This story of “Duchess Meghan is getting a job on Guy Ritchie’s show The Gentlemen” became stupidly complicated over the course of 24 hours. The origin of the rumor came from Tina Brown’s Substack, although she did not name-check Guy Ritchie or the show. She framed it as “this is why Meghan agreed to slum it in the Cotswolds.” I was just going to mention Brown’s piece in passing, but she’s honestly hidden some interesting information behind the “Meghan got a job” exclusive, so let’s go through it.
Meghan’s acting gig: So here’s the scoop about the Sussex thunderbolt: I can confirm Meghan has a job. The identity of the show is not yet clear, but it allows Harry, at last, to get her buy-in for his growing desire to get the hell out of paradise and go home to the world he understands.
The Sussex marriage: For the last few years, when he was not engaged as an enthusiastic parent to Archie and Lilibet, the once Tiggerish Harry has been moping around their nine-bedroom, 16-bathroom Montecito mansion, suing tabloids, and instructing staff not to share any negative press with Meghan. “But then,” an ex-staffer told me, “a friend or somebody in the kitchen will be like, ‘Oh ma’am, I’m so sorry today. That’s so mean,’ and she’s like, ‘What happened?’ And then it’s a f–king tornado… She can’t get out of bed.”
Meghan’s smart bet: It was always the best option for Meghan to return to acting, something she was genuinely good at, until she threw it in to marry Harry. In 2023, when replays of her old hit cable show Suits were inexplicably all the rage on Netflix, it would have been a legitimate pop-culture sensation and a major payday if she had let her agents pitch her for a reboot. But no. Duchesses don’t do ensembles. Meghan believed she could pull off some kind of manic multi-hyphenate mishmash of entertainment enterprises in between accompanying her husband on ersatz royal tours to promote random global uplift… Last month, Meghan appeared on Master Chef Australia as a surprise celebrity judge, and I am told it was a tonic to her mood. She finally realized how much easier – and more fun – it is to perform in a hit baked by someone else. She was back on the market, and it did not take long for Hollywood’s mega-deal machine, WME, the talent agency that still represents her, to get her a role.
Harry’s last run: A job for Meghan frees Harry to make a last run at staying royal before his father dies and his brother ices him out for good.
Camilla’s lack of forgiveness: As one of the least self-reflective people in the world, except about his own grievances, Harry is blessed with a naive obliviousness about the damage he caused his family with the Oprah interview, the Netflix documentary, and his scorching memoir Spare. It was a three-fer that I am told, Queen Camilla, any more than William, will never forgive him for. But she will tolerate however Charles chooses to proceed for the sake of her ailing husband’s peace of mind. In typical form, Harry only informed his father on Sunday, just three days before the news broke. The king and William, btw, are now gathered with other family members at Balmoral in Scotland. Hold the bagpipes.
How Prince William & Kate will handle it: With the Sussexes back in the country, William and Kate will up the diary dates, stay poker-faced, and ensure they never cross paths with the Sussexes except at family funerals. Privately, they will fume when eclipsed by each Harry and Meghan news update, such as the first big reveal of Archie and Lilibet photographed from the front. But tant pis. Now that William is Prince of Wales and has inherited the Duchy of Cornwall, with a fortune of approximately $30 million a year, he is so much more powerful than in 2020 when Harry left the monarchy behind. There is no chance Harry will regain his status as a working royal.
King Charles’ leverage: The king is leery of allowing Harry the latitude of indulgence that his mother bestowed on Prince Andrew, but the return of his prodigal son (and adorable grandchildren) could offer more than paternal consolations — a sliver of emotional leverage against William’s haughty flexes in interviews about “change [being] on my agenda” when he ultimately ascends the throne.
Where will the Sussexes live? After visiting the king at Highgrove in July, the Sussexes went on to spend a blissful summer weekend at Princess Diana’s ancestral home, Althorp House, with Harry’s Uncle Charles (soon to publish his own long-withheld memoir about his sister) and, I am told, his favorite aunts, Sarah and Jane, who have never lost their soft spot for Harry. Such a tender family reunion must have been a salve to the Sussexes’ battered pride. There may be eternal frost from the Windsor side, but there will always be the Spencers whose exalted lineage goes back over five hundred years. It is widely thought that Charles Spencer will offer up a house at Althorp, which sits on 13,000 acres in Northamptonshire. Didn’t Harry just say that Buckingham Palace wasn’t safe enough for his family to stay in? Yes, but perhaps he’s also begun to realize that any British private school is safer for his children than equivalent schools in the U.S. that have active-shooter drills in kindergarten. Lambrooke, in Berkshire, where the Wales children – George, Charlotte, and Louis – have been enrolled, is a discreet fortress for the children of the elite. Northamptonshire is a very grand and ducal county with a ton of excellent feeder schools to such academic toppers as Oundle.
“Perhaps he’s also begun to realize that any British private school is safer for his children than equivalent schools in the U.S. that have active-shooter drills in kindergarten…” The British urge to say snide BS about America’s gun problems while saying nothing about Britain’s racism problem is not a surprise, but it’s still pathetic. Brown’s dear friends in the British media literally just destroyed Jason Arday’s life until he killed himself, but hey.
The broad strokes of this are the same as ever and all of us knew that this would be the framing: Harry and Meghan are returning to the UK because they “failed” in America, Hollywood hates them, they’re broke, they’re looking for handouts, Meghan couldn’t even get out of bed because someone mocked her jam! Harry and Meghan gave Tina Brown and her ilk this opening, so it is what it is. Updated to add: I’m not saying “the Sussexes are asking for it,” I’m saying that the Sussexes decided to return to the UK with the full knowledge that the dregs of British journalism were going to write sh-t like this.

