Prince Harry ‘wants to mark Remembrance commemorations in November’

The Daily Mirror’s Russell Myers got a big update on the Sussex family’s security situation now that they’re living in the UK. Since Prince Harry’s father became king, Harry has been required to provide 28 days notice before traveling to Britain, and each time, the Met Police decided on a case-by-case basis whether Harry would receive any kind of protection. They almost always refused. Earlier this year, RAVEC even paused the Sussex family’s risk assessment without telling him. Harry and Meghan still chose to move back to the UK with their two children, knowing that they were stepping into a big security fight where nothing was guaranteed. Maybe it was a hail-Mary challenge to the establishment: are you really going to let the Sussexes go unprotected, even though they’ve moved back? The challenge is not being treated as urgent in any way. Also: Myers buried the lede, check out the last part of this story.

Prince Harry has been given fresh hope of being granted taxpayer funded security after the Home Secretary ordered a new review of the terror threat against his family. The Home Office is “actively assessing” Harry’s case again, sources revealed, after the Duke of Sussex wrote personally to Shabana Mahmood asking for a renewed assessment of his security situation, as he arrived back in Britain yesterday.
‌
A long-awaited risk assessment, carried out on the orders of the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), took place at the end of July. Harry then informed officials of his intention to travel back to the UK, where the family are said to be on an “extended” stay.

The Home Secretary has not made a decision on whether to change the Sussexes’ right to security from the ad-hoc arrangement in place since they left their royal roles in 2020. However, now the family have moved permanently to the UK, sources said “the goalposts have moved”.

One government insider said: “Officials have been asked to make a new assessment now that the family in question have chosen to reside in the UK. Any recommendations will be made in due course.”

Harry, his wife Meghan and their children Archie and Lilibet, flew into the country on a private plane from California shortly before midday on Wednesday, landing at Birmingham Airport. The family travelled on a Bombardier Global Express XRS luxury long-range business jet for the overnight flight and were seen being whisked away in two £90,0000 black Range Rovers, followed by an £80,000 black Mercedes van transporting their luggage. They were not met by any taxpayer-funded close police protection or had a police convoy – something they previously were afforded when working royals – and were supported by their own private security team.

Security experts said the private motorcade could run into thousands of pounds every time Harry and Meghan need to use them for public appearances. Former royal protection chief Dai Davies said “the bills are going to run up if this is how Harry insists on travelling around the UK now he is back”.

Harry had not been told of the Committee’s previous conclusions prior to his move back to Britain. However, a source close to the duke said he was “confident of a change in proceedings”.

Harry is understood to have been given an indication that the Home Office’s stance had “softened” and that there would be more scope for him to be afforded police protection when attending certain public events.

It is also understood that Harry has also suggested he wants to mark Remembrance commemorations in November when in the UK, as he has done every year while living in the United States since leaving his royal role in 2020. Royal sources suggest Harry would not be invited to attend commemorations at the Cenotaph in London, but he could potentially visit other sites such as the National Arboretum in Staffordshire.

[From The Daily Mirror]

I had a sense that this sh-t was coming, that Harry would start asking to appear at certain state events, especially around Remembrance (in November). Will the Sussexes be invited to the Festival of Remembrance, an event the bald-demon heir was too lazy to attend last year? Will Harry be able to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph or any of the war memorials? We’ll see. As for the larger security issues… I’m still absolutely astonished that Harry would blow up his own argument that Britain was not safe for his wife and children. I understand what he’s doing – forcing the moment to its crisis – but what a f–king gamble with Meghan, Archie and Lili’s lives and safety.

I hope he avoids the keens

    • MidnightSuperNova says:

Same. And he’s been commentating this remembrance while in America —why not since his return?

  2. Brassy Rebel says:

It’s giving Russian Roulette. What could possibly go wrong? But I repeat myself.

    • Over it says:

Brassy rebel, let me say this, I can like Harry and Meghan and still think the choice to move your children to a country that is so openly hostile in its media and a crap pot for a family who is blocking your security without you and your family getting this security before moving there, is completely idiotic

    • Ginger says:

Agreed. This is something I don’t think I will ever get over. Talk (at length) about how unsafe the UK is for your wife and kids and then bring them over there to live without the guarantee of security. WTF?

And if there is a good explanation for this move it would be nice to know.

