Prince William had a BAFTA-related event, but he still won’t go to the BAFTAs

On Wednesday, Prince William had his first event of the week. He hasn’t worked since the 6th, and it still seems bizarre to me that William and Kate planned out a flurry of events ahead of the Invictus Games, but they only scheduled one event each this week. Maybe it’s like I theorized – they finally understood that they were coming across as particularly desperate and attention-seeking. But that doesn’t explain why they’re choosing to skip the BAFTAs on Sunday – even a hater like me wouldn’t have said that their BAFTA-attendance was Sussex-related. William is BAFTA president, and their office hyped the idea that they would attend the BAFTAs this year. There was definitely an expectation that they would go and it’s bizarre that they announced their refusal to go with zero excuses given. People Magazine mentioned something many commenters noted – that the Wales kids’ school break starts on Friday. Yeah, that’s probably it. William, Kate and the kids are going on vacation, so no BAFTAs for W&K.

Anyway, I bring up the BAFTA stuff because William’s Wednesday event was BAFTA-related. He went to the London Screen Academy and met with young people who are learning various filmmaking/technical skills through the Collaboration Project. He got to play around with cameras and make jazz hands. Apparently, this is all part of a new approach for BAFTA President Peg – the BAFTA organization should not expect him to turn up to their film awards because “aides say that the Prince of Wales wants his focus this year to be on highlighting the next generation of talent which is coming through academies and colleges like the London one all across the U.K.” So… no schmoozing with movie stars? No big premieres for charity? What a waste of a royal patronage. They should give the BAFTA presidency to Prince Edward, he would love it. And he would show up to the BAFTAs every year.

PS… I still don’t understand William’s facial hair and how he’s trimming his beard.

William should be replaced if he has no interest in it. Maybe Edward or sophie.

    • Lightpurple says:

Edward has wanted it for decades and would probably actually contribute time to it.

William is likely afraid his Eton classmates will upstage him – and they have done so repeatedly

    • Libra says:

William has a good excuse, being it’s Caroles 70th birthday in Mustique. Family first, you know. It’s not really a vacation but a birthday party. Surely everyone can understand, BBC and BAFTA and duty come last.

  2. Maxine Branch says:

William nor Kate will be missed.

  3. Lady Esther says:

The DM reported that the BBC was none too pleased about William and Kate skipping the event, because apparently without them and especially her in a new gown there is a dip in viewership of the BAFTAs…more criticism of Kate trying to be More Than Just Fashion, but timed before the walkback from KP?

    • sevenblue says:

Does their attendance affect numbers? I wouldn’t guess so. Their own programs don’t even get the ratings. I think, it is more like they don’t get any royal content if they don’t go. BBC has royal correspondents too. They write dozens of articles about them when they go to the show.

  4. wolfmamma says:

This is the next King? The BRF is in serious trouble

  5. Carrie says:

The pic with the girls grosses me out. Why can he never pose with boys? Oh right, his uncle is Andrew.

  6. Sure vacation comes first for the lazies. Can’t “work” got to get their vacation on.

    • MY3CENTS says:

So next time anybody wants WanK to show up they better schedule it according to their children’s school breaks.
This also applies to emergencies, natural disasters and terror attacks.

      • sevenblue says:

But, then they have to do school runs, they can’t do late events 😭😭 These children are gonna read all these articles one day about their parents using them not to work.

  7. Chantale says:

I do not think the BAFTA crowd is too keen on Bully Boy. Maybe the Judi Dench kind of royalist might be enchanted. Even her is more Camilla due to age. I think Chucky would have been a better choice. Al least he is into arts. I do not get that from Bully. He seems to be philistine, IMO.

    • Mtl.ex.pat says:

Tend to agree. William is also just incurious by nature. What a waste. All those resources, opportunities to learn and help and he’s just bored, lazy and disinterested…(edit to add – by learn I don’t mean “learning” like Keen with her nonsense – I mean actual intellectual curiosity-driven learning with a purpose)

    • Lightpurple says:

Several in the BAFTA crowd went to school with him. They aren’t impressed

    • sevenblue says:

Cate Blanchett was kissing his ass at the last show, no? He gave a lot of famous people positions in Earthshot thing. I am sure he can summon a few of them to accompany him, so he wouldn’t look like a loser.

  8. Becks1 says:

I am so sick of seeing him in blue blazers/sweaters and then blue or brown chinos. He really needs a style upgrade, stat.

  9. Nanea says:

Why am I reminded of an overpriced adult daycare program whenever I see the Windsor-Wailses-Parker Bowleses out and about?

What do they achieve for those whose working days they interrupt?

  10. Over it says:

I can’t stand his bald headed eggplant looking , bullying, racist azzzz

  11. Libra says:

I agree, Edward and Sophie would be delighted to go and give an appearance of being interested.

    • Lady Digby says:

Agreed @Libra Edward has a genuine interest in acting and worked for Andrew Lloyd Webber at one stage. Will has always let the BAFTAS down with irregular attendance. However, last year when he showed up like a braying donkey , laughing at his own jokes, to the horror of those young actresses who stood there appalled was a new low.

  12. Tina says:

Getting dolled up and appearing with Kate at the Baftas would be the easiest win. Like guaranteed coverage it’s so wild to me that he won’t do it. Hes really going to dig his heels in and do almost nothing as King.

    • Beverley says:

He must really despise KKKhate right now. How long can this obvious mess go on? Just get divorced already!

      • Asantewaa says:

He doesn’t want to go with Kate. He would be questioned about kate’s absence, so it is better he doesn’t go at all. I smell a rat!

  13. Miss Scarlett says:

This is really abhorrent behavior. Jet off to mystique after the BAFTAs! Why are they allowed to have holiday after holiday in exotic locations all the while doing essentially nothing? William and Kate shirk duty after duty. They could take a private jet Sunday night, but no, having the entire 7 days of vacation is more important than even trying a little bit.

  14. Eurydice says:

I have nothing to say about BAFTA – just that William’s beard makes him like a moth-eaten rodent.

  15. Lady Digby says:

Will doesn’t go where he doesn’t want to. He hates the BAFTAS and he won’t be attending any women’s sports matches anytime soon either!

  16. KASalvy says:

Will doesn’t want to be at an event where he’s not the center of attention. In a room full of BAFTA members for an event that’s specifically NOT about royalty, he doesn’t matter.

  17. QuiteContrary says:

I love the expression on the face of the young woman who has her arms crossed over her chest. She’s like, “This guy is such a dweeb.”

  18. AR says:

Kensington Palace officially announced that William would be attending the BAFTA. After some time, reports emerged that Kate would be joining him and that must have been the reason William chose not to attend the BAFTA instead of going with Kate.

  19. tamsin says:

I’m genuinely puzzled by the way William and Kate seem to be handling their roles and duties. It just seems like a clown show, and probably their attitude and behaviour behind the scenes would make the most competent PR team look like one. I find it hard to believe that they are both as thoughtless, immature, lazy, self-centred, and undisciplined, as they appear to be, as well lacking any kind of focus or even sense of duty.

    • Unblinkered says:

Agree on all counts, and it’s because they both know they’ll get away with it. There is no-one else in the BRF younger, more photogenic, more high profile. There just isn’t and we’re stuck with them.

  20. SamuelWhiskers says:

I wonder if he doesn’t want a repeat of the gaffes from previous years.

But it’s probably just that they’ll be in Mustique.

  21. TheCrankyFairy says:

Does Kensington palace still host the pre-BAFTAs reception the night before? (Not that he ever attended that either.)
