Platell: No one will say it, but Prince William is ‘the monarchy’s next big problem’

If nothing else, it’s certainly an interesting moment for one of the Daily Mail’s major royalist columnists to choose to whack Prince William. On Friday, the Mail published Amanda Platell’s latest column, “No one seems to dare say it, but William is the monarchy’s next big problem.” I mean… I don’t disagree, but let’s hear her out, maybe Platell will make a new argument for why Prince William is a ticking time bomb for the future of the monarchy. Platell might take a circuitous route, but she gets there in the end: William is terrible because he’s lazy, reluctant and timid in times of crisis. Fascinating! An excerpt:

As he prepared to deal with the worst crisis to have hit the Royals in living memory, King Charles issued a perfectly poised statement that must have been extremely painful for him, distancing himself from his brother and stating that ‘the law must take its course’. But where was William in all of this? All we know is that he and Princess Catherine ‘approved of’ the King’s statement. Why haven’t we heard more from them?

We learn that behind the scenes, William is Andrew’s fiercest critic in the royal family. That he rightly feels both the late Queen and his father indulged his awful uncle for far too long…. So the steel is there. As is the fury. Which he could not contain when Andrew sidled up to him at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral on the steps of Westminster Cathedral. His face seemed contorted with anger. So why are we not hearing more from him now? Is it because he is the most reluctant King-in-waiting we’ve ever had?

Instead of addressing the issue in public, he chose to do a BBC interview on men’s mental health, alongside Professor Green, a rapper and singer-songwriter. All very worthy and an important subject. But it sounded self-indulgent. The headline was ‘William Gets Candid’ and he talked about his own mental health struggles as a first responder when he was a pilot for the air ambulance service dating back to 2015.

For one thing, given the way Andrew’s friend Jeffrey Epstein abused and trafficked girls, women’s mental health would have been the more timely topic. And surely he should be tackling the matter of the moment, the unprecedented threat to the Monarchy presented by the Andrew crisis. William is its future and he should be out and about, front and centre, reminding us of the undoubted benefits of the royals, trying to ensure the Firm’s survival. Not whingeing on about how he was ‘carrying everyone else’s emotional baggage’ and it was ‘really weighing me down’, and he needed time out to recover.

Willliam and Kate do pitifully few royal appearances, claiming they prioritise the ‘impact’ of royal engagements over the ‘volume’. But that won’t wash. King Charles, aged 77, performed 533 official engagements in 2025 while battling cancer, while his hand-wringing son William, 43, did just 202. When Charles was Prince of Wales as William is now, he conducted over 530 royal engagements every year, including 100 visits to foreign countries when he too had a young family, and when William and Harry were grieving after their mother Diana’s death.

Of course we have the utmost compassion for Kate and for William during her cancer treatment. We understand why he took time out from royal duties. But the way he and Kate moved to their new Forest Lodge ‘forever home’ buried deep in Great Windsor Park in 150 acres of a fenced-off, no-go zone, gives the impression they want to distance themselves as far as possible from the rigours and demands of royal life.

It is time for William to man up and front up. Does he want the top job or doesn’t he? Does he want the Royals to carry on or not? There is no doubt that Andrew is potentially a mortal threat to the monarchy, but if William really is as reluctant to become King as he appears to be, it could be that he’ll become the problem, and not just the Andrew.

[From The Daily Mail]

This is similar to a point I made last week, when we learned that William and Kate were “on vacation” at Anmer Hall, just six miles away from Wood Farm, when Andrew was arrested: if we’re supposed to buy the idea that Will and Kate are just one unchewed wonton away from the crown, surely they both should have had more to say after Andrew’s arrest? I even argued that they should have been saying much more BEFORE the arrest. William’s BBC Radio was tone-deaf for the unfolding crisis, but it speaks volumes that no one at Kensington Palace thought anything of releasing that pre-recorded interview a day before Andrew’s arrest in the first place. William’s team – even with the crisis manager Liza Ravenscroft – is simply not built for this.

