The Spencers’ closeness to Prince Harry is ‘likely to cause concern’ for the Windsors

On July 10, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles and Queen Camilla had met with Prince Harry, Meghan and their children at Highgrove that afternoon, a Friday. Given everything that happened in the days and weeks beforehand, I immediately pointed out that Charles had basically only agreed to see his grandchildren because if he didn’t, every story would have been about how the Sussexes were staying at Althorp and spending time with the Spencer family. The Highgrove summit changed the narrative, and royal reporters dutifully harped on and on about the Sussexes’ obvious desperation to return to the royal fold. Then, last Thursday, Meghan dropped an Instagram carousel of her family’s summer vacation, and it was obvious that several photos were taken at Althorp. Suddenly, the British press remembered that the Spencers exist and that the Sussexes spent something like four or five days at Althorp.

Prince Harry’s decision to stay at Princess Diana’s ancestral stately home in the UK indicates that there is ‘no love lost between the Windsors and Spencers’, according to a royal expert. After being unable to stay at Buckingham Palace, Meghan Markle revealed to her 4.7million Instagram followers that the Sussex family stayed as guests of Harry’s uncle, Earl Spencer, at the sprawling Althorp Estate during their UK visit.

In one of a series of images shared by the Duchess of Sussex, Lilibet, five, is seen walking through the Northamptonshire estate’s famous avenue of trees, close to the private island on a lake where Diana is buried. Ahead of her are Harry and Archie, seven, with all three carrying large bouquets of flowers to lay at Princess Diana’s grave and the nearby memorial.

The Sussexes trip was said to have given Harry and Meghan’s children an ‘opportunity to spend time at a place so closely tied to their late grandmother, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 when Harry was 12,’ People reported. Sources later confirmed to the Daily Mail that Meghan’s pictures were taken at Althorp.

Yet according to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, Harry’s decision to stay with his ‘ally’, Earl Spencer, serves as a powerfully poignant reminder of his frayed relationship with the Royal Family. He told The Daily Mail: ‘The Windsors and the Spencers have a superficially polite relationship. If you look deeper, there is clearly no love lost, memories of Diana will always influence relations between them. The relations between the Royal Family and the Spencers have been marked by politeness but not closeness. However, the Spencers definitely appear to be closer to Harry than William. The Sussexes have an ally in Britain which they can use as and when they choose to return. This almost certainly means that Harry can rely on a base at Althorp when he needs one and this would undoubtedly extend to Meghan and Archie and Lili.’

Mr Fitzwilliams claimed that Harry’s ‘closeness’ with the Spencers is ‘likely to cause concern for the Royal Family’. He added: ‘The Sussexes have been uncharacteristically silent since the meeting with King Charles and Queen Camilla. Harry is fully aware that whereas the King was undoubtedly pleased to see his grandchildren, Prince William ostentatiously played polo supported by Catherine on the day they met, which signalled strong disapproval of the King’s decision.’

During future visits, Mr Fitwilliams suspects that the Sussexes will likely opt to stay with the Spencers, rather than with the Royal Family. ‘Whatever reception they receive from the Royal Family, they can be assured of a warm welcome and moral support from the Spencer’s. The Spencers would undoubtedly welcome the opportunity to see them again and they would undoubtedly be able to stay with them if they so wished.’

[From The Daily Mail]

I have a for-real question: why are they acting like the Sussexes’ visit to Althorp is brand new information? We knew it at the time. We actually knew it before Harry landed in the UK – people had figured out that Althorp was closed to visitors that particular weekend, and it was widely reported. Photographers even got some shots of Harry exiting Althorp during his stay. My theory is that the palace successfully suppressed the Spencer-intensive storyline of the Sussexes’ visit. Like, the fact that the palace knew that the Sussexes were headed to Althorp was the impetus (more than anything else) for Charles arranging the Highgrove visit. The palace then dictated the narrative about Harry’s “misery” in California, he wants to come back and be a scapegoat, and on and on. All to distract from the Spencers welcoming Harry, Meghan and the children with open arms and zero leaks. All to distract from the king’s petty, juvenile and deadbeat behavior.

