Air Force One abruptly turned around over the Atlantic & returned to Andrews

Yesterday, Donald Trump did an impromptu press conference in the White House briefing room to mark his first year in office (in his second nonconsecutive term). The press conference was particularly unhinged, at least that’s what Beltway reporters said, because Beltway reporters wake up every morning with no memory of what Trump has been like for the past decade. “This has stopped being funny,” they cry. No, it was never funny, you’re just a terrible journalist. Trump’s 2026 has been so stupid, evil and disgusting that as soon as he waddled up to the podium, the stock market plunged. Of course, most of the Trump Economic Collapse is because of all of his warmongering, tariffs and insanity, which has caused a huge sell-off of American debt in Europe:

The “sell America” trade is in full swing Tuesday morning after President Donald Trump and European leaders escalated tensions over Greenland. U.S. bond prices tumbled, sending yields spiking. The U.S. Dollar Index, which weighs the greenback against a basket of six foreign currencies, fell nearly 1%. The euro jumped 0.6% against the dollar.

“This is ‘sell America’ again within a much broader global risk off,” Krishna Guha, head of global policy and central banking strategy at Evercore ISI, wrote in a note to clients.

Precious metals, gold and silver marched to fresh highs. Gold, which has long been viewed as a safe-haven investment during periods of geopolitical turmoil, was on track for its biggest one-day gain since 2020.

U.S. stocks tumbled as investors mitigated exposure to American assets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid more than 800 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each dropped more than 2%. The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX), known Wall Street’s “fear gauge,” spiked to a highs last seen in November.

The latest flare-up in so-called sell America positioning follows Trump’s threats to impose 10% tariffs on eight European countries as part of his push to take over Greenland. Representatives from the 27-nation European Union gathered for an emergency meeting in response to Trump’s tariff call, which he said would start Feb. 1 and then rise to 25% on June 1.

[From CNBC]

There’s a real danger that the dollar could collapse and there’s a real danger that no country, especially in Europe, will continue to buy American debt. That’s the cost of Trump’s Greenland hyperfixation, not just in the loss of historic NATO alliances, but to the American, European and global economies.

Soon after Trump sh-t the bed at the White House podium, he staggered onto Air Force One to fly to Davos. AF1 made it hundreds of miles over the Atlantic, then turned around and flew back to Andrews. The cover story is that AF1 had a “minor electrical issue.” I do not believe it. The White House traveling press corps didn’t even catch a glimpse of Trump as they switched planes either. Interesting.

May I be the first and not the last — I wager — to express the notion that if his plane should — just by chance — plunge into the Atlantic, it would be a tragedy for all souls on board. But I doubt he has one.

  2. ThatGirlThere says:

His diaper probably exploded causing a chemical reaction.

    • Miranda says:

Turning the plane around and going back to the airport because someone absolutely destroyed the bathroom and/or their pants IS a thing, you know…

  3. Eleonor says:

The Congress should stage an intervention on him plain and simple.
He needs medical attention, but they let him go nuts in front of cameras, and he is destroying the alliances of the US.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

I think he’s getting the best medical attention available. It’s the only thing keeping him alive. You and I, otoh, would be dead by now. He’s Frankenstein’s monster lurching around stinking up any room he’s in and confabulating endlessly. Seriously, we’d all be better off if the doctors let him go. 😕

  4. Beana says:

    Time to TACO, Trump?

  5. Cynthia Trochu says:

    This:

“Beltway reporters wake up every morning with no memory of what Trump has been like for the past decade. “This has stopped being funny,” they cry. No, it was never funny,”

    So true

  6. MsKrisTalk says:

They forgot his dementia medication and had to turn around to get it. Based on the fact that Abby is on, he probably was sundowning and was confused and aggressive which forced them to turnaround.

  7. Plums says:

he’s a chicken shit senile narcissistic psychopath. “mechanical issues” will be the excuse for throwing a tantrum about the idea of being in a room of intelligent people who all hate him and know him for what he is and might laugh at him and are done placating him.

  8. MichaelaCat says:

What Trump probably doesn’t realize is that the country that the USA has by far the biggest trade SURPLUS with, is also on that list of eight.

The Netherlands buys a lot more from the USA than the USA buys from the Netherlands.

So, if you even start trade fights with the country you actually have the biggest positive trade balance with, you must be dumber than dumb.

Well we knew this already about Trump.

Thanks for reporting on this. This is more clearly written and discussed than many news agencies do.

  9. PunkyMomma says:

A “minor electrical issue” on Air Force One. No way. Those planes undergo multiple safety checks. I’m onboard with Mango fearing having his orange a** handed to him on a tacky gold platter.

He’s a bully on the run.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

Also if it’s so minor, why the need to turn around? Surely, it could be dealt with in Switzerland.

      • BeanieBean says:

I remember a trip (on a much small plane) when the pilot turned us around & flew us all the way back after we had just gotten within site of our destination; he said there was a mechanical issue & that if something were to go wrong he’d prefer it happen at an airport with the means to take care of the emergency rather than the airport without the means.

  10. ArtHistorian says:

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems to me that the Trump administration insists on exercising 19th century politics in the 21st century.

  11. SIde Eye says:

Did he have another mini stroke? No sighting of him switching planes eh?

I know it’s very hard to kill viruses, but an almost 80 year old with this schedule, the flying, the press, etc. even for a malignant narcissist who loves attention – that’s got to be so exhausting. In my early 50s and I can’t travel like I used to. My ankles swell on long trips I get dehydrated etc. The time change messes with me too. It’s not as easy as it was a decade ago.