I’ve seen people suggest that William and Kate are fading away on purpose this month because they want to look “clean” compared to King Charles. That might be the real thought process, and if it is, it’s dumb as hell. “Hiding out in Norfolk whenever the going gets tough” is not inspired leadership. Which is the larger point – William’s people can’t throw tantrums constantly about how he needs to be regent or king immediately and then just… not show up when he could be leading the institution out of a crisis.

Impressed that there was no mention of the Sussexes in that piece. Progress.

    • Mightymolly says:

Oh wow I didn’t notice but you’re right! IDK even what to make of this piece. The tide seems to have turned dramatically. What does it all mean?

BTW, Liza Ravenscroft is such a great name I want to legally make it mine, immediately.

      • booboocita says:

I too love “Ravenscroft,” but not with “Liza.” I feel like so wonderfully, British-ly evocative a name should be attached to a similar first name. Arabella Ravenscroft. Cassian Ravenscroft. Even Ghislaine Ravenscroft, but only if you give it the French pronunciation: jis-LAYN, not GILL-en.

      • mightymolly says:

Oooh, interesting! Fortunately, I haven’t legally changed my name yet today. I like Liza because the Z is such a nice companion to the V in Ravenscroft, even if Liza is a fairly common American shorthand for Elizabeth (and British? IDK). Arabella is always a great name, although I’m not sure I can live up to it. I didn’t realize Cassian was used for feminine names, but I’m absolutely game! I’m afraid Ghislaine with any pronunciation is forever tainted, though.

Heck, maybe Molly Ravenscroft would work! 😉

    • paintybox says:

      😂 major!

  2. Christine says:

I mean, the louder anyone gets about how little the Waleses work, the more they hunker down and refuse. They are the real-life version of “who’s gonna check me, Boo?” The monarchy seriously has a William problem. *shrug* Oh well, a thousand years feels like more than enough.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

They are lazy and entitled and out of control. If the king only has 12 months left, the UK is in serious trouble!

  3. Me at home says:

It speaks volumes that Ravenscroft couldn’t persuade the Wales to issue their own statement about Andrew’s arrest. C’mon Willy, here’s a predrafted statement, all you need to do is step away from your jollies for 15 minutes, read it, and agree to release it under your name. But no. And weren’t the Wales also on vacation last fall when Charles sorta dealt with the titles issue?

If the strategy is to do what they did last fall–completely miss all the action, let Charles deal with everything, but claim after the fact that Willy pushed Charles to do what he did–that’s not leadership, as Kaiser says. It won’t stop Sykes, Lownie, and Willy’s other sycophants from claiming that’s what’s going on.

    • JT says:

@Me at Home Yes, I believe they were on vacation then and when Charles was diagnosed with cancer and Kate’s announcement followed, William was also in the wind. It was his absence during his godfather’s funeral the blew up the sketchiness around Kate’s months long disappearance. He completely crashed out. In fact, every time William needed to step up, carry on, and be the global statesman he claims he is, he always retreats. Always. Then he pops back up to take credit for other people’s decisions.

    • Me at home says:

I read somewhere that Willy told people at BAFTAs that he hadn’t watched Hamnet the night before (Saturday) with Kate because he wasn’t “calm” and needed to be “calm” to watch it.

I mean, WTF? He couldn’t even watch the leading contender, which seems like a fundamental part of his job as, you know, BAFTA president? And was he incandescent, or stressed out, or crying into his tea, or what? And was he “uncalm” about the crimes Andrew had committed, or about the monarchy being under threat, or what?

      • JT says:

Even his presence at the BAFTAS is guaranteed each year and he doesn’t even go to the pre-BAFTAS dinner at KP even though it’s quite literally in his damn backyard. Not being “calm”enough to watch one of the nominated films of the organization you are president of just takes the cake.

      • Lady Digby says:

@Me at home the excuse factory for Wilbur not showing up or not doing any homework keeps on churning. When is Wilbur ever CALM, capable and carrying on focused on the event and people present? Junior is uncalm at any threat to his comfy lifestyle and being told he HAD to attend the Baftas which he usually swerves as a prelude to , gulp, working a five day week plus weekends and evenings when required!

