Andrew Morton has decided to chime in on the royal story of the year. Morton was Princess Diana’s biographer, and he’s still raking in money because Diana selected him to tell her story. But these days, Morton mostly repeats whatever the palace tells him, having been co-opted many years ago. To be fair, Morton isn’t pretending to have any insider information about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return to Britain, nor does he claim to know how Prince William and Kate feel. This is just Morton’s commentary on the situation. An excerpt:
The decision [to return to Britain] has certainly changed the dynamic between Harry and Meghan. These days it is Harry who is whistling a merry tune. By returning to England he has his friends, family, charities and his military mates all to hand. Meghan, not so much. The one-time Deal or No Deal girl has been dealt a crummy hand. She loses her Montecito circle of girlfriends with whom she plays the Chinese game mahjong, her proximity to her mother, Doria, movers and shakers in Hollywood — and her chickens.
As for her brand, As Ever, the internet is awash with complaints about overpriced candles without wicks, runny jam, items that never arrived and faulty goods. At the very minimum, as a hands-on chief executive, it is going to be difficult for her to run a lifestyle brand from 6,000 miles away. As the late Queen told Harry and Meghan on several occasions before they left Britain six years ago: “Private work always ends badly.” It was her mantra — but one ignored by the California-bound couple who, as royal sources coyly suggested, were after earning “Kardashian amounts of cash”.
History has a habit of repeating itself. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were in effect exiled from Britain after the king abdicated the throne. Any attempt to return was met with a chilly silence or a suggestion that they head for the south of France. The new king didn’t want his brother setting up anything that could be construed as a rival court.
Ninety years later William faces a similar threat from his brother. Difficult, truculent but charismatic, Harry will soon find out if the British people welcome him back. Meghan, a few points above the disgraced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in the popularity stakes, will find it much harder. And she may decide it is not worth one of her wickless candles.
William is the key here. He is said to be furious at his father’s decision to meet Harry en famille. It is seen as an indulgence too far. Even though the Sussexes are not returning to royal duties nor living in royal accommodation, there is a case to be made for the couple — and their children — to renounce their titles. After all, they will be living what the late Queen denied them: a half-in, half-out operation in which they can pick and choose their charity engagements and be treated as ersatz royals — if not by the royal family, then by the public.
As for the Waleses, a persistent criticism has been the low number of royal engagements they undertake, especially compared with the older members of the royal family, such as the Princess Royal. Irritated as they both are by the arrival of the Sussexes, it is now apparent that they are going to have to up their game at least in the coming months if Harry and Meghan are not to grab all the headlines. It may be that the mere presence of Harry and Meghan will encourage the Waleses to support more vigorously the work of the King.
A delicious irony of this whole affair is that the British people now have two sets of royals for the price of one: the cut-price Aldi version versus the full-cream Waitrose royals. It’s something we could get used to.
“…The internet is awash with complaints about overpriced candles without wicks, runny jam, items that never arrived and faulty goods…” Two Derangers cut the wicks out their candles and claimed that the candles arrived that way. No one but Daily Mail columnists refer to As Ever jam as “runny” (it is not). I think “faulty goods” refers to those bookmarks, right? Derangers not being able to figure out how bookmarks worked = faulty goods.
But the key part is that poor William and Kate will have to work their lazy fingers to the nub to avoid having their thunder stolen. This is a repeat of 2017/2018 – Egg and Wig suddenly decide that they are busy and important to compete with Harry and Meghan. Then they were too lazy to keep it up, so they just started lying constantly about the Sussexes in an effort to put them in their place. Gee, I wonder if the exact same thing will happen this time? William and Kate will probably skip the part where they try and fail to keep with the Sussexes. They’ll go straight to the racism and smears, since those were so “effective” the last time.

So now “half-in, half-out” means they do their charities and are “treated as ersatz royals — if not by the royal family, then by the public”?
I mean, he’s tacitly admitting that the BRF doesn’t have a monopoly on all UK charity, and that’s a distinction that escapes many rota rats, so that’s OK. But the idea that “half in” means (checks notes) the public treats them as royalty–which they still are–is bonkers.
LOL at “It may be that the mere presence of Harry and Meghan will encourage the Waleses to support more vigorously the work of the King.”
Indeed. And they had permission from QEII to pursue their own charitable interests AND earn an income as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They agreed to not publicly use their legally retained HRHs, which they don’t. Half-in/half-out means something entirely different.
sure jane.
they will stay lazy.
Wank and Can’t certainly couldn’t work any less! Adding even one more event a month would look like a full schedule to them. If they are trying to bring back an air of mystery to being royal, its not working. Want is either”gardening” or having a tantrum. Can’t is trying on wigs and talking to a mirror about being the fairest of all. That’s how I see them, richy rich losers. I feel sorry for their children but that’s what therapy is for. Has anyone else noticed George’s resemblance to his Great Uncle?
One of the biggest questions for the RF and the Firm is now in 2026 are Will and/or Kate actually capable of showing up more for royal engagements? Kaiser notes they did briefly try in 2017/8 but that was long ago and things have changed changed on the health front for Kate. We are constantly being told she is on a gradual return to work. Will doesn’t look solid these days and all the rage filled briefing and odd claims to having grown up in pubs is all concerning. How fit and healthy are they for full-time work? If Kate is content to be a traditional wife and mother with lingering health issues why not be honest about a reduced public role for her? Kate is William ‘s consort. It is down to him as heir to work full-time as a fully fit 44 year old.
