2022 SAG noms: they thought Nicole Kidman was better than Kristen Stewart?!

Being The Ricardos NY Premiere

I watched Being the Ricardos over the holidays and truly, am I missing something? That movie was SO BAD. Giving an awards nomination to anyone involved in that tragedy is a complete joke. And yet, here we are. The SAG nominations came out this morning and just like at the Golden Globes, both Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem are nominated for Being the Ricardos and I’m just— what?? What is even happening? Other notable noms/snubs: no Kristen Stewart for Spencer. No Jessie Buckley for The Lost Daughter (she totally deserves nominations). And I can’t believe Jared Leto and Ben Affleck both got SAG nominations! Here are the nominations for film:

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Caitriona Balfe (Belfast)
Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley)
Ariana DeBose (West Side Story)
Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog)
Ruth Negga (Passing)

Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter)
Lady Gaga (House of Gucci)

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

[From THR]

Are you really going to make me watch Tick Tick Boom? I don’t want to! I trust that Garfield is good in that, I just don’t have any desire to see it. I do think Will Smith has a good shot at finally winning an Oscar, that is, if he can keep his Oscar campaign on track without talking incessantly about his crazy f–king marriage. I guess it’s nice to see Bradley Cooper pick up a nom for Licorice Pizza… but no love for Nightmare Alley other than Blanchett’s nomination. And while this is probably an unpopular opinion, I’ll say it anyway: I don’t think Kirsten Dunst deserves nominations for The Power of the Dog. Benedict and Kodi do though, I’m glad Kodi is getting so much love.

You can see the TV nominations here – lots of noms for Succession, no surprise. Love for The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, Mare of Easttown and more. Brett Goldstein and Jason Sudeikis were both nominated in the lead category! Which is sort of amazing.

Ugh I so wanted to see William have to grin and bear it when clips of Spencer are shown during the BAFTAs as he’s going to be there.

😭😭 but this snub for Kristen is making winning an Oscar or a BAFTA even harder.

  2. Caitlin Bruce says:

Andrew is fantastic in Tick, Tick Boom. He’s fantastic in everything he’s been in this year. I can’t believe they snubbed Kristen, she was winning all the critic awards.
    I really don’t want a nicole win.

    • Sudie says:

Kristen won a lot of critic awards but none of the major critic awards. She is liked by the critics but her peers obviously don’t feel the same. I admit that I thought she would be the favored by now but I still believe she will be nominated for the Oscars.

    • josephine says:

I don’t see Nicole winning. But I don’t see Kristen not being nominated as a snub. I didn’t think she nailed that role at all.

      • Jan90067 says:

Same here. I honestly don’t get the hype for KS in this role (and I thought the movie was dreadful). I *really* don’t get they hype for Kidman. She was *terrible* as Lucy (and yes, I KNOW she wasn’t being Lucy Ricardo-when she did *those* scenes she was even worse).

The real life Lucy was a hard, foul-mouthed, SMART business woman who didn’t take crap from anyone (yes, I met her twice). NK’s whisper-voiced portrayal was wrong in *every*which*way*. JB’s Desi was more on note tbh.

Let’s face it, one one hand, these awards are popularity awards for the most part, and who can kiss a$$ the best on the other hand.

    • Lucy says:

I really, really enjoyed Tick, Tick…Boom! I was prepared to sort of bare it because I love Rent, Andrew Garfield, and LMM, but it was so good! Andrew Garfield was so charming in it.

    • Anne Call says:

I loved loved that movie. Only one I’ve seen on this whole movie list…

  3. Charm says:

” THEY THOUGHT NICOLE KIDMAN WAS BETTER THAN KRISTEN STEWART?!”

    Always.

  4. Tessa says:

I watched Tik… Tik… Boom, it was alright, he is quite good in it, but the movie itself is a little… exhausting, almost manic. That is probably the point, in which case they delivered, but it kinda made it feel one note to me – it was an urgent, rather than boring, note, but still.
The Lost Daughter is really good, I’m watching it right now, but haven’t been able to finish last night, so far it’s quite amazing, I wish it’d gotten more love.
Can’t work up the courage to watch the Power of the dog and, frankly, haven’t even heard of some nominated movies. Off to look them up.

    • Soapboxpudding says:

It’s not nearly as intense as you’d expect. I hesitated too but it doesn’t go where you’d expect it to. Definitely recommend.

    • Jayna says:

I loved Power of the Dog. I wasn’t expecting Benedict to disappear into that role, but he was brilliant. The young co-star, Kodi Smit-McPhee, deserves to win best supporting actor. I loved his performance.

