Several years ago, Matthew McConaughey’s mom, Kay “MaMac” McConaughey, drunkenly revealed that she’d hooked up with Woody Harrelson’s hit-man father during her second divorce from the late Jim McConaughey. According to Kay, their liaison was around the time of Matthew’s conception.
Matthew and Woody turned their messy situation into a meta-comedy series. Brothers premieres on Apple TV+ on September 23. It’s a wild story about two friends who met while playing brothers on EdTV and have since become lifelong bros. Matthew and Woody play themselves, Holland Taylor plays MaMac, and Natalie Martinez plays Valentina, who is based on Camila Alves. For years, people have been asking MM and Woody if they plan on getting a DNA test. Woody has always been all for it, but Matthew has always been hesitant. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Matthew explained why he refuses to get one. From the NYT:
“I’d love it if he was my brother, honestly,” the 65-year-old Harrelson said, with that same easy gaptoothed grin that charmed audiences when he played a bartender in “Cheers.”
McConaughey pushed back. “I’m not doing a DNA test,” the 56-year-old said firmly.
Harrelson pressed on: “I would do it because I know it’s true.”
McConaughey disagreed, arguing that his mother, a flamboyant Steel Magnolia named Kay McConaughey and known as MaMac, was just stirring things up.
McConaughey is hesitant to definitively answer the question because he feels that if they actually were brothers, it’s like saying, “Oh, your dad’s not your dad that you thought your dad was for 50 years.” He turned to Harrelson and said: “For you, it’s easy. You gain a brother.”
Harrelson shot back, “You gain a father, just different from what you had in mind.”
I asked McConaughey if his reluctance stems from the fact that Harrelson’s father was a convicted contract killer — charming and ice-cold — who died in prison.
McConaughey, who played a hit man in the movie “Killer Joe” shook his head.
“No, I don’t really care about that,” he said.
Harrelson dryly interjected, “He’s thinking to himself, ‘Everybody has to make a living.’”
The NYT piece has more details about Kay’s revelation, including that she spilled the beans in front of both of their kids. Woody also retells an older MaMac story about how Big Jim didn’t want to take her to the hospital when Matthew was born because he didn’t think he was his kid. When asked for a comment, she said, “I cannot tell him anything more than what I already have told him. I had a little incident with [Woody’s] father. They seem like brothers, yes, they do.”
I get Matthew’s reasoning for not wanting to take a DNA test and believe him when he says it’s about his own identity. It’s a lot to process. He could also be protecting his own children from potentially being known as a hitman’s grandchildren. That said, he’s put up with Kay’s antics for his entire life, so I also suspect he truly believes she’s full of sh-t with this claim. He and Woody also know that the “maybe brothers” storyline is now a huge part of their appeal. The lure even got them a TV series. The best way to ruin a good mystery is by giving it an unsatisfying reveal.

MaMac is a piece of work. We all know how she’s treated Camila over the years.
How?
I recently finally saw them in “True Detectives”…then proceeded to watch it 3xs in a row…SOLELY due to their AMAZING chemistry ✨️…their freak matches & balances each other & most related siblings would WISH for that type of symbiotic connection…they’re lucky to have been able to FIND that 🎁
TD 1 is absolutely some of the best tv in the history of tv. They are both so good in it and their chemistry absolutely elevates both of their performances.
ITA that TD1 is possibly the greatest show in tv history. It’s profoundly disturbing and somehow horribly prescient about predators infiltrating every aspect of our culture, but the real story is their relationship and it’s an unparalleled analysis of male friendship.
That’s the show I wish I could go back in time and watch it all over again for the first time. They were never able to catch that magic again in subsequent seasons.
Apparently the dates line up and MM’s dad wasn’t around during his conception which is why he didn’t think he was the father. But maybe MM is hesitant because there could also be a third option where his Dad isn’t his bio dad, but Woody’s dad isn’t either and that would open up a completely different story. In the end it’s his right to not want a DNA test whatever the reason(s).
There’s the maury show if we ever get there. Im sure he’d come back for a special celebrity edition
They’re really milking this story out as long as they can, right?
Families are messy; don’t get me started on mine. But Kay sounds like a real piece of work.
They’re both insufferable accepting anything ass know it alls.
Matthew got hair plugs was receding in a time to kill….my guess they are brothers even tho Ma is a colorful lady, she was colorful enough to have a good time w Mr. H
One of his kids could decide to find out. One of the big issues with DNA testing. You are making the decision for your relatives, too.
People on both sides of my family have done the ancestry sites, so I figure I know all I need to know. (No serial killers discovered, so there’s that). Now of course I could take the test and find out they aren’t my family after all, but if you saw photos of me and both parents you’d be like no test necessary. That’s living DNA proof.
MaMac is a narcissist. So I’d be very careful with anything she says.
Also, I get where MM is coming from. This could open up all kinds of cans of worms. They’re friends and practically brothers as is. This is one time I think it’s okay to let sleeping dogs lie.
For anyone who wants to see MaMac in action, just watch the movie Bernie. She is one of the “regular” Texans in it and from what I’ve heard she basically just plays herself. It’s a good excuse to watch Bernie again. It’s a favorite movie of mine. MM and Jack Black are both incredible in it, and MaMac gets her star turn.
I think they already did the test and aren’t related and are just keeping that secret and riding the mystery money bus.
Yep, I think so too.
100%. It’s fine. It’s just part of their very public bromance. Everyone takes the tests these days. A childhood friend who was adopted as an infant just discovered she has living siblings after being told her whole life she had no blood relatives. (I think the adoption agency spun that web not her adoptive parents). There are no secrets any more.
Could it be “you’re not the father…and you’re not the father either” ?
I would really recommend Matthew’s memoir (Greenlights). I hadn’t watched True Detective yet when I read it (his book made me seek it out) and I still thought of him as the vapid pretty stoner boy from romantic comedies I didn’t really like. (As noted by several other commentators the first season of True Detective is stunning and changes your opinion of him as an actor). His mother is a holy terror… Kind of Blanche Devereaux, a Tennessee Williams Southern belle caricature and Thomas Markle/Jennifer Aniston’s Mom rolled into one…. She should be taken with a grain of salt. I don’t blame him for not opening that can of worms with a DNA test, but the show looks really good.