George will go to boarding school, Charlotte too perhaps and maybe Louis. Traditional wives and mothers can work when the kids are in school. The kids are in school during the day. Kate was able to go on vacations and over a year ago was going on the advanced slopes skiing. And the “hill climb”. So she has the energy for that. Kate never really worked hard since she married in. She never had full time work during the years she waited for the ring.
Why do they act like every QE decision remains in stone, for all of eternity? Yet, she only wanted Camilla to be referred as Queen Consort after her passing, and Charles went against her wishes, and changed it. I personally think it was Charles & Will who told her not to accept the half-in arrangement. And they certainly could change that again if they wanted to, even if it went against “her wishes”. Anyway, I don’t think anyone on either side wants that arrangement.
And it was TQ who ‘gifted’ Harry & Meghan Frogmore Cottage but Charles who kicked them out. What she wanted know longer matters.
I am at the point to say to Meghan: Let the monarchy fail.
I am sick of the disgusting abuse in the way they speak about Meghan.
Deal or No Deal was a job, selling jam and candles is a job. The unmitigated arrogance of these people.
Put some respect in your mouth when talking about Meghan. Otherwise, Meghan, hear me loud and clear: let them fail. Let the monarchy fail.
Funny how everyone seems to notice that the only time these two actually show up for events they call work is when the Sussex’s are in the country or highly visible… I think they will be doing more photo shoots and staggered releases not actual work or events after the first few months of the Sussex’s returning and it certainly won’t interfere with their holiday schedule.
Only the derangers/bots say there is “something wrong” with As Ever products.
Maybe my memory is faulty but I do remember that the queen statement said that Harry and Meghan had her blessings in pursuing a living and doing their charity work. These people keep trying to rewrite history. And if the Queen really die say that working for a living to pay your bills never works, well then that’s from a life of privilege of someone who never had to work to provide for her family. What an entitled, assholey thing to say . As for Andy Morty, these people have got a o get over the fact that Harry fell in love with and married a black woman and had children with her . They have got to accept that he made that choice with his whole chest
“As the late Queen told Harry and Meghan … “Private work always ends badly.””
Is that why the royals decided to become billionaires on taxpayer hand-outs?
“Prince William & Kate will work harder now that the Sussexes are returning”
Is that a promise or a threat?
🤔
Aldi is a fine supermarket. I think the Wails are well below that standard.
True. At Aldi I get what I need at an affordable excellent price, and one worker is capable of minding the entire store. The Waleses are like Tesla: extremely expensive but doesn’t work as promised.
The Wales being not-so-subtly pushed into working harder is one of the few things I can truly enjoy about this whole saga. I almost feel sorry for their staff having to try and cold call all of the Wales’ charities that they’ve barely spoken to for years to drum up as many events as they can in 2026.
“Hello? Yes, I’m calling from the office of the Prince and Princess of Wales. No, it’s William and Kate now. Yes, it’s nice to hear from you as well…yes, um…ahem, it seems that your organization sent us an invitation to a gala happening next week that we had declined, but actually as it turns out, the… uh, previous engagement fell through, so now we’re going now! Good news, right?”
British journalists sure do hate people who work in normal jobs to support themselves. I guess none of them work in real jobs.
“Private work always ends badly.”
Does Morton think this makes the late queen look good??? It actually makes her look like the terrible snob she was, looking down on people who work for a living.
And the As Ever products are fantastic.
Gah … Morton’s sentiments encapsulate everything I loathe about English classism and snobbery.
I think next month is going to be a very busy month for William and Kate. Then they will realise that Harry (and Meghan) will not be doing weekly engagements and they will go back to their low numbers.
Not enough laughing emojis. Extra smelling salts being delivered to Forest Lodge as we speak.
“…the internet is awash with complaints about overpriced candles without wicks, runny jam, items that never arrived and faulty goods.
Morton’s text is grounds for an immediate lawsuit. It is a crude and deceitful smear campaign aimed at discrediting the brand.
I would never let that scumbag get away with it.
Interesting. I’ve never had a problem ordering from As Ever. I’ve enjoyed everything that I’ve gotten from them, and I’m looking forward to what may be a peach jam/spread coming soon.
And the As Ever packaging is beautiful
I’d change that title to “work” rather than “work harder.” There is no tangible evidence that they work at all or just go on fun outings, vacations, sports events, pubs, show the children’s faces and what they are keen for now and call it a day. Let’s be clear: Kate and Will are non-working royals. Even when, if, William becomes king (G-d forbid), he will still be a non-working royal. And the country and press will just eat it with no protests whatsoever. Cut the lazy bastards off already!!!!! They are sucking up far more resources than they’ve ever contributed. The royal welfare couple.
“Private work always ends badly.” Puh-leeze. What would TQ know about private work? She’s never held a job in her life. Her brief time in the ambulance corps or whatever it was called was closer to William’s ‘rescue pilot’ job than a real job.
I only got as far as “Prince William & Kate will work harder now” when I started laughing so hard I was wishing I owned an asthma inhaler.
Also Morton can go kick rocks with Penny J, whom he’s always paling around with.
