Lupita Nyong’o in pink Chanel at a pre-BAFTA party: sophisticated or cloying?

wenn21090812

Here are some photos from last night’s pre-BAFTA party in London, held at Asprey. Several BAFTA and Oscar-nominated people were there, although the guest list did seem slightly random. Still, it must have been a fun party and had I been invited, I would have gone just to see what the gift bag included. Hopefully a piece of pretty jewelry!

As with so many awards season events this year, Lupita Nyong’o stole the show in this Barbie-pink Chanel suit. On any lady… I would have used the words “cloying” and “Pepto-Bismol”. But on Lupita… she looks like a new-generation Lady Who Lunches. What’s consistently blown me away about Lupita is just how occasion-appropriate she’s been EVERYWHERE. This Chanel is simply the right choice for a pre-BAFTA party at a fancy jewelry store. I hope someone gave her a diamond last night.

Amy Adams looked kind of milquetoast at the event, but I wouldn’t mind owning that coat.

wenn21090501

Daniel Bruhl can go from “kind of pasty and not hot” to “OMG HOT” with just some stubble. It’s the weirdest thing.

Ruth Wilson in… whatever this is. Can this be the end of peplums now? I feel like The Grand Peplum Experiment of 2011-12 is now over. The designers that succumbed to the trend should just offer apologies and everyone can move on. God, WHY? Why put a fabric tire around your waist?

wenn21090537

Helen Mirren is the most rock n’ roll person ever, of all time. LOOK AT HER HAIR. This is how ladies should do short haircuts. Love her. PS… do you think her coat is adorned with enough jewels?!

Love Lupita, love Hellen. They should do a movie together.

  2. Cecilia says:

Helen always looks divine…Lupita, not so much in this outfit. Cloying is correct.

    • Liv says:

I don’t like her pink outfit either, ugh!

Daniel Brühls girlfriend looks always so over-the-top-enthusiastic, what’s wrong with her? I also wonder what these girlfriends who accompany their men all around the world do for a living. Nothing wrong with that, but still a little weird.

      • Took time off of work? It’s slightly easier when you get a gf that works in the business in ANY way, I think. But I can’t imagine going up to my boss and asking for time off, so I can accompany my boyfriend to some parties. But, the parties are rather close together in one time, so maybe you save up vacation time?

Or you, as the celeb just date models.

I think that it I dated someone famous–well, we all know I’m going to be Liam Neeson’s second wife, as soon as he rescues me from snowy hellscape–I would say the hell away from red carpets. I’d be the one with my eyes closed because of the flashes (like my gravatar, haha)–you should’ve seen the guy who had to take my picture for a passport. He eventually had to turn off the lights and open the shades, to get me in enough light, because I kept blinking at the flash.

      • Valois says:

        She studies psychology.

      • Liv says:

I understand when Luciana Damon accompanys her husband, they are married and as far as I know she doesn’t have a job. But being constantly around on award partys and press tours when you’re not even married? To each their own, but she probably skipped her own career then. I just find it so odd when men or women who accompany their partner to premieres or stuff pretend like it’s also about them. I mean if you’re not part of the film, get your photo taken and then step aside. Otherwise it comes across as pretty pathetic – at least in my eyes.

      • Hannah says:

I think she looks perfectly normal. Merely smiling for the cameras, I can’t see anything wrong with that.

    • John Wayne Lives says:

Yeah, I dunno. I mean she doesn’t look bad, but she doesn’t really pull this off.. it’s just.. not.. can’t quite put my finger on it, but I don’t like the dress on her at all. Beautiful girl, beautiful dress, not good together.

  3. lisa2 says:

I like the idea of Lupita’s dress. I don’t like the bottom. I have an aversion to baby doll dresses. And this looks like a baby doll dress on the bottom. If it was more fitted and longer on the bottom I would have loved it.

I don’t like all the jewels on Helen’s trench.

    • Yeah, the trench looks cheap with those jewels….color’s nice, but it looks like my little sister designed that coat, as she likes ‘busy’ outfits.

    • zinjojo says:

Lisa2, I think you’ve hit it — I kept looking at the dress on Lupita and sort of like it, but the bottom doesn’t work for me. If it were a straight, fitted sheath dress, it would be lovely, but that baby doll bottom makes it a bit too sweet.

Agree about Helen’s trench too, the jewels look rather tacky. But she looks amazing! Look at that jawline — I wonder what she does to keep it so tight? I do face yoga, wonder if Helen does too 🙂

      • Sullivan says:

Helen does look good, doesn’t she? Sure, the trench would look better if it wasn’t bedazzled, but she gets a pass.

I think Amy looks lovely. I’ll bet this outfit looked better in person.

This isn’t one of Lupita’s better looks, but it’s fine. I think she spoiled us with some stellar looks, so anything less is a bit of a letdown. Looking forward to her Oscar gown. I bet she brings it.

    • littlestar says:

Agree! The little flare on the bottom of the dress just takes away from the overall effect of the outfit. If it was fitted, it would be much more flattering. I think Lupita looks better in structured, sexy, slightly avant garde clothes, not frilly pretty lady who lunches clothes. I’m also starting to think she’s not turning into the fashion icon this blog is pushing her too be. She’s had too many misses for me the past few weeks. However, I still think she does dress very well most of the time.

  4. toto says:

I loved Lupita photos more at fashion week , the pictures of her seated beside the giggling Anna Wintour were so lovely.

