We haven’t checked in with Cher since January, and for that I deeply apologize. At the time she was still doing promotion for her autobiography, Cher: The Memoir, Part One, which came out in late November 2024. So does that mean she’s resurfacing now for the release of Part Two? Alas, no. When Cher filmed a segment with Gayle King for CBS Mornings this week, it was to tout two projects: the release of Part One in paperback, and the Cherlato truck rolling into NYC for a limited engagement. We first learned of Cherlato two years ago, the line of gelato flavors she’s partnered with New Zealand company Giapo to produce. According to her interview with Gayle, Cher says the gelato idea has been a passion project of hers for 10 years. And speaking of decades, Gayle tried to press Cher for philosophical life lessons on aging and experience and being true to yourself. Let’s just say, Cher was true to herself in how she responded.
Cher isn’t a fan of aging.
On Tuesday, Nov. 4, the “I Got You Babe” singer sat down for an interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings — and she was asked how she felt about getting older.
“I keep waiting for this grown up feeling to kick in and I don’t have any hangups about aging. Do you?” King, 70, asked Cher, 79.
“Yes, I hate it!” the “Believe” singer responded immediately. “I’m 10 years older than you babe!”
Then, King pointed out that they’re “wiser” and “more experienced.”
“Oh, I’m stupid,” Cher added. “I’m not wiser.”
Just before discussing her personal thoughts on aging, Cher explained why the age difference between herself and her 39-year-old boyfriend Alexander Edwards has never been an issue.
“He just says, ‘You know, you get older, but your spirit is younger,’” she said of Edwards.
The reason why they get on so well is because they “laugh all the time.”
“I think he’s beautiful. He’s really talented,” Cher added. “He’s one of the most talented persons I’ve ever met.”
When people make comments about their relationship, Cher doesn’t care.
“Whatever,” she told King. “They’re not living my life. Nobody knows what goes on between us, but we just have a blast.”
King ended the interview by referencing one of her famous quotes from a CBS interview in 1991.
“You were 45 and you said, ‘I was to be at 75, I want to be doing the same things I’m doing today and I don’t think I can do that unless I take care of my body,’” King recited to her, adding, “You’ve sort of lived up to what you wanted to do back at 45.”
Cher concluded, “I don’t know how to do anything else. What am I gonna do? I love what I do.”
I don’t know about you, but I feel rejuvenated from this dose of Cher! I love how Gayle was trying to tee her up for some sage advice, only to be thwarted by Cher’s totally different energy. Yet somehow, all of the answers Cher gave were wise (her assertion that she’s “not wiser,” notwithstanding). This is, after all, the woman who gave us the third-person self-reflective gem, “I used to not like Cher, but I’m much more used to her now.” Her comments have a way of sounding both profound and stoned. Then this: “They’re not living my life.” Excellent mantra for not letting other people’s opinions weigh you down. Elsewhere in the interview, Gayle asks Cher about always reinventing herself. Cher (kindly) rejected that idea, instead claiming that she was always herself/the same person, there were just ebbs of flows of when the world was interested in her. Although there’s a sound argument to be made that the world is ALWAYS INTERESTED in Cher, I kinda dig her perspective. She had another great quote (ok, they’re all great quotes!) about not being caught up in her fame, she’s just someone who always wants to be working, always doing and creating something. Which I guess is how we got Cherlato!
To wrap this up, I humbly offer my best attempt at tying all the themes together: ice cream + aging + Cher = “If I could churn back time!”
Cher’s career has spanned more than six decades — but she told @GayleKing that her time in the spotlight, from music to movies to fashion, hasn’t been about reinvention: “I've always been exactly who I am.”
Now, Cher is taking on a passion project, Cherlato, which she brought… pic.twitter.com/JmsLmJ5nNa

Madonna could REALLY learn a few lessons from Cher who is an amazing person. I recall Cher saying that Madonna came to a party that Sean Penn invited her to, and Madonna was horrible to everyone. I think they patched things up, but that my hae been strategic. I wont comment about who has had better work done. But I will say Cher looks GREAT.
I text with an 80 year old woman every day and she says “whatever” a lot, which I think is a great state of mind to be in most of the time. 💘
I was born in 1970. My 5 year old self was OBSESSED with Dolly and Cher. I truly thought they were the most glamorous things I had ever laid eyes on. My Cher Barbie was my most prized possession. What appealed to me – I know now – wasn’t their looks or even their “glamour,” it was their “hey this is me, like it or not, not worried about it” attitude and I credit them with unconsciously installing in that in my young brain (that and my hippie parents). I’ll always love Cher and Dolly for that.
I’ll always love Cher. She is so unapologetically herself, always. Fabulous woman.
See? There is a self awareness and sense of humour there that MUST come with age.