      • Unblinkered says:

Can you imagine Charles when PoW and age 43 turning up as BAFTA President and making similar statements?
        It’s unthinkable.
He was always super-professional, switched on, and invested in the event and its people. All of it.
        William is a FAIL

  4. Alex Can says:

I agree with all this. I want to add that it’s pretty obvious that William is both emotionally broken and has anger management problems. Plus he’s lazy and reluctant to do the bare minimum. I think it means he’s mostly paralyzed and that he only acts decisively when he’s angry and upset. When he finally becomes king it’ll be nuts. But that’s ok with me because it might speed up the monarchy’s end.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

And I don’t even believe the now accepted narrative that William has wanted a more punitive approach to Andrew for years. If he has, it’s only because he may dislike him for other reasons. I’ll never believe he cares at all about his uncle’s crimes except in so far as the crimes make his life more difficult and unpleasant.

      • JT says:

@ Brassy exactly. William has been quite chummy with Andrew for years. The new narrative claiming that he’s always been angry with Andrew and wanted a harsher punishment for him is a completely new PR tactic. For years, both Will and Kate had no issues being seen and photographed with Andrew well after the Newsnight interview. They seemed very friendly and there was even a headline that Kate would rather live near Andrew than H&M. Just a few weeks ago it was said they W&K’s were very concerned about his mental health. All this handwringing about Andrew is bs.

      • First comment says:

And don’t forget that he worried about his uncle’s mental health not so long ago.

      • Becks1 says:

I dont know if this makes sense, but I do think William wanted a more punitive approach to Andrew – but only because I think William wants a more punitive approach to EVERYONE. I think he knows he has to leave Anne alone, but besides that, I think he wants everything that everyone else in the royal family has. He wants the property, he wants the jewelry, he wants the attention – everything.

I think if he could, he would remove titles from everyone except him and his children and carry on with his day drinking and soccer watching.

Because that’s always kind of been the issue right – he wants everyone out, but he’s not going to pick up ANY of the slack.

So I do think he wanted Andrew out of Royal Lodge, he wanted his titles removed, all of that – but not for any crimes or anything – because that’s what William wants for EVERYONE.

  5. MY3CENTS says:

This article is very on point, and I’m actually surprised it’s out there.
The silence on Pedo Andy from the place is deafening.
WanK do not even do the bare minimum so expecting them to show leadership….hahaha

  6. “Man up and front up”! Well the problem with this is that Peg is all hat and no cattle! Peg is a big yammerer but nothing comes to fruition from his yammering. He was all incandescent with rage wanting uncle pedo removed from RL but I believe that was only because Peg has had his eye on RL for a long time. Platell is right about him being self-indulgent!!! He is only self centric and that is all he will ever be. He is a big problem for the monarchy and he may be the one to bring it to an end and not by choice but by incompetence!

  7. Jais says:

Calling the king’s statement perfectly poised is a stretch. But yeah, the rest is on point. The biggest point to me is that William is the briefing king. He briefs through sources that he’s the one who has taken the hardest stance on Andrew. Ummm, sure, if the sources say so, I guess. It’s all just talk. He talks a big game or sorry briefs through anonymous sources a big game. There’s no proof of that. William briefs and leaks and briefs and leaks while he does next to nothing. There’s no proof. There’s no evidence. There’s no action. There’s very little service. Just a lot of shallow propaganda sound bites.

    • Becks1 says:

All of his anti Andrew briefing comes after he sees which way the wind blows. oh yeah, his title, I told Pa to do that!! oh yeah, Royal Lodge, kicking him out was my idea!!! and so on and so forth. He waits to see how public opinion is going and then calls up Sykes or Eden and rants and raves about how strong and angry he is.

