Armie Hammer apologizes for his ‘unnecessary social commentary’ on ‘selfie culture’

22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards

Stan Lee passed away earlier this week. It was sad for millions of people who loved him and the characters he created throughout his lengthy career. Many comic-book fans (celebrities and non-celebrities) posted tributes to Stan Lee on social media, and many of them included personal photos they had of themselves with Stan, from movie sets or Comic Con or meet-and-greets or signings and a million other events. Stan Lee was known as a super-approachable guy who loved his fans, so of course a lot of people had personal photos of him. All of that rubbed Armie Hammer the wrong way. Poor petty Armie went off on Twitter about how people were including photos of themselves with Stan Lee. He’s deleted the tweets now, but here are the screencaps:

So people had feelings about Armie and how he came across like a douchebag and like he was sitting around, judging how people grieve for an icon. Jeffrey Dean Morgan called Armie out soon after Armie’s tweets went viral, writing: “Looks like you found a way to use others ways of mourning and their memories to draw some attention to yourself. You sound like a real asshat.” So Armie did delete the offending tweets, and issued an apology:

“While attempting to provide unnecessary social commentary about the current selfie culture, I (in true asshat form — thank you Jeffrey Dean Morgan) inadvertently offended many who were genuinely grieving the loss of a true icon. I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart and will be working on my Twitter impulse control.”

So ends the boy beef? What I love about this whole mess was that it just reminded everyone that Armie Hammer is totally That Guy. He’s a rich, privileged dude who thinks he’s Jesus and he probably truly thought he was making some kind of brilliant point about “selfie culture.” He left his tweets up for a while too, like he read the criticism and was like “NUH UH I AM MAKING THE BEST ARGUMENT RIGHT NOW.” And then I guess his publicist called him and screamed at him.

Yeah and when was the last time you had a hit movie??? Clearly he had time on his hands. Thanks for being our conscience, Lone Ranger 🙄🙄

    • Amelie says:

He was in Call Me By Your Name last year… if not a commercial hit it certainly was a critics hit!

I kind of get where he’s coming from but not when it comes to people passing away, he was a total ahole about that. For example if a family member or friend passed away I would probably post a picture of me with that person! It’s the natural thing to do! Not sure why that was so hard for him to undersetand.

However it always makes me laugh when people go to weddings and then just post a picture of themselves on social media with the caption “Congrats to Mr. and Mrs. So and So!” with a picture of them but the bride and groom are nowhere in sight. I’m like… so you are congratulating your friends by posting a pic of yourself? Alright then.

    • Sigh... says:

Dumdum has a movie coming out next month (“On the Basis of Sex”), so he REALLY should’ve reined it in (Lone Ranger horse-riding pun intended) and is prob the *REAL* reason he (his publicist/the studio made him) apologized.

  2. PlayItAgain says:

That tweet was a perfect illustration of “tone-deaf privileged guy, scolds others for being humanly imperfect.” What a jack wagon.

  3. Char says:

What a jealous loser. Those celebrities worked with Stan Lee making his visions come true and It must have been amazing to meet the man.

It must sound weird for someone trying so hard to happen for so many years and still…safe to say he won’t be ever getting that Marvel money.

  4. Lindy says:

His name inevitably makes me think of baking soda, laundry soap, and toothpaste. He seems pretty awful. I’m sure there are plenty of other talented, conventionally attractive men who can be actors. Can he just go away and we can replace him with someone less douchey?

    • Erinn says:

His great granddad was Armand Hammer – who because of constantly being associated with the brand tried to outright buy it. He was unable to, but he acquired enough stock to get on the board of directors for the parent company and remained one of the owners when he died.

So I mean, I’m sure he’s probably named after this man – but the fact that the guy embraced the association so much that he got his way into partial ownership is hilarious. And I pretty much only refer to Armie Hammer as Arm & Hammer.

  5. Case says:

I just love that Jeffrey Dean Morgan called him an a**hat.

    • lucy2 says:

I do too! I wasn’t expecting that, but I kind of love that he called it like it is.

I do think Armie is a decent actor (and getting better), but he definitely seems to feel the need to weigh in on stuff no one asked him about, and do it in an annoying fashion.

    • Persistent Cat says:

I can hear him saying it (I love his voice).

  6. BaeBae says:

Is it just me or is he almost always doing/saying the absolute MOST? I find him annoying.

  7. Electric Tuba says:

His family owned an oil company and his grandpappy did run the baking soda. Google it up if you’re bored out of your mind and feel like wasting precious time you’ll never get back. He’s nothing but a mediocre rich white man trying to mansplain to everyone he feels is beneath him on how to properly behave according to him. The nannies who raised him should have given him more time outs.

  8. Aimee says:

He’s probably jealous he never made it into the MCU.

    • BlueSky says:

This… and that his bloated mess of a Lone Ranger movie failed to launch as a franchise. I’m sure he was hoping it would do for his career what it has done for the actors in the Marvel movies.

