Anne Hathaway won’t discuss her ‘Les Mis’ weight loss: ‘I don’t answer that question’

I like Anne Hathaway. A bold pronouncement, I know. I used to not “get” Anne, but a few years ago, I found myself starting to come around. She’s one of the most talented actresses out there, I think she’s beautiful (I know some of you don’t agree) and I think she’s a lot smarter than the average starlet/actress. That being said, Annie is still flawed, like everyone. Anne sometimes gets on my last nerve, and I think she has the tendency to be too-cute-by-half, and her default personality can at times come off as “pretentious nerd”. Anne has a new interview with Access Hollywood, and she was asked about her crazy weight loss for Les Miserables. Instead of talking about it – which is, after all, the point, right? – Anne actually sounded like she was concern-trolling all of us in the cheap seats.

Anne Hathaway admitted she was on a strict regimen to get in shape to play Selina Kyle – aka Catwoman — in “The Dark Knight Rises,” but she’s pledged to keep mum on how she got un-fit – and super skinny – to play doomed prostitute Fantine in “Les Miserables.”

“I don’t answer that question. Not to like get super serious about it, but just there’s so many people out there that will try something unhealthy to lose weight,” Anne explained, when Access Hollywood’s Michelle Beadle brought up how much she hates the “weight” question with regards to this film.

“I don’t want to contribute to that. So actually I don’t answer the question,” the actress added.

But Anne was absolutely open about her first post-film meal.

“I had spelt pasta with garlic oil and like a lot of beautiful fresh tomatoes and then I had a twice baked potatoes, with basil sun dried tomatoes [and] oil. It was so good,” she raved.

Anne also revealed that Russell Crowe, who plays Javert in the film, the long arm of the law, was actually a total sweetie to the actress and her post-film first meal.

“Russell Crowe — don’t let this tough guy exterior fool you — he’s a big marshmallow-hearted man,” she said. “He scoured London and found me a vegan chocolate cake and brought me this huge vegan chocolate cake when I was done because he asked me, ‘Are you going to have anything sweet?’ I’m like, ‘No, no, I don’t. We were shooting way out in the middle of nowhere. I’m like, ‘I can’t be bothered to go to London to get that!’ And he brought it for me… to make sure that I was going to be able to celebrate with something sweet.”

[From Access Hollywood]

On face value, I understand what she’s saying, and I agree. Why contribute to that pro-ana BS? Why talk in neurotic detail about how you shaved off those pounds? And I also think that once she starts talking about it, everyone will ask her about it and it will be a repeat of Natalie Portman’s Black Swan Oscar campaign where everyone was obsessed with her weight and Mila Kunis’s weight.

But there are several problems. One, Anne has ALREADY talked about it – notably to Vogue (where she explained that she lived on oatmeal paste for weeks). So, it’s like closing the barn door after the horses have bolted. Two, Anne’s physical “transformation” is a huge part of her Oscar campaign. You know, the whole reason we’re here, the whole reason Anne is talking about Les Mis, her whole Oscar strategy of talking about how difficult it was to lose the weight and chop off her hair (all for the role of a lifetime, she’ll tell the Academy) in between dropping in little personal details about her wedding and how she can’t wait to have babies.

Anyway, I think it’s far more likely that Anne doesn’t want to “give away” such important and Oscar-worthy campaigning to an outlet like Access Hollywood. She’ll save it for Vanity Fair or The Hollywood Reporter or The Los Angeles Times. She’ll go into more details about her diet with those outlets. Trust me.

    Oh really?
So what exactly have you been doing for the past 2 months then, Anne?
I’m not really fussed whether she blabs or doesn’t, but at least be consistant.

    • Kimbob says:

Hahaha….good one! She comes across as an elitist snoot to me. Opening up to Vogue, but not Access Hollywood….ugh….whatever. A prima donna snooty twit. Don’t like those types.

    • poppy says:

part of that is because her rep, stephen huvane, is an elitist control freak that definitely believes his stars should save their best for vanity fair, vogue etc. the lesser agencies are allowed SCRAPS ONLY. his stars are too good for anything less than vanity fair! compare his other clients (jennifer anniston, goop)… same thing.
expect anne to turn into a more accomplished brunette goop- do as she says, not as she does/foot firmly planted in mouth, head all the way up the ass.
i do think she is entirely more talented than goop. i do think stephen huvane manages to make his clients completely polarizing- love em or hate em, mostly hate ’em. its all good!

  2. neelyo says:

Ugh, the Oscar Primaries have barely begun and I’m already so sick of her.

  3. Quixotic1205 says:

I am sick of Oscars “campaigning”. It should be an award based on merit but too often the academy gives it to the most well liked actor/actress. Another reason why I think Hollywood is one giant high school-type popularity contest .

