Christina Aguilera reminds us that she’s still around

Christina Aguilera And Her Husband Shop In Beverly Hills
We haven’t heard much about Christina Aguilera in months, but she’s back with a new single and is trying to earn some headlines by granting quotable interviews. She’s not my favorite person, but ever since she got married and had an adorable kid she’s not as annoying as I once found her. Aguilera is much like Nicole Richie in that way. Plus she seems to have toned down the bright orange skin, although in most of the recent pictures I’ve seen of her she’s still wearing enough makeup to qualify for a RuPaul reality show.

Anyway Christina is letting us know that she hasn’t lost the thing she’s sold herself on for years, and that she’s still just as sexy as ever. She says that as a mom she’s even sexier because she saw the capabilities of her body. I can buy that she might feel that way, but I know being a mom had the opposite effect on me. I felt like a schlump for years, and I when I finally got back to my “pre-baby” body it wasn’t the same. I still feel attractive, but not like I did before I had a kid. I don’t know why I’m analyzing her throwaway comments. It’s not like she’s earnestly sharing something deep about herself.

Also Christina responded to criticism that she’s “copying” Lady Gaga by saying she just doesn’t pay that much mind. In January, 2009 Aguilera was accused of copying Gaga, to which she responded with a very bitchy comment claiming she didn’t know Gaga and wasn’t sure whether she was a man or a woman. Gaga graciously responded by saying the comparison was flattering and that she should thank Aguilera for giving her press. Now Aguilera is beyond all that, she says, but she’s not above talking about what a sex bomb she is. If you can’t sell yourself as quirky, you may as well go “back to basics”:

“I’m more confident and comfortable in my own skin. I think I’m even a more sexual Christina,” the singer, who wed husband Jordan Bratman four years ago, told the Q100 Bert Show in Atlanta Tuesday morning.

“That’s part of the change of having a child for me — seeing your body do these things you never thought possible,” adds Aguilera, who will release her album, Bionic, on June 8 and kick off a world tour to promote it. “When you have a baby, you go through a period where your body is not your own. It becomes for your child and that’s it. Once you bounce back from that and kind of get your body back… I feel better than ever. It’s a great feeling.”

Aguilera, 29, says she’s a “very sexual person” and she didn’t want to lose that after becoming a mother. Indeed, she and Bratman still have “Naked Sundays.”

“I think it’s important that he sees mommy not be ashamed for her sexuality,” she says. “I mean, he’s two. We’re art collectors, there are a lot of female nudes around the house. Max will be growing up in a house where it’s just the norm… It’s only weird when you shame it….”

Max may not be an only child forever.

When asked if she wants more children, Aguilera says, “I would love that one day, but not right now. Eventually, I would like to give Max a brother or a sister, but right now, Bionic is the baby.”

Aguilera also addressed online criticism that she’s copying Lady Gaga with her new album.

“It just comes with the territory. That, in particular, is not even worth wasting the breath to comment on,” she sniped. “I’ve been around for over a decade and I think my work speaks for myself.”

If she were younger, “I would have engaged, been a little upset,” she says. But now? “There’s a bigger picture out there. I’ve got my son, my family, my work.”

[From US Weekly]

Aguilera has talked about the “naked Sundays” thing for years. I agree that we shouldn’t be ashamed to be naked around our kids, but it sounds so deliberate and calculated the way she explains it. Oooh – they’re naked every Sunday! Just don’t be ashamed when you’re occasionally naked and act like it’s not a big deal and your kid won’t see it as one, either. Compare how Heidi Klum explains nudity as natural vs. Aguilera acting like it’s major but she does it anyway.

Here’s a link to Christina’s new single, “Not Myself Tonight,” off her new album Bionic, which is out in June. It does sound like Gaga, but a lot of music sounds like this lately.

Christina is and always will be. Britney was and never will be again.

  2. Anna says:

I don’t think Christina deserves to be compared to Nicole Richie, whether favourably or not. Christina is so much smarter and has more talent in her pinkie than Nicole will ever have in a lifetime.

