On Friday, the Times of London published a revolting excerpt from royalist Tom Bower’s latest screed against the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. That’s right, after his previous anti-Sussex book sold literally dozens of copies, Bower has written another one, partially regurgitating all of the previous lies he’s told and adding lots of updated lies. Last year, Bower traveled to Canada for the Invictus Games in Vancouver and Whistler. As far as I know, he wasn’t there as official press covering the event. He likely paid on his own dime to go there and manufacture lies about Harry and Meghan and the games themselves. In the Times’ excerpt of his book, Bower rants on and on about how Meghan posted behind-the-scenes photos and videos from Invictus onto her Instagram (he was particularly aggrieved by that). Then Bower decided to repeatedly insinuate that Invictus competitors are perhaps faking it because some of them could walk and/or they had all of their limbs.
On February 8, 2025, Katy Perry performed for 30,000 ecstatic fans at BC Place. Before her appearance, about 500 competitors from 23 countries had paraded across the venue, preceded and followed by 80 Canadian navy bandsmen and 90 Highland pipers. Few of the cheering audience noticed that 97 per cent of the competitors were walking. Only a handful of the sportsmen were pushed in wheelchairs. Hardly any were limbless. The fans had come to see Katy Perry. For them, the games was a music spectacular, not a bond between the nation and its armed forces.
… At the opening wheelchair basketball match between Nigeria and the United States at the Vancouver Convention Centre, the mood was sullen. Merely 43 ticket-buying spectators sat morosely together in a hall fitted with seats for more than 2,000 people. On the other side of the court, about 100 people brought in by the organisers were corralled to surround the Sussexes when they eventually arrived. The edited TV pictures would suggest that the hall was full.
…In an uncanny silence, the eight-man Nigerian scratch squad wheeled themselves onto the court. They faced 22 professionally trained Americans. While two men in the Nigerian team had lost a leg, none of the Americans were limbless. All were apparently suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Throughout the game, there was barely a murmur from the spectators. Halfway through the match, the Sussexes slipped into their seats.
Harry and Meghan’s presence at the game was the day’s media photo opportunity. Nine zoom lenses focused on the Sussexes’ tightly controlled narrative. The couple clapped silently. Meghan stared lovingly at Harry and the prince watched the slow match intently. Nearby, a vetted TV station recorded them on a tight lens. Ten minutes after their arrival, the whistle blew. The Americans had trounced the Nigerians 24-0. There were no cheers. The American team wheeled themselves off the court into a secluded area and effortlessly they all got up and walked away. None of them appeared to be physically injured.
The repetition of “none of them appeared to be physically injured” and “none of the Americans were limbless” and “hardly any were limbless…” Like, anyone paying any f–king attention to Invictus knows that wounded warriors come in all shapes, all sizes and all different kinds of physical and psychological damage. While I know many people didn’t watch Heart of Invictus, it showcased the wide variety of Invictus competitors and what they were dealing with both with visible and invisible injuries. PTSD is no f–king joke, and the psychological wounds of war have ripped apart lives, families and communities. You also don’t have to lose a limb to be physically injured. So, after the Times published this absolute f–king horsesh-t, Invictus’s spokesperson issued a statement:
Following criticism of the Games in the excerpt, a spokesperson for the Invictus Games Foundation also pushed back.
“It is disappointing to see The Times give prominence to commentary that appears driven by a long-established agenda rather than a genuine understanding of the Invictus Games and the community it supports,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
The foundation emphasized that the Games are focused on “the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans from around the world,” adding that attempts to question competitors’ legitimacy or minimize conditions like PTSD are “deeply disrespectful to the men and women the Games were created for.”
“The focus should remain where it belongs — on the courage, recovery and camaraderie of those who have served,” the statement continued.
PEOPLE understands that the criticism of the Games in the excerpt has also drawn backlash from members of the Invictus community, including former competitors and supporters who say the portrayal misunderstands the purpose of the event, which was founded to support veterans recovering from both physical injuries and invisible wounds such as post-traumatic stress disorder.
