After Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election by a slim electoral margin (she won the popular vote), I vividly remember one of the post-mortems, wherein one of Clinton’s top advisors expressed regret at not leaning into the straight-forward identity politics of “we get to vote for a woman at the top of the ticket, we could have our first woman president.” There was a reluctance to make it about the historical nature of Hillary’s candidacy and the joy/enthusiasm many women felt about voting for Hillary. We got a do-over in 2024 with Kamala Harris where there was joy and urgency all mixed together. And it still didn’t work. We’ve now spent the past seventeen months in a fascist quagmire where the political post-mortems just keep getting worse and worse. As a long-time Democrat, I don’t think the answer is “voting for the guy with Nazi tattoos” nor do I think the answer is knifing people like Joe Biden and Jim Clyburn in the back. But I’m also realistic enough to know that the next Democratic presidential candidate should probably be a white, heterosexual man. Most Democratic strategists agree.
Some top Democrats are quietly debating a fraught question: whether the party’s best bet for winning back the presidency in 2028 is to nominate a man — perhaps a straight, white, Christian man. Their fear, divulged with dismay in group chats, at cocktail parties and increasingly in public, is that parts of the electorate are too biased to support a woman or other diverse candidate for president.
Former first lady Michelle Obama fueled such talk recently, saying the U.S. is “not ready for a woman.” Democratic strategists have put it bluntly, with several saying a version of “It has to be a white guy.”
The Democratic Party takes pride in being a champion of women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community and religious minorities. Electing Barack Obama, the nation’s first Black president, was the high point for the party’s goal of boosting diversity in the executive branch. But falling short twice to President Trump — both times with women on the ticket — has left some Democratic leaders, donors and strategists deeply pessimistic about what voters will accept now.
“There is a fear — and I actually don’t think this is just a grass-tops fear, I think you’d hear it from voters, too — that a woman has now lost twice,” a national Democratic strategist told Axios. “So not discounting the hundreds of other times men have lost … but is it the right thing to nominate a woman?”
Most of these conversations have unfolded behind closed doors, but a striking number of Democrats have begun voicing their concerns more openly, exposing a larger debate within the party over electability. Michelle Obama pushed the discussion into public view in November, saying the U.S. has “got a lot of growing up to do, and there’s still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman.”
South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn told NBC the former first lady was “absolutely correct,” adding that women should keep running anyway.
The one asterisk I’ll add is that I believe Kamala Harris’s candidacy would have been successful had she not been forced into watering down her historic candidacy and if she had been able to actually run a real campaign for longer than 107 days. Another asterisk to this discussion: if Kamala runs again, I will absolutely vote for her in the Virginia primary and the general. But if she’s not running, then yes, I do think that the next Democratic candidate should be a straight white guy with rizz and a deep hatred for Nazis, Republicans and fascists.

I hate this. But I do have a feeling that the only reason Trump has been president is because some people just can’t bring themselves to vote for a woman.
Yeah, I agree. Misogyny runs deep in this country, in both men and women.
I honestly think a lot of women (especially white women) won’t vote for a woman which is even sadder somehow.
Completely agree. Trump won. Twice. Misogyny is real and Americans need to face the cold hard truth just how bad it is that misogyny got us here.
Yeah. Sadly I believe that the only way we’ll get a woman for president any time soon is if she runs as a republican. There’s a deep-seated fear of progress in this world and our patriarchal society rewards women who choose to threaten progress.
I also hate it and I also agree. The point is to win. Period. There are no moral victories like “well, she won the popular vote.” It doesn’t matter. Win. Period.
My partner has cut off his mom because she voted for T and said Kamala “wasn’t qualified” (which we all know is ignorant bs).
I will never forgive the people that voted for him. Sexism and bigotry is the root of it all.
Sadly, many women are brainwashed by their upbringing to believe Jesus wants women to be subservient to men. And they can’t vote against Jesus.
There are others who are in complete denial because the alternative — that their very own fathers, and husbands, and sons, hate women, including them — is too stressful for their psyche to accept.
Other women won’t vote for a woman because their own lives are miserable and dead-end, and they cannot bear to see other women succeed when that’s not an option for them (a lot of MAGAs, male and female, have this view and it’s why they vote against their own self-interests — because they will self-harm rather than see people they are jealous of succeed, and/or it’s “worth it” to see people they hate (women, LGBTQ, immigrants) being targeted and abused.
The saddest part is that a large portion (almost half) of Americans are so vicious that they vote out of hatred rather than any form of logic or self-interest.
If it had been like the 2020 post Covid race where people were voting by mail she 💯 would have won. She was a great candidate and as usual it’s America’s loss.
This👆! Many people do not realize that the reason Biden (and Harris; I was absolutely voting for her) got 81 million votes in 2020 was not because people are in love with white maleness. It’s because it was so easy to vote. That’s why Trump was having a coniption; the Republicans could not as easily engage in their usual chicanery with voter suppression. In 2024, we were back to voter suppression.
Right. Harris not being white wasn’t the reason there were dozens of fake bomb threats at polling centers.
I know I should feel strategic but I’m still angry so I hope there’s better people out there than me.
Michelle Obama’s stance regarding a Woman POTUS is correct…this 🤬 country isn’t ready…Kamala was a MAGNIFICENT VP for 3 years what better campaiging is that & White Supremacy STILL choose a 🤬🤬🤬 disgusting cretin …so 🤬 NO…I don’t want Kamala running again…let White Supremacy deal with White Supremacy 😡
But I think Kamala WANTS to run again and it should be her decision. She has unfinished business, is too young and fit to retire , and will tell you when asked that in every race she has ever run she has been told not to because she can’t win. She does not agree with Michelle Obama but loves her still as should we all.