Also, it’s great that Christina does not shame nudity or sexuality/sensuality in her household. I think that’s a really healthy attitude. And as for the comparison between the way Heidi Klum and Christina address the subject, I think you’re forgetting the cultural differences between the two. Heidi is German and nudity at home is kind of a non-issue in a lot of German households. Hence Heidi’s relaxed attitude. Christina is American and in the USA, nudity, even at home, is an issue, one way or another. So it *is* a major thing which she’s reflected upon and that she’s doing anyway nowadays. There is a BIG difference between both socialisations and both concepts and I’m sure Christina is helping to empower quite a lot of young US women out there.

Love Xtina, she has such a powerful voice…gaga wished she had the vocal abilities of Ms. Aguilera

  4. princess pea says:

I think she’s feeling insecure because she took time away from the spotlight for Max and now Gaga has pretty much replaced her in the Platinum Blonde Big-Voiced Songstress With Too Much Makeup Who Wants To Talk About How Sexy She Is All The Time category.

  5. moe says:

I love her new short hair and am glad she’s back. She’s one of the few singers today that has true talent and a great voice.

  6. GatsbyGal says:

Oh my god, her kid is SO CUTE. That haircut is adorable.

  7. Beth says:

@Anna: Talent between Christina and Nicole weren’t being compared. Just that after having a baby they became less annoying.

I didn’t think Christina was being bitchy when she made that Gaga comment. At the time she was very new and “Just Dance” was just hitting. I didn’t know who Gaga was either. I don’t like the new single. It’s kind of boring.

  8. Celebitchy says:

I hear you guys and will go easier on XTina next time. I do find her rather haughty, but she’s been harmless lately.

  9. Just a Poster says:

She has an amazing voice, but every time I see her, I want to tackle her and scrub her makeup off and tell her not to try so hard! She is beautiful and she should let that show.

  10. Pont Neuf says:

I have never really liked Christina as a person. She has a beautiful tone and a very agile voice, but I have always found it irritating how she believes her own hype and thinks of herself as some sort of revolutionary artist… Especially when she ALWAYS dodges the not necessarily high notes on her songs when performing live, and sings ordinary pop songs that aren’t even original.

Yes, I know that there are many people who are artificial and pretentious, and fake being nice in front of the media only to promote themselves but, is being a catty, conceited person something deserving of praise? Certainly not. Christina comes across as loving herself too much, and being incapable to recognize anybody else’s merits.

The new single is AWFUL, by the way. Lady Gaga doesn’t have the voice that Christina has, but her songs are a million times better. Sometimes, a better attitude and material can more than compensate for a slightly above mediocre voice. Conversely, being self-centered is always annoying.

Bleh….her husband is one special kind of fug

  12. l says:

I’ve never really thought one thing or another about her until YESTERDAY when I heard this interview while driving. I really liked her. She came across as smart, funny, down to earth AND talented. I am now a fan. I was impressed.

  13. bellaluna says:

    @ princess pea,

God love you, you’ve nailed it – spot on!

I don’t get the fuss over the whole “naked at home” thing. I was raised by a mother who was naked in front me without shame, and I’ve raised my children the same way. We didn’t have designated naked days, but neither did we lock doors or hide our nakedness to and from the bathroom for baths, etc… This whole thing is ridiculous. Who cares what you do at home with your body, as long as it’s not illegal or abusive and everybody at home is comfortable with it? Just shut up and keep doing what you’re doing. We don’t need the play-by-play.

(Sorry, I’m cranky. The baby had a hard night and I’ve been up since 12:30 this morning.)

  14. Jazz says:

    @Chelly – I’ve always thought that too!

  15. JC126 says:

I agree, the new song is terrible. I also agree that i want to scrub the makeup off her face.
I think a lot of CA’s songs are. I love her voice, and a few of her songs, but so many songs of hers are sung weirdly, with a strange style, and stupid lyrics.
Her home is decorated weirdly, it was in InStyle or some such the other month.

  16. Ursaline says:

I think the new hair is cute too, but what’s up with the curls? It makes her look like Pink. The straight version is much better.

  17. mel says:

Atleast she doesnt lip sync and her voice is authentic unlike Britney. She will probably be around alot longer than Lady GaGa.