Anyway, it sounds like the palace and their royalists are extremely peeved that the Earl Spencer is so close to his ginger nephew. Oh well! I’ve theorized for years that Charles Spencer has visited Montecito several times post-pandemic. I also believe that Harry attended his uncle’s May wedding in Arizona too. It’s so “funny” that the British press refuses to speculate in any way which would lead people to believe that Prince Harry is still extremely close to the Spencers.

  1. Eurydice says:

Why are they acting as if “no love lost between the Windsors and the Spencers” is a new thing?

    • Jais says:

It’s funny bc they don’t usually like to remind people of that. Bc it just reminds that there’s no love lost due to the way Charles and Camilla treated Diana. And yet, here they are bringing it up. And all it does is remind people that Charles treated Diana terribly and now is doing the same with Harry. We all know that Harry gave too late notice to his father who couldn’t possibly be able to provide room at the inn, er castle, with hundreds of rooms and dozens of staff.

    • Beth says:

The Fail states that Lili was also carrying a large bouquet of flowers – she wasn’t. Can’t they get ANYTHING right?

  2. Tessa says:

The Spencer’s and rightfully so don’t like how the royals treated Diana.

  3. Joanne says:

Why does William playing polo, supported by Kate equal “strong disapproval” of Harry visiting Highgrove?

    • sunniside up says:

Logic is not required, it works as long as it pulls the wool over the eyes of their readers.

    • ecsmom says:

Especially because I thought he was informed that day it was happening. Surely polo matches are booked months in advance. This was just their busy work they do whenever Harry visits.

    • Ash says:

That part confused me because they weren’t told about the meeting and found out through the media like everyone else.

    • Jay says:

It doesn’t – if anything it signals that TOB was simply not informed about Harry’s impending visit to Highgrove, lest he leak the details out of spite!

But I also think it’s interesting that this article from the DM ascribes malice to the polo outing against BP from Will and Kate. They could have tried a more sympathetic reading by saying that Harry’s visit threatened to “overshadow” the polo game, or even showed that the Wales were “keeping calm and carrying on” etc but they deliberately chose to interpret the polo game as some kind of insult or jab at Charles. I think that’s the most revealing thing about who authorized this story.

    • lemon&lime says:

Was it even a charity match? Or just a regular league game?

    • IdlesAtCranky says:

Yeah, that bit cracked me up.

I signaled my disapproval VERY STRONGLY!!

Yes, of course, Sir. Forgive me, what exactly did you do again?

I whacked the ball VERY HARD with my Very Large Polo Stick! And then I thumped my pony with my heels authoritatively!

Ah, yes, of course, Sir. I’m sure that your message was clearly received.

Damn right, what?? Others may not get the point, but Daddy will know just what I meant! Now get me a double whiskey and pull up the footie forum on my laptop!

    • Agreatreckoning says:

Great question. WTF does that actually mean Dick FutzWilliams? Explain yourself. I know it’s hard after your foolery about the Oprah interview. Mumble, mumble, mumble. You remind me of someone else. PShaw!

  4. Dee(2) says:

I think them not following the obvious thread of their closeness to the Spencers’ is the same reason that they absolutely can’t have him and Meghan doing charity events in the UK. Harry has to be seen as isolated, he has to be seen as rejected by his family and by the British public at large. The RF are already unpopular, but to combine that unpopularity with the formerly most popular member, who picked up sticks, succeeding and being happy elsewhere, and still having the affection of the public? They can never let that be the widespread documented narrative.

They’ll never mention how warmly his Aunt’s greet him, or how often he seems to see his uncle, because they need him to be desperate. In the same way that they never acknowledge Doria’s existence when they’re lamenting poor Thomas Markle and those kids not having their grandparents. They don’t want people connecting the dots and saying – well, if they aren’t excluding this side of the family and actually seem to be pretty close, it doesn’t seem like their behavior is the problem.

