‘Scooter King’ William is ‘frustratingly light on detail’ about his plans for ‘change’

Scooter King!!! Here are some photos of Prince William on Thursday, during a visit to Bristol, England. He went to Matter, a company working with sustainable technology. He also visited a robotics center and they let him ride a scooter, as you can see. Can someone please call Scooter King’s crisis manager? It should not be this difficult to keep him away from scooters. The man just loves to scoot. Sir Scoots-A-Lot. Arise, Scooter King. Scooter 4 Lyfe. Okay, I’ll stop. Speaking of the birth of the “Scooter King” moniker, it happened because of William’s awkward appearance on The Reluctant Traveler last year. He arrived on a scooter to meet Eugene Levy at Windsor Castle, and Levy asked him some very basic questions about the plans for his scooter king reign. William’s answers were not great, and even royal reporters talked openly about his vague plans, his laziness and his lack of historical knowledge. Well, Becky English at the Mail devoted her Palace Confidential column this week to “what changes (if any) will William make when he becomes king?”

Appearing on Eugene Levy’s The Reluctant Traveller last year, the Prince of Wales admitted: ‘Change is on my agenda.’ The heir to the throne has so far been frustratingly light on detail, and when I asked his press office for clarification, I was told these were all matters ‘for another day’.

So what could the reign of Prince William look like? Having spoken to friends – and William himself – over the years, I would definitely expect a pruning back of the pomp and ceremony we see now. Not an abandonment of it, but a simplification of what he sees as the more ‘archaic’ aspects – think shorter ceremonies with less velvet and plumes.

I’ve also been told he wants to streamline the royal household and change the way things like Royal Warrants are awarded. He’ll constantly ask: just because things have always been done this way, are they really fit for purpose in the modern age?

I think there is also a good chance he will undertake fewer public engagements, with less ‘performative’ ribbon cutting-style events and a greater focus on in-depth engagements.

It’s also clear to me that he wants to be seen as an ‘empathetic’ sovereign, and is looking forward to using his convening power on the world stage.

However, a source told me recently that he does not want to afford change for change’s sake.

‘The thing to remember is that a) they [William and Catherine] are quite conservative and b) they are traditionalists, so the idea that there will be no Trooping the Colour or Coronation is never going to be the case. They see the power of what the institution does,’ they said. ‘Will he question the way things are done and potentially look at doing things differently, in a more modern way? Yes, in the same way he has done with the Duchy [of Cornwall, where he has turned housing over to the homeless, for example].

‘But while there has been a lot of talk – including from him – about change for the future, it’s important to remember who they are and how they think about things.’

[From The Daily Mail]

As we’ve been saying, William doesn’t have actual plans for his reign beyond “I’m not going to work” and “I’ll tweet instead of showing up somewhere.” William has no actual plans for structural changes, or significant changes to how a modern monarchy actually operates or should operate. His idea of “change” is molding the monarchy around his limitations and personal choices. He doesn’t want to work or be seen or show up anywhere, so the monarchy will have to adapt TO HIM.

Great pictures of scoot. Traditional royals work. I wonder what c and c think of more when I am king talk from scoot

  2. Me at home says:

More money, less taxes and less work. Those are Scooter’s plans.

In other news, I hope Harry’s case against the Mail has consequences for Becky, who’s already been discussed two days in.

  3. Steph says:

Every time they get to talking about the “changes” he’ll make, it sounds like Prof Umbridge’s speech when she first arrived at Hogwarts.

  4. He is “ frustratingly light” on so many things and levels. I don’t expect that to change when he becomes king. As for him being an “empathetic sovereign “ that’s a joke too. He is the Prince of Wales and has not learned but a few words of welsh. He is taking public park land for his wife’s separation home. He uses his helicopter like a car at the taxpayers expense and the list goes on and on! He will be a very lazy and selfish and let’s not forget incompetent king!!

  5. Tarte Au Citron says:

They really are horrendously weak at succession planning. 🙁

  6. Amy Bee says:

I’m pretty sure that Becky English wrote a similar article on this topic last year. Did they repeat this article this week because of the ANL court case? Anyway, I might be in the minority but I think it’s a good idea to tailor the monarchy to William’s abilities. He’s socially awkward, lazy and a lightweight. The Palace know his limitations are going to adjust to suit him.

    • Mads says:

@AMY BEE. That’s a very insightful observation, one I’d never considered, and makes perfect sense. The institution is well aware of how unsuitable he is for the role and sidelining him under the guise of “doing things differently” by limiting his public appearances in the main to the big events like Trooping, solves (they hope) a problematic monarch bringing more bad PR.

It doesn’t help them to make statements like “a greater focus on in-depth engagements”. Name one in-depth engagement the Wales have undertaken. Miss me with the busywork of Earthshot and Early Years, they are just vehicles for a yearly photo-op, in William’s case a photo-op with celebrities, not the actual winners of Earthshot.

      • BeanieBean says:

Apparently he handed housing over to the homeless. 🤷‍♀️. Not really sure what BE meant by that, it’s odd phrasing.