      • Alicky says:

Until there’s a public explanation (which, in all fairness, they do not owe anyone), I’m going to have the uneasy feeling that Harry has somehow lost the plot.

      • Ginger says:

I think they do owe the public a statement on this one. They have both talked a lot (mostly Harry) about how unsafe the UK is, etc and then they move there without an explanation, they look like hypocrites (I hate to say this but that is how it looks without an explanation)

    • ChillinginDC says:

I think he’s arrogant and is thinking they won’t refuse him now. But my man, they hated your wife so much they took freaking protection from your whole family while you were in Canada! I just don’t get what he is even thinking. I would have waited until they finished this assessment, but that’s just me.

      • Jais says:

I don’t think they would have ever finished the assessment. Will this end up being a fool’s errand and the assessment will conclude that they don’t need security? That’s a real possibility. But I genuinely hope not. There is no reason for Andrew to have security while Harry and his family do not.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

The fact that Andrew has security while Harry’s young family does not is all Harry needs to know. Or should be all he needs to know. And I don’t think Meghan would ever agree to putting her kids in danger unless she felt she had no choice. And “had no choice” is a phrase that got me into trouble yesterday so I’ll see myself out now.

      • ChillinginDC says:

Since everyone is tossing out theories, mine is that Harry was told or thought that the security assessment was going to wrap up this summer. Which is why the had already enrolled the kids in schools. I still wouldn’t have done it until it was fully completed since I think he is going to get a different outcome this time. And that’s because he is going to be living in the UK full time with Meghan and the kids. I still personally would have waited until that was all done and dusted. I know they have private security (quit pocket watching RR) but Harry himself and his reps in court have said, they are not allowed to carry weapons, they don’t get threat assessments, and they don’t have the right to cordon off areas where he and Meghan are going to appear. Just curious how this will go down if RAVEC denies him again?

And yeah, Andrew has this and Harry doesn’t. And I think Harry is like well if he has, I will get it too. I honestly don’t think he’s absorbed that his family doesn’t want him around. His father took away his home. That for me would have been enough.

  3. Julie says:

I seriously doubt any official was aware of the family move in the UK. They moved knowing the probability of getting protection were from slim to none. Harry understand the system. This is not a last minute decision. They have practiced stealth traveling for the past year and it work.
I believe Harry wants to attend some commemoration as he does every year in the US. These events happen in many places in the UK and there is not need for him to attend the one in London. In fact, I doubt he will want to attend that one.

    • Crystal says:

The remembrance celebrations at the Cenotaph are the most important in the country. The Cenotaph is the focal point of it basically and symbolizes a great deal of British history and has since the period immediately after WW1. He will want to be there if he is in the UK imo.

      • Crystal says:

        (Remembrance ceremonies not celebrations*)

      • Julie says:

I do understand the importance of the London Cenotaph which was copied in many cw countries including Montreal (Canada).
Most probably he would want to be there, but Harry wouldn’t want the focus to be on him instead of the ceremony. And we all know what would happen if he was to be there.

      • Crystal says:

I think this is one of those events where even considering what you say, he would want to attend, because it’s that important. Otherwise what is the point of coming back home and immersing his kids into British culture, etc?

      • sunniside up says:

The Royal family will decide that, I expect and the answer will be no, otherwise William will throw a tantrum and refuse to go. William is the next head of the armed forces. I can imagine that the army would like Harry there, but I can’t see it happening. Harry should be happy with what ever is happening locally, there should be something. Hope I am wrong.

    • ChillinginDC says:

I hate to say t his, there’s no way Charles didn’t know. And it also shows why Alderton was kicked since I am sure he is the one that caused that BP mess to happen. Alderton hated/hates Harry and the feeling is mutual. And since the papers knew for months now that this move was happening, I highly doubt Charles didn’t know.

      • Me at home says:

ITA, Charles has known for months. William has probably known, too, thanks to Alderton telling him. It would explain all the hysterical briefings from Eden, Sykes, and others about Harry establishing a “rival royal court” (of all the ridiculous ideas).

      • Princessk says:

I agree. Charles must have known about this plan. There are lots of things we do not know. Harry and Meghan want their children to get used to the British way of life for many good reasons, I also think that there are financial reasons too.

    • Lurker says:

I believe promises were made when the Sussexes visited in July.

RAVEC would have never finished a risk assessment with Harry alone coming to visit his charities. With the move to England he forced their hands. I am positive while RAVEC still will take their sweet time, MET police agreed to share information about threats with the Sussexes private team. Which would go a long way keeping them safe.