  5. bisynaptic says:

“Mr Fitzwilliams claimed that Harry’s ‘closeness’ with the Spencers is ‘likely to cause concern for the Royal Family’.“
    — And why would that be?

    • BeanieBean says:

Right? Because in a normal family a man staying in touch with his maternal aunties & uncles & cousins is a good thing.

  6. Sure says:

I can’t decide whether H asked KFC permission for his family to visit or if he just left it to fate.

  7. JoanCallamezzo says:

It’s lovely how the Spencers have always supported Harry, in particular his uncle Charles. Wonderful that Althorp is a British base where the family has privacy and security. I think Prince George looks so much like Charles Spencer.

    • sunniside up says:

I have wondered where George got the looks from, Charles Spencer would explain it, Charlotte looks like her Mum but I don’t know which one Louis looks like either.

      • Tessa says:

I always thought Louis looks like uncle James Middleton

      • Siri says:

I think Charlotte is QEII’s doppelgänger.

      • MaisiesMom says:

I think Charlotte looks like William. Louis looks like a Middleton. George is a combo but I can see the argument for his resemblance to Charles Spencer.

      • Tessa says:

I think Charlotte looks like the middletons like her mother and aunt p i p p a. I never saw a resemblance to the queen or diana

      • Interested Gawker says:

I think all three children favour the Middletons but Charolette leans very ‘Spencer’ and Louis leans ‘Windsor’.

      • Kittenmom says:

Always thought charlotte mostly resembled William (jaw) but idk in the recent pix of James Middleton i thought i saw a strong resemblance to him.

George looks like a cross between Pa midds and Uncle charles Spencer. They all have kind of “googly” eyes. The lower half of his face is more attractive than either of theirs tho.

Lou didn’t inherit any of the strongest and most identifiable features of either family (eyes and teeth) so I can’t really pinpoint who he most closely resembles. Maybe Pa midds. I think he’s the most objectively attractive of the three kids, when he is happy. He was a gorgeous baby.

    • vs says:

George looks like the Middleton and there should really be nothing wrong with that…..that must be a good thing for him given how W turned out to look!

    • monlette says:

To me he looks the most like Diana’s father looked at his age.

  8. Tessa says:

I think george is more middleton in looks. But whether he looks like a Spencer or middleton it’s better imo than looking like a Windsor. Scooter favored the Windsor s as he aged which is not a good thing

  9. Chrissie T says:

Harry’s relationship with the Spencer’s is a problem for Charles as apart from highlighting his horrible treatment of his own son, it also reminds everyone of how badly he treated Diana and his failure to build bridges with the Spencers after Diana died. Charles is trying to do some damage control to his reputation now but the truth is his abusive behaviour to Diana and Harry and Meghan is what he will be remembered for by a lot of people in the UK and abroad.

    • maisie says:

At her funeral, Charles Spencer swore on his sister’s coffin that he would care for her children. He has kept that vow.

    • Mairzy Doats says:

It’s a problem for Charles because the Spencer family reputation as an aristocratic dynasty goes back centuries, and now is part of the monarchical bloodline. I’m guessing Charles knows that only bad would ensue from criticizing the Spencers for maintaining a relationship with Harry.

  10. Monika says:

Earl Charles Spencer made his feelings about the Windsors very clear during Princess Diana funeral..ñ

This reminds me so much about the 10 year IG anniversary in 2024. All the BM were talking about Harry being a very lonely figure at the anniversary service because the Windsors were too busy to attend garden parties. And then here they were, the Spencer family, showing up to support Harry. It was such a heartwarming scene how the Spencers embrassed Harry in the church. The Spencer are the ones who love Harry unconditionally.

And what did William do afterwards. William had to show that he is also close to the Spencer family and made his aunts
Lady Fellowes and Lady McCorquadale to show up at a couple of his events. I am wondering what William is doing this time.

