Democrats lost the US Senate too, and dozens of House races are in the air

The past twelve hours have been horrific. Not only has Donald Trump handily won the presidential election, Republicans have won the Senate and there are 42 House races which are too close to call. Bob Casey Jr might lose his senate seat in Pennsylvania. Democrat Elissa Slotkin is trailing by a few thousand votes in Michigan. Tammy Baldwin might win in Wisconsin, even though that state voted for Trump. Ted Cruz won reelection. Sherrod Brown lost in Ohio. Jacky Rosen is losing in Nevada. Republican Kari Lake might lose in Arizona. So… there will be a Republican majority in the Senate, we just don’t know how big. It’s insane that Donald Trump literally had no campaign infrastructure on the ground ANYWHERE and yet he has these kinds of coattails, to the point where voters in dozens of states voted Republican across the board. Nancy Pelosi said yesterday that she believes Democrats will retake the House. I’m not so sure.

There are already people throwing conspiracies out into the world. While there was absolutely voter suppression and election interference – more on that in a moment – when you look at what was happening across the board in suburban areas and within the demographics of the shockingly broad “Trump coalition,” we have to admit that this was a Republican sweep. This was Americans in dozens of states going all-in on fascism and stupidity. This was an electorate completely rejecting Kamala Harris and Democratic candidates, nearly across the board.

Do I also think that some weird and criminal sh-t went down? Of course. Russian operatives were literally sending in bomb threats to Georgia polling stations. Various Republican governors were successful in their usual voter suppression tactics. Republicans were literally burning ballots and harassing election workers. But honestly, Trump’s margins show that people really came out to vote for him and every Republican.

My race is a disgrace. These pitiful rich white men are going to burn it all down and sell us off for parts while mediocre white people run around with their heads up their asses cheering them on. I’m so ashamed. Thanks for being my go-to news, Kaiser.

  2. girl_ninja says:

The numbers show white men and women and Hispanics voted for DT. He put a mirror up to who and what this country is.

I am heartbroken at the lack of morally shown. Take care of yourself people. It’s going to be a dark several years.

I said in a post last week that I thought the number of Hispanic voters and black men voting for Trump would shock alot of people. The white male vote was always his and of course the idiot moron white Trad type woman. I’m horrified. This was a big victory. They handed him the future.

      • Fabiola says:

I live and work in a diverse town and it has always been blue till now. There are trump flags everywhere and all my colleagues who are Asian, middle eastern and Hispanic all voted republican. It’s not just white people. The democrats need to focus on the economy and security. Not project 2025 propaganda. They need to focus on regular people not Hollywood.

      • Cait says:

You forget black women in all this.

Up 2% to 7% for Donald Trump that’s alot for us

    • Colleen says:

Few years? Try decades. The Supreme Court gave him immunity. The crimes perpetrated in the next term will set us back a century. And women will have no rights at all due to the Court. We are moving to Europe.

    • Barb Mill says:

It was hispanic men. over 60% of hispanic women voted for Harris.

There are really 2 countries in the US.

The depth of hatred the majority have for women, people of colour and immigrants is terrifying and it isn’t just a US problem. History has shown democracy can’t last forever and I believe we are seeing the end of it in real time. We are destroying ourselves, our planet and our civilization and the majority is good with that as long as they can keep their women down, their beer flowing, reality tv on and “the foreigners” out.

In my head the phrase “fiddling while Rome burns” is on repeat. I tell myself not to be so dramatic but the sad fact is, I truly believe we can’t come back from this. He has promised this is the last time Americans will have to vote and that he will destroy his enemies.

I guess it’s back to being terrified of nuclear war and end of days again.

    • SarahCS says:

I saw a headline earlier when I woke up and briefly checked my news app referencing ancient Rome and saying this is the end of the period of ‘good emperors’ for the US and it’s moving into decline. I try and be optimistic but right now I’m struggling and my heart breaks for everyone who will suffer and die as a result of so many people saying they want this.

This entire election didn’t go the way I expected and I’m crushed but it’s pointing out that somewhere along the line the Democratic Party didn’t hear what middle America and other groups were saying. Kamala ran the perfect campaign, thoughtful, intelligent and honest so why didn’t that connect? Why are people rejecting the Dems so hard?

    • Dee(2) says:

Because they agree more with Trump and things he represents. This was not a messaging issue. I know it’s really hard for people to accept but a lot of people are a okay with Republican policies against women’s choice, the environment, lgbtq issues, restorative justice, and there’s not a message that is going to get them to see that differently. I think it’s human nature to wonder if you would have did something slightly different you would have had a different outcome but I’m not seeing it here. This is who 53% of voting Americans are, we have to accept that.

      • Becks1 says:

Yeah, we need to stop with the whole “why didn’t Kamala connect??” People heard her message. They chose the sundowning white man who is racist, homophobic, sexist etc. They didnt do that because they didn’t like Kamala’s economic plan.

    • Becks1 says:

      Racism and sexism.