Yes. I would support the Invictus team if they issued an even stronger statement calling Bower a lying jackass. He got everything wrong about the Vancouver/Whistler games, and people have been posting their photos and videos to show that he is just blatantly f–king lying. Beyond that, didn’t anyone at the Times stop and say “wait, it’s crazy that he’s repeatedly suggesting that Invictus competitors and attendees are paid actors??”

Oh yes the lying liar and the lies he tells. What a disgusting and disrespectful bit of tat that he wrote!! Yes injuries come in many many forms including PTSD and other mental and traumatic forms. It’s not just losing a limb and having to use a wheelchair. This complete and unhinged asshole knows nothing but lies and more lies!! Glad the spokesperson called him out on him knowing nothing!!!!
Bower has essentially claimed that the entire US basketball team cheated. Comes over here as strongly anti-American, as well as misogynistic and racist (which we’ve long been aware of). He’s such a bigot.
Good grief. There really is no level that these deranged anti-Sussex commentators won’t sink to. Apparently, Tom Bower used to be a well respected award winning investigative journalist who wrote books on such matters as corruption in football. How embarrassing that he has reduced himself to nothing more than a vile hateful peddler of tittle tattle.
He’s always been a nasty piece of work and problematic, but has definitely got much worse with age (he’s now 79). Cognitive decline and incompetent support re: research, etc? As with Levin.
It certainly sounds like cognitive decline. The newspapers need to put him out to grass, he is just making them look bad as well.
The royal beat is where journalism goes to die.
I have ptsd (cptsd) I’ve been struggling with it my entire adult life but was diagnosed in my 40’s it isn’t a joke but I often get the “well you look fine” comments when my brain is in chaos.. constantly living in a heightened state of flight or fight is exhausting because not even being home alone feels safe. The timing of bowers book will end up hopefully backfiring and leaving mud on all the leftovers along with tom bower, because this book was written and sanctioned by them to once again attract the Sussex’s to cover for the leftovers (AMW) but they didn’t expect Andy to be under arrest while he is under criminal investigation for the release.. the photos of AMW with children (breast balls) are flooding social media and tom bower dirty work for the Palaces is sure showing.
I am very sorry to hear that from you. There’s precedent for including people suffering from “invisible wounds” as competitors in USA DOD Warrior Games — which Harry freely admits is where he got idea for Invictus Games. There’s a fairly long video from 2016 Invictus Games (GWB Presidential Center) that’s a symposium on invisible wounds. I believe this link is to a shorter subset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epez9Eks3Tg
I understand that feeling too. I’ve had c-ptsd for 45 years. I still wake up bathed in sweat screaming regularly. Trauma therapy hasn’t helped so I might try emdr, which I’d never heard of till Harry discussed it. My psychologist suggested it too.
My son and I both have CPTSD, and EMDR has been very helpful for us both. Sending love.
Please. As if 30,000 people were there to see Katy Perry!
Tom Bower is incredibly offensive saying that about athletes at Invictus. I’m surprised any newspaper would publish something as offensive. There mustn’t have been any service people in Bower’s family as anyone with family who have served know that the injuries from war aren’t always visible? The only thing I can conclude is that the tabs and his book publishers don’t read what he gives them before they publish?
I suppose it’s a trivial point that the UK has one of the larger IG teams, one selected and supported by the RBL. An organization which has as its royal patron, KCIII. Since Charles has never bothered to so much as wish the UK team good luck at past IG, the Times can rightly assume he won’t bother (have the backbone) to push back on Bower’s trash. Never complain, never explain, don’t you know, and whatever diverts public attention from AMW. Thus the Times feels okay descending into the pit with the rest of the vipers and publishing whatever dreck it wants.
When I worked as a civilian employee for the Army I went to a training where there were a lot of employees who were former military members. Most were Iraq war vets & so many had TBI–traumatic brain injury. It really brought home to me the lasting consequences of war on the people who actually fight it. Oh, and not a one was in a wheelchair or was missing a limb. 🙄
And criminy, so much for the Times. They and the BBC have really lost the plot. Legacy media is truly dead.