    • Kasztanka says:

It is worth recalling that Charles organized this garden party at the last minute—on the very same day and at the very same time as the Invictus anniversary service, which was packed with veterans who had risked their lives for their country.
Charles chose sabotage over respect for the veterans and herded his entire family into those gardens—a scene they later proudly showcased in their video coverage. Unfortunately for them, the Spencers spoiled the plan by turning out in force at the church, making the royals look like even bigger assholes than they already are.
And William is just as “close” to the Spencers as he is to Jose Andres – he participated in the jury and posed for a photo and—before the ink was even dry on the newspaper announcing his “great friendship” with William—te fled to join the Sussexes.
William has always disregarded the Spencers. He didn’t invite them to his wedding or the christenings, yet after that service, he dragged them out to pose for a photo and claim they were close. It was disgusting. A Spencer will never be close to someone who calls Diana a paranoid. He can only count on their small gestures because he is Diana’s son; they do it for her sake, but he can only dream of actual closeness

    • lemon&lime says:

Lady Jane Fellows did attend William’s wedding.

It’s also worth remembering that she was married to the Queen’s assistant private secretary (#2 man in heirarchy) during the Diana years — the turmoil, the divorce and the aftermath of the divorce. He was awarded a title two years after Diana’s death.

She and Diana had a rocky relationship. In my opinion, her loyalities were divided, at best, between her husband and her sister.

So Lady Fellows is probably pretty loyal to the Crown — isn’t she the sister who first dated Charles? — , no matter what she thinks now of Charles personally, and did show up when asked.

      Not saying that she’s right…..

      • Blubb says:

If I remember it correctly Robert Fellowes was the Queens private secretary at Diana’s death, Nr. 1 not 2.
And no the one who dated chases was Sarah the other sister. Who was anorexic at the time they dated and Charles knew. And was reported as to be helpful.
The man so surprised the younger sister under so much more pressure developed another eating disorder. Where he wasn’t helpful at all.

      • Monika says:

A lot changed after Princess Diana’s death, her seperation and subsequent divorce from Charles, and how Princess Diana was treated by Charles, the royal family and the British media.

Earl Charles Spencer did not mince his words in his eulogy at Princess Diana’s funeral.

Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquadale seem to be very nice people and I am sure that they did and still do their best to support both William and Harry. What happened between the Spencers and the Windsors happened on a personal level. This does not turn the Spencers into anti monarchists. The Spencers are part of the system and monarchy.

What struck me in 2024 was that there were never reports of any member of the Spencer family attending any of William’s or Kate’s events before the IG anniversary service nor have I seen any reports of any Spencer attending William’s events since then. This does nit mean it does not happen however taking into account William’s need to let the world know that he has one up on Harry imo it is fair to assume that there would beriefings by KP if any Spencer would attend William’s events.

Imo there wss further deterioration in the relationship between the Spencer family and the Windsors especially William after Harry left.

  11. Penelope Cowell Doe says:

The derangers have been going spare over Meghan’s photos. All the old tropes about privacy, Charles Spencer forbidding photos, security etc. Lies and half-truths. They can’t bear the idea that the Sussexes have a close, normal family and a happy, successful life.

  12. Mightymolly says:

I just leaned so many things about Charles Spencer. First, if he married in AZ, why wouldn’t H & M and possibly the children attend? Practically a day trip from CA.

Second, Charles has 7 children from three wives and he just married a fourth time? Dude has some issues, doesn’t he? Growing up Spencer seems to have ingrained trauma.

Finally, he seems to have a preference for North American women and experiences. So yeah he and Harry are probably close.

    • Little Red says:

He wrote a well-reviewed memoir a few years ago about all the trauma.

    • Blithe says:

A Very Private School, Charles Spencer’s book about his early boarding school experiences, as well as his other books might provide additional background regarding some of his issues, trauma, and “growing up Spencer” for anyone interested.