    • Kitty says:

thanks, ladies, will watch this weekend then

  5. Ann says:

I didn’t love Kristen’s performance in Spencer. It was worthy and kind of daring (or at least the movie was), but I found it exhausting to watch. That said, better her than Kidman in this case.

I kind of agree about Kirsten Dunst but on the other hand, she’s done so much good work over the years without much recognition that I am happy for her to get some love. And very pleased for Kodie, too. He was great in that movie.

  6. Snazzy says:

Brett Goldstein was fantastic in Ted Lesso – I’m glad he’s getting some love

    • Mia4s says:

Very deserved! SAG doesn’t have a supporting category for TV so in general he and Jason won’t be in the same category. So this is interesting! And I will THROW things if the show doesn’t win best ensemble this year. This show even more than most does not have a single weak link!!

      • BothSidesNow says:

I agree!! I was so saddened to read that Jason intends on only 3 seasons, but I would happily watch twice as many!! I don’t care for many network sitcoms, though I have purposely stayed up late as soon as Ted Lasso is dropped for viewing!! I haven’t been this invested in a sitcom since The X-Files!!

  7. Becks1 says:

Well, I haven’t seen most of these, I guess I have some catching up to do (which I feel like I can actually do this year since so many are available streaming.) No nomination for McDormand either.

I have seen Spencer and I actually thought Stewart was…..okay….in it. Like I went in with really low expectations so I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not sure if she was Oscar-caliber in it, but she was better than I had expected.

  8. LightPurple says:

Jessie Buckley and Emilia Jones are being overlooked everywhere in favor of names. Buckley was the best thing about The Lost Daughter, which I did not like. Glad to see CODA get recognized for ensemble and Troy Kotsur for his role but, like Buckley, Emilia Jones is the best thing about that lovely film.

That they nominated Jared Leto for devouring scenery and ignored Ciaran Hinds whose performance grounds Belfast is a travesty.

ETA And I found Will Smith really annoying in King Richard. I know the Williams sisters are happy with that performance but I wasn’t. I kept envisioning other actors in the part while I was watching the film.

    • Case says:

@lightpurple I felt like King Richard almost like…Disney-fied a lot of who appears to be a very complicated man. I would’ve liked the narrative to take more seriously the ways in which he didn’t always treat his kids in the best way, because it felt to me the story was saying “but his daughters became superstars, so his unorthodox methods were right and these silly people questioning him are wrong, duh!” I like Will Smith in a lot of roles but I think this one required more nuance than he gave.

      • Lightpurple says:

I think the fact that his daughters were producers was a huge part of that. And Will Smith didn’t convince me that he was anyone but Will Smith.

    • Jayna says:

Jessie Buckley was brilliant in it. I don’t get why her name isn’t mentioned more in regard to that movie.

      • LightPurple says:

I don’t get it at all. I wanted to see more of her character, learn more about her, what was she doing? Why is she doing that? The other characters, not even her as middle-aged, didn’t interest me at all.

    • manta says:

Thank you!! How can Caitriona Balfe (deservedly) be the only member of the Belfast cast nominated? I side with you for Hínds.

  9. Case says:

I’m striking out with a lot of Oscar contenders this year — I started Tick Tick Boom and I’m so sorry — I love musicals, but I just found the characters to be so deeply annoying, lol. Andrew Garfield plays annoying so convincingly that I had to stop after 20 minutes. Being the Ricardos was extremely bland and paint-by-numbers — had to stop that one early on. AND I stopped King Richard halfway through because I felt like they were really idealizing a guy who really didn’t seem very good to his kids. I just didn’t understand any of these, unfortunately, and I honestly don’t quit movies very often.

I adored The Last Daughter, loved Don’t Look Up, thought KStew did a fine job in Spencer, and honestly, liked The Last Duel more than a lot of movies I’ve watched in the last SEVERAL years (so intelligently written, so wonderfully acted, and such spot-on social commentary) — and yet that’s the one getting no attention because of its bad box office situation. Very frustrating award season for this movie lover. I still have a few I’m excited to watch, though — Macbeth, CODA, Power of the Dog, Passing, and Gucci, so we’ll see.

    • Lightpurple says:

Passing is interesting with a nice performance from Ruth Negga. Rebecca Hall did a good job directing but isn’t getting any recognition.

CODA is a lovely film and Emilia Jones is amazing. To play Ruby, she took singing lessons, learned ASL, and worked on a fishing trawler. Troy Kotsur steals every scene he’s in and Marlee Matlin looks like she’s having a great time with these people.