Please don’t jump on me for this, but Kamala was not regarded by some lifelong Dems as the worthy candidate because of how she became the nominee without a primary.
I actually had to talk my elderly mother who is very active in her local Democratic Party into voting for her. It made no sense to me but I’ve heard this over and over from multiple Democrats.
What EMF999 said. She didn’t even get all of the delegates since some of them protested how this mess was done. Which should have been a warning sign and again the DNC and Kamala’s campaign ignored it. Not being Trump was not enough.
Do these people who think a primary is more important than the general election realize that if Joe Biden had been unable to serve any longer in 2021, 2022, or 2023, Kamala Harris would have immediately become president without either a primary or a general election? This is the craziest reason for not voting! It is literally in the US constitution that if the president is unable to serve for any reason, the vice president immediately becomes president. Her name was on the ballot in the 2020 election and again in the 2024 primary with Biden. With three months to go when Biden dropped out, who do these folks think should have taken his place? This level of ignorance about basic civics and government blows my f**king mind!
They will always find a reason.
@Brassy Rebel not disagreeing just saying what I saw on the ground in VA when this was all going on. I voted for her. I just flat out said that the messaging was terrible on this for a lot of so called Dem voters who sat home.
Democrats have been fretting about this shit forever. I remember when after 9/11, the conventional wisdom was that our nominee *had* to be a war hero. We nominated Kerry and… look how that turned out.
Biden was a nice guy and a good president, but most Democrats voted for him out of fear (“We need an older white guy who can appeal to the center”) rather than with enthusiasm, so he lacked the well of support he needed to get reelected.
Maybe Democrats should try nominating someone we really like who would do a good job, and not care about that person’s race or gender.
I agree with your conclusion. I follow a lot of political experts on Substack and they are predicting long-term disaster if the Democrats keep playing it “safe”. When you have people like Tucker Carlson and Marjorie Taylor Greene “to the left” of the establishment Dems on issues like AI regulation and foreign wars, it’s not a good sign.
One of the reasons Trump won was because he got a lot of support from young white males and Latino males who wanted to see change. Those two groups have almost completely abandoned Trump/MAGA at this point because the economy they were promised was not delivered (and in its place, one even worse). Not to mention the broken promise of no more wars. These people will not automatically vote for the Democratic nominee though — they need someone different and promising change (anti-establishment). Hopefully someone will emerge on the Democratic side that can inspire people to get off their butts and vote (like Obama did).
Dems need to reckon with the fact that many DEMS voted for Biden because they thought a white guy was the safest bet. I phone banked for my senator, Elizabeth Warren, in the 2020 primary and I cannot tell you how many people said to me “I love her but a woman can’t win”.
At some point it just becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Women can only win if we vote for them but a large faction of Americans simply won’t.
This. I had the same experience when I knocked on doors for Warren.
There will never be the “right” time to vote for a woman, so we just need to keep voting for and supporting women we think are good for our country. We need to stop fretting whether our candidate checks all the right boxes.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Axios sources were the same Democrats who have been making bad decisions for the party since forever.
Warren had dropped out of the race by the time it came for my state’s primary and I cried leaving the polling place because I couldn’t vote for her.
The only piece of political swag that I have is a sweatshirt from her campaign and I still wear it. I had it on in Target once like a year later and two women who walked by said, “Warren forever!”
@Kitten I agree it is a self fulfilling prophecy and its frustrating.
but also to point out – which adds to the frustration – hillary did win more of the popular vote than trump. more people wanted her to be president than Trump. They just didn’t live in the right states. So much of a consideration should it be how someone would do in a state like north carolina?
But also again (sorry my thoughts are rambling lol) – in 2007/2008 I wasn’t sure a Black man could win in the states Obama won. And he won twice obviously.
I just think many times we let the Rs control the narrative around our candidate too much. like the Swift boat thing for Kerry should never have been an issue considering Bush’s military service. It wasn’t like he was running against Powell..
@ KW the obsession with having the “perfect” candidate is what will ruin us in the end.
@ Kirsten–That’s awesome that those women gave a shout-out lol. Warren had such a transformative platform that didn’t always resonate with the median voter but man would she have made one helluva president.
@Becks1–“I just think many times we let the Rs control the narrative around our candidate too much.” This. We also seem to obsess over getting this mythical Trump voter if we just focus on *affordability* or _____ message enough. Those people are not gettable because they’re in a cult and they quite literally do not care about anything except Trump. Getting independents, first time voters, the youth vote (especially young men) would be enough to win again.
Alas, I know who I think would make a good Dem president but I honestly have no idea who could win at this point. Trump winning again was a powerful reminder that I simply do not understand half of this country’s voting populous.
@Kitten that’s exactly my internal debate – who would be a good president vs who could win. I know we can’t hyperfocus on the latter but at the same time……who I think would be good is not necessarily who would win in a national election.
and you’re right we need to stop worrying about the trump voters. Sure, there are some we can swing, and that’s fine if that happens. But there’s a lot more who are Dem who stayed home in 2024 for “reasons” that we can focus on.
Kirsten, my only political-ish shirt is also Warren inspired. It’s a Raygun tshirt that says, “Nevertheless, She Persisted” in all caps.