That excerpt is disgusting and very disrespectful to the veterans. It’s clear that the British press is eager to discredit every charity that Harry is involved in. They were successful in destroying in Sentebale and now they’re going after Invictus.
Is making up 💩 about the Sussexes Tom Bower’s actual profession? Because it’s amazing to me that anyone can get paid to smear people in what used to be a reputable media outlet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And in this case, wounded veterans are collateral damage. So offensive on so many levels.
Wow. I didn’t read the excerpt about Invictus until now. This is so offensive that is hard to believe that it passed by any editor. I know they all have their hate goggles on for Harry and Meghan, and that they want them to be a distraction but do these people even for a smidgen of a second think that the people on the other side impacted by their lives may have a problem with this?
The military community, and those participating in Invictus especially are always singing Harry’s praises. This type of nonsense is not going to endear them. They aren’t going to all of a sudden believe that maybe he’s right in spite of their own personal experiences. And they’re definitely not going to be quiet about it with their own families.
They are so laser focused on we must ruin Harry and Meghan because their attention will somehow bounce back to the Royal family and make us relevant again, that they don’t seem to realize constantly insulting entire countries, organizations, professions doesn’t make people have the warm and fuzzies about you. I can only imagine what veterans in the UK think today. The Windsors already crap on Invictus and treat them like an afterthought, publishing this right before the games are going to be in your country? Just idiotic levels of self sabotage.
God I hope this isn’t the first wedge in Bulliam’s attempt to take over Invictus, after he, his buddy Iaiin Rawlinson, and liar Sophie pushed Harry out of Sentebale. Tom wrote this book with the cooperation of the Waleses, after all.
I’m so glad that Invictus’ board is pushing back and being very clear about what a slimeball Bowers is.
Hey Tom, how about criticizing William for flying Heidi Klum and Kylie Minogue into Earthshot?
They won’t mention the celebrity participants at Earthshot because no one cares. Invictus participants are constantly giving interviews and singing the praises of the Invictus community and Harry in particular. Invictus has the backing of world governments, especially the military community, and NATO. I’ve never even seen a follow-up interview with any of the Earthshot winners or anything that highlights them outside of William having his face everywhere.
I think Williams goal in the past may have been to take over invictus, but I don’t think that they think highly of him. And I think that what he tried to do and what this book is trying to do is drive a wedge in between the community and Harry. They don’t really care about you, all the attention goes to them, and other things to get into the higher-ups and Invictus.
The problem is Tom Bower is so obsessed with hatred for Harry and Meghan, Meghan especially, that he’ll insult anyone to try to ding them. So the higher ups who are probably more in the know about the background than us simple observers don’t seem to be impressed with William, and the participants and the actual veterans know exactly how much time Harry and Meghan spends with them publicized or not. So the goal is having the opposite effect from both ends.
There’s no real comparison between Sentebale and Invictus. SC was running the show at Sentebale, invictus has a large board of trustees and a huge management team. I can’t see any way peg could take it over? Also the participating countries have their own management teams.
Tom bowels belongs in the belly of hell. What a disgrace to mankind he is and to all those people who gave everything for their countries so that pieces of s le him can be free to write lies . I am glad invictus checked his lying ass
Tom Bower is so disgusting, attacking people who served their country to get to Harry and Meghan. Tom Bower never served in the armed forces, never fought on on the battlefield. Tom Bower was never in a situation where he had to shoot at people knowing that he might have injured them or even killed another human being. He never was on a battlefield where friends or colleagues around him were injured or killed. He has no idea how it is like to fight to protect his country. He not even tries to empathise with the veterans or understands what they are going through. Tom Bower is just a despicable human being.
What the what?! It’s like something the orange one would say. So offensive and disrespectful.
Deeply offensive. It was in poor taste for the Times to publish this excerpt. The IG are going to be held in the uk and this is the kind of reception the BM is giving the veterans? Shameful.
I DARE the British press to write such bullsh*t during the games in Birmingham! I DARE THEM!! Not enough missing limbs! Veterans WALKING!! Do it! I double-dog dare you! 😡
Is the press doing pre-Invictus smearing here? Unconscionable is too slight a word for what is being done by Bowers and the newspaper.
