Courtney Love says daughter Frances Bean was the abusive one

The NYDN’s Rush & Malloy got the strangest interview with Courtney Love over the weekend. It’s strange, first of all, because she sounds so coherent. Secondly, it’s weird because she’s talking about how her daughter, Frances “The Bean” abused her (rather then the other way around) and how Courtney has reconciled friendship-wise with Edward Norton. Oh, and the third weird thing: Courtney might be dating Uma Thurman’s ex, hotelier Andre Balazs…? What the hell? The stuff about Frances-on-Courtney violence is a sad story, but the stuff about Ed Norton is funny/interesting. Something about how Courtney’s cracked out delusions made her think that Norton had lost $300,000 of Courtney’s money when really he tripled her investment. How could Courtney not remember that?

Courtney Love may finally be on the cusp of happiness. With her first album in 10 years already looking like a hit, the Hole singer is closer to a reunion with daughter Frances, has made peace with old beau Edward Norton and may have a new beau lined up.

Let’s get to that last part first. The Love missile has been spending an awful lot of time lately with Andre Balazs, according to spies. The dashing hotelier, ex-husband of modeling czarina Katie Ford and ex-boyfriend of Uma Thurman, was seen with Love last week at the Mercer and the Minetta Tavern.

Love insists Balazs is just “an old friend and my sometime landlord.” Our spies say the friends looked like they should get a hotel room, which Balazs has plenty of.

Meanwhile, Love has been making nice with Norton. A few weeks ago, she went on Twitter to blame him for her allegedly losing $300,000 in a fund he told her to invest in. But Love has now tweeted that she was “wrong” and that he actually tripled her money.

“I feel very bad,” Love tells us. “I have the greatest respect for Edward. He could be the President of the United States. I could be his drug czar – ha, ha.”

Love says Norton also has been a “force of good” in serving as an informal communicator and mediator between her and 17-year-old Frances, whom a restraining order bars Love from speaking to. (A friend of Norton’s insists that his role in the drama has been minimal.)

Mother and daughter fell out last October after a donnybrook at their Tribeca apartment.

“I was talking on the phone,” recalls Love. “Frances came out of my room. She was hysterical. First she was crying at my legs, saying, ‘Why was I born?’ Then she bites and scratches and pulls on my hair. She punched me.”

A source who says she witnessed the confrontation corroborates that Love “never hit Frances. Not one time. All the punches were coming from Frances.”

Love says, “I grabbed her with both arms. That left a bruise and she took a picture of her bruise.”

By December, a judge had taken Frances away from Love and placed her in the care of the mother and sister of her father, rock god Kurt Cobain, who took his own life in 1994.
Love finds it “creepy” that Frances should be represented by Geraldine Wyle, who is also the attorney for Britney Spears’ father, Jamie, in Brit’s guardianship case. Love suspects Jamie convinced Wyle to retaliate against Love after Love claimed that a female member of the Spears family had told her Jamie had molested her. Wyle and a rep for Jamie both declined to comment.

“Geraldine told Frances all this pie-in-the-sky b.s. – that she’d get all this money,” charges Love, who at the same time understands her daughter’s confusion. “Look who her parents are! We were a little lax.”

Love has heard that, after two months away from Mom, Frances has told California child services “she wants to come home.” She tearfully adds, “I should have never gotten mad at her. I love her so much.”

Love believes “we’ll be back together” no later than August, when Frances turns 18 and becomes a legal adult.

A hearing in the case is scheduled for April 8. On April 27, Mercury releases Hole’s record “Nobody’s Daughter.” The first single, “Skinny Little Bitch,” was the most-added song on rock radio last week.

Love shrugs off ex-flame Billy Corgan’s threat to make trouble if she tries to release two songs they collaborated on: “Billy is talking out his a-. His people already gave permission.”

And word is director Bennett Miller is considering the “People vs Larry Flynt” actress for a part in “Moneyball,” co-starring Brad Pitt.

“Who gets a second shot at 45?” asks Love. “I’m a lucky bitch.”

[From Rush & Malloy]

Yes, Courtney is a “lucky bitch” much in the same way Lindsay Lohan is a “lucky bitch”. They’re both lucky to be standing relatively upright after consuming a massive amount of drugs. As far as the claims that Frances abused Courtney… what do you think? I don’t really know who to believe or how I really think this sh-t went down. My gut tells me that Courtney isn’t the kind of person to smack around her daughter. But when I ask myself if I think Courtney is capable of violence, my answer is a definite “yes”. On the other side, I do think Frances is a screwed up kid, and she probably blames her mother (correctly) for a lot of her problems. I really have no idea.

I am losing respect for Edward Norton for hanging with this hot mess.

  2. Icecat says:

The whole situation is EFFED up. Why is Courtney releasing this statement? Why would she throw her OWN daughter under the bus saying she was the one abused?? This should be a private matter, if she really cares.. I want to hear it from The Beans mouth!