White dudes got us into this, white dudes are keeping us here; a white dude is not going to get us out of this. If the democrats nominate a white dude, it’s going to be to keep the status quo. Someone called the democrats America’s HR and it makes so much sense. If white people will only vote for a white male candidate, then what’s the point of trying to save what’s left of America?
This!!!
Agreed! This country has a very long way to go. IMO at the end of the day a large number of white people continue to believe that they should be the face of leadership for the many reasons we know well. There are also a lot of non-white people who feel the same way mostly because they hate whomever although that’s a different rode to go down.
Completely agree. I think the problem with Democrats is that we don’t Lien in far enough. You say you want a woman? Give them to… President and vice president. Hell, make the speaker of the house of President too all female.
At the end of the day, my dream ticket for 2028 is Governor Whitmer from Michigan at the top of the ticket and Senator Warnock as VP. It can happen. And if I have to vote for Newsom, I will do so holding my nose and closing my eyes… Please don’t make me.
Hillary Clinton won the popular vote (and that really should be enough, screw the Electoral College!). But you will never convince me that Kamala Harris lost EVERY single one of the seven swing states by JUST enough to avoid an automatic recount. Her victory was stolen from her. And from us.
Next door neighbour here: from the outside looking in, I’m 100% w/you @Irving.
Yeah, I think there’s more to Elon’s election activities.
Exactly. There needs to be an investigation of the 2024 elections. Trump has been dropping hints left and right that they used the voting machines to suppress votes. Why aren’t Americans asking for answers?? When the Republicans have been attacking the legitimacy of the 2020 elections constantly (and they have been asking for several recounts without grounds) why are the Democrats just accepting the 2024 elections with ZERO questions asked? For me it almost looks like an arrangement between the two parties.
THIS THIS THIS 100% THIS. I cried my eyes out that night, but I can’t believe she lost by just enough not to trigger recounts in the swing states. Something was wrong.
@Irving
I totally agree. The Felon lost his party the mid-terms in 2018, the White House in 2020, there was no red wave in 2022 and months of stories about even more criminal behavior. I thought even more people hated him than ever. Something was way off with those swing states.
I wish they’d come up with a platform first before worrying what the candidate’s face will look like.
The candidate forms the platform.
I wish that was true but for the national election the DNC, DC lobbyists, donors and the consulting class are the ones that create the platform. If you want someone that’s going to bring their own platform and ideas to the race you have to go with either a political outsider or a firebrand like AOC.
I will just say one thing, it’s not the DNC. They follow what the national party leaders want to do. But I am so sick of them all talking about we need to stop focusing on the coastal elites. They sound like Republicans. Slotkin and Kloubacher are on my last nerves with this. Don’t get me started on Rahm!
Exactly! It’s so ridiculous that the Democratic Party thinks they can’t articulate the Party’s core beliefs in a simple statement before they write a platform, which of course, must be preceded by electing a candidate. Nuts! Whereas Republicans, the Party Without Principles, isn’t so constrained — they’re just fine with ad hoc whatever statements to get the vote at the moment, even if it conflicts with their Project 2025 type goals (tax cuts for the rich, cut biz regs, co-opt religious right for voting strength). Democratic Party should put together an elevator pitch type statement (Articles of Faith / Core Beliefs), that encapsulates the main orientation of the party regardless of differences between candidates. Something that can be boiled down to a few ideas that would be consistent over all candidates and elections.
I will vote for whoever will win as a Democrat.
Me too, and then demand the best they’re capable of.
That’s how I feel. Who will win? So long as that person is a reasonably good candidate, I will vote for that person. I want the Supreme Court back.
I don’t agree with every little thing the Democrats embrace and that’s fine. I don’t have to fall in love with the candidate. Biden was a straight white man who was from the Silent Generation and governed progressively. It doesn’t matter to me what he looked like. Harris was a good candidate too. Yes, it would have been great to have a woman President. I hope it happens in my lifetime. But what matters most is having one who will protect the rights of women and everyone else.
I just want a Democrat to win.
I will never say anything as stupid as there is no sexism or racism factoring in our political campaigns. But there is no evidence that these were decisive factors in either 2016 or 2024. Hillary was going for a third Democratic term in a row, and that rarely happens. But she almost succeeded. And Kamala with a very abbreviated time frame, was trying to overcome the post COVID anger and anxiety which was a world phenomenon. And she got 75 million votes with the wind in her face. Only she and Biden and Trump in 2024 have received more votes.
There are many factors in every election. It doesn’t make sense to reduce a complicated electoral environment to race and gender. In politics, there is something called thermostatic reaction. 2024 was a change election because the voters wanted change from their post-Covid troubles. Stupidly they believed Trump could deliver low inflation because inflation was low in his first term. In 2028, because Trump has delivered disaster after disaster, we will have another thermostatic reaction and another change election. A candidate who delivered 75 million votes (with voter suppression) and in a very difficult political environment will be well positioned to deliver millions more in 2028. And it wasn’t a straight white man who did that. But the biggest hurdle will be making sure that the election is free and fair, not the gender and race of the candidate.
In addition, most voters who will never vote for a Black woman would never vote for any Democrat under any circumstances. So let’s not be ruled by them.
Because the results showed it was. 92 percent of Black women voted for Kamala. Guess how many white men and women did. If white women and men had voted for her like they did Biden/Harris this would have been moot.