  8. K8erade says:

The fact people are starting to say the quiet part out loud about Kate and William is really telling about the state of the monarchy. I have a very anti-monarchy friend who lives in Vancouver, BC that said when Queen Elizabeth died “There won’t be a monarchy at the end of the decade.” I’m glad I didn’t take that as a bet because with the way things are playing out I think there’s a solid chance I would lose! I don’t think William will ever see the crown himself and maybe that’s for the best. I don’t think he actually wants it. He certainly seems unwilling to put in the work.

    • samipup says:

What would happen to all their funding, the Duchy money, aside from what is individually owned? Or is that money considered owned by them vs owned by the POW or the King, the occupant? If the title goes does the money go to the people?

  9. Giddy says:

It seems that the only thing that W&K have energy for is to claim yet another palatial estate. They want all the many benefits of being royal, but none of the responsibilities. I hope Charles has a long and healthy life, because William will be an angry, lazy disaster.

  10. Someone pinched my user name says:

He can’t say much about Andrew, because he knows about another Uncle problem closer to his own nest. ‘Fresh young girls, Brazilian’, was it UG? I’m sure Mr Murdoch will still have the tapes.

  11. YankeeDoodles says:

William is who Trump would have been, had he been born a few decades later, in his mother’s native Scotland (Trump, that is, he’s a child as well as a husband of immigrants, go figure) & been treated like Little Lord Fauntleroy instead of being sent to military school (as Trump was) …Trump is just better at covering his vindictive, entitled, warped soul with a layer of superficial bonhomie. William can’t even fake that much relatability. Every time he tries putting on the matey-mate persona, it falls horribly flat, and just comes across as clueless and tone deaf. Like when he told an actress in a film about rape that she must have enjoyed the material, or when he tells a woman that her homemade cupcakes are awful, in a live video, whilst seated next to her son, or when he stuck his finger in Meghan’s face to lecture her about British manners. I mean. GMAFB. He’s repellent and odious in waves. Diana would be horrified.

    • HuffnPuff says:

I agree. W doesn’t know how to relate to others and he is terrible at reading the room. You shouldn’t make fun of a gift from someone especially a homemade one if you don’t know the person. I’m sure that’s how he is around people he knows but he should have learned a long time ago how to keep that under wraps in public. He’s also incurious and lazy so he shows up unprepared to his own events. He’s the PoW and doesn’t speak Welsh. Didn’t even want an investiture because he knew he couldn’t measure up to his dad.

  12. Hypocrisy says:

I do like that they seem to be keeping the focus on the BRF leftovers especially on Chuck and Willy. I am hoping they keep it up.

  13. Eurydice says:

Haven’t we been saying this here for years? William makes his disinterest in the monarchy evident every time he opens his mouth or leaves the house. No preparation, no follow-through, hopping from one “cause” to another, demonstrably incompetent with an ungovernable temper. His only two passions in life are football and hating Harry.

    • Unblinkered says:

@Eurydice- exactly. His disinterest couldn’t be clearer: condescending and unauthentic, impatient as evidenced by the rapid eye blinking that soon starts when he has to appear interested in someone or something. And he’s on £23m a year?
      FAIL.

    • kirk says:

Re: “hating Harry” – after finding out that the bulk of the bo!!ocks, BS, crap and sh!te intended for Harry (and Meghan) originated at KP, I’m thinking the unintended, but desirable, consequence for BRFCo was that Andy was given a pass for a lot longer than he would have in other circumstances.

  14. Joanne says:

The monarchy was a respected institution under the Queen
Unfortunately, it should have ended when she died
The respect and the work ethic is no longer there
Ribbon cutting and ‘appearances’ with jazz hands and open mouth smiles aren’t worth the massive amounts of money they are paid..and how many homes/houses/palaces?
    So much waste

  15. YankeeDoodles says:

I remember visiting Windsor Castle once, maybe 18 years ago? When they were open for ticket holders, and in the main foyer was a floor-to-ceiling photograph that had been mounted to a wall, that faced everyone entering, picturing the late Queen, Princess Anne, and Zara Phillips, all of them on horseback, in a row, smiling, in the sun. And it was about the most pointed counterfactual unstated argument I had ever seen. I quite literally caught my breath and then exhaled. She knew. The late Queen. She knew the men in her family were not going to keep the show on the road. The women? Even at their lowest ebb, Diana in the grip of postpartum stress and bulimia with a cheating husband, out worked her own son at half his age.

