Sydney Sweeney: ‘I’ve never gotten anything done… I’m going to age gracefully’

Sydney Sweeney covers the latest issue of Variety, all to promote Christy, the bio-pic of boxer Christy Martin. Sydney really wants this to be an Oscar contender, and it might work. I don’t have a sense of the Oscar race yet, it’s too early and there’s not one major contender in any category at this point. What I do know is that Sydney is a younger actress who understands how to hustle for the things she wants, and she’s not afraid of courting controversy to get attention. Fair enough, although she should probably draw the line at eugenics-lite ad campaigns. Some highlights from Variety, where she also addresses the “Bond Girl” rumors.

Playing boxer Christy Martin: “For Christy, the ring was her escape. It’s almost like you’re a caged animal inside this ring, but it’s a place where she feels the most free… I am definitely a caged animal in a sense. Acting is my ring. It’s where I feel freedom. The set is where everything else goes quiet.”

What she was told when she was starting out in the industry: “I have very strong eyebrow muscles. And I had someone tell me to fix my face or else I’m not going to make it. I should get Botox. I was 16! Or I’m in a casting and I’m reading my scene and the casting director is eating a bag of chips, and I’m like, ‘You’re not paying attention at all.’”

On the hype around her nonexistent fling with Glen Powell: “Honestly, the press did it themselves. There was no leaning in, per se. Truly the tabloids and journalists just created it and kept going. Even if we were just standing next to each other, it was ‘They’re standing two inches apart!’ Glen and I genuinely care for each other and have a love and respect for one another. I love being with him. And I think people just truly saw a really beautiful pairing.”

She feels good, strong and confident: “I play a lot of very divisive characters, and I think that a lot of people think they know me, but they don’t. So when people think, ‘Ah, she’s a sex symbol,’ or ‘She’s leaning into that,’ I’m like, ‘No, I just feel good and I’m doing it for myself and I feel strong.’ And I hope that I can inspire other women to be confident and just flaunt what they got and feel good because you shouldn’t have to apologize or hide or cover up in any room,” says Sweeney, hinting at the jeans uproar.

Losing her Euphoria castmate & friend Angus Cloud. “It was definitely a very emotional experience to go back to a set and not have him be there with you. He was such a special person, and he was taken way too young,” says Sweeney. She was in Idaho when she learned of Cloud’s death. “I’m glad I was home because I was surrounded by my family. I think my first call was Maude [Apatow], and then Jacob [Elordi], and we were all just crying on the phone together. It’s not something you want to bring people back together over, but I’m thankful to have my castmates to be able to process all of that together.”

The Bond Girl rumors: “I can’t. [Seven-second pause.] I don’t know. [Ten-second pause.] To be honest, I don’t know all the Bond rumors, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the franchise, and I’m excited and curious to see what they do with it,” she says. But would she be interested? As she mulls the possibility, she regains her composure and answers assuredly. “Depends on the script,” she says. “I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”

She hasn’t had any cosmetic work: “I’ve never gotten anything done. I’m absolutely terrified of needles. No tattoos. Nothing. I’m going to age gracefully. It’s really funny. I’ll see things online like ‘comparison pictures.’ I’m like, ‘I’m 12 in that photo. Of course I’m going to look different. I have makeup on now and I’m 15 years older.’”

On Christy Martin & domestic violence: “It’s a very personal issue that’s important to me, and I hope that through Christy and her story, it can raise more awareness,” Sweeney says without elaborating on how the legacy of domestic violence has touched her. “It’s personal,” she repeats, her blue eyes flashing pain. Sweeney has selected the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence as her charity. Founded in 1998, the Texas-based nonprofit “provides and customizes training and consultation, influences policy, promotes collaboration, and enhances diversity with the goal of ending” the scourge.