Obama won but didn’t win white men and women. He just won more of them than when we lose. It’s not like Dems have never won a presidential election. White people will continue to be racist af. They’ve been voting Republican consistently since the Civil Rights Act passed. The drop off in 2024 was with minority males, especially Hispanic males who heavily consumed mis and disinformation.
Hispanic voters were divided in 2024, a major shift from 2020 and 2016. In 2020, Joe Biden won Hispanic voters by 25 percentage points, and Hispanic voters supported Hillary Clinton by an even wider margin in 2016. But Trump drew nearly even with Kamala Harris among Hispanic voters, losing among them by only 3 points.
There’s a reason the DNC, the party apparatus, doesn’t want the post mortem about the 2024 campaign to come out, and it’s because it shows the bigger issue was complacency about Gaza, not her gender. The people that gender bother the most aren’t voting democrat anyway. Misogynoir does have a huge impact, and I think some votes were tinkered with.
I think all this hand waving about needing a white guy is cover for wanting to keep aipac money and donors and squash any progressive movement. And if they are able to do that, Tucker Carlson will win in ‘28.
Watching the I’ve Had It podcast has been so cathartic for me, the ladies truly understand the Christian nationalist threat and psyche, which media gets very wrong. They’re also banging the drum on we need a candidate with moral clarity, which is the Nazi hating part. We gotta get out of a hole that’s been dug by democrats for 20 years (abandoning down party races and entire states), and overcome traps the gop has been building for 50+ years.
A lot of people here are really believing the DNC this and that. There’s been tons of actual research into the voting for 2024.
Moral clarity has to include calling out anti-semitism when we find it. And there is plenty of it on the left. It doesn’t matter which side is spewing it.
The left wing of the party has alienated Jewish voters way more than they realize. Many who have voted Democrat their whole lives, who have donated money and been active as voters, will not come back to the party if they don’t distance themselves from the Hasan Piker wing of the party. Left wing anti-semitism is every bit as bad as right wing anti-semitism.
Criticizing Israel is not anti-semitic. Not recognizing our ally’s right to exist as a sovereign nation with borders absolutely is anti-semitic.
BrassyRebel, while there’s some truth to what you’re saying, there absolutely some sexism and racism at play during that election season. Between the white bro Democratic movers and shakers, tastemakers cranky that a capable experienced sitting VPOTOS was the candidate and the 20-30 something dudes that didn’t want to vote for ‘the girl’ (I personally heard more than one call her that while disparaging her .., they’d just blink and stare if I pointed out they were talking about a 50-something woman who was VP)
Fox, right wing media leaned on that heavily and mainstream media joined in with not-really that subtle commentary, harping on small thorns, minimizing the big picture while ignoring the giant plank of Trump and Project 2025’s, J6 and GOP anti-democracy actions and the threat to democracy.
Can anyone explain why the Republicans can nominate any old, racist, low intellect white guy and get him elected? Meanwhile my party undertakes forensic analysis to choose a candidate that can’t bring it home? Hilary is right, this Country has a lot of growing up to do. My stomach is churning and we’ve got 2 years to go.
There’s a cult-like mentality around Trump. It’s inexplicable, but he’s the one that this weird cult gravitates towards.. I don’t think the other Republicans (young or old) are able to inspire that same devotion.
Because old, racist, low intellect white guys are the default demographic in our society. Also, Democrats never hesitate to attack their own party while Republicans rarely even hint at criticism of their party and leaders. They are literally committing political suicide by sticking with Trump right now.
This country is racist and sexist full stop. It broke people’s brains badly when Obama won not once and twice. The only reason why Kamala became VP was because a white man was the President. People freaked out when Biden had surgery and she was President technically for like a dang hour. Media wrote exhaustive articles about it. Trump falls asleep all the time! There’s obviously something medical going on with him since his hands and ankles are a hot mess (I assume heart failure). And no one except us normies care.
I hate the Democrat party for a lot of reasons, but one of them was that they wanted to and tried to push not just Biden out in 2024 but also Kamala. They wanted Gavin Newsom. And that swarmy POS just hid enough to be like this is not me doing this. I don’t want to vote for Mark Warner who if Biden is too old to run, so are you sir and there’s tons of Dems that listened to terrible political consultants and wrecked the party in 2024. And they are about to wreck it again. Let the primary process play out how it will. Quit acting like people have no say in who represents them. I refuse to donate or get into this again with so called allies. All I will say is this, Newsom would be a terrible President. He does not give two craps about trans people and it’s more of the same concerning Black people. This new group Third Way is very dismissive of the base (Black people) and keep talking about the real Americans which apparently if I don’t live in the country I am not one. The keep chasing the rural white vote and I am just fed up with everyone.
It’s Democratic Party …. not Democrat Party.
I don’t care.
“democrat party” is parroting Trump propaganda.
My point exactly, Tiffany.
I loathe that “Democrat Party” crap. It’s grammatically wrong, for starters.
If it was a typo, fine, but then say it was a typo.
Given what the rethugs have been doing for decades? No, the rethugs are not a party of ‘democracy’.
The Democratic party is the party that supports democracy.
Great post ChillinginDC and yes it’s all so frustrating.
Idk why the US is not *ready* for a female President, I hate it, because I think the US people would be better served by a Democratic woman POTUS.
