Jonathan Bailey is People Magazine’s 2025 Sexiest Man Alive: great choice?

This is one of those rare moments where everything aligned perfectly for People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. Jonathan Bailey is this year’s SMA!! An excellent choice and a historic choice – Bailey is the first openly gay man to be chosen as People’s SMA. People Mag requires their SMAs to do an interview and photoshoot, so the only guys who agree to it (at this point) are usually promoting something. Bailey has Wicked – For Good coming out soon, so this is part of the (well-timed) promotion. But it’s not just some cheesy promo – Bailey is an “internet boyfriend” and someone who has been steadily smoldering his way through television shows and films for five-plus years. He’s beloved by costars, directors, women and men. Scarlett Johansson couldn’t stop kissing him on red carpets. He just seems like a lovely, decent man. You can see People’s cover package here. Some highlights from Jonathan’s interview:

Enjoying his fame: Ahead of the finale, Wicked: For Good, hitting theaters Nov. 21, “Jonno,” as his close friends call him, is enjoying the last few weeks of calm before the fan-frenzied storm begins again. “You get to a point where you look back and you go, ‘Wow,’ but you never for a second think that’s where you’re headed,” he says. “You know, to be able to do things that you dream of.”

Being named the Sexiest Man Alive: “It’s a huge honor. Obviously I’m incredibly flattered. And it’s completely absurd. [Laughs] It’s been a secret, so I’m quite excited for some friends and family to find out. I told my dog Benson [who joined him at the shoot]. But no, I haven’t. How do you spell . . . NDA?

When he started being comfortable in his skin: “At various moments in my life I’ve been like, “I’ve got this,” which is sometimes met by a deep spike of fear and self-doubt. When I was really young, I was very confident about who I was, and maybe I lost that as I grew up. We’re all sort of trying to get back to the origin, aren’t we? But I was swimming in the sea about an hour ago with a good gang, and I felt all right in my skin.

He wishes he could play the cello or speak multiple languages: “I wish I could play the cello. I started having lessons, and it was pretty harsh. And languages — I couldn’t grasp languages. You know, I can speak [in French] about my house. That I get a bus to school and that I’ve got a cat. And I do actually [say that] . . . after a glass of red. If I’m in France.

A perfect date night: “Oh God, it totally depends. I love a walk, I do love dinner, theater, films. It depends what number date. You know, if it’s like date 100, then like Legos, although we Brits say it singular “Lego,” and pizza. Some of my best dates have been Lego dates.

Deal-breakers: “Bad communication, lack of transparency. Doesn’t like Lego. Actually, I’ll only be with somebody who can speak three languages. Yeah, and they’ve got seven degrees and a doctorate. Otherwise they’re just not good enough.

The last time he was moved to tears? Well, I did see Wicked: For Good yesterday. But beyond watching my own work, in a good way I get moved to tears by family quite a lot. Like my niece was pupil of the week, and I was just so proud of her. And she’s the eldest of the next gen of Baileys. And that made me well up. In fact, all my sisters, when they send pictures of their kids — I do find family does make me really emotional.

His first celeb crush: “I’d say Prince Eric [from The Little Mermaid], but also Trini in Power Rangers. I remember accidentally throwing two garden tools over the fence trying to be her.

[From People]

He’s too cute. He’s reportedly single as well, at least that was what I read a few months ago. Then again, I get the feeling he keeps his relationships pretty quiet, which is probably easier to do because he’s based in London. Close to his family, beloved by women, respectful to his female costars, cute as a button, great accent, great fashion sense, loves tennis and Legos. Like, he’s literally the dream guy for men and women.

  1. Inge says:

Wonderful choice though a bit sad that he isnt wearing his slutty glasses.

One of the best choices in years btw but have heard that in recent years others (Pedro Pascal for instance) were asked but turned it down.

  2. Still In My Robe says:

    No notes. Perfection.

    • Chanteloup says:

ITA! i did not know who this guy was until 5 minutes ago but I see why people love him! he just exudes sweetness and joy Oh my

      • Barb Mill says:

Bridgerton put him on my radar. After he was the male lead in season two I was in love.

Now I want to buy some legos and have lego dates with my H.

      • MissF says:

Same! He gets my vote for his sheer love for his doggie, and his charm!

        Plus he’s very 😋

  3. NoBS Please says:

    Love him!

I must have watched him and Simone Ashley 20 times in Bridgerton S2 (fast-forwarding everything else, except the bits with Queen Charlotte, who was mostly very lowkey funny).

Well deserved, he’s not lost his moral compass as he remains an activist and an all-round decent guy.

  4. ThatGirlThere says:

Ughhh…I adore Jonathan and his handsome face. This has been People’s best choice in a long time.

    • Looty says:

My neighbor was chuckling at how her fantasies of Jonathan Bailey are uncharacteristically (for her) unselfish, imagining herself constantly saying things like “I can accept that”, “we’ll work it out” and “you don’t need to do anything that makes you uncomfortable “. He really is adorable.

    • Wilma says:

I did not ever expect People Magazine to get it right, but even as an asexual person Jonathan Bailey does it for me.

