Princess Kate didn’t go to the women’s Rugby World Cup final & England won

For the past month, the Women’s Rugby World Cup has been played across stadiums in England. The Princess of Wales, patron of England’s men’s and women’s national rugby teams, has only been to one match during the month-long tournament. Her husband, who is patron of the Welsh national rugby teams, has also only been to one match this month. They went to separate matches on the same day so they wouldn’t have to attend another event together. While the Welsh women didn’t do so great in the World Cup, England’s Red Roses battled their way to the final. And guess what? They WON! Another English women’s team winning a major championship! You would expect their royal patron to be there, at the World Cup-winning match, right? Well, Kate couldn’t be bothered. She sent them a good-luck tweet before the final

And that was it. This match was in LONDON, at the Allianz Stadium. The final got historic crowds for women’s rugby. There’s a huge boom for women’s rugby right now following some amazing matches at last year’s Paris Olympics. Meaning, there’s never been more interest in the sport, and it would have been amazing for England’s Red Roses to have their royal patron there, cheering them on AT HOME. Like, Prince William was lazy as hell and sexist as hell for not flying to Australia to support the Lionesses in the Women’s World Cup final in 2023, but at least you could say “well, it would have taken a lot of time and effort to fly to Australia last-minute.” William still should have done it, don’t get me wrong. But it’s absolutely insane that Kate was too f–king lazy to go to London for this major moment in women’s rugby, women’s sports and English sports. Kate literally had ONE day of work last week. This happened on a Saturday too, there was no school run to divide her precious attention. But hey, she tweeted her congratulations after the match. She didn’t sign it “-C” so the message was done by staff.

    Royalty with a small “r.”

    • LurkingWriter says:

Exactly. They’re too lazy to even be monarchy mascots, so what’s the point of them? They’re parasites.

    • kirk says:

Small “r” sure takes up a lot of real estate, (not just limiting observation to 2nd tier in line here either).

Wonder if anybody’s started calculating cost benefits per tweet in relation to duchies & SG? (Obviously have to exclude estimated security cost for such precious people.)

    • Megan says:

It would have been nice if Kate went and brought Charlott

  2. vs says:

Are they really needed? why do British teams need patrons? it is sports….people will always show up! these are patronages to give useless royals something to do

    • jais says:

Fair enough. And then the question becomes what’s the point of royalty at all?

      • Nic919 says:

More importantly what’s the point of the annual millions given in the sovereign grant.

      • Eurydice says:

If you’re going to have a monarchy, then you need a monarch – but the rest aren’t necessary. They could “slim down” the monarchy to just one.

      • jais says:

@eurydice, do you mean only William should be a patron to things as opposed to Kate taking on a role?

      • Gabby says:

That’s always the question isn’t it? Everyone knows the answer and is too afraid to say.

      • Eurydice says:

@jais – no, I think that William should do the duties that are necessary for running the UK’s brand of constitutional monarchy. There are political duties, of course. I don’t know what he’s obligated to do as Head of the Church – and there’s no specific pledge to be Commander-in-chief, but there are hereditary obligations. The reason for Kate (or any other royal) to take a role would be because William wouldn’t have time to cover everything and they’d be working as his deputies. But if Kate doesn’t want to do it, or if William doesn’t want to assign her anything, I don’t see where it says she has to work.

      • Zinjazin says:

So I was inspired by your discussion about what they actually do and I took a quick look at the Swedish court curriculum esp. Crownprinsess Victoria. For example a typical week for her next week she starts off with a presentation at the department of foreign affairs( I guess the will do a presentation to her) . Later that same day there is a diplomatic reception at the Royal castle along with her husband and the king and queen are hosting.
Next day she will visit a military special infantry.
The day after she and Daniel sets off to Japan where they will join the world exhibition in Osaka for 3 days in a row. After that they will continue will state visit in Japan and after that immediately state visit to South Korea.
She works like this many times 4-7 days a week is not unusual. Serious hard work many times 2-3 engagement a day. She also have two kids. Of course some weeks there will be some down time with maybe just1-2 days work.

