If you’re anything like me, you’ve been taking a crash course in Venezuelan politics in recent days. America’s relationship with Venezuela has been a dumpster fire for more than two decades, but before now, the American government tended to try less visible methods of regime change and coups. Since 2013, Nicolas Maduro has been “president” of Venezuela. Up until Saturday, January 3, 2026. That was when Donald Trump decided to down a fistful of aspirin and ten Big Macs, and then he ordered strikes across Venezuela and the capture of Maduro and his wife. Apparently, Maduro is now in American custody.
President Donald Trump has launched military strikes in Venezuela in an effort to dismantle the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Having accused the Venezuelan president of drug-related crimes, Trump, 79, confirmed the order of “large-scale strikes” in the region and the capture of Maduro, 63, in a statement on Truth Social on Saturday, Jan. 3.
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country,” wrote Trump. “This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement.”
Trump ordered airstrikes on various sites in Venezuela early morning on Saturday, including the capital, Caracas, and on military bases, officials told CBS News and the BBC. This comes as the U.S. military presence has recently increased in the region, with several warships positioned in the Caribbean. Maduro is accused by Trump of drug trafficking and “forcing” migration to the US. The Venezuelan president is also accused of using oil money to fund his alleged drug-related crimes, all of which he has denied, per CBS News.
Maduro isn’t exactly “forcing” migration to the US – Venezuela has been largely a failed state for over a decade, and Venezuelans have fled their country in a steady stream for years, seeking work and stability. They’re not solely coming to the US, they’re also migrating to Mexico and they’re going to neighboring South American countries. So, America has “invaded” Venezuela and deposed their leader. What happens now? Well, Donald Trump has some spectacularly half-assed plans.
President Trump said on Saturday that the United States had captured the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, and was taking him to New York to face criminal charges, the stunning culmination of a monthslong campaign by his administration to oust the authoritarian leader. The United States would “run” the country until a proper transition of power could be arranged, the president said hours later, raising the prospect of an open-ended commitment.
Mr. Trump offered few details about how the United States would oversee Venezuela, saying only that an unspecified “group” would do so. It was not clear whether that would involve an occupying military force, although Mr. Trump said he was not afraid of “boots on the ground.”
Venezuela’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, had spoken to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and told him she was “essentially willing to do what we think is necessary,” Mr. Trump told reporters during a news conference at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Florida. But Ms. Rodríguez earlier denounced the U.S. operation on state television, calling it a “brutal attack.”
While Mr. Trump said little about how the United States would be “running” Venezuela, he insisted it “won’t cost us anything” because American oil companies would rebuild the energy infrastructure in Venezuela, which holds vast reserves of oil.
“We are going to run the country right,″ Mr. Trump said as he turned to oil. “It’s going to make a lot of money.” Past Venezuelan governments, he said, “stole our oil” — an apparent reference to the country’s nationalization of its oil industry.
“Don’t worry, we’re going to turn it into a corporate-run petrostate with zero oversight” is not a plan. Speaking of oversight… Trump did not get any kind of congressional authorization for this. In fact, many Democrats on the House and Senate Foreign Relations committees are saying that the Trump administration kept them completely in the dark about all of this. It’s kind of crazy for Trump’s position to be “we’re going to charge Maduro with crimes” whilst committing dozens of war crimes and American crimes.

Spot on, sadly. The US Congress is apparently waiting for the ghosts of Presidents past to rise up and do something, and – in my opinion – the responses of the other leaders of the Western world have been praised as diplomatic when, in reality, to a person like Trump, they are weak and passive. It doesn’t send a good message at all, versus that of Mexico’s president: “Sheinbaum’s immediate reaction to the Venezuelan attack was to issue a statement ‘condemning the military intervention in Venezuela’ and citing Article 2, paragraph 4 of the United Nations Charter that reads: ‘All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.’
Trump has broken international law and all governments in the Western hemisphere should be worried about this action. But the US has wanted regime change in Venezuela for over 20 years, I don’t expect Congress to do anything about this nor former Presidents to go against Trump for invading Venezuela.
He’s coming up on one year in office, but it feels like four years. One down. Three more to go. I try to put it out of my mind because I just can’t imagine three more years like this past year. I’m living in a dystopian nightmare.