A few years ago she was acting like Meghan was a gold digger and said on a panel Meghan should marry Elon musk & that was when they were firmly settled in Montecito so what was the excuse then?
And I understand not liking or understanding the relocation to the uk (even though a mixed nationality couple spending time in each other countries isn’t crazy unusual) but idea that they are inviting or deserving press bullying as a result is unfair & belies the facts.
The press abuse never stopped when they moved to Montecito and in fact the uk press used us press hit pieces & shows like South Park to absolve themselves of the racism they had been rightly accused of and to claim that the USA was also turning against them. The press incl in the USA has been portraying their projects and deals negatively for years. Last year after outlets like people mag, Forbes etc said their Netflix deal was cancelled when it was extended as a first look deal the New York Times called it a downgraded deal. Language that everyone followed but notably didn’t use when the Obamas deal shifted to same first look- same deal 90% of people have with studios now.
Despite being in top ten in most global markets, Netflix saying that WLM was their most successful recent lifestyle/cooking show and now Emmy nominated deadline & others were discussing it’s Netflix chart position in a way that I’ve never seen for other shows let alone lifestyle shows to declare it had missed Netflix’ top 300 or whatever of shows so it was a failure and referred to the OTT nasty reviews incl in the us press. Pretty much same narratives with Meghan’s podcasts which were in top ten for their respective categories, won awards and archetypes was at the top of Spotify charts at one point, beating Joe rogan. But they will claim it was a failure.
So as I’ve been saying whilst the UK press is more obsessed & invasive then the us press, the us press also doesn’t mind trying to humble a biracial woman and has also been unfair and at times nasty to Meghan and she doesn’t deserve it whether living in uk or in USA.
The NYT had a recent article that could just as easily have been cut and pasted from any number of UK tabloid sources (and maybe it was), that’s how little actual analysis was involved. Needless to say, it was the same drumbeat list of all H&M’s current “failures”. So yeah, the US press isn’t doing much better.
With respect to the reasonable point of a mixed nationality couple spending time in each other’s country, there’s also the fact that couple’s children are (titled) grandchildren and great grandchildren of a king and queen, and in the line of succession. Archie and Lili may have little interest in and no agency about any of that at ages 7 and 5, but one day in the not so distant future, they will, and it will be up to them to make their own decisions about their relationship with their history. Despite criticisms of Harry’s emotional attachment to his home country, and his presumed attachment to the monarchy, it’s no mystery if H&M feel an obligation to give their children a sense of their heritage – and a valid sense outside of the biased lens of the rantings of the tabloid press – which will continue to be their heritage, even if they live their lives elsewhere. They’re old enough to start, and this is an opportunity, while Charles (not Will) is on the throne, the Spencer aunts and uncle are still relatively young (Diana’s sisters are around 70 while Charles is in his early 60’s), and Harry has the IG coming up.

Agreed that they’re damned by the UK press whatever they do or don’t do. I think Kaiser was referring specifically to the fact that making a sudden big move like this without putting out any kind of press statement, which invites speculation. I agree with Kaiser, but I also agree that they always make up wild and malicious stories anyway.
They always speculate about the Sussexes regardless of what they are doing or not doing. They also usually fall on their faces later when the Sussexes do make a move that contradicts whatever they say. The Sussexes don’t always put out a statement becasue some times their safety and other moves are being handled before a statement is necessary. Sometimes statements aren’t necessary at all. The media speculation isn’t impacting how the Sussexes feel or how they move, so for now there is no need for a statement. I mean, what exactly are people expecting them to say about a move to another country, when there are likely steps that have to be handled privately before a real announcement is made? Sometimes patience can be beneficial. The UK media constantly getting things wrong because they jump to speculate about everything regarding the Sussexes and always get egg on their faces.
I don’t think it was a sudden move at all; I think they just made no official announcements until it was a fait accompli. The fast move I ever made–from the ‘I’ve got to move’ thought to the move itself–took about 40 days and that was just to another state. And I’m single.