      • Bqm says:

Don’t even go the SG route. Hit them right in the direct taxpayer funded security. It doesn’t come from the SG but directly from taxes. Will and Kate should be treated like Anne and other working royals. She gets security when she’s on royal business. So should they. Since that’s practically never the taxpayers could save a fortune.

    • Jay says:

I mean… we’ve said for awhile that so many of the royal patronages would be better served by almost any other celebrity being the face of it. You have to show up regularly in order to bring attention to your cause, whether it’s a homelessness initiative, the BAFTAs, or women’s rugby.

In Victorian times, I’m sure it made sense to have aristocratic patrons of all sorts lend support to local causes and projects. They had money, influence, and time, and it was also a way to maintain their privileged status.
And as the number of aristocrats diminished, the royal family took on more and more patronages, because they still had the money, influence, and time to devote to it. One could even argue that since they are getting taxpayer funds anyway, they would be in the best position to help, and it would be a way to maintain their privileges. But TOB has a new approach: what if they just took all the money and did jacksh!t? But what I think he doesn’t realize is that eventually, he would be giving up a lot of the family’s relevance and power. But I dunno, maybe he doesn’t care. Or he thinks that will be George’s problem anyway.

      • Eurydice says:

At this point, it’s a bizarre loop. The public gives them money so they can do things to win public approval so the public can give them more money.

    • lemondrop says:

This! Why does Wimbledon need a patron today? Everyone knows what Wimbledon is. All types of celebrities attend and post on socials so the event gets good publicity as is. Kate doesn’t DO anything for tennis outside of attend every year. It’s not like she speaks on behalf of their foundation or brings tennis to low income children or other initiatives. Wimbledon would be doing just as well without Kate or a royal being there.

This is the case with all sports, honestly. The royals would be more effective their roles as mascots for Brand Britain if they were likable and useful. But NONE of them are likable or particularly useful to any of these sports.

  3. Must be too busy taking care of her wig/wigglet collection. Shame they all look bad under he care.

  4. Tarte Au Citron says:

AND she is supposed to be the sporty one.
WTF though?! This would have been such an easy gig to chalk up her numbers.

    • SunnyDays says:

Right? I actually don’t find it that surprising given she barely shows up at Wimbledon except for the finals and that’s apparently her favourite sport and patronage.

She made sure to release a photo where she looks like MAGA Cowboy Barbie, though.

    • Bean says:

She should have taken Charlotte. Would have been a very, VERY, easy win for her.

    • Jay says:

She could have taken all three kids and had a week’s worth of “Kate, the relatable sporty supermom! How DOES she do it?”.

To not even appear in the final when it was in your (alleged) backyard is shameful. Even if she was actually in Norfolk (or Bucklebury) for the weekend, they have a private helicopter! I also suspect that there’s lackadaisical staff work going on here, too – both of those tweets are ridiculously generic.

  5. Tessa says:

She is working on the autumn video which she will count as work

  6. Seaside says:

She is reserving her strength for those days in October. IYKYK

  7. sunnyside up says:

So lazy. Besides, Harry isn’t here to be overshadowed.

  8. Xantha says:

Well given that England rarely wins when Won’t and Can’t are in attendance, it’s probably for the best that she didn’t go. For the team of course, not for beating the lazy AF allegations.

  9. Iheoma Nwakpadolu says:

So the btitish royals want to be the equivalent of Catholic Patron Saints! What sports/cause need ‘a royal blessings.com’

  10. Amy Bee says:

William and Kate only went to those Rugby matches because Harry was going to be in the UK on the following Monday. I think Kate should have been there yesterday. Just posting a good luck photo is not enough.

    • jais says:

They’re essentially patrons when it’s convenient for them. It was convenient to get photographs at matches just as Harry was to come into town. It was not convenient to go the match when they had better things to do, hunting w friends for William and attending film sets with their kids. A film set that isn’t magically disappearing bc I seriously doubt filming is done. Like take the kids to a film set, sure but reschedule if the team you’re patron of makes it to the finals, jeez.

    • Nerd says:

It was a very “look at me” photo also. No team photo in support of the entire team. No she had to do her usual of wearing something that makes her the center of attention and not the entire team.

    • Chrissy says:

“Oh, but it’s the weekend. I can’t work on a weekend. Family time don’t ya know! Think of my poor royal children!”