Also, the Rs run hard on disinformation and the idea of absolute authority – so they’ll put it out there that your groceries are high because of Joe Biden, and Trump can fix that, and only Trump.

Of course Trump can’t. But its been a strategy that has worked for the Rs for decades now.

Their other winning strategy is giving people someone to hate, someone to blame for your problems. Your groceries are high? Its not just Biden’s fault, its the fault of the immigrants that just moved in on your street. The ones who came here illegally, not the “right” way like our ancestors did. He’s often compared to hitler and this is just one of the big ways he is like him.

      • SarahCS says:

Easy answers to all your problems (it’s ‘their’ fault) and people who don’t question if what they’re being told is too good to be true. That and the good old ‘they won’t eat MY face’ confidence. Populists have won before and they will will again.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

This is why I’ve been non-stop crying. The country chose hate. I’m wallowing in a dying country.

    • blueberry says:

Because people are blinded by racism and sexism and fear mongering and selfishness. They chose to believe that this absolute troll would magically make their economic situation better (he won’t) and overlooked all the other issues that will lead to the downfall of the country. They tell themselves that the policies won’t affect them (leopards meet faces, etc) and that we had him before and it “wasn’t that bad.” It’s a shameful day to be American, that’s the only way I can frame it.

  6. Jessica says:

All because racism and misogyny ruled the day….

    • Barb Mill says:

It’s more than that. It’s fear. White people are afraid that they are soon going to be the new minority. It’s why old white guys are so bent on anti abortion. The population among white is going down and they don’t want to lose their power.

  7. blueberry says:

It’s bad, yall. We won’t know the results of the House races for a while but that will literally be the only check on his power. I don’t know what I am this morning, but I know what I’ll be discussing with my therapist later today.

  8. Side Eye says:

We are seeing the end of democracy in real time. I’m trying not to despair, but I also know the internment camps are coming. The jailing of political opponents and journalists is coming. Genocide is coming. The experiment that is America has failed. It has failed because this country was build on the premise that one race is the superior master race, and White identity is completely centered on this idea.

If you ask the average White person in another country would you rather do badly, but have White privilege, meaning you will be better than all Black or Brown people? Or would you rather everyone does well as equals? Most of them would pick the second option. Yesterday Americans picked door number one. I overestimated just how racist people are at their core and how much they hate women, because I am on this site and reddit which are my safe spaces. Look at how these fools reelected a man who literally left them to freeze to death while he went on vacation – they voted for him. They vote for Abbott for MTG for Boebert. White Supremacy is a hell of a drug – this country was FOUNDED on it – it’s why President Obama was so triggering and heads exploded about arugula – this is them correcting to get back to their roots.

Over the next few years I am going to sell my condo and retire abroad. I’m a brown skinned immigrant – I’m not staying to be sent to a gas chamber. I’m not letting my child stay. He graduates HS in 2027 – he goes to a fancy private school we have decided (we are both also Canadian citizens) he is applying to Canadian Universities to continue his education.

I am terrified for VP Harris, President Obama, all our Democratic officials, the judges who oversaw his criminal trials and the people who served on those juries. I am terrified for real journalists and those of us who disagree. It’s not safe here. I don’t know how I am going to survive here until 2027. One day at a time. Stay safe CB. Talk to someone guard your mental health. I got rid of FB, was never on Twitter, and canceled Prime. I am done with billionaire welfare queens that interfere with democracy.

    • blueberry says:

I dunno… we were in Germany last week and the xenophobia was palpable. If you’re white, you’ll probably be fine in Europe, but the rest of us don’t have many options.

      • Alice says:

I am European and have never had such experiences despite working and living in multiple EU countries. We generally do not think in colours, I only am reminded of that in USA and Canada, in a negative way

  9. Mcali02 says:

I pray everyone who voted for him is directly impacted by what he and the rest of those evil bastards are going to do to this country.

    • SIde Eye says:

I totally agree, but sadly, If they are impacted, they will just blame the Dems. The leopards will eat their faces and they will cry out the leopards are eating my face! And Trump will say no that is fake news – they aren’t, and the cult will believe him. Look at how many people in that cult lost a relative because of Trump’s incompetent Covid response – he stood at a press conference and suggested people should inject themselves with bleach – their relatives died, and they ran out to vote for him anyway. There’s no critical thinking with this cult – and wait till they do away with the Department of Education altogether.

At the moment, my one cat is upset because we were gone and “barely knows” us. The other one is flipping hyper. My kids are upset and trying to understand why the vote resulted in a subpar traitor getting re-elected with a bunch of fascists. As kids we took them to various places in Western and Central Europe so they could gain a better understanding of WWII. We all feel the parallels between this and the Civil War in the US is being repeated.
I am desparately hoping that the House flips. I’m aware it might not happen, but if it does, we’ll have one single important branch of government to safeguard democracy like before the Civil War: https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/november-3-2024

If not, I pray (and I am no longer a practicing Catholic) that two years is too short to dismantle a democracy.
