Cate Blanchett wore a ‘gloved’ & fringed Givenchy to a Cannes premiere: ugh?

Well, some major celebrities and models finally turned up at Cannes over the weekend. This year’s Cannes Film Festival was not very front-loaded as far as glamour and star-power, which is pretty unusual. Most years, the biggest celebrities turn out for the first few days and then the festival runs out of steam. I wonder if the festival’s sponsors are doing something different this year. Anyway, Cate Blanchett was out and about in a variety of looks. This one, at the Garance premiere, was Givenchy. It was probably her most attention-getting look (so far). The floral, the fringe, the gloves. Yes, those are giant gloves with fringe. I mean… I hate this. I hate this because I know she could do so much better.

Here’s Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, making an increasingly rare public appearance together. Alicia is still under contract with Louis Vuitton, I guess, and LV continues to give her some of their worst and/or plainest looks.

Bella Hadid is a regular at Cannes (she’s contractually obligated) and she turned up this year with her brother Anwar as her date. Her icy blue gown is Prada and it’s not great. It’s like I said with Blanchett – I know Bella can do much better than this messy prom dress.

Julianne Moore was honored at the annual Kering event at Cannes this year, and she walked the carpet for a premiere as well. Julianne’s white, feathered look is Bottega Veneta (that was from the Kering event). Her red gown is also Bottega Veneta.

I’m very surprised, but I think Cate looks fantastic.

  2. Kaaaaz says:

I don’t hate it. Cate can carry just about anything off.

Cate looks incredible, I’m sure the movement of the dress was stunning. Let’s not forget that fashion design is an art form, which means it aims to express…and of course, expression is not what basic column dresses in a solid colour do.

My God, Cate’s dress is awful! It’s probably the ugliest dress I’ve seen on this site. Perhaps Cate manifested her allegiance to Prince William and the royal family and the universe responded with this horrific dress. Good. She deserves it.

  5. Tiff says:

Cate dress looks like it has colorful hair tracks on it. Ummmm. No. I would like the dress more if that long colorful stuff was just regular fabric.

Im tired of bella practically naked all the time so i will say i like this too big dress. I really wanted to see what anwar is wearing. His dressing is usually themed.

  6. Emm1 says:

I think Alicia Vikander’s dress is stunning and beautifully cut. BUT it does cry out for a lovely statement piece of jewellery…. a colourful necklace would set it off to perfection. 🤩

  7. Sue says:

Again, I’d rather see ridiculous than boring on the Cannes red carpet.

On the lack of US A listers on the red carpet – there’s a bit more to the story. We’ve seen reporting in France that organisers wanted to center art, authors and film craftmanship this year, partly as a response to the political climate in the US – having a more subdued US presence on the red carpet for this edition, on purpose, because there’s just so much negativity in Europe associated to that country now (US audiences probably underestimate how much of a watershed moment the “let’s invade Greenland, an ally’s territory” was.)

Blanchett’s gown is somewhat reminiscent of one of the gowns at the recent Met Gala. All the rest are rather blah, so I guess she wins?
