Sir David Beckham was finally knighted today by King Charles

Previously, I called David Beckham’s quest for a knighthood his “retirement project.” He really groveled and begged for a knighthood for years and years, and the Windsors got off on withholding it from him and making David do their bidding. I wondered aloud if, at some point, David’s knighthood-seeking behavior actually hurt his brand as a celebrity, especially those photos from the Chelsea Flower Show. Funny thing about those groveling photos though – they worked, finally. Just a few weeks later, Buckingham Palace announced that David would finally receive his much-longed-for knighthood.

Well, today was the day. Charles actually waited until Prince William left the country, which is so funny. Charles also wouldn’t allow William to do the investiture ceremony, apparently – the king took care of it himself, and you’re now looking at Sir David Beckham, freshly knighted by the king. David brought his wife Victoria and his parents to the investiture, but it doesn’t look like they brought any of their kids.

Throughout this knighthood retirement project for David, I’ve often wondered if Victoria ever gets the ick about David’s obsequiousness and groveling. Look at her face in these photos… a mixture of contentment, emptiness, amusement and maybe a flash of disgust too, right? Like, this really was *his* thing, not hers. She doesn’t need to be a dame, and she’s not groveling for jacksh-t… other than a Vogue cover, obviously.

Is it that warm in England for Victoria’s dress?

    • Mei says:

I definitely couldn’t wear that dress at the moment (nor would I want to, it’s fairly tragic), it’s only been around 15-16C here earlier in the day. All for the fashion, dahling.

      • Kat says:

She looks like hr feet are killing her in those awful shoes.Yes it is all about fashion with her.

  2. All the kiss assing and groveling and begging has finally paid off. All for the title of Sir a useless title if there ever was one! Or as Mary Pester used to call them Charlie’s chocolate medals.

  3. ThatGirlThere says:

All that brown nosing paid off for David. Hope it was worth it in the long run to be beholden to a lazy prince w/ no values.

    Victoria’s dress is lovely.

All that ass kissing finally paid off

Maybe Charles really is dying. lol. After all these years David finally got his underserved knighthood. I don’t care what his old fans say his playing days was mostly pr. He is a really lucky man.

I will say that I think I like David the person. I always enjoy his reality shows.

It’s not something I understand caring so much about, but it was clearly really important to him, so I give the man props for achieving his goal. (Famous Americans have done far worse in the name of “patriotism.”) The more I see of retired David, the more I like him. He’s wound pretty tight, but if being punctual, organized, and particular about ALL your stuff is your worst personality trait, he could certainly do worse.

And regarding Victoria’s thoughts on it all, I think that’s just her face.

  7. maja says:

I will never understand people like that. And what is he getting it for? If it is supposed to be an honour. And Mrs Beckham? Without words…. 🥺

  8. B says:

They certainly giveth and taketh away titles over there. Maybe Victoria’s expression is due to facial work obstacles…

  9. Blithe says:

As an American, I lack a real understanding of the class structure in England. I do get that this has been deeply meaningful for Sir David, so I’m glad that he got the honor that he craved, and that his parents attended the ceremony.

  10. Over it says:

Is this really the time to want anything or be anywhere near the left behinds. It’s all so ick. David literally has zero dignity. How sad and pathetic.

  11. tamsin says:

I think that it might mean a lot to his parents because of their generation- his children, not so much. Like the picture of Sir David striving ahead of his family- it’s his award.

  12. Amy Bee says:

David’s grovelling has finally paid off. He has absolutely no dignity and Vicky looks like she did touch up for the special occasion.

  13. Kim says:

lol they finally gave him his knighthood just so they could (try to) distract from Andrew.

  14. HuffnPuff says:

Can we talk about the facial hair not matching the hair on his head? And the facial hair is incredibly dark too. Are we sure he isn’t shilling for Just for Men?

He wanted the knighthood and as the knighthood is supposed to be about people repping brand uk, I feel like he deserved it and good for him that he got what he wanted. I personally find it silly but I’m not a monarchist or a royalist. Aside from that leaked email in which he railed about not getting a knighthood, I’ve always felt he should’ve gotten one and it was gross watching the Windsors make him jump through hoops. But jump through hoops he willingly did. It was uncomfortable seeing the conflict with his son play out in the tabs just before the announcement of his knighthood. He and Victoria never publicly objected to Brooklyn being called a hostage of his American wife. The Beckhams have had their fair share of tabloid scrutiny so maybe they didn’t want to engage. Or maybe they were silent for a reason that benefited them. idk. It still left a bad taste that this was the lead up to his knighthood. A father publicly estranged from his son is being knighted by a king publicly estranged from his son. Apparently that estrangement is bc of American women, or at least that’s what the tabs will report. Seems misogynistic to me but haven’t heard any of the fathers say anything about that type of reporting in the tabloids so hey.

I enjoyed and appreciated the Knighting of Sir Gary Oldham much more than this! But David clearly wanted this and worked for it.

  17. Anne Maria says:

They’ve done pretty well for a good but not great footballer and a very middling singer. Like the Kardashian/ Jenners, got to grudgingly admire the talent for that.

  18. Shoegirl77 says:

I don’t think she gets the ick at being referred to as Lady Victoria. Or the bounce in business that being Sir and Lady will bring. If I were her, I’d be getting the ick at my once gorgeous husband twerking for the Windsor clan for almost three decades for his honour and who’s currently looking like a washed up Vegas magician. But again, that’s me. A regular person who has some principles.

This appears in my feed right next to the gold terlit. I had to laugh!