Public events like WellChild and the Diana Award have security anyway. No one wants the public to get hurt, the venues will be secured by police. Same for everything public for the Invictus Games.

I just had to laugh about the prices of the cars, so typical. They couldn’t put a price tag on Meghan’s clothes and jewellery, so let’s grumble about the expensive cars! Which happen to be the same make and model the Wails used when they were photographed in Balmoral. Except that the Sussexes very likely rented or leased theirs with their own money, while the Wails use taxpayer’s money.

      • ChillinginDC says:

Yeah I mean Harry was surprised it got paused. So he at least though this was going to be done by this summer. Now it’s back on again, and who knows how long it’s going to take them.

      • kirk says:

I think you are probably correct that “MET police agreed to share information about threats with the Sussexes private team.” Which would abolustely be huge. They might even have agreed to share real-time monitoring.

  4. gaffney says:

I’m not sure what the end game is here but I’m leaning towards KC asking Harry to do more and Harry agreeing but neither is saying so to avoid the apocalyptic rage of the next king. Meghan and the kids will be off limits and away from all the shenanigans.

    • MFS says:

This is an interesting theory—I think I buy it. It makes sense why Harry would not offer an explanation or statement about his return if this was the reason.

      • Lady Digby says:

@Gaffney this thought has been giving me comfort because I can’t believe Harry is taking a kamikaze approach to his wife and babes security. I feel Project Protect and Service has been offered to Harry by dad and others. Wilbur has been causing real concern for the past 6 years and has never grasped the work nettle. Quite the reverse alcohol, anger addiction and violence. Heir is unsteady and incapable and will capsize the monarchy if allowed to continue unchecked. The ground is being carefully laid step by step. Keep watching!

      • Brassy Rebel says:

There is already so much bad blood between these brothers that I doubt Charles would risk triggering William by encouraging Harry to become very active and visible. And the talk of the Sussexes becoming a rival court, even if unintentionally, is a real concern. The one thing Charles might expect Harry to do is motivate William to actually do more engagements and appearances. As I have said before, one of the real problems with monarchy, especially this one, is having a spare who appears vastly more suited to the role of king than the heir.

  5. Magdalena says:

Prince Harry has marked Remembrance Day every single year even though he was not present in the UK. In fact, it had been reported that although the royals “denied” (blocked) the placement of his wreath(s), a wreath has been laid on Harry’s behalf every single year anyway. The remembrance activities are not some special royal perk despite the efforts of the deranged media vipers and parasites to claim otherwise.

I don’t think he is hankering to be included with the royals in their procession or to be present near them during the London-based version. I can fully see him participating in remembrance events in Birmingham with Invictus athletes, or even at the London event with government officials – NOT with the royals.

It doesn’t matter: the news will follow Harry wherever he is.

    • Jais says:

Yeah, the whole “it is suggested” that Harry wants to commemorate Remembrance Day is giving no shit Sherlock. He commemorates it every year? This sounds more like a common sense observation than anyone having suggested anything.

    • Margaret says:

I like the idea of him participating in events with Invictus athletes. This seems like a reasonable solution to me.

I actually hope he has not asked to be involved in the royal commemoration events because I think he should avoid the appearance of begging to be let in to their fold because staying independent denies William the opportunity to refuse him. Though, of course, if Charles sets a precedent and allows him some official role it would be hard for William to refuse to do the same thing later. I would still, personally, rather see Harry stand alone and forge an independent role, doing his own events.

  6. Louise177 says:

Harry isn’t going to any events where there are Royals. He will do his own events.

  7. Crystal says:

The fact that there is no urgency on this matter in the administration, and the fact that Charles and the rest are behaving as usual, indicates to me personally that this has nothing to do with visa issues or Charles’s health.

  8. Meija says:

If Harry does ANY rememberance ceremony he will positively overshadow any event the RF attends , only because the Media is so rapidly fascinated with him and his family. The smart thing to do is for the RF to embrace him and get pictures in the media with him otherwise now they will ignored in favor of the whipped up furor of the press with the Sussexes

    • sunniside up says:

Excellent comment, if you can’t beat him, join him, or in this case, let him join. My own idea was for him to attend a local one near to wear he lives, with normal people.