  7. sunniside up says:

Charles has been a rotten father but I hope he lives for ever just to stop William being King.

  8. Jais says:

Becky English being sure to let us know that she’s personally spoken to William many times. Awww, does she think they’re friends too?

  9. Becks1 says:

How many ways can this man tell us he does not want to work and will not work more even when king? Here, KP is making sure we know that he’s not going to do all the traditional ceremonial events, and even if he does they’ll be a lot shorter and less frequent than now, that he’s not going to do the bread and butter events, but dont worry, he’ll still show up for Trooping so the masses can cheer for him. No wonder he and Trump get along so well.

I just dont understand how he is so dense that he doesn’t realize his grandmother wasn’t popular just because she was queen. She was popular because people saw her frequently out and about, she took the train to Norfolk (even though she took the helicopter plenty of other times), she gave the illusion of working constantly even with her extended vacations. She didnt go to Balmoral and disappear for two months.

The idea of “she has to be seen to be believed” was a very good and effective one.

If people rarely see the king, the next logical question will be…..do we even need a king?

    • Unblinkered says:

If people rarely see the king (W), he’ll sure as hell have his income from the State reduced – the Sovereign Grant. 10% of what Charles/QEII get/got? Sound reasonable?

  10. M says:

Royalty in general isn’t fit for purpose in the modern age, but other countries have figured out how to modernize while the UK languishes. Making changes requires forethought and effort, and William has never possessed either. The only change is he will acquire more houses and do even less work.

  11. Aimee says:

    FAFO ole Scoot Scoot.

  12. YankeeDoodles says:

The thing the late Queen seemed to understand was that the job — like any job — required a basic level of consistent application, daily red boxes, which she did, even when she did disappear to Scotland for two months, every year, but she was seen and heard from day to day, week in, week out, throughout the year, and those years accumulated in decades, and she set a benchmark. So if she did take a trip to Kentucky to stay with the Farishes, for horse tips, no one really got their knickers in a twist about her absence, since her baseline was established: show up, be adequate, pay attention, steady as she goes. And if occasionally she stopped in the Virgin Islands on the way home, they were happy to see her and no one thought she was shirking. I mean. It’s the long term view.

    • Iolanthe says:

This monarchy is ceremonial and traditional…people felt alls well with their world when their Queen showed up as dependably as the seasons changed and everything was done the way it always was . Something comforting , passing down rituals which remained the same through history. There is no real power , he is just a figurehead. William cannot interfere with the laws of the land or say off with his head, much as he might want to . Superficial changes are happening..things that would make the Queen and Prince Philip turn in their graves . The pathetic scooter is just one in a long line of rubbish moves. He has horses, why cant he ride as his granny did. He might look a smidge more kingly .

  13. Lady Digby says:

Frustratingly light on detail and forever underwhelming: Wilbur never fails to disappoint. The faithful tell us that he is saving his energy to hit the ground running!! In 2024 when it briefly looked like he could have to act as regent or even become King there and then: he stopped working and withdrew from all public duties. He believes that he’s essential to The Firm and the monarchy supporting tabs so they’ll do whatever is necessary to keep him on the throne. He’ll just DO IT HIS WAY and no one can touch him or hold him to account. Sulking and denying them access is his secret power. Current Government are unpopular and won’t be able to stand up to Wilbur as King and if Reform get in they are true blue monarchist so they’ll be cheering him on.
We will see if he is right and that he can get away with just 202 engagements a year when he’s King and still being lauded in the press as an effective and hardworking king whose respected on the global stage?!

  14. Inge says:

“It’s also clear to me that he wants to be seen as an ‘empathetic’ sovereign”

Emphatic? He is very rude to people! remember when a lady baked for him and W went an told her son how awful it was in front of his schoolmates! Or him mocking people scared of dying from Covid? Etc etc etc etc,

    • QuiteContrary says:

      Yes, that’s a lost cause.

He has no people skills whatsoever. That’s yet another reason he’s jealous of his charismatic and empathetic little brother — because Harry inherited all of those genes from Diana and he only got the Windsor rudeness genes.

      • BeanieBean says:

Agree. If you haven’t learned empathy by your 40s, I don’t know how to make you care about people.

  15. Square2 says:

In the latest episode of “The Pitt” (S02E03), a patient implied that Dr. Robbie has mid-life crisis for being 50ISH riding a motorcycle. Here, this “Scooter guy” gave out the same vibe.

  16. jferber says:

Bluntly put, this man is stupid, short-sighted, delusional and a real lightweight. How can he be known as an “empathetic king” if he frequently and violently wails about how much he hates his brother and leaves the country every time Harry comes over? How can he appear on the “world stage” if he has no skills or knowledge? Yes, you can say the same about Trump and that kind of stumps me. The world still turns with an evil, stupid, vindictive, bullying coward such as Trump, so it will still turn when William becomes king. We can only hope William is harmless in his laziness and shirking of work and will not grasp for more money from his kingdom. I would actually take William over Trump as president of the U.S. If that’s a left-handed compliment to William, so be it. Actively destroying the world is far worse than being a shirking, snarky imposter king.
