then the reporters sadly note that Harry is still incredibly popular and charismatic, and what a shame it is that he just decided one day to move to California! Well, GB News’ Cameron Walker wrote one analysis and it made me laugh pretty hard, mostly because of the mention of Prince William.

Fast forward to 2025, however, and veteran royal journalists tell me they feel a sense of “déjà vu”, particularly after Prince Harry visited Nottingham on Tuesday. The organisation, media operations, and crash barriers all felt like we were covering a royal engagement.

Prince Harry was visiting Nottingham’s Community Recording Studio (CRS), an organisation he’s been supporting for more than a decade, where he announced a £1.1million personal donation to Children in Need to support young people affected by youth violence as an “investment in futures”.

It was clear he wanted to be seen in front of the cameras, and this week marked the first time GB News was invited to officially cover Prince Harry’s work, suggesting he wants to work with the British media, rather than against it.

While a vast majority of the Royal Rota was in Nottingham with Prince Harry on Tuesday, his estranged brother, the Prince of Wales, quietly carried on with his own mission to support young people. He visited Spiral Skills, a Lambeth-based charity, which has received funding from Homewards: the future King’s mission to demonstrate it is possible to end homelessness, making it rare, brief and unrepeated.

Prince William has taken after his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II – never complaining and never explaining. It is unclear how he felt about being knocked out of the spotlight, but I suspect it did not matter too much to him. After all, in the eyes of the British public, the Prince and Princess of Wales remain the most popular members of the Royal Family.

The Duke of Sussex appears to have turned over a new leaf by focusing more on philanthropy in a royal-like way. It is a complete contrast to Meghan, who is living the Californian dream by launching her own commercial business and producing glamorous Netflix shows. Prince Harry is at a crossroads. Let’s see which path he chooses to permanently take.

[From GB News]

The mention of the emotional-support polling is telling. Oh, William doesn’t mind being overshadowed because of some polling numbers that say he’s super-popular! If he’s so popular, why doesn’t anyone turn up at his events? Why aren’t the royal reporters covering William’s busywork events this week? If he’s so unaffected by Harry’s visit, why have William and Kate thrashed around for days, begging for people to pay attention to them? As for what Walker is writing about Harry: “The Duke of Sussex appears to have turned over a new leaf by focusing more on philanthropy in a royal-like way.” Royals do NOT own philanthropy! Philanthropy is not tied to royal titles! By undertaking charitable work, Harry is not begging to “come back to royal work.” At this point, these people are just choosing to be this obtuse.

Please enjoy this video of Peg being the most popular royal as he left his busywork event on Wednesday.

Not one person waiting for William to emerge. A crowd waiting for Harry.
    So mortifying.

    • Tina says:

The best thing about that video is that you can tell he knows it as he walks to the car. So mortifying. Went all the way to wales to look like a fool.

    • Eurydice says:

Omg, I can’t stop laughing. It’s all sad trombones for him.

    • Advisor2U says:

And they were waiting for Prince Harry for hours – many were there when he arrived at the recording studio, and were still there when he left three hours later. That’s showing respect and appreciation, the things Willy and Kitty don’t get from the public. It’s the sycophantic royal and right-wing media that are embiggening these two airheads.

    • “While Peg quietly got on with his mission “. You mean that Peg who came up with this little event on the fly got no attention for his obvious PR stunt to try to out do his brother. There I fixed it for you.

      • DK says:

Exactly! He wasn’t “knocked out of the spotlight” by Harry; he tried to knock Harry out of it by lining up events only after he knew Harry would still be in town doing some.

And it didn’t work. No one cared, all eyes were still on Harry.

    • westcoastgal says:

It’s that important looking red folder that got me!

    • Cj says:

Karma has never looked better on him.

Also, PH visit aside, what has he done for wales that they’d even want to show up? Man couldn’t even learn more than 5 words in the 40 years he’s had before becoming PoW. He’s getting back exactly what he put in – nothing.

    • Hypocrisy says:

I love it, it has made me laugh 🤭 probably should not admit that…

  2. Me at home says:

🎯 as usual. No notes. And I very much enjoyed the video of Peg leaving his event–the guy in the background didn’t even look up from the sidewalk.

  3. sunnyside up says:

So they didn’t even put up the barriers for William.

    • Julia says:

The only time the royals get crowds these days is when they go to city centres which are already busy and people come to gawp out of curiosity. Then the royal reporters will report the huge crowds failing to mention that the area is normally packed with people anyway.

