Here are some photos of Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara out and about in New York this week. They were in town because Joaquin was promoting his latest film at the New York Film Festival, although Rooney did not walk that carpet with him. Their street style is… a struggle. Rooney especially! I expect Joaquin to dress like a slob, but Rooney is pretty fashion-conscious. She looks straight out of the ‘80s in those jeans, but I guess that is the style these days (ugh).
And yes, Joaquin’s hair looks like that now. He’s shaved the top of his head for some reason, and people assume it’s for a role although does anyone know for sure? He possibly just did that for sh-ts and giggles. I remember when Alex Skarsgard did something similar with his hair, and it was to play a bald/balding character.
Meanwhile, I watched the trailer for Joaquin’s latest movie, C’mon C’mon, and it looks surprisingly sweet. Like, it’s just about a family and he plays the father of a little kid and that’s what the whole film is about maybe? Critics at NYFF did not like it. The AV Club called it “disappointingly precious.” The NY Times called it a “melancholy journey.” Still, there is some hope (I guess) that Joaqun might make another awards-season run. The music and the black-and-white made me think it was a Woody Allen film, honestly. (It isn’t.)

He doesn’t pull it off as well as Alex did. Probably because Joaquin has a permanent stick up his a–.
Goodness, it looks like he has aged 10 years in 1 year!
And Rooney’s outfit is not flattering. Although she does look more healthy since having her baby. I always thought ED when looking at her before – and I do realize that applies to 99 % of Hollywood!
I’ve been in New York three times in the last 2 weeks. Everybody is dressed like a slob. My sister commented that the whole city looks down and out.
Same in DC. The pandemic is making it really hard to heal from the trauma Trump inflicted on us.
Huh? I live in DC and it’s perfectly the same as always.
@Soni’s right. Nothing different here in DC.
Come on indeed. They look like normal people. It’s refreshing and… normal.
I love Joaquin, but man an actress (or any person of color) would never be able to get away with the stunts he has pulled in the past during awards seasons/campaigning. I remember he walked out on several interviews several years back.
I also think his hair must be for a role.
Those jeans are awful on everyone but the most tall and slim of clotheshorses. Can’t imagine who thought it was a good idea to go back to the era when we all looked like we had on diapers underneath.
Rooney’s pants are the style. I just cannot with the pleated front acid wash jeans. I was there the first time. I work in retail and you really can’t escape them. I have no desire to relive bad fashion. I’m almost 50, I am so not here for it.
Same. I can’t do 80’s or 90’s fashion at all
That looks….like a film about family.
So critics are disappointed that Joaquin is….just….acting.
Love this comment. So precise.
My theory is that some celebs want to be comfortable and feel normal when out and about so they wear “terrible” looking clothes. Combine that with not trying to get recognised (is that even possible?).
Also, why do people think it’s ok to pull down their face masks when they’re talking on the phone or face-to-face?
I am very pro mask indoors and in crowded places outdoors (and pro vaccination). But being in non crowded spaces in the fresh air it just does not make any sense.
to me Joaquin is hot even with that hair. love him. talent and looks
This movie looks great and JP is looking daddy hawt in it. When the kid said « you’re crying » I actually had already teared up.
JP will always be my forever crush and I’m happy he has Rooney and River now.