But I know it’s not going to happen … for a while
It does give me a teeny wobble that I am not seeing 1 single strong Democrat nominee yet
There are certainly strong contenders in the mix, but I feel like by this stage, there should be 3 to 5 definite front runners for the DNC nomination
But … that’s JMO, I’ve had occasion to think the Democrats are not strong at succession planning, again, that is MHO ✌🏻
No, you’re absolutely right. All the forces that are coming to a head right now, aren’t new. They’ve been there forever and in particular the past fifty years. The Republicans right the Powell Memo and Project 2025, the Democrats dither and don’t think beyond the next election.
A sad state of affairs.
This country is still full of a lot of sexiest and racist people. They aren’t ready to vote for a woman, a homosexual or anything other than a white Christian man. Sad but true.
It’s time to burn it ALL down. The whole system.
The rethugs are burning the whole system down. How’s that working out?
The only way to claw back a democracy is to vote for any Democrat who runs for anything. School board, sheriff, town council, state reps, Congress, all of it.
Not rethugs, NOT unicorns, NOT third party. Democratic Party all up and down any ballot.
If there had been a primary in 2024, I think it’s possible Kamala might have lost. I don’t remember her doing well in the 2020 primary. But I think she might have lost because she didn’t have a well-organized team. That said, when she went up
against Trump, she should have won because he’s incompetent and everything else that’s even worse.
She should run again if she wants to, but she’ll have to face a bunch of other contenders within her own party who are most likely not incompetent. And she could lose because voters might want someone else (maybe even another woman who is just as strong and competent).
She very well might have lost. I like Kamala Harris a lot. I voted for her with enthusiasm. But she lost the 2020 primary fair and square. There is nothing to suggest she would have run away with it in 2024, not even as a the sitting Veep.
We will have a primary in 2028. I hope we settle on someone who can win and will govern well.
I want Democrats to be ruthless this time. Choose a candidate who’s going to be ruthless, too. I think that probably means a white guy — and I’ll just hope to live long enough to vote for AOC when it’s her time.
But I’ll be honest: I’ll vote for a ham sandwich if it has D after its name. Because this nightmare has to end. Our democracy has to be restored.
And there can’t be any nonsense about the Ds being as bad as the Rs, because look where that crap has gotten us.
I agree 100%. We are dealing with a cult. We can not be complacent snd let MAGA further destroy this country.
I’m so tired of the mainstream dems.
It’s time for a progressive candidiate.
A Progressive will lose.
I am really fed up with the analysts. Biden won the nomination over younger candidates the analysts preferred in 2020 because Clyburn got huge numbers in the southern states to vote for him in the primaries on Super Tuesday. The voters decided. Let the candidates make their cases and let the primaries decide and then make sure everyone gets out to vote in the general. As it looks now, the strongest candidates are Kamala and Pete Buttigieg, neither of whom meets the straight, white guy qualification.
What you said. This is something I don’t care about. I am in VA and need to vote again for like the 5th time this year. I show up and vote. But I am tired of we need a young white guy narrative crap this party keeps doing. Biden won in 2020 because no one wanted to deal with Trump. He beat everyone in the primary (including Harris). And everyone went negative on him.
Harris’s one flaw was when the freaking voters lost if over Biden stepping down and she was the nominee. Trump and the media ran with our votes were stolen and a ton of white people were in their feelings about it. I saw it live at several meetings when we were doing knocking on doors to vote. I am in VA, I went to previously homes that voted Democratic in 2020, not one of them were voting for Kamala and the Fairfax County Dems did nothing about that. They said, just keep telling them her policies. It was maddening. Myself and other Black women told them you have to speak to the fact people feel like their votes got stolen. Responses were no we don’t, it said Biden/Harris so technically they voted for Harris. Not for President though.
Oh, wow! Thank you for the update. As a Virginia/Fairfax County resident, it is depressing as hell to read what you wrote about the county Democratic Party apparatus, but it is not surprising.
Fairfax county Dems suck….And there’s a whole sexual assault investigation happening that occurred at one of the schools they better hope does not blow up enough that the GOP takes it to run and uses that to push back against the 10-1 map. I was never so frustrated in my life walking on doors and going back, telling them what people said and the response was okay just go back again…..to get screamed at some more?
Sorry, what debate? It needs to be a man, minimum. You might get away with a black or Hispanic man, but you’d be best off with a white passing man. The 2024 election should’ve been a wake up call for everyone about the misogyny and racism problem in this country, but the main emphasis should be on the former.
But my real question is…does anybody actually believe an election will fix this now? Because I’m certainly past the point of thinking this can be fixed easily. And given the SAVE Act making it through the chambers, they certainly want to make sure we can’t.
I can’t think of any prominent females who could win. We are in an especially toxic terrible time in America and it’s no time for trying things…
No one would have predicted Obama could win until he did.
It doesn’t have to be the perfect woman, but the right woman for the moment.
I think Obama had momentum around him when he gave his famous speech in 2004. I think you could predict he might win, because he is unusually charismatic and a once-in-generation politician, so much so that Trump has been jealous of him, even before becoming President. to a weird degree.
I feel like the conclusion that we have to go back to straight white Christian man is regressive, wrong, and probably being pushed by one of them. If we had a woman candidate who had the full, united democratic and progressive machines behind her I think she could win. And I’m not willing to give up on seeing a woman lead this country in my lifetime.
Here, here!
I don’t live in the US anymore but I can tell you as a person who has travelled the world, (and please note I have not visited Argentina or Israel and I hear they are on the same level as the US for anti-Blackness) the US is a top 3, and maybe number one, MOST racist, sexist places I have ever set foot in (6 continents, some 30 countries here though I have only lived in 2). Right now I am in Canada (where I am from) and yes, leaving the US feels like I left an abusive ex.