    • MaisiesMom says:

I read Charles’ book, “A Very Private School,” about his childhood and his time at boarding school, which he attended from about age 8. Yes, it really did a number on him. And he didn’t even have it the worst of the boys who were there with him. He was a good athlete and didn’t struggle academically, so he wasn’t a particular target of the abusive teachers and staff there. But it was still hard.

Add to that the fact that his parents just left him there while they went about their lives. His mother showed up one vacation and announced she had re-married, to a man he didn’t know. He was shoved out of the nest as a young child, and didn’t even have his nest to return to on breaks from school. He didn’t even confront and talk about it until he was middle aged and had already been divorced at least once.

It’s a good book. He can write.

    • Mightymolly says:

Thanks all! Sounds like I should give this book a read. I know the stereotypes about aristos leaving their children to be raised by staff and boarding schools, but I’d imagined the heir was the one they coddled. Guess not.

    • Kasztanka says:

The fact that he has had multiple wives tells us nothing other than that he wants a family. Perhaps he is the type of person who prefers to part ways rather than remain stuck in a crumbling relationship. Maybe he doesn’t know how to fix things and prefers to leave, or perhaps a new relationship gives him a new lease on life; there is no way of knowing what he is like as a husband or what kind of wives he ended up with. One must remember that the brother of the legendary Princess Diana is a highly sought-after catch, and women (and men, too) are capable of playing games to achieve their goals. It also seems to me that—given his life experiences, such as rejection by his mother and the lack of a stable family home (and thus a sense of security and belonging)—he might struggle with trust and forgiveness. If one believes the media—which is something I find hard to do—his beautiful daughters did not invite him to their weddings. Perhaps he simply wasn’t there for other reasons, or perhaps they are angry about something; it strikes me that Charles holds grudges not because he is petty, but because he has been deeply hurt and wronged.
But what he certainly embodies is courage, backbone, a certain kind of pride, and honor. Yes, he is a man of honor—at least in the aspects we can observe. He is more of an aristocrat than that whole royal circus put together. Not to mention that the Spencer family is not only one of Britain’s oldest and most distinguished lineages—dating back to the 15th century, making the Windsors look like newcomers—but it is also a British family, not a German one. :)))
It’s funny that Google AI claims Charles supports William and has no contact with Harry because the latter betrayed the royal family. 🤣

      • Bqm says:

He treated his first wife awfully and cheated on her and at least his last wife. He has a ton of flaws. He’s at least semi estranged from his three eldest daughters. It doesn’t make him an awful person but he’s no white knight either. Being a good uncle doesn’t make you a good person in other aspects of your life. By his own admission too so we do know a lot. He had a very troubled childhood, at school and home, and it manifested itself in his marriages and relationships with his children. Hopefully this marriage, his first since undergoing a lot of therapy, will provide some stability and happiness.

      • Kasztanka says:

I didn’t know that about his past relationships, so I considered various possibilities with caution; however, I respect him for the qualities and attitude he has repeatedly demonstrated—traits that are truly refreshing compared to those royal propagandists, cowards, and manipulators. I don’t know what kind of person he is “in his entirety”—after all, we are all complex individuals—but what matters is that he sought treatment and doesn’t hide it, nor does he try to sugarcoat his image. I deeply appreciate his loyalty, courage, and integrity. Take his speech at Diana’s funeral, for instance, where he blamed both the paparazzi and the Royal Family for her death and mistreatment; it was blunt and powerful, yet dignified and classy. Harry has stayed over and visited Althorp many times, and Charles and his sisters have also been to Montecito on several occasions—certainly for Lili’s christening, but at other times too. Photos from with Charles recent wedding were taken in the Las Vegas area, close to where Harry lives. The HM [Harry and Meghan] were almost certainly at that wedding; if it was an intimate affair, the reception might even have been held at their villa.
I mention this because neither Charles nor the aunts have ever betrayed these relationships; they are loyal and discreet. And they don’t act this way out of fear of rejection by the Royal Family—they’ve shown many times that they aren’t afraid of the royals, and they all attended the church service for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games to support Harry and the veterans.
I am convinced that Diana’s sisters are warm, loving, and genuine aunts to Archie and Lili. Despite the stories spread by the press and the royals about their estrangement from the family and lack of contact, the children share truly close and healthy bonds with the Spencers—who are, after all, their immediate family too. I fear that WK’s children—despite being right there—can only dream of such bonds; I write this with sadness, because they won’t get them from their feuding parents, nor from the greedy, deceitful Middletons… nor while being kept hidden online.