  16. Mel says:

I don’t think the big concern is his being lazy, I think the big concern is that he’s done a lot of
“things”, his behavior is a little off and they won’t be able to keep it quiet anymore.

    • Lady Digby says:

@Mel agreed 💯 Will and Andrew are somewhat similar ( apart from depravity) in terms of arrogance, stupidity and entitlement and an inability to learn and take heed of others. I suspect that in addition to laziness Wilbur can’t be exposed to the public on a full time schedule due to his behaviourly problems. The Firm know and have concealed as much as possible as they could about both men but certain obvious flaws have been an open secret for decades.

      • First comment says:

Exactly! William and Andrew have a lot in common that’s why they are pretty close no matter what the narrative is now. I can’t stop seeing William laughing with his uncle during the memorial service of a relative back in autumn. They shared some kind of joke but the press narrative was that William couldn’t stand him. Believe what we say and not what you see in your own eyes.

  17. phlyfiremama says:

    Abolish ALL monarchy’s.

  18. Tessa says:

Scooter made sure uncle Andrew got on that plane to Balmoral when the queen died. And played happy families with Andrew. I don’t believe he was outraged abou t andrew

    • Lady Digby says:

Agreed 💯@Tessa Wilbur and wife have been instructed to get with the program and work a lot more from now on . He’s outraged at being told to work more. He’s always incandescent about something but he’ll be blaming Andrew and gran and dad for today’s mess which threatens his comfort.

    • Nic919 says:

This is why William can never be believed about his claims he is mad at Andrew. He made sure to exclude his own brother in 2022, after the settlement to virginia Giuffre, and give uncle Andy a ride.

Harry even confirmed how William ignored all his texts so we know this was intentional.

    • Jais says:

Exactly. The idea that William has been so furious over Andrew is a lie. He’s been obsessed with Harry and Meghan while happily including Andrew in plane and car rides.

    • Amy Bee says:

@Tessa: I agree. You would think that if truly felt animosity towards Andrew that he would have been left Andrew in Windsor to find his own way to Balmoral as well.

  19. Magdalena says:

“Which he could not contain when Andrew sidled up to him at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral on the steps of Westminster Cathedral. His face seemed contorted with anger. ”

This is SUCH a blatant lie. William was actually sharing in the joke with Andrew. He put his hand up to his face to hide his smirk at what Andrew was saying to him, and he was responding to his uncle behind his hand while pretending to scratch his nose, mindful of the fact that the cameras were on him. Then he got his minions to spin this as “anger” that Andrew had the temerity to speak to him. This must have been Jason’s idea? Believe what WE tell you, not what you saw with your own eyes? Shameless.

  20. paintybox says:

Unfortunately for William even his father has more charisma than he does. But William’s entitlement is through the roof – he thought nothing of using and abusing his brother and sister-in-law and subsequently leading the campaign to try to ruin Meghan’s entire life. Lazy and timid, meh – he’s f*ing evil.

  21. Lady Digby says:

I can’t believe articles are being written stating Chuck should step aside as king to let iron man Wilbur deal with the Andrew debacle!! Wilbur isn’t ready for primetime and would keel over if he became King today. Yes he’s wrathful and furious that adults like gran and dad have catered to Andrew without examining the mote in his own eye. Gran and dad also were aware that Will was struggling with responsibility and commitment to a life of service but it was easier to let it slide given his filthy temper. Both created and enabled monsters of entitlement in Andrew and William.

  22. Lady Digby says:

Feminegra also discussed the Amanda Platell J’accusse article on Will The Reluctant Royal as follows: The Wales household often defends its lighter calendar by emphasizing “impact” over “volume.” Yet monarchy has always relied on visibility. Charles understood that as Prince of Wales, crisscrossing the globe to build networks, soft power and relevance. He treated the role as an apprenticeship. William appears to treat it as optional.