I honestly thought he’d stroke out right before Christmas. I’m betting 2026 is the year. It’s gotta be the year.

I used to want him to live to be charged with crimes, but now I know that will never happen. Imagine a world where we never have to see or hear form him again. I’m putting energy towards this. Maybe I’ll spend a few minutes a day visualizing the world without him in it. And also the cheering I am going to hear erupting in the streets here when we get confirmation.

    Team Stroke.

It’s 8:36 am EST in the US now. Trump is about to speak live at Davos according to CNN.

    • ArtHistorian says:

He is speaking now and it would be so cringe worthy of it wasn’t for the power he wields. Lots of bragging based in lies and decisions and then insult upon insult to Europe and especially Greenland and Denmark.

      • Becks1 says:

That’s it, right? he’s embarrassing and cringeworthy and just a stupid racist and now demented old man, but he wields so much power and influence. Our Congress won’t stand up to him for god knows what reason, I’m hoping other world leaders do. And I know that’s not fair to put the onus on other countries but as a blue voter in a blue state I don’t feel like I have any power to do anything here.

      • Liane says:

Replying to Becks1 who replied to you. Re: hoping other world leaders stand up. They’re trying:
“Canada Flexes on Global Stage With an Eye to Its Own Survival
Prime Minister Mark Carney got a standing ovation in Davos for starkly describing the end of Pax Americana. He is looking for new allies to help his country survive it.”
        https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/20/world/canada/carney-speech-davos-trump.html

      • Becks1 says:

@Liane yeah I read the transcript of his speech. but I want even more, which I know isn’t a fair expectation. For example i want the UK to refuse to send Charles for a state visit this spring.

    • Kitten says:

Every single world leader should have walked out when he was speaking. Every single one.

Alas, they’re probably all terrified of how he would react to that, given that he has the nuclear codes. And I honestly don’t blame them. He’s an absolute madman.

      • Anne Maria says:

I agree. The whole speech was a total embarrassment but the racism was off the charts. World leaders should not sit in silence listening to such offensive rubbish. Walk out.

  13. Giddy says:

It’s beyond a national embarrassment now and he is seriously dangerous. He is the embodiment of the enemy within and Putin must be quivering with joy. Every day I hope and pray for all of us to be rid of the orange monster.

    • lucy2 says:

He’s dangerous, unhinged, and for sure has some dementia or something, and just as dangerous are the people working behind the scenes, carrying out these policies. He’s a big, dumb figurehead, but also one with no intelligence or impulse control, whose rantings have a massive impact.
Every day I just wait for the good news he’s gone.

    • Gail says:

Dear Giddy and Lucy 2 ~ Is JDVance any better? He’s younger and it seems he’s even more eager to rip the USA apart and be a friend to Russia than to start repairing the damage already done. I’m not convinced him dying is going to be a good thing. I believe the only way to ensure this stops is the return to the rule of law. I don’t believe JDVance wants that.

  14. Siri says:

Ad much as I dislike him… I don’t want anything bad to happen to the innocent crew and press that are not employed by a far right organization or aren’t his enablers.

  15. Jessica says:

I had a glorious 45 mins this morning when I thought IT had finally happened. I was gearing up for a great, celebratory day, then saw he’d actually landed in Switzerland. F*cking cockroach. Why can’t we catch a damn break? Where’s the blood clot??????

    • QuiteContrary says:

Bluesky was amazing last night as speculation ran rampant for roughly one glorious hour.

    • SIde Eye says:

Keep visualizing and manifesting it! Don’t stop! The only thing is I want as unceremonious a death as is possible. Seriously a stroke, an aneurism, whatever. No one take this trashcan out and elevate him to a martyr. Don’t do it. Let nature take its course.

Nature? You asleep over there? You’re wanted at the White House! Enter though the front door the other side is all torn up…I keep picturing Norm MacDonald showing up as Death on Family Guy and walking through there touching everrrrrrybody that enabled this.

  16. NotSoSocialB says:

Too bad it didn’t plunge into the ocean.

    • Day Drinker says:

I was watching the news when I heard about this and that was my first thought as well NotSoSocialB. Then I realized too many innocent people were on that plane and felt guilty.
That useless piece of crap Melanoma should do us all a favor and put a pillow over his face on one of the rare occasions they’re in the same place. She’ll get her inheritance sooner and we won’t have to look at either of them ever again. Win win !

  17. Digital Unicorn says:

The EU leaders have already said they are not going to give in either politically, economically or military (a united European army is not what Dumpy wants). Putin would def not like that.

The EU owns about 2Trillion of US debts (bonds or something) and if we decided to off load it, the US economy would be fkd and the dollar would crash. Then there is also the ‘anti coersion’ clause in the EU charter where they could stop the US from trading with the bloc which would also cause the dollar to crash etc..

    • YankeeDoodles says:

According to Bloomberg, the EU’s holdings of US debt are more like $8 trillion. So… they have some leverage. Also Deutsche Bank issued a research analyst report speculating that European country national treasuries might move out of dollar bonds. It was such a taboo to state the obvious that the head of DB immediately phoned Bessent to reassure him it wasn’t his own view and Bessent — rather than take his cue to rein in the President — broadcast the reassurances that Sewing had given him. Which is looking desperate and silly. Methinks they do protest too much.