    • bloemheks says:

Deeply flawed and unusually courageous. Sometimes they’re found them in the same individual.

  13. Brassy Rebel says:

The royalists are desperate for the narrative to be that Harry’s only lasting connection to the UK is the Left Behinds. Then they can lean into how much the royals control his movements when he’s in GB. It was never the case. The Spencers actually offer the love and support his father’s family never has. And the Windsors know that if the public understands this, it will make them look like the a-holes they are.

    • Lady Digby says:

@Brassy Rebel agreed 💯 Charles thought he could get away with shunning and isolating his ex wife but she had supportive family, friends and connections and was well loved by the public. How on earth does he think it looks like for him on any level as either father grandfather, head of CE and King to publicly shun, isolate, remove security and brief against his own son, daughter in law and two tots?? Okay maybe people are going to understand about not being friendly with a divorced wife but who divorce s their own son to the extent of declaring war on him and his wife via hostile acts and briefing. He puts him and them at risk knowing what befell Diana or is that really what Charles wants!?? The Spencers are FAMILY and they LOVE Harry and Meghan and the kids. That’s normal, warm and relatable to welcome extended family on a visit for the holidays and on other special occasions. Charles doesn’t appear to know what love for an offspring means. It is usually unconditional and not meagre, grudging, half hearted when you can fit them in and subject to endless terms and conditions like an NDA.

      • JudyJ says:

And see them for a whole hour! Whoopee!

I can’t imagine any real grandparents wanting to spend only a hour with grandkids he has not seen in four years. Luckily the Sussex kids have one “real” grandmother who spends serious time with them.

      • Kasztanka says:

        @Lady Digby
        👍💯👍

  14. Amy Bee says:

I don’t understand why the press is acting like this a new development. Harry was always close to the Spencers even when he was a working royal. There’s no doubt in my mind that the Palace was eager to avoid headlines about Harry and the family visiting the Spencers but not the King and so arranged the meeting with Charles. It’s interesting that the Palace was to hastily arrange the meeting with Harry, Meghan and the children but not able to arrange a room for Harry to stay in for one night at short notice.

  15. Magdalena says:

“Sources later confirmed to the Daily Mail that Meghan’s pictures were taken at Althorp” – Ha ha. In other words, “we spied on Sussex fan accounts and are now printing what they deduced to pretend that we’ve got sources of our own who would be privy to such information.” 😀

Even Richard Maureen Eden had to correct one of the derangers who was insisting that the photographs had NOT been taken at Althorp. They seem to be extremely exercised (livid) that the Sussexes stayed with their Spencer family. Is it because they can no longer keep insisting that the royals are the only family Harry has? The joke’s on them.

  16. Elizabeth says:

Harry’s closeness to the Spencers also reminds people of Earl Spencer’s eulogy at Diana’s funeral, in which he said her blood family would look after the boys. Diana always worried about William becoming more like a Windsor, and it’s clear that Harry takes more after his mother and the Spencers.

  17. Siri says:

The press having conniptions about the Sussex’s staying at Althorp is even more hilarious especially after seeing a portion of some YouTube video by one of H & M’s major haters interviewing someone who told him that the Sussex’s were planning on changing their name to Spencer. I thought the guy was gonna have a heart attack when he heard that. It was truly one of the biggest laughs I got yesterday. I can’t remember the interviewer’s name but he is the one that spits and foams at the mouth when he talks about H & M. He is too disgusting to watch any longer than a few seconds. He’s gross.