      • Meija says:

The press will still all flock to a local one. Harry is big news with the Media in the UK. He and Meghan breathe and there are 19 stories all blaming them for breathing and causing a ruckus!

  9. Over it says:

I will say this, as a parent, I would never play these games with my children lives . And as an observer and listening to Harry say he could never see a world in which he would bring his wife and children back to the uk without security, I am completely baffled.

    • Lady Digby says:

@Over It agreed 💯 as another parent. I can’t believe that Harry would take a kamikaze approach to security for Meg and his children. They must be being properly protected. There is definitely more going on than we have been told.

    • Lucky Charm says:

Wild speculation is not knowledge. The RR and we, the public, know ZERO about the actual security arrangements. And rightly so, they can’t be properly protected if that information is revealed!

  10. Piper says:

I’m always surprised when he is denied security, Remembrance Day wreath etc. You made him walk behind his mother’s casket at 12 years old. You owe him for life.

  11. Amy Bee says:

I’m sure he’ll do some Invictus commemoration, perhaps in Birmingham as someone up post suggested.

  12. Monika says:

Harry always remembers the veterans and fallen soñdiers on rememberance day, every year even while in the US.
I think what he will do while he is in the UK is to lay a wreath after the official ceremony to no overshadow the other Windsors. Was it ladt year when Harry remembeted VJ day with a wreath and a moving letter, somebody laid on Harry’s behalf, to remember his grandfather’s Prince Philip’s service?
This was done after the official event which I believe William skipped.

What I do not understand is that Harry still feels confident about a change in proceedingd and trust the “indications” given by the homeoffice that they “softened” their stance on Harry’s and his family’s security. What does this actually mean in practice? And every time Harry’s trust was misplaced and at the end his security request was refused, last time in July.

    • MFS says:

Every single time he has expected the institution has changed, he’s been wrong. Like, he really expected them to treat Meghan better than they did Diana. He expected they wouldn’t be racist. He expected they wouldn’t treat Meghan like the spare—as they treated Harry his whole life.

      • Monika says:

When Harry and Meghan left the UK for Canada Harry was sure they, the royal family, would not withdraw his and his family’s security because they still provided security for Andrew against whom credible allegations of sexual abuse were already made. But this is what happened, security was withdrawn, because Harry did not adhere to the royal family’s demands.

And here we are again Harry trusting some vague “indications” by the home office.

When will Harry wake up to the reality that they will not change ?

  13. Well says:

The Sussexes security is all C Ship has been talking and posting about.

    • ChillinginDC says:

They probably have a story at the ready when it is either denied or approved. If denied they are going to be watching to talk about how much it costs them. And I hate that people still keep thinking that the UK is paying for this when it is not.

  14. Becks1 says:

Of course he is going to do something for Remembrance. he always has. My guess is that it will be something in Birmingham related to Invictus, like others have said. And like others have said – that will be what gets the most attention.

As for security – this part stood out to me – “A long-awaited risk assessment, carried out on the orders of the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), took place at the end of July. Harry then informed officials of his intention to travel back to the UK.”

So maybe that risk assessment was the final piece in the puzzle because it basically guarantees they will get some type of security. If we consider they started planning this move a year ago, that was after RAVEC denied him security and he gave that interview about it. So he knew security was an issue when they started planning this move. It seems weird to me, timing wise, that the risk assessment was paused in March and then just magically happened at the end of July, right after harry met with Charles and two weeks before they announced this move. I think something changed in those few weeks.

    • Hypocrisy says:

Makes sense that you are probably right, he may already have RPO security because everyone has been refusing to comment on anything regarding security whatsoever.. palaces, government and the Sussex’s have all been silent or immediately refused to comment on any security they have or don’t have.

    • Eurydice says:

Yes, Harry and Meghan didn’t suddenly get amnesia or go insane. They won’t let their children’s faces be shown and yet they’ll move to the UK without security assurances? Really, people aren’t being sensible about this.

      • Puff Updater says:

Yes, just because no one knows about their security doesn’t mean it isn’t in place. How do you think Earl Spencer protects his 20 sq mile estate? & Just because private security is not supposed to be armed doesn’t mean it isn’t.

      • Becks1 says:

Yes, the emphasis has been that they dont have taxpayer security or RPOs. But maybe something changed and the way their team is allowed to operate in the UK is different now, or at the very least the government security offices are sharing intel with the Sussexes security team (something that was requested IIRC and denied previously.) A change like that wouldn’t necessarily mean that RAVEC changed its mind, it would be more nuanced than that.