Not that it’s on the same caliber, but can you imagine if Nobel Prize winners had to do the same?!

  4. carrie says:

    She looks again super skinny
Thé trouble is that to lose weight for a movie and to campaign for an oscar is became super gimmick:look Matthew McConaughey’s campaign. All his interviews are about his lose of weight for his next movie
Anne Hathaway Will win an Oscar not because she lost weight but she’s great as Fantine(she’s born to act Fantine)and she stole thé movie

    • Cazzie says:

It’s dangerous and gimmicky to lose that much weight – I would prefer if they made severe weight loss for a role an *exclusion* from consideration for awards.

They shouldn’t be giving out awards to people for hurting themselves! Acting is a profession, not a diet. Give me a break.

      • Shaishai says:

But that would be unfair to someone like Tom Hanks who lost loads of weight for Philadelphia and Cast Away AND did an amazing job of acting. Those transformations were essential to the characters.

The problem is now, instead of simply doing what’s necessary for the role and shutting up about it, it’s being seen as a convenient shortcut to getting a nomination to harp on about how much they suffered for their role.

It’s the more extreme version of “the pretty actress must make herself ugly to be taken seriously” syndrome.

Even the opposite, where they gain weight gets attention. I can’t recall a single interview with Renee Zellwegger about Bridget Jones that didn’t blather on about how she had to put weight on like it was some miraculous feat. Same for the 15 pounds Fergie put on for Nine.

  5. I.want.shoes says:

Viewed from the front, that black dress looks like it was worn with a backpack. Hate the thin/chunky strap mix.

  6. GoodCapon says:

Genuine question: aside from her acting ability, are they going to judge her singing in Les Mis to decide whether she wins the Oscar or not?

The reason I’m asking is because I’ve always felt that part of the reason Portman got the nod for Black Swan was not just because of her acting (IMO her acting in BS left a lot to be desired) because they made everyone believe that she danced almost, if not all, those ballet stuff even though she had a double.

    • Christina says:

      Definitely.

Portman was as mediocre as she always is in ‘Black Swan’. A lot of pouting and sulking – and apart from a toe-curlingly awful gratuitous lesbo scene, that was basically it. There’s no doubt that the award was given because people were fooled into thinking she’d done some of the dancing herself.

But ‘Best Actress’ awards tend to be given for gimmicky things. A lot of mediocre actresses have won them – Portman, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta Jones, the list goes on.

      • andy says:

Don’t forget Ali MacGraw received a Best Actress nomination for her performance in Love Story. lol

      • SaftD says:

        Jolie was great in Girl

      • pf says:

If you’re going to bring up mediocre actresses who have won Oscars, don’t forget Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Helent Hunt and Hillary Swank (who did not deserve to win TWICE!).

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Im not a big HSwank fan, but ‘Million Dollar Baby’ was incredible and I think she rightfully deserved that one!

  7. LeslieM says:

She probably stopped talking about it because people who’ve had experience with eating disorders let her know how dangerous that diet really was. Some people who’ve heard about the oatmeal paste diet will try it. She probably received a lot of criticism when she talked about it.

    • Skipper says:

I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt an say that, maybe she saw the reaction when she talked about it initially and decided to stop.

    • JM says:

That’s my impression, too. I thought her answer was reasonable.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Agree with all above. I actually respect her for answering that way, regardless if it was a case of her seeing the public’s reaction and then changing how she answers the question or not.

    • Belle says:

Yep… was wondering the same thing, if she got some backlash when she spoke about it.

  8. megs says:

Campaigning for an Oscar? Common people! Everyone knows Lindsay Lohan is winning every single Oscar…duh.

Oh Annie, so pretentious. How does it all fit in such a small body..

  9. Gine says:

I think she’s probably just sick of talking about it because it seems like that’s all any interviewers have asked her for the past few months, and she didn’t want to come right out and say “I’ve had enough of this stupid question already.”

I like her as a person but find her to be too much onscreen. She totally reminds me of the well-meaning but try-hard theater kids I went to college with.

    • jaye says:

I actually like AH, but I have to agree with you. She reminds me of the serious theater kids I went to school with. Extra long scarf wrapped around the neck 100x, alway drinking tea with honey. Try hard-y but harmless and well meaning.

  10. Vivian says:

I saw the Les Mis trailer; was impressed of her singing but it’s because I wasn’t expecting it but an Oscar with the competition she’s facing…I dunno. Base on performance alone, I am not sold.

    • holly hobby says:

I’m not impressed with Annie’s singing. It sounds so milquetoast and weak. She does not have the pipes to carry that song. Lea Solonga and the other lady who played Fantine in the 10th anniversary concert sung it better.

Also her hair looks lopsided. So much for keeping the do. Looks like she’s growing it out and now it looks awkward.