  18. JM says:

She has actual talent. . . .doesn’t need to rely on the image.

If she could just tone down everything – the singing, the makeup, the hair – she would truly be awesome.

  19. CandyKay says:

I like the fact that Christina married a “real” guy, not a celebrity.

  20. Juice in LA says:

Anyone who thinks Christina- (an actual soon to be legendary songstress with real talent and chops) is copying CaCa (that derivative mop of mediocre talent) should be soundly thumped in the skull with the back of a shovel. That is all.

  21. Jeri says:

She really does have a beautiful voice. Back when it was hard to tell Britney/Christina/Jessica, et al apart I bought a Christmas CD by Christina because it was on sale and I still love it. Her voice is gonna be there forever – not a dime-a-dozen voice.

  22. RHONYC says:

    now just hear me out:

i dunno if it’s my experience as a nyc-chick…a scorpio…or someone who’s known many super-smart, sensual, sexy, independent chickfriends from ALL walks of industry throughout my near 40 yrs but…

none of those broads have ever said crap like:

“I’m more confident and comfortable in my own skin” or (i’m a) “very sexual person”

honey…if you gotta say it, i don’t believe you ARE it.

  23. hmm says:

I get so tired of Christina being constantly criticized for being an upfront woman who is unafraid of her sexuality or to speak the truth as she sees it. I appreciate that she’s never been mealy mouthed and she’s never pretended to be someone she’s not. I also have to laugh when people grudgingly admit that she can sing; as if it’s not really an important qualification for a singer.

  24. original kate says:

xtina is a talented woman, no doubt, but why does she always seem to be leaning on people in photos? is she night-blind or just drunk?

  25. Emily says:

I love Christina. She’s talented, and I admire all the work she does for charities and shelters for battered women and children. I remember when she first came out, in about one month she, Britney Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore all released their first singles. Even with her first, bubble-gum pop album, you could tell she was more talented than the other three put together. And I love artists who change their style, not stay with the same sound their entire career (AC/DC anyone?).

Sure, she’s a bitch sometime (what she said about Gaga was harsh, but hilarious in light of the later penis rumours), but I’m a bitch too, so I don’t mind.

  26. paranel says:

She is real bitch who is gone and forgotten. Next.

  27. Kelly says:

Christina is an amazing singer. She will outlast those talentless drones (Kesha, Britney, Rihanna, etc.), and will keep out-singing all those mediocre acts that are out there right now.

  28. Dhavy says:

One of the few women that actually has a voice. Just because GaGa, Britney, Rihanna or whoever make pop songs doesn’t mean that you can actually sing

  29. Laura says:

    @RHONYC–

I tend to agree with you for the most part. My sister, bless her heart, is a wonderful woman, but constantly needs to talk about how sexy and awesome and skinny and smart she is. I’ve always known she says these things because she’s hoping with constant repetition they’ll become true/she’ll start to believe it herself.
I think it is a bit different with celebrities though. They’re being asked to talk about these things, so it’s not quite the same as when normal chicks awkwardly announce them.

  30. NicoleAM says:

She has a good voice, but she comes across as very image oriented and egocentric. She seems to think of herself as some sort of artistic genius, comparable to Monet or Da Vinci. She takes that shit waay to seriously.
And she has to be the most consistently tacky dresser I’ve seen. Her clothes, hair and make-up always look awful.

  31. NicoleAM says:

And ladies, please, enough w/ the “Being a mom made me so much sexier/womanly etc etc.” It’s really sad if the only way you can feel complete as a person and as a woman is to give birth.

  32. Lucy says:

Christina is an amazing vocal talent, with a range inferior only to Mariah, but a way more powerful voice.
Gaga can sing, but vocally she’s so inferior it’s a joke to compare the two.
But exactly due to her voice’s wonderfulness, I blame Aguilera for coming back up with a copycat gaga style tune, that doesn’t flatter her class range at all and is way too generic.
Trying to jump Gaga’s sound bandwagon when you shouldn’t need it and then deny the comparison is a let down to my consideration of her as a fan.