The irony is that some of William’s loudest tabloid allies push a competing narrative between the monarch and heir. Commentators such as Tom Sykes have floated the idea that Andrew’s arrest proves Charles should hand power to his heir, even suggesting a kind of informal diarchy. That argument collapses under the weight of the engagement statistics. A man reluctant to match even the baseline workload of his predecessors hardly looks eager for expanded authority.

William and Kate remain among the most protected modern royals in history. For years, criticism of their work rate triggered accusations of unfairness. Now, even traditionally sympathetic voices question the imbalance. If Charles could sustain more than 500 engagements during illness, and if Anne can still outpace much younger royals, the comparison is unavoidable.

Perhaps the press is finally acknowledging what it once ignored. A future monarch who speaks of global leadership cannot remain largely domestic and intermittent. If William and Kate seem comfortable with light schedules, it is because the system has long rewarded it. Charles built stature through relentless travel, but he also upheld a structure that confuses activity with reform.

    • Eurydice says:

I think the “impact” over “volume” argument would have more weight if there was some actual impact to back up all the words. The thing is that being king is impactful enough – he’s the head of state, he’s supposed to care about all the people, not just the issues that interest him. And the only way to show that caring is to go out and be visible.

As for reform, I don’t know how one can reform a system that’s based on heredity – you’re either born into it or you’re not. But they could reform the way they behave – treating and paying their employees properly, not briefing about each other to the press, not accepting bags of cash from potentates, not condoning criminal behavior…or maybe this is too much for them…

  23. CM says:

This entire article is most critical piece of W&K i’ve seen in a long time out of the DM– but the most refreshing part of it was that they left Harry and Meghan out of it. Amen and hallelujah.

  24. CM says:

This entire article is the most critical piece of W&K I’ve seen in a long time out of the DM, but the most refreshing part was that they left Harry and Meghan out of it. Amen and hallelujah.

  25. Lady Digby says:

Someone on twitter reacted to Amanda Platell ‘s evisceration of Wilbur by pointing out that he has all of Andrews personality problems multiplied. Plus a filthy temper that makes the King afraid of him and that he’d like to dump Kate, but she recorded him, so he can’t!!! Underneath another comments that Brits don’t like him as he’s not a patch on his mother!
Sorry RR but many of us can see that Andrew and Wilbur are cheeks belonging to the same royal arse!!

  26. Amy Bee says:

This piece was really written by the DM editor. The press are using this situation to demand that William and Kate do more. It would seem that KP is listening given the Waleses “worked” this weekend.

    • Lady Digby says:

Or did the actual king, his boss and dad laid down the law that they BOTH had to work this weekend to steady the ship? Although the Fail are their fanbase and they’ve been very disenchanted with the heir since 2024. They are proudly nationalistic and want to be able to boast about the heir being the brightest and the best so they are chiding him to do a lot better.

    • jais says:

We’ll see. I’m just skeptical that the Wales will ever be able to maintain a sustained work effort. They’re about to be knackered and in tears as they try to step it up until the next vacay. There’s also a good chance that they will be heckled and they come across as too fragile for that. So a bunch of embargoed and siloed events that will have them on edge bc it might mean more than 1 or 2 days of work.

  27. QuiteContrary says:

I’m so glad they’re finally focusing on William’s “pitifully few” engagements. But it’s a self-serving argument for the rota — they need something to cover.

This should keep William awake at night. Sooner or later, if he and Kate don’t give them content, the rota is going to spill the beans on what Willy’s really like.

  28. Linney says:

Nice to see someone calling William out on his useless, idle life. But to say he was so furious with Andrew on the church steps? Give me a break. The clenched jaw look is a Prince Scooter mainstay.

  29. Fishface says:

The tea leaves tell me that he is going to abdicate when shove comes to push – will be pensioned off and Harry and Meghan will return to the UK to be regent until George comes of age.