  11. stellalovejoydiver says:

In general I think it would be better if the actors not only talked about how they lost their weight, but also about the health risks of that kind of drastic weight loss and how it changes their mindset.

The sudden display of concern seems to be completly fake, she had no problem at all discussing her weight loss methods endlessly before. Maybe her publicist told her to do something different than NatPort 2 years ago.
Also LOL that she even thinks she might win, it will go to Amy Adams this year, (or maybe Sally Field) she is not only more talented than Anne but I have the impression also more liked in Hwood, Anne just seems annoying to be around, the Oscars are also a popularity contest, I doubt that many will vote for her. Meryl Streep worked with both of them, do you think she would for Anne over Amy, hell no.

Can´t wait to her see her face when she loses, after last years Michelle Williams almost bursting out in tears(and according to a BI crying in the bathroom “It´s not fair” haha, bitch was delusional to think she could win over Meryl fucking Streep), I am going to have a lot Schadenfreude.

    • poppy says:

agree, if she talks about it talk about ALL of it.
agree re: schadenfruede. perhaps the driving force of all (my) celebrity curiosity.

    • Ann says:

It all fairness I think Williams is better than Hathaway and even Adams… While Hathaway is a tinsy bit better than Portman, who has the acting range of Channing Tatum in all fairness. Hathaway is decent but nothing mind-blowing… As over Adams, I find her acting bland even though she’s overhyped in the inner circles – hence the three nominations. But neither of them are Oscar material. I don’t particularly dislike Amy but she’s placid, can’t feel anything for her characters and it’s definitely not cuz of her subtle acting.
HBC should get nominated but at this point Hathaway’s set in stone for the win.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

I agree on Williams being the best out of the three of them, but she just annoys the shit out of me with her wholesome, goody two shoes revirginization shtick and how she brought up Heath during campaigning and made it seem, like they had been still together when he passed, even though according to Terry Gilliam they weren´t on good terms after their split a couple of months before, and that she didn´t date anyone since then and was still heartbroken, maybe she was but I found the whole public campaigning really cringeworhy. And I used to have a crush on Jason Segel, and now she is dating him, arggh.

Besides that the overall consensus was that Meryl Streep would win, it was a sure thing, so I laughed so hard at her delusions that she will get it, and lost, haha.

      • Ann says:

        @ stellalovejoydiver
Totally, Streep was a given… and before Williams, if anyone could’ve won against Streep, it would’ve been Viola. I actually would’ve liked Viola to win than Olivia Spencer… it was like some POC had to win the Oscar last year and in no way, could the Academy overlook Merryl again… therefore they celebrated Spencer – which is a weak character actress. Spencer winning was like Jonah Hill’s nomination. Annoying.

As far as Williams is concerned, I was never into her public persona, she just comes off to me. But she has some acting range, that’s all I’m saying.
Adams’s skills are overrated like Ellen Page’s but in a different age category. At least Ellen disappeared unlike Hathaway who sells herself too much. We get you’re an overachiever but you’re no Romola Garai as far as acting skills are implied.
Now Romola’s a subtle actress unlike Adams.

      • La Calabaza says:

We need more Romanolas and less Annes. She’s so full of herself.

      • Elle says:

We’ll have to agree to disagree on Adams. I think she’s brilliant on film. She blew me away in Enchanted. She was a vibrate screen gem in Miss Pettigrew, she was trashy and raw in The Fighter. She was chilling in The Master.

Adams deserves every bit of praise she gets and she doesnt come off desperate for attention like some of the others do.

  12. Mew says:

There’s already news on how she said she ate nothing but 2 thin layers of oatmeal paste a day for long period of time “to look near death” so I guess it’s a bit late to start going on the “I won’t tell” way… good for her, but she should’ve chosen that path from the beginning. Obviously then her “hard work and sacrifices” wouldn’t have been so well noted…..

In any way, she’s probably already on the wannarexics inspiration list, just like Jared Leto, together with so many others. It’s hypocrisy to do things and then say “don’t do what I did”. It just doesn’t work that way.

    • Ann says:

The roles are Oscar bait… they couldn’t care less about how their emaciation is considered a form of artwork… and please she’s got the nomination in the back, wait till January and she’ll start describing her arduous process of becoming Fantine.

    • Kim says:

I have never about oatmeal paste til today. I’ll try it I have a HS reunion this month. Thanks

  13. DeltaJuliet says:

I’m going to play nice today and say I really like her haircut now. If I was thinner I would totally cut my hair like that. Adorable.

  14. stephka says:

She looks like Liza Minelli in these pictures.

    • KellyinSeattle says:

      That’s what I was thinking.
In the first pic, her neck looks unusually long. I used to like her but she’s just getting on my nerves now. She’s beginning to be intolerable and smug. I wish I could go back to liking her again, but Anne, so you don’t answer questions, but how about this one: Why can’t you be quiet for just a few minutes?