  11. Kittenmom says:

    It was a “bad day.”

The Princess is prioritizing her recovery from precancerous cells and preventative chemo. Oh, not to mention last year’s planned and successful major abdominal surgery.

Catherine is looking after her very small children.

    Hmm…what else, what else?

  12. Nic919 says:

England played Canada in the final and PM Carney was there with his wife. There was a leaders meeting in the UK in the days before but he made an effort to stay to watch it. Pretty sure Carney worked way more in those few days than kate has all year.

    • Mtl.ex.pat says:

I loved that when I saw PM Carney was there – he’s a class act. What a great tournament for the Canadians! Wish they would’ve won but considering how far they had to come to make it to the finals it was amazing.

    • Me at home says:

OK, I official envy Canada for your PM. Didn’t Carney also stand up to the orange dumpster fire?

  13. jais says:

Zara and Mike were there, guests of some insurance firm. It’s just funny. So many people would love to go and have amazing seats and watch the final. Just not the patron.

    • Libra says:

Don’t zara and mike have small children also? Yet they made time, but not the patron who needs to stay home for the children.

      • Tessa says:

And it could have been praised by the media if keen brought the kids so they could be with the tindall cousins

  14. Nic919 says:

GB News reports the kids when to visit the set of the Harry Potter tv series for a “private visit”. So she probably skipped the final for that.

    • Libra says:

Dad could have accompanied children so Mum could go to work, like thousands of other families.

    • jais says:

So she chose a private Hollywood-style outing as opposed to showing up as a patron? Huh. It’s not like Harry Potter isn’t going to take a while to film and they couldn’t have visited on another day. And of course William couldn’t take the kids bc he was hunting with friends…oh sorry I mean spending time with his dad/S.

    • Moondust says:

A private visit, nice, so relatable, such a normal family. I don’t have great hopes for these children. They might be even more disconnected from reality than their parents. At least Kate and William had parents who worked.

      • Blujfly says:

I agree. They will be the worst kind of “upper middle class” wealthy adults, no sense of giving back or noblesse oblige, no sense of duty or responsibility. No sense that their position is a matter of luck.

    • Nic919 says:

They couldn’t even bother to turn it into a promoting the british film industry kind of visit either.

    • tamsin says:

If the kids were treated to a private visit of the Harry Potter set, I wonder if it’s the Wales’s version of going to Disneyland, just because of the timing? I should think that Kate missing the final is a very bad look. Doesn’t she know that if Harry were still patron, he’d have been there, and doing all sorts of things to promote women’s rugby. Harry has spoken about his great love for rugby, so I imagine it’s one of the things he misses about England. I remember he spoke about getting a small rugby ball for Archie when he was still a baby. And by the way, Mark Carney’s wife is British, so they both had teams to cheer for!

    • Deborah1 says:

      Excuses, excuses ……

    • Blujfly says:

The Mail says the visit was Friday night… but remember she’s a “solo parent” this weekend as her husband is on his hunting trip!

      • jais says:

Friday night? But the game was Saturday. Why even tell us the kids went on a super special trip to the HP filmset then?

    • M says:

So they are actively supporting a woman who is using her money to harm the trans community. Trash.

  15. Lady Digby says:

Actually I was wondering whether both Will and Kate had been advised to attend serious work events instead of just being seen at high profile Sports finals? Or she just shows up when she’s in the right mood and there’s no better offers??

    • Me at home says:

I mean, Kate could do both? Do some more work-work events and then nobody would question another sports event?

    • Deborah1 says:

Kate is the patron of women’s rugby. Surely that counts for something? It was her duty to attend.

    • BeanieBean says:

Serious like having tea & cake at the Women’s Institute? That kind of serious? She should have gone to the rugby final, but let’s face it, if she had no compunction about missing the VJ Day anniversary event everything is on the table.

  16. FancyPants says:

It’s such an easy job and she just will. not. do it. There’s something pathological about that.

  17. Beverley says:

One wonders how much of Kate’s quiet-quitting Britons will put up with before there’s an outcry she can no longer ignore? She and Pegs are doubling down on their refusal to work. Surely there’s a limit to how much they can get away with.