I rue the day the games were awarded to Birmingham. My worst fears are coming true. It’s my fervent wish that the decision be reversed and the games pulled. Won’t happen but I wish it would.
That book passage right there & the Times’ decision to excerpt should be enough to go to the next country on the shortlist. The Brits clearly don’t deserve the games.
Hey Brits, come get your grandpa Tom. He’s stalking a duchess and insulting veterans.
Ick.
After what they did to sentebale, I knew they’d go after invictus next. People don’t want to hear it but I won’t be surprised if Harry is forced to back away from it by the board, I don’t see Meghan going to the next one as it is. Unfortunately I think they have let things get too far with the press, allowing lies to spread. I’m glad they are finally saying something, but it could have been a stronger statement. He’s being printed in papers and on their morning shows, he is taken seriously by some people, we may know he’s a liar, but the papers still print it.
I’m wondering if this is the start of William’s attack on Invictus. Iain Rawlingson is now working for Earthshot.
I just wrote a comment about this above. Have you seen the size of invictus orgs board and their huge management team? It’s not the same as sentebale which was basically entirely run by SC at the end. What could one plant by pegs do?
I’m appalled that the Times printed this ableist nonsense that insults such a huge swath of people. All I can hope is that there is a backlash from Invictus and veterans groups as well as disability advocates.
It’s hilarious how they’re insinuating there was no crowd for Invictus after I’ve seen first hand how they fudge the crowds for the others. Years ago I went to see Charles and Camilla go to that school in Berkeley and I’d say around 25 people showed up to see them. We were to stand across the street behind a barrier, which we did. The photos in the paper the next day showed the crowd from the side lined up against the barrier making it look far larger than it actually was. It gave me a good laugh.
I cannot believe the Times printed this – DM or express, sure. But the times? Like wtf? It’s not enough for Invictus to respond. Reps from the British military community need to respond as well.
Look I work in disability law. Disabilities come in all forms – not missing a limb doesn’t mean that you’re not injured. Your hearing could be affected, you could have a bad back, knee or shoulder that is service connected. And that’s without getting into the mental diseases that many struggle with as a result of serving.
Tom Bowers isn’t just insulting Invictus, he’s insulting everyone who struggles with any type of disability. Shame on the Times for running this.
It’s owned by Rupert Murdoch so it’s now basically no better than a tabloid.
I’d like to see the British military respond, but I suspect they’ll try to avoid any controversy in crossing the king. Charles has never publicly supported the British team at Invictus. He’d rather ignore the injured veterans than risk commending Harry’s brilliant efforts.
And, more to the point, Charles has made it clear that he’s comfortable with anything horrible happening to Harry and Meghan.
Yeah I’m a firm believer in they shouldn’t respond to everything. Respond to Amanda Platell saying that Meghan is basically like Fergie now? No that’s silly, respond to them maligning the veterans of Invictus? Absolutely.
I know some people think that responding gave this guy more attention that he wouldn’t have gotten, but I don’t think that that’s true in this case. The media was looking for something, anything, to not have to report on Andrew, or the general public apathy of William and Kate. They would have beat this into the ground.
At some point not responding, and responding to everything has the same effect. Where people either tune you out, or people run with the narratives because they have no pushback. Them responding sporadically, but emphatically when they do makes the responses land so much harder.
Philip said the monarchy’s most ardent supporters will destroy them. Let them keep going, they’re halfway there.
It’s been apparent to me that the brf have no interest in the men and women who serve in the military. Their complete disregard to the UK competitors tells the story. The only thing I can ascertain from this article is that this attitude may be wider spread in the UK than I imagined. Obviously, this is more media manipulation to condition people to have negative views of the IG. Well, living in the disinformation media landscape in the US, it will be interesting to see how the military service members (past and present) will be treated by the populace.
That is the most disgusting piece of ableist, bigoted bullsh*t I’ve ever read. Absolute garbage. 😡
“Hardly any were limbless.”
How could anyone write that disgusting sentence about injured vets and not crumple into a heap with shame?