      • Twin falls says:

        I really liked CODA.

      • BothSidesNow says:

I loved CODA!! I could certainly watch it again and again! Though, the type of medications I take make rewatching movies is an easy task for me, as I miss many poignant moments.

    • Courtney B says:

I agree with you on last duel. I thought it was a great movie. I’m SO depressed Jodie Comer isn’t making these lists. She gave a better performance than most the nominees. Especially when you consider she had to play so many versions of the character given the story structure.

  10. Miasys says:

Tick Tick Boom is great but it runs deep. Watched it with my daughter and we loved it. Andrew Garfield was incredible and the cast was just wonderful. If you are a theater rat or you came of age during the AIDS crisis, you will probably enjoy it. It is not a lighthearted romp. If you do not like musicals or if RENT made you uncomfortable, then it will not be your jam.

  11. Harper says:

I didn’t love Kristen Stewart as Diana, but I am really disappointed that she was passed over. Tick Tock Boom was so boring we turned it off halfway through in favor of no tv rather than continuing on. Glad to see some love for Kieran Culkin in Succession as he stole the show in Season 3.

  12. Beech says:

It was hard to watch Being the Ricardo’s. Kidman’s face was like a mask w/ two holes for the eyes. The black and white scenes were bearable. So much was jammed into the movie. It could have been a miniseries or my preference, concentrate on her relationship with Ethel.

    • Truthiness says:

Nicole’s face didn’t move! Maybe at this point it can’t move? The way she moved her eyes were in an unknowing and childlike way, that wasn’t Lucy. The childish whisper voice wasn’t Lucy either. I wonder what happened when Cate Blanchett was attached to the project because she’s a far better actor.

      • BothSidesNow says:

It actually always shocks me that Kidman has all of these accolades when she is barely an actor. I see many that are much more qualified in their field as opposed to Kidman, like Watts is exceptionally better than Kidman. The Painted Veil is one of those movies.

    • TheotherViv says:

Totally. I did think that it got a little better with time. The first half was almost unbearable and it felt as if Kidman had marbles in her mouth. It got marginally better for me in order not feel like “Oh My God I will never get this time back” but that was because Bardem delivered. He did what he could with this.

      • Truthiness says:

Javier Bardem and JK Simmons disappeared into their roles so well, it made the film worth it. Javier has talent and judgment so far above Nicole’s, it’s beyond compare.

    • FHMom says:

Everything about her performance was distracting. I did t care for it at all.

    • MrsWhatsit says:

Agreed. Her face and weird mannerisms were so distracting. And, she was, IMHO, just unlikeable, which can be interesting and well done, but in this case was just sooo boring, I tapped out after about 30 minutes.

  13. FF says:

I’m sorry but the careful inclusion of one (or two) PoC in each category is typical Hollywood ass-covering.

The point was to make more PoC-led films on a wider number of topics than just racism and biopics, while nominating them appropriately. Way to miss the point and just make sure you add enough to each category to avoid being called out but not actually do the work needed in the industry.

They really have just been waiting to go back to business as usual.

  14. Lady Digby says:

The Emmas in Cruella both did great work but comedic perfection doesn’t seem to merit acting awards?

    • Lightpurple says:

I expect to see Cruella do well in the costume and makeup categories but comedic performances are usually ignored, although sometimes supporting parts (Kevin Kline in Fish Call Wanda, Mira Sorvino in Mighty Aphrodite) break through, but rarely the leads.

    • Mia4s says:

Comedic performances almost never get nominated, not for about the last 40 years unless it is a separate category. The awards guilds are about SUFFERING and IMPORTANCE. It’s so dumb. 🙄

The exceptions are rare. I can think of RDJ in Tropic Thunder and Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean getting nominated this century. You have to go further back for major wins.

  15. Registered Belcher says:

I still can’t believe Lady Gaga keeps getting nominated.

    • josephine says:

I actually thought she was the best part of the movie. She’s not good in everything she does, but that role was suited to her and it was a great role in the first place.

    • Sudie says:

I can believe it. Gaga was fantastic in the movie and she nailed her character perfectly. She actually transformed herself into the character and there was nothing of the real Gaga present.

