I only recently saw Tully, and I have to give Charlize Theron a lot of credit for it. Not a lot of actresses would have gained all that weight and then exposed their body for role about postpartum depression and the realities of motherhood. Charlize’s reward was… a Golden Globe nomination, well-deserved, but she flew under the radar so much because no one really talked about her performance. Charlize seemed resigned to flying under the radar too – this Dior gown doesn’t seem like what you would choose if you were actively Oscar campaigning. It’s an okay dress, and on-trend with a lot of the black-and-white vibes. But it was just sort of boring and safe. Even the too-large bow didn’t irritate me.
I was surprised to discover that Dior dressed other women besides Charlize, and that Dior gave their best custom look to… Kiki Layne, star of If Beale Street Could Talk. This was such a princess moment on Kiki, like the kind of princess moments Dior gave Jennifer Lawrence. I love this.
My least favorite Dior? Elisabeth Moss’s Dior cocktail dress. YIKES.

Elisabeth Moss always, always looks uncomfortable to me in photos. I think if she’d looked more confident and not so hunched, she could pull off the dress. But maybe the dress is uncomfortable, maybe it itches who knows, maybe she knows it’s not a great dress.
That dress loooked like a cardboard box on screen. It was soooo bad. For some reason she just can’t seem to get it right on the red carpet. Maybe it’s the Scientology.
Lol. I agree that she’s always slightly askew.
Looks like Xenu styled her.
Moss could pull off a tuxedo minidress, just not THAT one. That cut makes her look like a box.
Kiki’s dress is my fantasy wedding dress.
I AM getting married in 2020 but I highly doubt our budget would allow me that frothy, dreamy creation.
Oh well, a girl can dream.
Hey, you should think about getting it made, I sew a little and the construction of this isn’t at all complicated. The hardest part would be finding the bodice to build on top of. You want the bodice to fit perfectly. You can find some very beautiful tulle in most cities’ garment districts/fabric stores or even online.
Get it made! Amazing dressmakers out there. I really wanted a House of Mooshki dress. I got it made for €300.
Seriously, don’t give up.
My mother is a former wedding dress designer and we designed and made my wedding dress together. It really makes the dress feel special and personal to you to get to be a part of the process. I agree with those saying you should consider getting your dress custom made!
While recently cleaning out my mother’s home of 60+ years, I came across her 1949 wedding dress wrapped in tissue and stored perfectly in her cedar chest. It was a sumptuous satin with a long train, featuring a boatneck bodice hand sewn with hundreds of tiny seed pearls. I always marveled at how well her dress fit whenever I saw wedding photos. I could tell by the seams that it was beautifully handmade.
Tassiegal – if you have a vision, seek out a dressmaker. You could get exactly what you want at a fraction of the cost of the original.
Kiki is gorgeous. Really stunning.
She looks regal. So beautiful.
Gorgeous woman. I would love the dress completely if the bra cups weren’t showing. If the color of the gown was closer to her skin tone, perhaps it would work. But I feel like the gown wasn’t made with a WOC in mind.
Yes, I’m not a fan of the visible bra cups either.
I actually think that Elizabeth Moss’ dress is cute, it’s just not right for her.
Your Satan is showing, Charlize.
WTF?
@Svea – I think she’s making a reference to the Devil’s Advocate 😉
Haha. Yes it is!
Kiki….IS EVERYTHANG!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Kiki wins this round but Charlize looks lovely. I mean, she’s Charlize Theron, she’s gorgeous, but this dress is a bit on the safe side and not as fun as some of the things we see from her, but she still looks good. But Kiki really looks amazing.
Kiki looks amazing!
Charlize and Kiki look gorgeous, though I don’t love the bodice of Kiki’s.
Elisabeth looks so uncomfortable and that is probably the least flattering dress I have ever seen her wear.
Kiki for the win!
Kiki is perfection. Charlize is beautiful but I thought her look was sort of stuffy. Elizabeth’s does look uncomfortable but then she never really owns the red carpet.
Elisabeth Moss, always a giant question mark for me.
Charlize has had a really long partnership with Dior, and while she was a fashion girl to watch in her early years (pre Dior) as time has progressed she never seems particularly interested in the whole thing. For the most part it’s ‘fine’ Dior town after ‘fine’ Dior gown, and she never seems all that excited to be there. Which is fine – she’s still doing her job and she doesn’t have to love this part. But Charlize isn’t someone to look to as a Fashion Girl. More like “this is what Dior gave me and I’m fine with it”.
Kiki’s dress is everything.
Charlize’s dress is just flat out boring. I’ve seen Jovani and Terani dresses that look just like it. For a fraction of what hers probably cost.
What is that thing in Charlize’s arm, a Timex rubber band? I’m confused?!?!
Time’s up bracelet
The dresses are both nice enough … but the tulle one is gorgeous. Maybe the more mature one for Charlize and the modern one for the new, upcoming kid?
Charlize could look gorgeous in a canvas bag, so she always has that going for her, regardless what she wears.
You hit the nail on the head, about Ms. Moss’ dress. Meh. Not very flattering.