Re: the hysterical press framing of all this, the facts (and those suggested by Brown) seem to basically amount to a bi-national family opting to spend time in one spouse’s country closer to elderly relatives and family. The coverage has been so focused on the King, but it’s as likely that Harry & Meghan want to spend time among Diana’s sisters and families as well. And if the Althorp offer is real, that also seems like a significant factor. My sibling and their family spent 7 years in England when their children were similar in age, for similar reasons, before returning to the US due to work/career opportunities. It’s obviously a much bigger deal for Harry/Meghan to make this move, but only because the media makes it so.
It can’t be repeated enough that Harry and Meghan themselves have said nothing about all of this, so the unfair, racist, disgusting speculations about motives, needs, etc are simply another instance of the media holding up a mirror to itself.

Her comment about him moping around in his mansion in Montecito and all I think about whenever they try to imply that they are in the know about how the Sussexes are in their own space, is that none of these people who had full access to a working Harry with his leaking brother and SIL right next door, had any idea that Harry was depressed and moping around in his tiny cottage at KP. None of them knew that prior to him meeting Meghan, Harry was struggling mentally with depression and anxiety. His anxiety was impacting his speeches and he was avoiding going outside even to hangout with friends because of his anxiety from the constant media intrusion. He was right there and they knew nothing, so how do they suddenly know more about him in a well protected fortress where he has openly shown that he despises them and anyone who leaks and lies about him and his family?
I guess she missed those tweets & IG posts about him surfing. Or skiing. Or meetings with generals. Or going to Ukraine. Etc., etc., etc.
Perhaps the Sussexs are not speaking to the press because of either an agreement with Charles or because they just do not wish too. Perhaps they do not wish under any circumstance to be involved in any Royal duties or faux family outing and will keep their meetings with family Private. I can see gun violence in schools (and America generally) actually being a thing that they considered. If you’re American, it’s difficult to really understand how far removed your experiences with guns are from the rest of the world’s experiences. Mass shootings are commonplace in the US; they’re just not in other parts of the world.
I remember on my first visit to the US hearing a popping sound on the street in Seattle. My boyfriend and I were unfazed – we knew it was a car backfiring – the locals though ducked and even got down on the ground. It was disconcerting to realise that we were in a place where random gunfire was a real possibility. We’d lived in New Zealand, Australia, and Canada and never had that possibility before.
I won’t disagree with the overall issue of gun violence in America, but you’re mistaken if you think shootings are unknown elsewhere. There’s been more than 30 incidents in Canada since 2020, including one earlier this year involving a school in BC. Fewer overall in Australia, but last year included a mass shooting in Sydney, and the one at Bondi Beach. There have been a few shooting incidents in Auckland since 2020, but most well known is the 2019 mosque shooting in Christchurch. There’s been a handful of shooting incidents in the UK since 2020 – but it’s knife crime in the UK that’s become much more prevalent in recent years.
You can never say never – one of the US shooting incidents some time ago was at a department store close to where my sister lived in Omaha – but I doubt H&M are moving to the UK because of concern over gun violence, especially if this is a temporary relocation.
Yes, the rest of the world is not a violence-free utopia. But my point is simply that it’s so much worse in the US.
I live in New Zealand so I know about what happens here. The mosque shooting was absolutely horrific – it’s also the only mass shooting that’s happened here since the 90s. And the government’s response was to tighten gun laws. Australia did the same after the Port Arthur shooting there.
The US often has more than one mass shooting (4 or more deaths) a day. It’s orders of magnitude worse than everywhere else because guns are so much more accessible there.
Obviously, I don’t know what’s what for H & M, but I know that for myself, I wouldn’t want my children to go to school and have to deal with active shooter drills and the fears they would create. New Zealand schools have lockdown drills, fire drills, and natural disaster responses, but no explicit shooter drills. The natural disaster responses are the most likely to be needed because we have lots of earthquakes, and the odd flood.
Meghan can’t get out of bed – right, this is a woman with her own business empire who pulled off a full lifestyle Netflix series that’s been Emmy-nominated, produces shows, remains in talks for multiple projects, has two very active young children, pet dogs and a sprawling household with gardens, chickens and bees to run, stays incredibly fit, has a host of close friends in her community and around the world, is very active in engaging in events and travels with her husband, stays current with her social media, and curates her wardrobe beautifully. But apparently “can’t get out of bed” if someone brings her news of a negative fake tabloid trash story. Sure, f*ing Jan. 🙄 What wishful thinking, Tina Brown, wouldn’t you really love it if you could only reduce her to a sobbing mess?