  16. Misskitten says:

This just further supports my belief that most award shows, certainly the big ones anyway, are FIXED. I mean Ben Affleck in the Tender Bar??? The only reason I even watched that is because my boyfriend put on while I had Co-vid and i didn’t have the energy to argue with him about it. But it was the most formulaic piece of sentimental yet non-sensical drivel I’ve seen in a while. And Ben Affleck’s performance was NOTHING special. He was supposed to have a Staten Island accent but can only do Boston, apparently. And don’t even get me started on Being the Ricardos. The only thing done well in that movie was Javier Bardem’s Cuban accent. I am SO sick of seeing Nicole Kidman in half the mini series on HBO, too. Let us miss you, Nicole! Is ANYONE excited about seeing Nicole in a movie or TV show lately??? I don’t think so.

    • Renee says:

I agree on The Tender Bar (haven’t seen BTR yet). That movie was a run of the mill story that didn’t resonate with me at all. Ben Affleck was alright but nothing special. The storyline jumped in the third act and felt forced. Affleck’s nomination is misplaced.

  17. MerlinsMom1018 says:

Caitriona Balfe in Belfast. Full stop. Hands down. (other than Cate Blanchett who I ADORE) none of the others impress me at all.

    • Jayna says:

I haven’t seen it yet. I’m looking forward to it. I wanted to watch it this weekend on Amazon Prime, but I just don’t want to pay full rental at $19.99. I’ll wait until it goes to normal rental price on Amazon Prime.

  18. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I had to stop all things Oscar a very long time ago. It’s truly not about talent and entertainment perfection. This list is yet, again, a spot on display of, “Show me the money.”

  19. Amy Bee says:

I only watched Tick, Tick Boom because I saw a clip of Andrew Garfield and Jon Larson side by side of them singing the same song. I enjoyed it for the most part but I think it dragged on a bit. I get wanting to be faithful to play but I think some of songs could be have been left out.

  20. Lena says:

I’m upset Jessie Buckley didn’t get any recognition for Lost Daughter – just goes to show you it’s more a campaign contest than actual recognition of acting award. In that vein Nicole Kidman is becoming like Laura Dern -she’s good but is she really THAT good? No, we don’t have to nominate her for everything. Kristin Dunst really didn’t deserve anything for her role in POD but she complained rightly about being dismissed earlier and really campaigned for this. In the same vein I didn’t think affleck would get it for tender bar since on earlier release it was rotten on RT but he’s been all over doing Q & As. so like voters everywhere people vote for names they hear a lot.

  21. Div says:

Huh, interesting….I saw this mentioned several times on twitter by people who weren’t even Kristen stans (but into the Hollywood scene) so I wonder if this theory holds merit:

First of all, I’m not slut shaming her (I like Kristen) and I actually think post Me Too the affair she had would have been looked at very differently (he was her boss, she was like 20-21, he was twice her age, she gave interviews that implied she was mentally in a bad place at the time). Not like excusing cheating, but noting it was a morally murky situation.

Anyway, 3/4s of Hollywood has had affairs-hell Tom Hanks admitted to cheating on his first wife with Rita Wilson-but the lady in the marriage with Kristen was VERY connected socially with a ton of actors/Hollywood people as was her brother (Atticus Ross). I didn’t know this (I thought Ross was a cool guy) but apparently he gave some weird quotes to Vanity Fair or some magazine where he defended his cheating brother in law, said his cheating brother in law was still his best friend, and seemed to blame it all on Kristen?

Point is, she pissed off 2 very well connected people in the industry…even if it was a decade ago. It was a super competitive year and it was a polarizing film, so that’s probably more of the issue, and it wouldn’t be the first time an actor was nominated for a bunch of precursor awards but missed SAG or the Oscar (and she could still get an Oscar nom). But it’ s also possible the above was a factor.

    • bettyrose says:

Oh man, I would really hope that isn’t still haunting her career. That sucks so much. I know Hollywood is about image, but she’s not a teen star, doesn’t need to have a pure image, and it was *ages* ago. Like, she’s marrying a woman, y’all. Get with the times. It’s absolute crap what women get punished for while men skate free until an avalanche of accusations makes it impossible to ignore.

  22. Elodie says:

I endured 10 minutes of tick tick boom solely because Andrew Garfield was in it bit everything has its limits! I couldn’t watch anymore of it.

  23. Kristen says:

In re: the TV noms, I really hope the folks in Squid Game win a bunch of stuff — they were all excellent.

    • bettyrose says:

I agree. I’m a huge Succession fan and it’s nice that Succession is trying to sweep all the tv awards, but Squid Game deserves it more. It was a bigger gamble and had some really excellent performances.

  24. Nic919 says:

I have to think that Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth was better than kidman. I haven’t watched it yet, but I did see Being the Ricardos as it was not one of Sorkin’s better films.