      • ChillinginDC says:

We are bringing up what Harry himself has said. He has said RAVEC needs to change their posture for his entire family and himself so that they are safe in Britain. Since Harry was an infrequent visitor they refused to change it and said it would be done on a case by case basis. And we know that they didn’t change it at all and a few times Harry was near a known stalker of his and could have been hurt. Why even some of the RR got at RAVEC because of that. And the sticky point is that he’s not going to be a full time working Royal and others who are not, get only what they call limited security. So he still may not get fully what he wants. I hope whatever RAVEC is doing gets finished up soon.

    • Mairzy Doats says:

While the risk assessment was paused in March, it wasn’t publicized or even told to Harry at the time. I believe there were repercussions when the pause was announced in July with the lame explanation that the police were too busy and too understaffed and Harry too unimportant — basically publicly putting family pettiness over national security and preserving the reputation of the country’s policing/security defenses and infrastructure. Interesting that Alderton’s retirement was announced shortly thereafter, or maybe just coincidence. And of course, Harry’s assessment was done immediately when this came to light.

    • Nic919 says:

I think PM Burnham’s comment that it was a private matter says a lot. He doesn’t want a serious issue happening under his watch and so someone if taking care of security right now. Charles is the only answer but they don’t want to say that because of how some sectors will complain about this.
And if RAVEC has done another risk assessment, I don’t see how they can reasonably say anything but that Harry and his family need security. Those kids of his are higher targets than the rest of the extended family and likely more than the Wales kids because of the right wing racists who hate their existence.

And if you notice there are people in the UK from the security sector saying that Harry needs security. This is not random. They are changing the mood to show it’s needed.

Harry may not get the full police escort where the roads are shut down, but I don’t see how they don’t get RPOs eventually.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

I do not think it is in any way a mere coincidence that Charles welcoming Harry with his whole family to Highgrove, this RAVEC assessment finally getting put in train, and the removal of Alderton, all happened in the same brief window in July.

Charles absolutely looks like he’s laying the groundwork for something beyond “Private Citizen Sussexes” here. Add to that the *several* clandestine meetings conducted by Charles and Harry, both directly and through their proxies *without Camilla OR William in the room*, is extremely important and very telling. Camilla is the person Chuck is closest to, yet she’s left out of it. William is his heir and (should be) his right hand man in all things, yet he’s left out of it.

They’re both being deliberately kept out of the loop. Why?

If Harry’s just a member of the family and they’re not trying to make him a working royal in the Firm again, these moves on Charles’ side raise questions.

Camilla would be expected to be excluded from affairs of state due to being a consort. She would be expected to be included in family matters, though.

William by contrast, as heir, is not only the future head of state but the future head of the family as well. So he *should* be participating in all these meetings. It’s not like Billy’s too busy to show up, after all.

William keeps hollering about how much he never wants to be in the same room with Harry again, that also raises additional questions. William has a documented history of violence, he seems to be at variance with most of the senior members of his family.
William is, contrary to his position in the family and in the succession, weirdly being kept out of all these discussions.

At minimum, I believe Charles is making these moves because he desperately wants to force Harry to walk behind his coffin as he forced him to do for his mother. The man seems determined to use his youngest son as a human shield even after death.

The other possibility is a slow reintroduction and rehabilitation of the Sussexes’ image as prelude to the government appointing Harry as Georgie’s Regent.

If this is not about Harry becoming Regent for Georgie, then it’s most likely tied to Charles’ wishes in re: Operation Menai Bridge. If he wants the Sussexes there, he knows he needs to guarantee their safety.
Harry won’t stir without it. Meghan won’t stir without it. Harry was abundantly clear during the BBC interview that he was fed up with the establishment stitch up. He gave that interview to throw the gauntlet down in front of his father.

This plus William’s incapability are forcing Charles’ hand on two fronts. Charles will realize, if he hasn’t already, that the survival of the monarchy depends on putting aside his own pettiness and jealousy and making amends to the Sussexes.

The press are going to do their nut over this, of course.

  15. line says:

If the information in this article really comes from sources close to Harry, then I have to admit that it gives much more weight to the theory I mentioned before.