  5. I think it would’ve been better on her if it was a deeper, more red pink–maybe magenta???–and if she’d gotten rid of that jacket. I’m getting Sunday School teacher vibes from that outfit–except the teacher would be like thirty years too young for that outfit. It’s like a sixties style……but in a horrible color. Maybe January Jones could’ve sorta pulled this off, with her hair……

    • littlestar says:

Yes, getting rid of that jacket would help a lot. Or if the dress was fitted in the bottom. I’m okay with the colour, but that’s because pink is my absolute favourite colour.

  6. vv says:

    Lupita has a shoe problem.

Helen is so effortlessly cool. She looks great in that jacket but I am not sure just anyone could pull off that jewel thing.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I love Lupita’s outfit. It’s a traditional silhouette that could look matronly, but when it’s contrasted with her young, fresh face I think it looks ladylike and sophisticated.

    • Nikkie says:

Love it too. Very pretty in pink. Daniel Bruhl’s wife is next in best dressed and then Helen Mirren is straight gangster.

      • J.Mo says:

I love the outfit too, super pretty but I think people expect something modern & edgy. This would work at a luncheon or baby shower.

  8. loveisthecoal says:

I LOVE lupita’s outfit. LOVE! I would also like both Amy’s and Helen’s coats. My boyfriend (Daniel) looks great and yes, he should definitely ALWAYS keep the stubble. 😉

  9. StepfordWifeNot says:

Lupita is very pretty in pink, but she really needs something that falls below the knees – she doesn’t have good legs and those silver shoes are nasty!

  10. AlmondJoy says:

Would love if she’d worn different shoes shoes, but other than that I think she looks really pretty. She’s always so classy.

Would someone please explain what “good legs” are? My legs are similar to Lupita’s, strong and muscular instead of being stick thin. I’m guessing that all of my skirts should be over the knee as well.

    • Oh yeah, my legs are the exact same way. I think she looks fine….we can’t all cover our ‘imperfections’…..

      • AlmondJoy says:

Thanks, thought I was the only one that liked her legs. I’ve seen it mentioned many times that her legs are too chunky, but I think she looks great. Nothing wrong with diversity and different body types.

      • nicegirl says:

There is NOTHING WRONG with the way her legs look or are shaped. How ridiculous. If your legs are like Lupita’s, they are beautiful.

      • littlestar says:

I love her legs too! I also have very muscular legs & I love it when other women aren’t afraid of showing their beautiful muscular gams off.

    • RiddlesKitty says:

There’s a difference between muscular, and doughy. Muscle and fat do not look the same.

  11. LAK says:

I’ve never seen a good chanel outfit on anyone younger than 60!

Or is the cut too regal for young people?

I look forward to rocking the chanel when I am 60, not a day before.

    • Santolina says:

That’s it, isn’t it? Chanel is a bit too ornate and fussy, and calls too much attention to itself. However, that may be a plus in later years. Nicely said!

  12. Ice Maiden says:

The dress might have been OK – but no more than OK – without the fugly jacket, which makes it look old lady-ish. Though of course a stylish ‘old lady’, like Helen Mirren still wouldn’t’ be caught dead in it!

  13. bns says:

I like this look on Lupita, but I wouldn’t on anyone else. Her makeup is flawless.

  14. wendy says:

Cloying. Had to look that one up. Can’t say I have heard that one very much.
Thank you for the vocabulary expansion.

  15. j.eyre says:

Holy Mackerel – Daniel looks incredibly hot here. So hot I almost forgot to giggle at Ruth’s… are we calling that an ensemble? But I like Ruth as much as you like Lupita so I give her a pass every time – her “creativity” in clothing amuses me.

I do not always think Lupita hits the mark fashion-wise but I like this outfit very much. I like Amy’s too. She may not stand out but she looks good and the coat’s fit being unstructured makes it interesting. I love Helen’s hair, not so much the coat.

    • Kate says:

Adams looks beautiful to me and I continue to find it funny and sad that this site repeatedly treats her so poorly bc she’s not constantly begging for attention.

The constant Adams insults are wrong and uncalled for.

  16. Hasi says:

Love the trench. It’s Burberry Prosum, and you can of course have it without the jewelry . The jewelry makes it special, and this is why it costs nearly $ 5,000.

  17. willowtree1992 says:

I actually think the pink looks lovely on Lupita! I am not a super fan but I think the pale pink with her skin tone makes it go from blah to fabulous. I also don’t understand the “good legs” comment. I am the proud owner of strong, muscular looking legs and often get compliments on them. Every one and every body is beautiful, in my opinion, especially in their natural form. Long thin legs, long thick legs, short and thin, short and thick, etc, etc…let’s spread the body love 🙂 I hope everyone is having a great weekend by the way! :]
    love,
    jersey girl

  18. Janet says:

Love Dame Helen’s haircut but it looks like cheap costume jewelry on the trench coat.

  19. Camille (TheOriginal) says:

    Lupita looks lovely.

  20. Jessica says:

This dress & jacket looks way too young on Lupita. It looks like something a ten year old would wear to church.

  21. Jani says:

Tired of all the fuss over Lupita. Her ankles are thick and she wears her dresses too long making her knees look fat. She is average.

  22. Coconut says:

    Love lupita’s whole ensemble!

That thing on the other woman is in no way a peplum! More like a bulky waist-warmer. Wouldn’t look good on anyone but especially a non beanpole.