  25. Case says:

Forgot to mention this in my earlier comment, but Jodie Comer in The Last Duel is better than Kristen and Nicole’s performances combined. She is absolute perfection in that role, and such an underrated talent. The way the film is told from three different perspectives of the same events required the actors to very subtly adjust their performances each time and it was just so freaking well edited and performed, with Jodie being the standout.

    • Jayna says:

Absolutely. She was perfection in that role. I just realized she wasn’t nominated. I can’t believe it. I’ve talked on another CB thread about what an amazing performance she gave in The Last Duel.

    • Sudie says:

I agree so much. Actually I think the entire cast was great but Jody was outstanding. Don’t understand why the movie The Last Duel is being snubbed, I know it wasn’t great at the BO, but how many of the films actually nominated have great BO? Ben Affleck probably deserved Best Supporting actor for that role over The Tender Bar.

      • Case says:

Totally agree Sudie, I was just all-around blown away by that movie. Adam Driver was outstanding and Ben Affleck and Matt Damon also put in excellent performances. The movie was made with such intelligence and nuance and I can’t get over how much I loved it, or how badly it is being left out. I think if it went direct to streaming, this would be a very different situation as it would’ve found its audience quicker.

      • Sudie says:

@Case. Yes Adam Driver was amazing and he also deserved some love this awards season. I really can’t figure out why this movie is being overlooked. Is it Ridley Scott or was it the subject matter? It was a dark era and setting but the overall movie was just a great surprise for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  26. Jayna says:

I haven’t seen The Ricardos. It didn’t look that interesting to me. My friend liked it fine enough and said Nicole did a good job. But I do think Nicole gets nominated too often, because some roles she plays are just okay.

    • bettyrose says:

You know, it would’ve been just as fun to read a flashy magazine article about Lucy. I learned a lot about her from the movie and it was fun to watch, but none of the performances are gonna rock your world.

  27. DeluxeDuckling says:

“Nine Days” by Edson Oda starring Zazie Beetz, Winston Duke and Benedict Wong was the best movie of 2021. It was a masterpiece of filmmaking and wholly original. Same producer as Being John Malcovitch and Eternal Sunshine.

I’m disappointed it isn’t getting *any* buzz, it’s a real knockout movie! Uplifting.

    Trailer, for anyone curious:
    https://youtu.be/A73FnWETvr8

    • Case says:

Thank you for sharing! I haven’t heard of this movie but enjoy all of these actors, especially Winston Duke.

      • DeluxeDuckling says:

He’s the lead!! He’s absolutely spellbinding! I hope you enjoy it 💚 I think it’s playing in limited theatres, but it’s also available to rent for like 7 USD on Amazon.

  28. bettyrose says:

Of those choices, give all the awards to Jessica Chastain. She was epic in that role. I’m sure Olivia Coleman was too, but I haven’t seen that part, so right now my vote is Jessica Chastain. It would be a close call if KStew had been nominated. She was great. I don’t understand the Nicole Kidman nom. The movie was fun, and I learned a lot about Lucy, but it Nicole Kidman wasn’t anything special in the part. Is she ever?

    • Penguin says:

Jessica Chastain is an incredible actress, but I truly hated her character in Scenes of a Marriage… which was probably the point.

  29. Hibiscus says:

Don’t want to have to watch Tick Tick Boom either (though I like Andrew Garfield) but looks like I’m going to have to. Kirsten Dunst is the only thing I liked about Power of the Dog. Loved King Richard, rooting for Will who I feel slipped on Richard Williams’ skin. Feel Passing is woefully overlooked but at least Ruth Negga is in the mix. Also liked CODA and wouldn’t be mad if the father won supporting.

  30. Karisma says:

I haven’t seen being the Ricardos yet but Kidman is an excellent actress, Kristen Stewart was playing Kristen Stewart pretending to be Diana in Spencer so yeah I would go with Nicole Kidman 100%. Bradley Cooper being nominated for his 10 mins in licorice pizza no comment, Leto isn’t really a surprised it’s the kind of performance voters like and he’s been predicted since the beginning of the awards seasons. Affleck is receiving praises for The tender bar but I didn’t think he would make it so good for him

  31. Tiffany :) says:

I just watched Don’t Look Up and I am so depressed. I get the feeling that much like Idiocracy, they made a film about our future. Sigh.

    • Fanciful says:

it’s not our future it’s our present. if you don’t think pollies and billionaires are driving the narrative of everything, then I don’t know what to say to you.

  32. Penguin says:

So pleased to see Margaret Qualley got a nom for Maid. She was so good in it, it broke my heart.