    • Harriet says:

It’s true, but they left off the reason.
Harry tried for over 6 months to get Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet’s British passports. He felt the reason for the endless delay was that Charles did not want his “darling” grandchildren to be officially titled as prince and princess. So , Harry went to his uncle and asked if they, as a family, could use the name Spencer to get the kids’ British passports. They wanted them to remain Montbatten-Windsors. It was not until they announced Princess Lilibet’s christening that the palace publicly changed their names, whereas they had changed all their titles within moments of the Queen’s death.

  18. Chaine says:

If the royals don’t want H&M to be so close to the Spencers, then they should have let them stay at one of the Royal residences, and given them security for free movement that they asked for!!!

  19. MaisiesMom says:

That’s his uncle. His mother’s brother. It was her childhood home, and he is welcome there as a member of the family. It’s not the least bit weird that he spent time there. It’s only weird that some people seem to have an issue with it.

    • Mightymolly says:

IKR? Imagine it’s Friday and your coworker is like “taking the kids to stay with my favorite uncle this weekend.” No one bats an eye. “Have a great weekend!”

It’s the most normal thing in the world. For plebs anyway.

      • MaisiesMom says:

Right. I mean some families are closer than others. But Charles Spencer has a huge estate with at least some staff and tons of extra space. People who run big country houses often have/had guests. They’re built for that. They’d have company come and stay for weeks. Of course his nephew and family could come!

      • BeanieBean says:

@MaisiesMom: palaces were built for that, too, yet Charles Windsor couldn’t seem to find the space.

  20. Shiela Kerr says:

The Windsor’s are making this an either or situation. Prince Harry is just trying to protect his family

  21. Over it says:

The Windsors can kick rock , they are not family to Harry , Meghan and their children, they are racist , evil pieces of s

    • GTWiecz says:

Absolutely. And taking Charlesmilla and Billy Bob aside, the fact that “aunt Anne” and “uncle Eddie” don’t also offer accommodation to their nephew, despite having palaces the size of a zip code shows how weak and scared of Billy they are.

Screw Anne and Edward (Andrew is persona non grata). They allow their brother to mistreat his own son and grandchildren. We don’t call them out enough.

  22. Magdalena says:

It’s sinister how ANGRY the royal reporters (and the Windsors) seem to be that Harry and his family have a safe haven in the UK. They actually expected the Spencers to shun Harry? The Spencers who had offered Meghan the famous Spencer tiara for her wedding? The tiara that only women in their family wear? It’s clear that as far as the Spencers are concerned, and regardless of how the leftover royals feel, Meghan IS family.

It’s clear that yanking Frogmore was to make them more exposed and isolated if they “dared” to visit the country of Harry’s birth. They make it clear with each passing day that they want the Sussexes to come to harm.

  23. Beverley says:

The Spencers welcoming the Sussexes with open arms reminds the public that Diana is the matriarch of that family and contrasts with the way the Windsors fixated on their “concerns” about unborn Archie’s skin color. Diana would have adored her Sussex grandchildren and would never have racist anxiety about how they would appear. Diana would never exhibit anxiety about being photographed with them, as KKKate clearly does.

I think that Skull & Bones fail to perceive the changing times. Like so many white folks, they’re so very comfortable being vile racists, they cannot see the writing on the wall. I predict that someday the Wales kids will have to distance themselves from the perception that their parents – especially their mother – are deeply racist. People rightly speculate that the apples don’t fall far from the tree. This will be problematic. It’ll be quite the challenge.

  24. Truthiness says:

The Sussexes relationship with the Spencers is a “cause for concern.” It’s not like Earl Spencer joined the IRA or ISIS for Pete’s sakes! It’s Diana’s brother and sisters.

The problem is that M&H aren’t defeated by all the shenanigans the royals cause. They’re supposed to be miserable and poor, not thriving and flipping their kids in the pool.