  15. serena says:

For some reasons she’s starting to piss me off. Anyway I always like a good story about marshmallow Russel and Hugh. LOL they seemed like lovable men on set.

  16. BooBooLaRue says:

Like the hair. Don’t love the girl. She is a snot somehow. Wish she would eat a cheeseburger.

  17. mercy says:

She has underarm hair showing in the second to last photo … still a beautiful woman, but underarm hair with a sleeveless dress?

  18. Cam S says:

Well I agree with her not wanting to talk about it. I remember back in the day when Tracy Gold did a movie about anorexia and she divulged what she did to lose weight (I think she had been anorexic in real life also), & girls would study the movie for tips on anorexia.

  19. bns says:

Wasn’t she just on the cover of Allure talking about her weight loss yesterday? I hope Sally Field or Amy Adams wins Best Supporting Actress instead.

  20. Velouria says:

She looks like an expert anorexic; it doesn’t seem like a big secret to me.

    • Alexandra Bananarama says:

She has spoken before on her diet and eating habits with this movie and her daily life. She doesn’t indulge.

She’s has and will talk about it again and again. At least JL AND MM haven’t talked about diet and have only coyly eluded to how they lost the weight.

AH is already thinspiration and that’s not her fault, but she’ll fuel the fire if she talks more about it in detail.

    • Lisa says:

lol, what the hell is an expert anorexic. Seriously now?

  21. JM says:

C’mon, she’s pretty harmless, no? We’re not subjected to stories of her clubhopping while on drugs, sleeping around, etc. I find her interview reasonable. This was a huge role for her to get, and she jumped at the chance, haircut and weight loss and all. I’m GLAD she’s decided to stop publicizing how to get scary skinny in two weeks’ time.

  22. FirstTimer says:

I’m really excited to watch this movie. Anne’s really campaigning hard. I guess that’s fine. I see her as I see Taylor Swift’s antics.

  23. Sel says:

I will preface this by saying I like Anne. She spoke about the extremes she went through prior to this interview and I heard from people who commented that her comments on her diet were dangerous because people might use her as their thinspiration. She knew it was not a healthy diet but her character isn’t healthy. I’m sure she heard from people who felt that her detailing it might encourage someone to try it. If that’s the reason she’s choosing not to discuss it, good for her. While the horses may already be out of the barn, maybe she’s preventing a few more horses from leaving. Just because you made a mistake once does not mean you must make it again.

Now, if she chooses to discuss the diet with another outlet, then I lose some respect for her.

  24. Lisa says:

Maybe she realized that talking about it in detail earlier wasn’t a good idea, hence the bolting of the gate? Better late than never.

PS: People with actual eating disorders don’t usually pick up tips from celebrities, just saying.

  25. Eléonore says:

She is so ugly on those pictures! The combination of her hair and weird face is just…ugly. Seriously, there are no words! Luckily for her she is a good actress…and her career is not completely based on her looks!

  26. j.eyre says:

I’m sorry – did you say something? I can’t hear you over the power of a Jackman photo…

    • Susan says:

      I giggled.

I think this will be a good film, but I like Hathaway better when she was playing roles like Ella Enchanted. I just can’t take her seriously.

  27. Susan says:

To the point about campaigning for an Oscar:

Is it just me or are the stages an actress must traverse to be considered a prime candidate of such an award simply include:

    1. cutting off one’s hair
    2. starve oneself for an extended period
    3. and maybe show your boobs/have a lesbian “sex” scene, all for a “role of a lifetime”?

Is that really all it takes? Can we call this the “Portman Effect”?

  28. stinky says:

    predictably, she’s a vegan.

  29. claire says:

I really don’t find it to be an interesting topic, so I couldn’t care less if she talks about it or not.

  30. Alana Fajina says:

Don’t take yourself so Serious Anne. No one else does. Over. Her.

  31. sennet says:

I can’t think of another case where I’ve gone from thinking well of an actor to disliking him/her intensely, as I have with Anne Hathaway. That said, I’ve decided to say something nice – her hair looks great in this current style.

    • LeslieM says:

I feel the same way. I lved her in the Princess Diaries movies, but them she grew-up and felt she had to prove herself as a seriou actress. The she talked about how she was a serious actress, and talked about it again and again. Now I can’t stand to read or hear anything she says.

  32. natalina says:

I think she is very pretty…but great actress–NOPE

  33. Christa says:

She was already twig thin before Les Mis! What, is she scared to spill her diet secrets of how she drastically went from weighing 90 lbs to weighing 80 lbs? She doesn’t look much different from these pics to how she looks in the Les Mis trailer. She has always been incredibly thin.