  9. tw says:

Don’t we all know this douche? The golden boy who always got away with anything he said or did…just living in a world of approval and praise? And now he’s just shocked when someone claps back. Whatever, douche.

  10. Penguin says:

He’s just seems like the worst. U do something to show compassion and he’s gonna rip on u tell u it’s not genuine and ur desperate for attention. Boy stfu!
We don’t need white men mansplaining selfie culture and either way I’d wanna hear more on selfie culture from the ppl who take endless selfies or help make these selfies happen

  11. Marty says:

I will never forget that interview where he complained about how hard it was growing up privledged. Like, you want to know who Armie Hammer is? He’s THAT guy.

  12. Ann says:

He is an asshat but Jesus is he gorgeous. Fingers crossed for another social media blunder cause I could look at those eyes all day. Plus I love me a petty bitch. I hope he gets to the bitch level that Billy Corgan and Steven King are at. He can be the yummy Millennial rep for petty bitchery.

  13. Eliza says:

Armie “do as i say, not as i do” Hammer needs to step down.

He took what he judged to be an etiquette faux-pas and in the most public way pointed out his judgment which is a faux-pas…. the true point of etiquette is to make people feel welcome, not to be superior.

JDM is great! And 100% right. Calling people out about making it about them, just made people call AH about making it about him “i worked with him too”.

  14. detritus says:

Reddit was flooded with remembrances and I got annoyed. Mostly because they all were about welcoming Stan to heaven, a picture which included all white men and a gorilla.
Or positioned him as one of the leaders of wholesome (all six being white men).
I’m annoyed that these people who ‘love’ Stan, who fought for diversity and equality, just shoe horned in some ignoramuses white man heaven.

But, unlike Armie, I recognized it’s not the place to interject while people are mourning. So I waited to bitch about it here.

  15. skipper says:

I like Armie and I loved him in CMBYN. I watched an interview where he said that his mother will never watch CMBYN because of her religious beliefs and she was disappointed in him for taking the role . Armie was asked if that upset him and he said no because he knew he did the right thing by taking the part and had no shame whatsoever about the movie’s subject matter. I respect him so much for that but to take a shot at people who are truly grieving a loss was very wrong and judgmental of him.

  16. Wood Dragon says:

Sometimes he gets himself a bad case of foot in mouth disease, but his heart is in the right place. I loathe selfies too, but in this case they are a real tribute to a tremendously influential man who shall be missed.

  17. Chaine says:

Translation: Troll prolongs his trolling by making us all rage about him for again for the same thing.

  18. holly hobby says:

He was double downing on Twitter for awhile. And people were pushing back. I really do believe his publicist and team told him to knock it off.

  19. HS says:

Forget the selfie – what I find more egregious is when someone dies and a celeb posts a pic of *themselves* from a movie or song or something relating to that person and then writes, so sad to hear so-and-so passed, what a legend, what an icon, etc. etc. etc. subtext here is, Y’all remember that project I was in? That is so much more making something about yourself than posting a selfie, in my humble opinion *shrugs*

  20. Chelsey says:

Oh, Armie. You’re such a pretentious snob, just own it! :pats head:

  21. Marisha says:

I tend to agree with Hammer. It is a new thing that you commemorate a deceased person by putting up a picture of you and the deceased person.

In the old days before social media I distinctively remember that there would be a photograph of the deceased person with a thick black stripe in one corner during the mourning / funeral.

And I wouldn’t put it beyond certain celebrities to use the death of a deceased person as an opportunity to self-advertise.

    • Marianne says:

Yeah but Im sure after the funeral, you would pull out photo albums and look at old photos that would include other family and friends in them? And share stories where you also were present.

Like, its really not a new concept. Its just a different way to present that.

  22. SallyTomato says:

If he hates selfie culture so much he might want to avoid his wife’s Instagram…

  23. Amy says:

Wow, those tweet replies were incredibly rude. Damn, dude! Get off social media for the day if you don’t wanna see that stuff. Plenty of people avoid social media when they recognize there’s going to be a buttload of posts that will be obnoxious or painful to them (say, Mother’s Day for people who have lost their mothers and find it painful to see those posts). Why people eschew the “if you don’t have anything kind to say, don’t say anything at all” mantra is beyond me.

  24. anon says:

He’s so silly, he’s promoting On the Basis of Sex now and news about him being cast in the Rebecca remake was announced. What a stupid move to create this contoversy right now

  25. Lola says:

He did not need to apologize for his comment. He was not insulting anyone, just stating a fact. In Hollywood self promotion is key, I mean how many posts does this site have on the Kardashians.

What he wrote was correct. Did notice that actors that had worked with Lee posted farewell sentiments with Only Lee’s picture as part of the post. That to me is class. A true farewell, no hype or self promotion.

People need to stop, if you have your opinion, others can have theirs too, even if the others opinion are “apparently” bothering you.