  5. sevenblue says:

Thank you Lord 🙏🙏🙏 After Blake Shelton (no offense to Blake), it really became ridiculous. Jonathan really broke a lot of prejudice against gay men playing a straight love interest. People Magazine’s note “We know, we nailed it” is also perfect 😭😭 I loved the cover with the dog much more than the first cover which was the one circulating everywhere.

  6. Honey says:

Handsome, talented and dog lover. Yep, well deserved.

  7. lamejudi says:

Watch “Crashing” if you can. I saw it on Netflix years ago, and Bailey’s charisma is off the charts in it!

    Perfect choice!

  8. Missy says:

Thee perfect choice! I just love him.

  9. Becks1 says:

this is the first one in several years that I’ve heard got it and thought YES!!!! He really IS the sexiest man alive!!!!

Good pick People, yes, you did nail it, finally.

  10. Lili says:

    I like him

  11. Ponsby says:

Yes! You know what? Spot on, they really did make an excellent choice this year, what a charm boat. Beloved by all, and wildly talented to boot.

  12. Tuesday says:

Must admit, I fell in love with him in Bridgerton and I now watch anything he’s in. He was the best part of that Jurassic World movie.

  13. ariel says:

    Me. Who?
Aw, a puppy!!! It is perfect!

I have yet to have the desire to see wicked.
I am sure i will at some point and i will likely love it, i just haven’t been interested.
So, i don’t know who this guy is.

But it is a really cute puppy.

    • sevenblue says:

He is also in Bridgerton!! I recommend it if you like romance series. That is where he got a lot of female fans as the romantic lead.

  14. jais says:

Love the dog in the picture! Although the dog could be moved over to the side just a little bit more…just saying, lol.

  15. Kirsten says:

    Excellent choice.

  16. Mego says:

I also loved him on wicked, only he makes being a 40year old man playing a teenager believable. 🙂

  17. Nic919 says:

    Great choice or greatest choice?

  18. Noodle says:

There is no better choice. I was introduced to him in Bridgerton, which led me a lot of really great British shows. Crashing, Broadchurch (where he’s quite young and adorable), and Fellow Travelers with another love, Matt Bomer. Each show is so completely different from each other (especially Crashing, which is a Phoebe Waller Bridge production), and he’s perfection in all of them. He can play anyone and make it look good.

  19. maxine says:

why oh whyy doesn’t he play for my team :'(

    • Normades says:

Who cares? It’s not like you’d ever have a chance anyway. I can watch Bridgerton and totally lust after Anthony knowing that Jonathan the actor is gay.

This is a great pick the best in year. I heard People went through a change in editors recently and this is a great move.

      • Maxine says:

Haha yes but a girl can dream!!

Interesting re people mag- maybe I’ll have a look, haven’t read them or the other rags in ages

  20. HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

I saw him running in Central Park a couple years ago and oh. my. God. He should get Sexiest Man every year.

  21. MaisiesMom says:

I didn’t even know this was about to be announced so it was a nice surprise. What a great choice! He’s a doll and so freaking talented. A no-brainer, really.

  22. QuiteContrary says:

He is a freaking delight, the definition of swoony.

  23. sunny says:

This is a sexy, sexy choice. He is gorgeous, smart, hilarious, and INCREDIBLY TALENTED. Many people discovered his in Bridgerton but he is also such a terrific stage actor and if you haven’t seen his early work(like Crashing or Chewing gum) or his sexiest work(Fellow Travellers), I would recommend.

He has the kind of charm and humour that is impossible to ignore and it is telling how many of his costars adore him.

Last year, everyone was telling People magazine to make a better choice. His name came up a lot.

Congrats to the first openly gay SMA winner! They couldn’t have picked anyone better.

  24. Little Red says:

He’s completely swoony and smolders with the best of them. A great choice and is at least one nice thing about 2025.

  25. Emily says:

Hell yes. That man can have chemistry with anyone because he is chemistry.

  26. Elon's Sink says:

JB is the most perfect choice for SMA! I’m so glad it wasn’t Glen Powell.

  27. Grant says:

Yes, yes, YES! He is gorgeous and charming and fantastic in every way. As a gay man, I’m so excited that they’ve finally picked a gorgeous gay man for this title. He was so good in Wicked!!!!!

  28. Aidee Kay says:

Jonathan Bailey is THE BEST and I didn’t even like his season of Bridgerton (sorry Bridgerton season 2 fans). But he himself, just the person, the man, is amazing: kind, smart, legit talented in multiple ways (sings, dances, acts, plays the clarinet beautifully), and hot. He uplifts his female scene partners rather than looking down on them. I’m a huge fan. I saw him in Richard II at the Bridge Theatre in London and he was terrific.

  29. Traveller says:

He had me at the dog.

  30. seaflower says:

    Perfect choice

  31. Isabella says:

He is adorable on Chicken Shop Date on Youtube with Amelia. Check it out if you need a good laugh today.

  32. ShoppeGirlMN says:

My favorite choice in the last forty years! Season Two of Bridgerton was Oh-My-Hell best sexy TV ever. And I’ve loved him in everything since.