    • rlc says:

“The Sussexes relationship with the Spencers is a “cause for concern.” ” — yeah? well how about showing similar levels of ‘concern’ for andy’s relationship with epstein?

      • Kasztanka says:

        @rlc
I couldn’t care less about Andrew; I’m more interested in William’s relationship with Epstein. He accepted money from him on several occasions—but was it *only* money? Epstein stayed with the royals many times. It’ll probably turn out that Andrew is small fry compared to William.

  25. Carty says:

Did the palace really think Charles Spencer would be team rota and the firm? They destroyed his sister for no reason.

  26. Me at home says:

What’s this collective amnesia about how Charles pulled the Buckingham Palace invite at the last moment? The Sussexes had no choice but to stay at Althrop, although undoubtedly they wanted to spend at least some time with Earl Spencer and visit Diana’s grave. Yet here’s the Fail insisting that the Sussexes were merely “unable to stay at Buckingham Palace,” no reason given.

  27. Mads says:

Harry and Meghan having close ties to the Spencers blows up the preferred narrative that they’re ostracised in the UK, especially in the aristocratic circles.

William has been completely Windsorised, the estrangement from Harry has played wonderfully into the institution’s hands and hastened his total indoctrination and isolated him from less sycophantic friends and acquaintances.

    • Mayp says:

But there are still sycophantic Spencers. William can count Kitty, Amelia and Eliza as his allies. Not all of the Spencers showed up at the Invictus service.

      • BeanieBean says:

Ah, but those are the daughters of the earl, they don’t count in this ridiculous system. It’s the sons & the earl has two.

      • GTWiecz says:

Probably sided with poor mama in the divorce and suffered parental alienation. Happens a lot.

      • Mayp says:

Ladies Sarah and Jane: Hold our beers…

  28. Bqm says:

In the photo of Meghan with the dog some are speculating that the figures behind her are Charles and his new wife.

    • Kasztanka says:

There’s no point speculating—it’s a fact. Behind Meghan, Charles’s wife is lying on her stomach on a sunbed, and behind her—Charles himself.
Brighten the photo a bit and zoom in on the area above Meghan’s right shoulder and head. 😄

  29. Jferber says:

Screw them. He can do what he wants and what he wants is to support his sister’s son. Maybe he’s even lending security to the Sussexes whenever they’re in England. Who can forget his speech at her funeral? Diana the hunted, not the huntress. He knew what was up then and now. Bravo, Earl Charles Spencer!

  30. samihali says:

The Fitzwilliams line… ‘likely to cause concern for the Royal Family’ reads like a threat. If the RF must unalive or ruin the lives of everyone around them who has a mind of their own, then they are not fit for public service and the monarchy should be abolished.

  31. jferber says:

samihali, Abolished and arrested (the ones who committed crimes).

  32. Michelle M says:

I also think that the Sussexes’ closeness to the Spencers undermines the Left Behind’s ability to use Diana as a pawn. While she was alive she was seen as a threat to the institution, but in her death, the Firm makes use of her memory/widespread public adoration to help shore up their own popularity. If the Spencers support the Sussexes, and the Sussexes are bad, where does that leave Diana in all of this? It confuses the narrative of royal institution = good, anyone who has left/criticized the institution = bad, but somehow Diana is considered in her death to be a part of the royal institution even though in her final years she was very much left out to dry, a reality that Prince Harry will not let the public forget. Harry’s current connection to the Spencers (and his estrangement from the Windsors), underscores the very deep divide between these two sides of the family, and reminds the public that Harry and Diana’s charisma, work ethic, vulnerability and big hearts are not a part of the royal institution but rather a threat to it.

  33. kelleybelle says:

    Good.

  34. jferber says:

    Michelle M., Great response.

  35. QuiteContrary says:

If I were the Sussexes, I’d much rather stay with the Spencers. They seem much more fun and laid-back.

    So glad for Harry.