    • Nic919 says:

I think the private set visit of the Harry Potter tv series shows that Kate doesn’t give a shit about anything but competing for attention when Harry’s around. There was zero reason the kids couldn’t go to the rugby final which is not far from Windsor Castle, especially not with their police escorts.

      • jais says:

I also just don’t believe this is the only day they could go and visit the set. Please. Maybe they were filming something super cool that day but eh still. They may end up doing something with the filming later as a promoting British film type of thing. But as of now, it’s just the Wales kids being the chosen ones to visit a film set. Like meeting Taylor Swift. Which fine, these kids are always going to get special treatment, sure. But on this day, when Kate skipped the biggest game for a team in which she is the patron, so her kids could be treated as the chosen ones….whew. And look I don’t begrudge those kids the experience but could it not have been rescheduled?

      • Catman says:

@jais as the kids get older there’ll be more and more special outings like this and it will rub people the wrong way. There’s no way they couldn’t have gone to the film set on another day. Between this and Mr earthshot shooting birds and boozing for a week with mates on tax payer money. The European royals are so much better than this. Laughable the British royals and their press mock them.

      • Bqm says:

Kate and the kids could’ve stayed at KP for a fun London weekend too. Gone to the set, gone to the match, etc.

  18. Marite says:

Kate somehow looks like a Who from Whoville in some photos, like that top one.

  19. LRB says:

As a Brit, and as a supporter of women’s sport which is becoming increasingly mainstream – the English football, rugby and cricket teams are all world class – I am angry and ashamed of lazy Katie. She is an utter disgrace.

  20. one of the marys says:

This could have been such an easy win. Who is advising them??

  21. Elizabeth K. Mahon says:

Kate could have gone and brought Charlotte with her to cheer on the team, or heck, she could have brought the whole brood with her. It would have been nice for George and Louis to cheer on the winning England women’s team.

    • Me at home says:

That was my thought–what a great opportunity for a cute mother-daughter bonding event! To parallel William dragging poor George to soccer. Although yes, it would have been great for George and Louis to cheer the women on, too. I guess that, with William off hunting–sorry, meeting with Charles–in Scotland, she can’t manage all three kids by herself?

  22. Over it says:

If Kate has to go to all these matches and events when will she ever have time to practice tying her wigglet back ? You all are asking too much now. That hair won’t tie itself.

  23. ParkRunMum says:

I’m with the previous commentator who remarked, these are such easy wins to forfeit, there’s something pathological about her refusal to do them. And I suspect the pathology is her marriage. Diana knocked it out of the park — to use another sporting metaphor — as a single mum, which gave her a massive power base when she negotiated her separation & divorce. I think the powers behind the curtain don’t want Catherine — as they call her — establishing a rival court. Yet another rival court. So given the fact that William the Unwilling is not showing up to events like these, she’s clearly being allowed / encouraged to do likewise. And I doubt she cares about the future of either William’s reign or the monarchy. her kids will be fine either way.

    • Moondust says:

She was lazy AF before getting married. At the beginning of the marriage she would go to a lot of matches at Wimbledon. Once she was named as a patron and it became work she would go to the finals only. She’s allergic to work.

      • Cairidh says:

She only went to the mens Wimbledon games. She was never interested in watching women. I think she only went to a womens game once, after Meghan did.

  24. Tvskygirl says:

Canada was in the final, and our Prime Minister was actually there! Cheering! Kate and William are absolutely useless and lazy.

  25. wolfmamma says:

No empathy, no class no work.. Extremely weakthy and housed in palaces.
This is William’s version of leaving the royal life behind.

    • Lady Digby says:

Honestly @wolfmamma I want republic website to clock watch this couple on a daily basis to prove how little they actually do. Monday nada Tuesday nada Wednesday nada Thursday 20 minutes visit to foodbank, empty handed Friday nada . Cost per week £999 whatever and just one measley visit to show for it! People need evidence to decide whether they justify their funding!

  26. Jaded says:

Good Lort — even our PM Carney was at the game and “C” can’t move her arse to attend it????Bad optics!!

  27. Miss Scarlett says:

Omg this was in London and she skipped?? She could have brought the children for an outing! Family time!

Zara and Mike were there. Kate could have made the effort. But I guess that would be antithesis of her work ethic.