  4. Dee(2) says:

If William didn’t care there would not be an article saying how much he didn’t care, because polls tell him how popular he is. I don’t recall Queen Elizabeth ever having courtiers talk about how she didn’t care about what Charles or Anne was doing, because polls showed that she was the most popular Royal. He cares a great deal. In fact I would say this is one of the only things he probably does care about consistently. And I see he was doing the Trump thing of turning and waving so they can get a photo like it was the huge crowd waiting instead of one person who said something. That guy with the black shirt on looked up and then look back down in his phone.

Their fantasy that every single thing that Harry does is because he misses them and wants to come back is so sad. He knows you hang on his every word and action. It’s quite hilarious to me that the first time they were invited to cover him, they had to report he has given over a million pounds of his own money to charity.

And why do these people always write about Meghan earning money like it’s some sort of bad thing? They acknowledge that they don’t receive any money from the royal family, they describe with glee how they don’t have a home in the UK, how exactly do they expect for two adults and two children to survive in a capitalistic society? Isn’t Cameron Walker working by writing this?

    • Jais says:

Yeah, I’m confused by the crossroad of which CW speaks. Harry and Meghan both will continue to make money in various ways to support themselves and pay for security. That money will pay for Harry’s plane tix and security when he does visit the uk and when he donates HIS money. Thats just kind of how the world works? I feel like just rudely saying well duh people.

      • Eurydice says:

Yes, CW doesn’t have to guess what path Harry will take. All he has to do is look at the path Harry has already taken. Harry’s been involved in philanthropy for half of his life and he hasn’t had a problem with business ventures, either.

      • jais says:

I’m guessing that they are trying to insinuate that Harry is at a crossroads of whether he should return and be a working royal again. But that’s not even a possibility. Working-royal from what I can tell means you get paid SG money to do charity. And that’s not something will happen.

  5. Lady Esther says:

I found it highly amusing that in the big long article in the DM with photos of Harry and William from that day, most of them mis-captioned William as “Prince Harry.” LOL

  6. FancyPants says:

Well… how can all his adoring supporters show up for him when all his events are “surprises” that are thrown together at the last minute? If they knew in advance, the throngs would *definitely* be there throwing roses at his feet.

  7. Layla says:

Give it a day or two, like Kaiser say, with the “rage briefing” incoming, it’ll be clear enough. Also, neither W or K made it on the front pages. They tried. SHE might make them tomorrow but not today

    • Kittenmom says:

Depends on the condition of her wig!

    • Me at home says:

Isn’t Harry flying home tomorrow? Most of those flights leave in the morning. So maybe Katie and the Wig will get some coverage, unless somebody gets a snap of Harry being driven to the airport.

      • booboocita says:

The only way the Wig knocks Harry off the front page is if a sudden gust of wind knocks the wig askew or off.

  8. Maxine Branch says:

If it did not matter so much, why bring it up?

  9. Alex Can says:

Don’t forget that polling also shows that William is the sexiest bald man in the galaxy.

  10. Al says:

Serves him right for only going out to “work” because of Harry. He is as fake as Kate.

Also, why the dig at Meghan? What’s wrong with her focusing on her business? What a stupid comment to make. I’m beginning to think that a lot of these royal reporters are empty headed.

    • Julia says:

I’ve come the conclusion that most journalists are not very bright. There are few excellent investigative reporters and brave people who report from war zones and disaster areas but the majority that are task with writing click bait from their desks are quite dim.

    • jais says:

It’s just to taint Meghan with being commercial and making money…which is just not a big deal to most people. Like yeah, people make money. I’m not sure but the crossroads seems to be about will Harry continue to be commercial or just do charity. Which…ummm, he will have to do both as well. Those bills don’t pay themselves.

      • Advisor2U says:

Harry’s new commercial endeavour is about to be announced this month/September, a spokesperson for Harry said a few months ago.
I wonder if it’s gonna be something totally new, like a fashion brand (colab), or something in education?

      • sunnyside up says:

Those who don’t like H and M doing commercial work they should fund them instead of complaining. Britain is no longer funding them, they can do whatever work they like as long as it is legal.

  11. Durga says:

Why does Willy even try to compete with Harry? Why not do some high profile events that wrap around Harry’s visit instead of going head-to-head with him? Doesn’t make a lick of sense.