I have not experienced anything like America and it’s not close – it is vicious, violent, lose your life racism that dates back centuries – this is the very foundation of America’s wealth. It is a veritable sea of migro-aggressions and real aggressions simmering in hate with the pot boiling over. It is one of the most dangerous places for POC in the world. Other countries are issuing travel advisories for a reason. There is modern day slavery there through the prison complex system and now with actual concentration camps equipped with incinerators and gas chambers. In 2026. Please read those last 2 sentences again.
The USA is not ready, not even close, for a Black, a woman, a Muslim, or a Gay president. The US is a frigging ocean of Karens and anyone telling you the country is ready is not paying attention or being disingenuous. President Obama broke their brains – A very large number of White Americans cannot handle Black excellence. It infuriates them that they keep pushing the field goal post back and shackling Black people and they keep scoring the field goal no matter the obstacles placed in front of them. Your media calls this “economic angst” which is code for mediocrity, insecurity, racial violence, jealousy and so on. It’s this kind of “angst” that led to the Tulsa Massacre.
If the Dems nominate James Talarico and it’s actually a real election, he will win. Enough with these geriatric one foot in the grave, men. You need someone young. Someone male. Someone White. Someone who is not scared of them. Whoever the nominee is, I don’t care if it’s a dead cat, you had better show up for them. Stop demanding perfection. You are in the midst of a fascist, authoritarian regime. The world is watching. This affects all of us. You failed us in 2016 and again in 2024. Please stop saying Elon rigged it yes he did but please stop absolving the people who had a responsibility to show up and failed us all – if enough people had shown up the numbers would be too strong for the rigging to have made a difference (see the 2020 election).
Your assessment is spot on. As an American who can’t stand how we are, I seriously wish someone from another country could adopt me and get me out of here. America is built on a web of lies we tell ourselves about our superiority, and yet, so many other countries look at us like we’re insane. And they’re right. Truly, the average citizen here are simply beef cattle for the 1% to build their wealth on.
I hear you EM. About half my friends have left or are looking to leave. I don’t know if you have any Canadian ancestry but we recently relaxed the rules here to say if you have one Canadian born grandparent you are Canadian. There is also discussion of taking in American refugees if they are members of marginalized communities targeted by the regime. Some of my friends went to Portugal and one went to Thailand where the exchange is amazing – she struggled to get by in the US and now lives quite well in Thailand on a modest salary and she seems very happy and at peace.
Everyone has their breaking point and mine happened last year. Life is short. I don’t want to live anywhere where the government and a third of the citizens hate me and actively try to harm me through actions, language, policies enacted, etc. I can’t do it anymore. I feel so safe here and I don’t locate exits and sit with my back to doors. You don’t know you are doing it until you stop doing it, and not once have I woken up wondering what terrible thing the Canadian government is going to do to try to harm me today.
I believe the real targets of the immigration raids are Black people and immigrants are just the pretext and the starting point. It’s why the regime is fighting and appealing TPS status protection for the Haitian population. They want an excuse to round up Black people assault and kill them or put them in concentration camps and hide behind incompetence (we thought they were Haitian).
What a terrible, terrible place. I’m never returning. And just knowing I don’t ever have to go back brings me such a peace – it’s indescribable. We deserve better. We deserve all the good things life has to offer. We matter.
@Side Eye – is it just grandparents? I thought the new rule is that you can apply for citizenship as long as you can prove any ancestry.
You are correct Rosie! I am citing the old rules. You’re right, under the new rules you just have to prove any ancestry on either side.
Thank you! I was concerned that perhaps I misunderstood it. Appreciate you getting back to me! 🙂
No worries Rosie! Thank you for the correction.
Have you read Christopher Bouzy’s investigations into and comments about Talarico?
My understanding is it involves campaign contributions. Again, as I said, and I said this earlier (for the record I have dual citizenships, and I enthusiastically cast my vote for Harris she was an exciting competent candidate, and she wiped the floor with Ol’ Vagineck in the debate) the nominee could be a dead cat and it would have my vote.
I am renouncing US citizenship, so I am no longer participating in your elections. But I said what I said because, obviously as is evidenced by the shitshow your country is in everyone doesn’t think like me. You have racist Whites, self hating Blacks (Candace, Chilli, Kanye and Clarence types) selfish Blacks (my money my money see Snoop), Cuban Americans whose mission in life is to be White adjacent and have somehow convinced themselves they are better than all the other immigrants with the exception of Europeans, especially Black and Brown folks like Mexicans, African-Americans, Haitians, and other I got mine pull up the ladder Latinos.
Colonization, slavery has mushed American brains. And this is why you aren’t ready. You aren’t! Look at the violence perpetrated against Black men at routine traffic stops – this started during President Obama holding office because these snowflakes cannot handle Black excellence.
Every candidate has something wrong with them. All of them – pick one and everyone get behind HIM and I said him because the country hates women and I mean loathes them – half the young men are on the red pill diet the damage that has been done to these minds on the Internet by the Andrew Tates etc. it’s almost irreversible.
The requirement that the candidate be absolute perfect is gonna be the death of you. I will take campaign finance sketchiness over the anti-Christ. I will take Grover or Bert and Ernie over the anti-Christ.
It is so frustrating talking to Democrats they keep showing up with friendship bracelets to gun fights and writing opteds, trading stocks, and going on book tours. Your country is falling! I would literally vote for a festering boil on rodent over what you currently have.