As to the swipe at US schools? On average, I think school children in this country are just as well off as kids in the UK. Both countries have their issues. Archie and Lili were always going to be at schools that offer or at least can accommodate excellent security. She sent her own daughter to school here and continues to live here. So she should really stop being so snide.
The only advantage I can see with a British school is that Archie and Lili will be able to make some British connections that will help them assimilate into their lives their royal heritage.
I’m truly confused as to WHY H&M decided that going back into the racist snake pit called the UK would be any different now than it was when they left. Harry and Meghan haven’t said they think the press was going to be different. Meghan said earlier this year the trolling she gets will never change and she will have to live with that.
In 2019 the British press said if H&M stopped taking public funding they would stop getting scrutiny. Lo & behold it didn’t stop including when they moved to the states. They said harry & Meghan should go away and be quiet and they will stop getting criticism. When Meghan wasn’t seen publicly for a few months in 2023 I think, the press asked why she had vanished and did charts for when she was last spotted. And now she has an IG if she doesn’t post for a while that becomes a story.
Just last year Thomas markle was harassing Meghan for contact from the Philippines. Thomas is a lot like the press (he is their asset after all) no matter where he is based and no matter where Meghan is, he has shown he will harass her and try and disturb her peace. I think Meghan has resolved just to live her life to the fullest despite that.
Criticism of Meghan from day one has been:

Brown has had it in for Meghan since before the left in 2020. Can’t stand her, she always has this smirk on her face when talking about Meghan because she knows she’s talking shit and doing it to cause damage. Probably was the happiest day of her life when he did and she wants some more of that. Over it, Agree. I’m still so puzzled by this whole move back, for however long. I never thought the day would come. I was wrong. I would like to hear from Harry and Meghan directly, as they have done in the past to confirm what they’re doing and correct whatever B.S. was said about them. I don’t think they’ve said anything yet. Again, curious. They have always been their own advocates. Whatever the hell is going on in the UK, I wish the couple could have handled it another way–as many others suggested, stay in Portugal with Meghan and have the kids go to school there and Harry can fly back and forth to England on whatever business he has there. I just don’t understand this at all.

Ever since the news hit of HM moving back to the UK , that salty island has been just negative after negative. They have a much calmer and peaceful life in Ca. The U.S. has problems yes but that island for them is just extremely mental and toxic.
Something must be missing, although it seems idyllic to us, if they are both willing to relocate to the UK, where the gutter press and his only sibling will definitely not be supportive and welcoming.

It’s possible that Meghan and Harry may release pictures themselves. I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t imagine what the criminal UK press would do to get pictures of their children and have a plan in place to mitigate the danger for their children. Every opinion and advice offered by supporters and derringers alike is from a position of outsiders not privy to any actual information not provided directly by the Sussexes. It’s one thing to offer an opinion and discuss things they “should” or “could” do, but I think one should avoid sounding like someone who knows better and is asserting the definitive action. Everyone makes decisions, and decisions are not perfect, and all people have to deal with what happens because of said decision, unless you are a Windsor and are protected from the consequences of your decisions, no matter how wrong, how unproductive, and how damaging to everyone, including themselves. And that’s the ultimate, isn’t it? In the end, the royals won’t have anybody to save them from themselves. Harry and Meghan are in a position to deal with the reactions from their decisions. They are not all powerful, and I assume they simply do the best that they can for their family and act with rationality, integrity, and good intentions.

They didn’t stop at just stalking; they also created photo-manipulations to smear Meghan. Remember the market scene where Meghan was shopping with her dog? They photoshopped in a “No Dogs Allowed” sign and hurled abuse at her, asking who she thought she was to bring a dog in despite the ban. The problem is, there is NO such sign at that market. The journalists themselves deliberately added it to the photo. The Sussexes’ address is irrelevant; they will always be targeted and vilified, and this is something that needs to be addressed legally. After all—for God’s sake—it’s the 21st century; we supposedly have civilization and laws. How is it possible to so openly persecute and destroy two people and their children in the eyes of the world without facing any legal consequences?!