  12. Amy Bee says:

If this was true William (and Kate) would not be out and about this week. Just last month the press was upset that they weren’t invited to Harry’s visit to Angola so they need to stop pretending that he’s turning a new leaf. He has never stopped doing charity work.

  13. Becks1 says:

It clearly matters to him, if it didn’t he wouldn’t have planned these events and we wouldn’t have this article.

  14. Moniquep says:

    Ok, once and for all.
Harry hasn’t returned to philanthropic work, HE NEVER LEFT IT!! He has been doing it consistently for the past 6 plus years since they left the vipers nest.
And like every other non taxpayer funded ordinary citizens, they work to support their family. Not to mention the additional security expenses made necessary by the hate campaign being waged against them on a daily basis by these same people who denigrate their efforts.

  15. Advisor2U says:

I’m shocked that Harry’s team has allowed the hater from GBNew channel, Walker, at this private engagement (Chris Ship’s ITV was not accredited this time, by the way. I think because of the stunt they did with the Invictus Games Canada broadcasting rights at the beginning of this year. Ship was making pretend reports on the steps outside harassing bystanders and people invited to the event, when they were leaving the building).

This GBNews guy gets his first invite, but still can’t help himself to not insult Harry. That Channel is the worst of all the right-wing H&M hating UK (broughtcast) media. Every day, multiple times a day, at least 90% of their content is to attack H&M with the most ridiculous accusations and falsehood.

Harry, none of the British press has any loyalty to or apriciation for you, (other than occasionally) – not BBC, not The Guardian, let alone any of the right-wing ones. I hope you and your Comms team get it sooner than later. You’re trying to reach out to these royalist blood sucking monsters for better coverage, but they’re always gonna show deference to the leftover royals, and will do anything to take you, and especially your wife, down. It will never work as long as you live outside the UK/ royal fold.

    • Advisor2U says:

      *appreciation

    • BayTampaBay says:

“Harry, none of the British press has any loyalty to or apriciation for you”

None of the British Press has any appreciation for anyone. Writers, covering the British Royals, employed by the British Press write whatever their editors tell them to write which comes down to stories and attack pieces that will generate maximum clicks and/or sell newspapers.

    • jais says:

This article is silly but iirc Cameron Walker is not actually the worst of the worst in his reporting. I might be wrong on that but he’s not foaming at the mouth with vitriol. It’s a low bar. At the end of the day, Harry very specifically said he was not working with certain outlets that had committed unlawful invasions of privacy against him and his wife. He never said all media.

    • bisynaptic says:

Only Byline Times, as far ass I can tell.

  16. BayTampaBay says:

The GB news guy who wrote this story is so out-of-touch if he is writing what he truly believes.

“Prince Harry is at a crossroads.”

Harry is NOT at a crossroads. Harry has left the building.

“Let’s see which path he chooses to permanently take.”

Harry has chosen his path by permanently relocating to Montecito and living a life that the losers “left in the building” can only dream of!

    • jais says:

Apparently the dramatic suspense must be heightened. Saying Harry’s already left the building is too confronting and deflating. So yes what is this crossroads? Permanently deciding to visit more?

  17. Mads says:

They arranged for bus loads of kids to be brought in and handed mini Union Jacks for his arrival, ensuring the pictures show him in the forefront of “adoring” crowds and perpetuating the lie, whereas that video shows the uncomfortable truth, of which 🥚 is fully aware, nobody gives a t*ss.

  18. Linney says:

No matter what Harry and Meghan do, they can’t win. If they do charity work, they are grasping and desperate for attention. If they make money, they are greedy. To bash Meghan over this visit when she isn’t even in the country is insane. And if anyone thinks William isn’t freaking over Harry’s popularity, I have a bridge I’d like to sell you…

  19. Henny Penny says:

If anyone is at a crossroads, it’s the royal family, most particularly William, and the British media, not Harry.

William, you need help, baby. Everybody was lying to you when they told you how special you were. You know it, and now so does everybody else. You need to fire Knauf and check in to inpatient rehab. Immediately. Please go get some therapy and find a personality that isn’t entirely based on how jealous you are of your younger brother.

  20. Lover says:

How dare Meghan make money by selling things people want in order to support her family and give large sums of her own earnings to charity. The classy royal way is to plunder the public coffers and live in huge estates they inherited through no merit of their own, and any work they do is largely pointless but also mostly optional. Poor Harry, his philanthropic efforts almost seem royal but would’ve been more dignified if he had donated money filched from the taxpayers instead of earned on his own.