I’ve never been a fan of America or the American dream. I think the US is overrated. Going after Venezuela is the starting point. As someone else already pointed out, they are low hanging fruit – their leadership is a problem from anyone’s perspective. But they are going to use that to start re-setting what is considered “normal” or on the edge of unacceptable. They already tried it with sending the National Guard out to cities they don’t like. This is just another plan in their playbook. They will continue to find “reasons” to invade/bomb/control citizens of any country until it’s the new normal. Trump hinted yesterday that Cuba is next. Probably Trump and his family are hoping to build resorts there, bringing back the 1950s, in addition to making de Santos and other Cuban-Americans happy. I was in Cuba last year and it’s definitely not doing well–but that’s partly because of our sanctions. Whatever the case, it’s NOT the US’ responsibility to do regime change wherever we feel like it and for whatever cr@ppy reasons we make up!

Was the former AT of the most populous border state and understand border politics better than nearly any other potential candidate. I could go on. She wasn’t a “lousy” candidate. It’s a mix of reactions. On the one hand, immediate protest marches down my street. On the other, the Venezuelan community is breathing a sigh of relief. Other countries have been prodding the US for years to do something about Maduro and the US kind of has a long history of deposing dictators, not mention defending oil interests, but people are shocked by the Trump’s Godzilla brand of “doing something,” which is basically stomping around in anger and smashing everything.
Thank you. I despise Trump. But I have family and friends in Venezuela who are, indeed, very relieved about this. They are hardworking middle-class people who have been living in fear for years. The folks I communicated with yesterday and today say there’s a slight bit of optimism for the future.
The US wants to “lead” the country until it has taken revenge for the nationalisation of the oil fields in the mid-1970s and 2007 by exploiting Venezuela financially and taking advantage of it at every opportunity. At that time, foreign oil companies had to sell shares in oil production. That’s what this is all about – oil and the billions that can still be made from it. In my opinion, this has nothing to do with a dictator, drugs, a form of government or the country. Venezuela has a Nobel Prize winner who can lead the country better than MÖGA.

After 7 years working for a multinational oil company and many years after that working in government intelligence, I can say it’s unlikely oil companies have signed on to this plan. The infrastructure in Venezuela is a toss-away, it will need to be rebuilt from scratch. No one is investing trillions in a foreign country that has previously expropriated those facilities without compensation. Also, Venezuela produces a heavy crude that requires specially built refineries. There are 2 outside of Venezuela and the internal ones are, like everything else there, falling to pieces; no one who lacks the proper refinery is going to purchase whatever is pulled out of the ground there. I stopped going to the country in 2009 because it was just too unsafe at that point, the place is falling apart and run by gangs. Just because they took Maduro doesn’t mean the Generals who are loyal to him, the Cuban operatives who are dependent on him, and the Venezuelan citizens who have some national pride, won’t fight an invasion. NO ONE with any sense or intelligence is getting heard by this President, he is setting a precedent of overarching unchecked Presidential power and we are becoming the Russia of the west. The stupendous short sightedness and stupidity of this action is remarkable.

I’ve concluded that’s what his interest is in Canada, Greenland and Ukraine, too. He wants the US to get part of those minerals–and he will personally get a percentage. He has been getting grift from everything he’s done.
Let’s see what the Venezuelan people do. It’s their country, so they’ll have to decide whether they will let Trump decide who runs the country or they get someone who will actually work for them. Sounds like the US, huh.

@Bisynaptic I agree that the petrodollar is a major part of whatever is going on here. What concerns me is: why is the Venezuelan VP now in Russia? Why was Putin notified two weeks ago when Congress wasn’t? Fiona Hill warned in 2019 Putin wanted Trump to take Venezuela so he could have Ukraine. I always try to follow the money and see what these monsters’ end game is. I still think Putin, the Felon, and Xi are trying to land grab here.
Why? Because Trump is a Russian asset.
Yes, of course he is Putin’s puppet. What I’m wondering is: Venezuela using the petrodollar again angers the BRICS countries, which include Russia and China. China seems angry, Russia tweeted about it, so why is Putin okay with this. I’m afraid of some horrible deal between them. His first impeachment was over aide to Ukraine. We all know the Felon can’t think of any of this on his own.

And yet Trump made it clear a few months ago that he was not going to renew the visas of people from Venezuela who came on refugee status because the country ( according to him) was completely safe to return to?