Please – I say this a an outside person looking in – WHOEVER IS THE CANDIDATE – get behind them – vote blue or the world may literally cease to exist. Living upstairs from you guys is SO STRESSFUL – the joke that it’s like living above a meth lab is accurate. The man is unhinged the entire party needs removing for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and treason. And this time there has to be consequences! Real ones.
Sorry I don’t mean to shout but damn it Americans are frustrating. If your candidate happens to be a woman (you aren’t ready you aren’t!) or a POC (again, not ready too racist!) GET BEHIND THEM.
Now is the time to get all the dirt out about all of them. Weed out the chaff quickly – like Talarico and Newsome – and get behind a solid candidate or two.
@Side Eye
Excellent comment and assessment. Your sentences about incinerators and gas chambers gave me chills. Where did you see this news? I haven’t heard it reported yet but I’ve long been fearing that’s what this cabal wants.
Thank you Octopus here in Canada we saw the full report on CECOT I could not watch all of it – it was so deeply upsetting. There is a wide network right now of concentration camps that have already been build or are being built. In fact, the US holds more detainees in concentrations camps than Germany did before the start of the War. They just built one in Social Circle, GA and they modeled it after CECOT. It is widely known that once you enter CECOT you don’t leave it.
The DHS posted on its own website that it want 100 million deportations. There are only 50 million immigrants (documented or not) in the US. So this signals something that goes way beyond immigration. Remember when the president of El Salvador was at the WH and Trump said he wants most detention centers built for the “home growns” and everyone dismissed it and said oh no way he can’t do that? This plan has been in the works for a minute now.
If the plan is to deport everyone – why are they building so many concentration camps? It sounds like they plan for people to stay.
Idaho has recently passed a bill to have detention centers equipped with firing squads and gas chambers. Arkansas passed the opening of the same facility (a concentration camp) and moved to add gas chambers.
They have added incinerators and gas chambers to the camps – they call them biohazard incinerators. They are doing this through Navy contracts I believe so they can stay under the radar. There are several Instagram posts about this I don’t know if you can see them from the States.
Add to it many of these concentration centers are near railroad tracks. Railroad tracks were extremely important in nazi Germany it’s no coincidence that these camps are being built near railroad tracks. Trump said they are “carefully” choosing the location of “detention centers” and I believe the proximity to railroad tracks is no coincidence but by design. These poeple romanticize nazi Germany and want to relive it.
Almost every scholar on the topic of fascism has left the United States, including two Yale professors who wrote books on the topic – they are at the University of Toronto now.
Stephen Miller (a Jewish nazi (you can’t make this up)) who is pretty much running the US gov’t right now has stated the total number of people he’d like to see in the US is actually 100 million. So what are they doing with the other 200+ million people? Forced labor camps, gas chambers (those who can’t or are too old to work or are disabled etc), dissidents, journalists, LGTBQ, any person of colour is at risk, and I believe they want the voter rolls to start rounding up Democrats. They want to find out how everyone voted.
Trump is also appealing a federal judge’s order protecting birthright citizenship so when the SC bows down to their king, if you had one parent not a US citizen at the time of your birth it strips you of citizenship. People will probably discover in a 4 AM Truth Social rant that they are now illegal. Again the people screaming this makes Barron not a citizen are missing the point. They don’t plan to enforce the rules against White people . With them it’s always rules for thee but none for me.
This administration is preparing for ethnic cleansing, genocide, mass incarceration and murder. There is an entire center of pregnant teenagers in Dillard, TX. They went into the centers not pregnant and now they are having been raped by frozen water agents. Any pregnant teen is moved to Dillard, TX.
The damage that will be done before midterms is incomprehensible to most Americans – we see it from outside the US. This administration is lawless. I hope you can make it to midterms, but again, I don’t see what is stopping him from simply refusing to swear people in Congress or recognize the results.
@Isisrose From the depths of my Canadian heart, I am BEGGING you, stop focusing on the dirt, and just elect a Democrat.
Stop looking for someone that doesn’t have dirt. THEY ALL DO. But Democrat dirt isn’t genocidal. FFS.
Americans seem to have no idea how much your government has borked the world economy. And how much worse it’s going to be.
Did you not read my comments re. forget progressives, third party, and unicorns and vote Democrat up and down the ballot?
But while there is time, weed out the chaff like Talarico and Newsome now. Get a couple of solid candidates and unwaveringly support the one that ends up with the nomination.
I legit said nominate Andy Beshear and leave me alone. LOL.
I think there are way too many people who won’t vote for a woman, AND I question whether Elon stole the election for Trump. Trump has alluded to it enough times, and he is the master of telling us out loud how horrible he is and getting away with it anyway. That’s the most annoying part, I think there’s a pretty good chance Kamala actually won, and we’ll never flipping know.
They looked at it, not stolen, people sat home which was just embarrassing. Elon didn’t change any votes. They did throw money at people to vote though which was a whole other thing that I was like why isn’t this illegal. I think a lot of people who voted last time didn’t want to own that they either sat home, voted third party, or some switched to Trump. I think Bolts or someone did an election analysis, but they waited for like a year which I appreciated. Too many pundits were like see Trump won young voters cause of TikTok.
I think it’s possible both Hillary and Kamala won their elections in their respective years, but there was a lot of interference going on. Who knows what the real truth is unless someone reports it,
I do think it’s easier for a white man to give it back to Trump verbally since a white man doesn’t need to worry about looking a certain way.