[From Variety]

That’s great that she’s decided to work with the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence. I feel like many younger actresses only want to associate with charities working with softer issues. That’s not the right word, but you know what I mean – there’s a reason why so many celebrities support a charity like Baby2Baby, and so few celebs work with local, state or national women’s shelters or domestic violence charities. As for Sydney’s lack of cosmetic work… yeah, I actually believe her? Now, is she going to stick with this promise to age gracefully? Who knows. I wouldn’t be surprised if she eventually turns up with Mar-a-Lago Face.

  1. Ah yes a Mar-a-Lago face. Yes that’s what will happen. Yes she plays divisive characters but in real life she is one.

I’m old school, i still refer to it as Brazil face
      (the movie, not the country).

      But same effect.
Maybe not as old – but not with a tinge of – not quite human.

  2. ncboudicca says:

Ahhhhh, young people should never say never. 🙂

    • Mightymolly says:

Someday Sydney, going braless in a sheer dress won’t be as appealing to the male gaze. And then you’ll have to face that promise to age gracefully.

  3. Josephine says:

Between cozying up to bezos and the eugenics ad, I’m guessing she is going for the kardashian brand of staying relevant – at any cost, including your dignity and morals. It would be nice not to pretend that is “hustle” and label it as it is.

  4. ThatGirlThere says:

Working to support domestic violence is interesting for her since her political party affiliation is intent on stripping women of their rights. Rights that help women stay independent of violent and controlling relationships.

She will absolutely get work done.

    • Mightymolly says:

They are the party of cognitive dissonance.

    • Tate says:

Also the party doing everything they can to hide the Epstein files.

    • DaveW says:

I wrote this in another comment further down, but I know the woman who founded/leads NCDSV and she is tight with the Biden’s plus there is not a MAGA on that board. So good but interesting choice.

      • Mightymolly says:

If this is truly her cause, I applaud her. I suspect she received good advice to make herself more palatable to mainstream women, the ones who will ultimately support her career should it be a long one.

  5. Sonya says:

Those boobs are either going to get reduced or a lift when she gets older.

    • Mightymolly says:

No judgement on that point. A reduction makes sense for her tiny frame, especially if she ever has a pregnancy. But she uses them as her calling card right now. I’m genuinely curious whether she’s so naive as to believe she will survive Hollywood’s contempt for older women. Or she’s just straight up lying.

    • MY3CENTS says:

Also her hooded eyes. She might have to get them lifted as they might drop as she ages and interfere with her sight.

      • olliesmom says:

I have hooded eyes also and I’m I know that I’ll have to address that someday soon enough.

  6. Tis True, Tis True says:

That’s what they all say in their twenties. I’m very curious about whether she’s reached the point where she’ll hang onto being famous for being famous for the long haul or if she’ll become a trivia question in ten years time. Let’s be honest, that’s what having “Oscar nominee” in front of her name means. She needs that to keep going. Actors get cast based on the trailer getting to announce there are Oscar nominees in the cast. Jared Leto is still around because he managed to snag that Oscar.

  7. MsKrisTalk says:

I don’t believe a word she says. I think she has had some work done on her and leans in to the MAGA bimbo image. I think she leads with sex while talking like she has marbles in her mouth. Her characters seem flat to me. Didn’t Glenn’s girlfriend imply that they were playing the Hollywood they are/ they’re dating to promote their film? She said that he told her that he had to do it to get ahead in the Hollywood game and that’s the reason that they broke up.

    • CheekImplant says:

Yeah, her voice is grating AF.
I don’t recall ever watching a movie that she’s been in, but I’ve heard her speak in commercials, interviews and maybe a movie trailer.
I’m shocked that she doesn’t change her voice when she’s acting! Regardless of character she’s using the same nasally, Novicaine mouth, valley girl vocal fry?!!??
She sounds like she’s doing an impression of Kristen Cavalerri

      • MsKrisTalk says:

She has no depth in her acting and she’s no current day Marilyn Monroe. She’s forgettable except for her boobs. Hence the see through dress and maga behavior.