There is no doubt that there was abuse, but I am inclined to think that it went both ways. AND – I still think this whole ordeal with The Bean changing guardianship is because she dosen’t want her mother to be able to take HER inheritance….That she rightly deserves…

  3. meme says:

wow. didn’t think courtney could stoop any lower. ed norton’s involvement is this is minimal at best. he’s probably just concerned about Bean. when he dated courtney she was doing ok.

  4. Jazz says:

She looks like the cocaine fairy in that picture.

  5. Eileen Yover says:

LOL Jazz! “Cocaine Fairy” …that was awesome.

  6. canadianchick says:

Frances Bean looks tough already, given how messed up both parents are/were, I’m not surprised.

  7. nikki says:

Courtney Love always was,is and will be a drama queen and an hysteric mediawhore!
she changes advice as i change underwear: every day!

  8. Trillion says:

What a nasty piece of work….

  9. knotstu says:

The time is come that i wish to refund courtney with kathleen clarkson’s head in a bell jar…. do you think she would like that?
Kathleen clarkson is the person that signed kurts death warrent.
Hasn’t payed up and i’m now looking to collect.
Last i heard of her is that she won some money on the lottery.
    Time marches on.

  10. snapdragon says:

courtney is a pathetic trainwreck who will do anything to be in the limelight, even if it means publicly talking smack about her own daughter. and if frances did punch courtney, then good on her – i’m sure mommie dearest deserved it. poor girl.

  11. jess says:

    @knotstu can you please elaborate?

  12. JaundiceMachine says:

I know it’s not a popular opinion, but I have a lot of love for Courtney (unintentional pun).

I think unlike the Lohan, Court has a lot of deeply rooted issues that begin with very serious abuses as a child, and culminate to losing her partner to depression/suicide. That’s enough to fuck anyone up, and I wouldn’t wish Court’s life on my worst enemy.

That being said, it’s hard to read about her antics lately. In true punk fashion, Courtney is completely oblivious to the concept of “tasteful discretion” – something I both love and loathe about her.

It sounds like Frances is going through a lot of heavy shit (beyond your normal teenage drama) and I wish Love would stop defending herself to the media and start acting like a mother. Frances needs a lot of love and support, and even though Courtney has a lot of shit to work through herself, she needs to get it together and be there for her daughter. That’s what you do when you’re a parent.

  13. Mentok says:

I’m not taking sides, but as to Love’s violent nature, I recall her throwing a compact at Madonna’s head from about 20 feet away. I’m sure it wouldn’t give one a concussion, but it probably smarted a bit.

And that was someone she barely knew…

Now add a drug or 27 and someone who riles one’s emotions and, well… ?

    Maybe they’re both abusive.

  14. Katija says:

    @ Dorothy

I think Norton is getting involved for Francis’ sake, and that really speaks to his character. This obviously can’t be good for his reputation.

  15. Kim says:

Why does anyone hire her for anything? She has no talent. She is famous for being married to Kurt Cobain, who if still alive Im certian they would be divorced her by now, if he wasnt already going down that path when he died (most people think he was going to divorce her). She is ugly, crude and untalented. She is a lucky bitch thats for sure.

  16. Aussie Mama says:

Well it would be hard to not be abusive, when you see yer ma off her tit’s every waking moment.

  17. gg says:

    Vile hands.

  18. Solveig says:

Everytime I read Courtney’s words I can’t help but feeling sort of sad. I never liked her and I never will but she’s so pitiful that I’m not capable of blaming her for dragging Frances in this s-it.
And if Frances Bean is really abusive what is she to blame for? She has had a life full of dread and pain… Poor girl..

  19. Dannni says:

She talks sense when she is medicated and in a program. All of this comes with the territory when a parent has dual diagnosis: addiction and mental illness, in this case, bipolar with psychosis. Anyone who has lived this, knows it. She will never take responsibility for her own faults however when it comes to her child.

  20. Whitey Fisk says:

Poor Frances. She has had the deck stacked against her since before she was born. Let’s hope whoever she’s with is taking good care of her and protecting her from this lunatic.

  21. uSheep says:

im gana go out on the limb and say i like courtey. she’s gone through a lot of shit. although it doesn’t excuse her behavior i think she was the best mother she could be in her situation. look at her childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. she is lucky. she is a brilliant lyricists, and i hope her album doesn’t flop..cause she should be remembered as courtney love: one of the best female (mostly) rock groups that helped change the generation. and she was a brilliant actress in the people vs larry flynt. i just hope things work out between her and frances.

  22. knotstu says:

    2 jess
Yeah, Kathleen owes big time for that contract,i think she lives in Brixton ,london, england.
She looks kinda tanned, but that could be dirt.
    A NASTY piece of work.
It’ll be good when she’s gone!
    More air for us all.

  23. beanlover says:

And right now she’s ranting to frances via twitter to not let people in particular her current boyfriend fb like shit!

sad, painful and not as amusong as some would thnk

If somehow frances has lost a cent from kurt’s royalties and trust – there’s a lot of fans that will be out for blood

kurt fans seem to feel a parental nurturing instinct towards frances bean