The media doesn’t help matters. And neither does George Clooney-
I can’t even tell you how sad it makes me that we’re having this conversation in 2026. I grew up listening to “Free To Be You And Me” and believing we could do or be whatever we wanted. The past decade has been a rude, and I suppose much needed, awakening for me. I truly believed racists, homophobes and women-haters were the minority – the “few bad apples.” I thought, for the most part, we all wanted the same things but maybe disagreed on how to achieve them. The fact that this is even a consideration is infuriating and heartbreaking. When you juxtapose Harris’s convention speeches with 47’s, it is incomprehensible to me that ANYONE would willingly choose his hateful, doom and gloom schtick over her hopeful, thoughtful, intelligent, inclusive message. But then again, I do not believe whatsoever that he actually won fair and square.
You guys need to play out the primary process. It’s a great testing ground for ideas and the primary voting public is diverse enough to end up with a winning candidate.
This is enraging bulls__t. But probably correct.
Our national mommy issues run SO deep.
I suppose some will think this is tin hat thinking, but I spent a decade working advance and field staff for Dem candidates and still have friends working national campaigns. Which is to say, I am not convinced at all that Kamala lost the election. I think it was stolen. But whoever’s nominated, it has to be someone who can win by a statistical landslide if we hope to get around GOP cheating in every way they can get away with. Because Grandpa is straight up telling us they absolutely plan to cheat.
If it’s a guy, I’m floating Ossoff.
Even if it’s Kamala Harris, I’m floating Ossoff for Veep.
A a Black woman, these comments are soul crushing
I never wanted this to be true, but I knew it was true in 2024 too… and I was excoriated in the comments here for saying that skipping the primary process and basically appointing Kamala was not going to end well for us.
(I work in Democratic politics, attend DNC meetings, and knocked on doors for her, yet I was “part of the problem” for understanding that our party was making fatal decisions that would have disastrous consequences for the entire world. Sorry to go on a personal tangent for a moment, but the writing has been on the wall for a long time, and I have very little hope that the establishment is capable of self-reflection at this point. We just got a lot of leftists, including badass women of color, on the ballot here in Colorado, but it’s going to be an uphill battle to subvert the status quo even in a “blue” state.)
I remember the vitriolic comments here when commenters questioned the wisdom of Kamala being elevated to the top slot automatically after Biden dropped out. I understood the reality-based reasons why this was done. But I don’t know that having a mini-primary, as so many other people suggested, would have been any better at that late date either.
The only option that I can think of is having an open convention and all the people who wanted a shot would have campaigned among the delegates and then whoever won that contest would be the Democratic nominee. But even this would have been messy and I’m not certain that the party would have been any more united.
You were not the only one. It was a terrible idea and I really hate the podcast bros, Pelosi, and others who pushed for this mess and thought it get voters excited. Like what?
Zuckerberg probably made things worse..
With interference from tech, it’s hard to tell what people actually believe as a collective.
Ok so how do we get Mark Kelly to run… and also not fall into the usual circular firing range and purity test BS that always happens?
Kaiser,
Third asterix.
IMO the Democrats lost the moment elected male Dems refused to get their d*cks 100% in line behind a WOC. And I blame Pelosi. And AOC. And Bernie and his f*cking Bernie Bros.
Democrats and progressive demanding their own unique, million different versions of unicorns while Rethugs vote for whomever is put forward. Full stop.
Her own damn party refused to get 100% behind her no matter what. The (mostly) men of the party didn’t want her to win. Guess they’re happy living in TrumpLand, because there will never be another national election again. I doubt there will be midterms this year. At war with the globe, declare martial law, and it is over.
Dumpster fire wasn’t kidding when he said ‘you’ll never have to worry about voting again’ (paraphrased)
This! She was an excellent candidate. What a different world this would be if she were President. I hope everyone is happy with the chaos they created shouting their George Clooney and Susan Sarandon imbecility (whatabousims, both sides are the same) into their giant megaphones.
I will probably get blocked for this comment, but I’m going to say it anyway. Both female candidates were not great for different reasons. Hillary is smart. I’ll give her that. However, she chose power over her dignity and that didn’t set well with me. Kamala, never received one primary vote. Why did she get to be the nominee? Just saying. Waiting for the right woman. BTW, I didn’t vote in either presidential election.
The bar wasn’t ” not ‘not great ‘ ”
The bar was “better than Trump”
Both of them cleared that bar, clearly.
But you, and others who didn’t bother voting for whoever wasn’t Trump, go on… keep waiting for the ‘right’ one as the country burns and millions suffer and die because of Trump and his admin
(COVID, Russian war on Ukraine, Israel’s attacks on multiple countries, US attacks on Venezuela, Iran, ships on open seas, peaceful protesters in the US, entire American cities, USAID cuts, decimation of the diplomatic corps, environmental, heath and services, etc etc, around the world) .
No candidate was perfect, no campaign is perfect, none will ever be perfect. The GOP has dumped AND is STILL dumping toxic sludge in the aisles, enabled Trump and Co to fling it around the world and beyond like the oversized orange decaying toddler the he’s been for years,
All us anti-fascist people need put down the pitchforks
– which are useless when cleaning up sludge –
and focus on the big picture:
getting non-fascists, non-GOP, non-MAGAts elected up and down the ballot. Every single election.
Let everyone run and see who floats to the top.