  8. DaveW says:

So that’s interesting she’s going to work with NCDSV as they are more advocacy/policy based vs direct service. I worked there for a few years under a DOJ Office on Violence Against Women grant as a training and conference manager. FWIW, the grant was not renewed when Bush Jr was elected and wanted funding to go towards “faith based” organizations and abstinence programs.

The other part that kind of surprises me is the woman who founded and still leads the organization is a longtime friend of the Biden’s. She worked with him on the Violence Against Women Act as well as policy and trainings around DV and sexual assault in the military. I’m still friendly with her and am tempted to reach out so see if they actually are even aware that Sweeney has decided to partner with them, lol.

  9. Ameerah M says:

She’s already had her lips done. But okay girl.

    • CheekImplant says:

By the time she hits 30 she will start to Mar A Lago her face.
Especially because she’s already demonstrated that’ she’ll do the dumbest stuff to get people talking about her, she’ll sure as hell use plastic surgery to keep herself relevant.

    • CheekImplant says:

By the time she hits 30 she will start to Mar A Lago her face.
Especially because she’s already demonstrated that’ she’ll do the dumbest stuff to get people talking about her, she’ll sure as he’ll get into plastic surgery to keep herself relevant.

    • Call_Me_AL says:

Do we already know that her breasts are natural? I’m seriously asking. I don’t have a good eye for these things, I suppose they could be natural, they’re just so big and perfect. I don’t really hate her for showing them off, I prob would if I looked like her and could make more money/boost my career if I showed more of them (in dresses etc on red carpets). I don’t understand why people hate on her FOR THAT so much; so many people show more than she does.

    • Nancy says:

And her nose! She has had work done; there a photos of her pre-Euphoria at Hollywood events and red carpet that prove it. When in doubt, remember, Getty and AP don’t do heavy edits to photos.

    • Smatone99 says:

I think she’s had work done too. Nose at a min..

      • Smatone99 says:

OK because I had nothing to do I did a dive. She’s had visible work done to eyes, nose, lips. Plus new teeth.

  10. MaisiesMom says:

Yeah that’s what I said too, lol.

I held off until last year. But I got tired of taking good care of my skin, avoiding the sun, never smoking, etc. and still looking older than my relatives and friends next to me in pictures who had gotten Botox and fillers. I caved and got the Botox (not the fillers) for my son’s wedding and I’m glad I did.

  11. Sara says:

Its not the gigantic, most likely natural boobs, its that they seem to be her entire personality and talent

  12. Silver Birch says:

She has an amazing body, for sure. But those dead eyes…I actually think her face is unattractive because of those eyes, and plastic surgery can’t fix that.

    • Auntie Fah says:

Fully agree on the dead eyes.
I couldn’t put my finger on it until you mentioned it.
Just really bad vibes from this chick.
Can’t put my finger on that either, but man. Toxic aura.

  13. Tuesday says:

Apropos of nothing, I feel that Sydney and Sabrina Carpenter are essentially the same person.

    • Lady Baden-Baden says:

Nah – Sabrina Carpenter appears to have a sense of humor about herself

    • Abbie says:

I honestly can’t tell them apart unless it’s written who is who. If you showed me two pictures of them without telling me which is which I’d have no idea.

  14. Grant says:

As an Awards Season gay, I have to take umbrage with the statement that it’s too early and there are no major contenders in any category, which is not correct. There are plenty of Oscar contenders already coming together. People have all but crowned Jessie Buckley our Best Actress winner for Hamnet. I don’t think Sweeney’s getting in anywhere unless it’s at the Globes.

    • Lady Baden-Baden says:

Agreed. Nominees are looking pretty locked in various categories now. She’s unlikely to make it into Actress – another very competitive year and her film didn’t get great reviews

    • Auntie Fah says:

“Awards season gay” is something I’d aspire to. Love it.
      And yes, GG at most.

  15. KMAC says:

LOL I said the same thing at her age. I had my eyelids done a few years back, I love the outcome. It was looking like a ball-sac up there.

  16. martha says:

    Never say Never!