I had considered the possibility that their strategy might be to return to the UK without the security Harry demands, putting Charles and the authorities under enough pressure that they would eventually have to restore his protection. I always found that theory rather absurd, though, because I cannot believe Harry and Meghan would deliberately put their children at risk for that purpose.

But if Harry is now genuinely trying to return to the UK, live there with his children, attend official commemorations and regain some kind of public role, then perhaps my other theory makes more sense: he may never have wanted to give up the privileges attached to his status. He simply wanted to escape the constraints of the institution.

I understand why he wants to attend Remembrance Day. It is an important part of his military history. But those suggesting that Harry and Meghan should simply create their own events seem to forget how the monarchy works.

The example of Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I is relevant here. Two royal courts could not simply coexist side by side when one could become a political or symbolic rival. Diana is another example. After her divorce, she may not have intended to create a rival court, but her popularity and public profile effectively created one, and the Windsors were deeply uncomfortable with it. Her security was ultimately withdrawn.

Harry already knows this dynamic. Charles withdrew his security after he stepped back from royal duties, and when Harry later sought his father’s help over security concerns in Canada, he said his calls were no longer being answered.

So why would things be different now?

If Harry and Meghan start creating their own events and building a permanent public presence in Britain, I think the Windsors will see it as competition. And that is where the media harassment campaigns could begin.

In my opinion, the Windsors do not want Harry and Meghan back inside the institution. They want them to be independent.

You left the institution, you wanted a different life, so live that life. Build your own career, do your own work, and let the monarchy function without you.

Harry can return to Britain and honour veterans. But if he wants to recreate a parallel royal presence while still claiming independence, then he should not be surprised if the Windsors push back.

    • Mairzy Doats says:

The royal family literally created Harry, not only through DNA but over time they created the conditions by which anytime he steps outside the door it’s news, no matter what part of the world. To suggest that he moderate his LIFE because estranged family members might be uneasy about his mere existence is ludicrous. It’s not Harry’s decision to “let the monarchy function without [him]”! Maybe they can just get a grip? Or maybe they still see Harry’s function as a deflection from the spotlight being on them.

Nobody is threatening the ability for Charles and William, and eventually George, to control and manage an enormous real estate and financial investment empire, and dole the proceeds (or not) as they see fit. This “royal family drama” nonsense is just the public relations (funny hats) arm of the family thrashing about and trying to control a media that makes tons of money off this nonsense.

      • line says:

Mairzy Doats : I think the key point is that Harry cannot simply become an ordinary private citizen in the eyes of the public, even if he is technically a private individual.

His father is the King and his brother is the heir to the throne. Whatever Harry does, he will always be connected to the monarchy. That is precisely why I find it difficult to believe that he could return to Britain, build his own public organisation, hold his own events and operate in the same space as the Royal Family without creating tensions.

This isn’t about Harry being a threat to Charles or William’s constitutional power. It is about the fact that, symbolically and publicly, he remains connected to the Royal Family whether he likes it or not.

And I also don’t completely agree that the media are simply independent actors exploiting the monarchy. The British tabloid press and the monarchy have a complicated relationship in which both sides benefit. The monarchy gives the tabloids an enormous amount of content and relevance, while the media help maintain the public spectacle around the institution.

In fact, without the constant media narrative surrounding the Royal Family, I am not sure the British monarchy would have the same cultural presence it has today. And its popularity is already much weaker among younger generations.

That is why Harry and Meghan’s situation is so complicated. Their very existence in Britain will inevitably be connected to the monarchy, and if they build a separate, highly visible public presence, the media will turn it into a story about the Royal Family whether they want that or not.

So again, I’m not saying Harry should disappear or stop living his life. I’m saying that the idea that he can simply become completely independent while remaining one of the most recognisable people connected to the British monarchy is unrealistic.

He may be a private citizen legally, but symbolically and in the public imagination, he will never be completely separate from the institution.

And that is exactly where the problem lies. I think it is genuinely naive to believe that Harry can, simply through his own choices, change how this system works and somehow make the institution accept Meghan and their children on his terms. The monarchy is much bigger than Harry, and he cannot simply decide that the rules and dynamics surrounding it will change because he wants them to.

  16. Bum says:

Why can’t there be different levels to this security thing? We already know that the British press operates in extremes. If they’re in the UK they must want to be with the royal family. They can’t seem to envision any other option. Maybe it’s the same thing with the reporting on the security. All they can imagine is a full police motorcade like the rest of the Royals have as the only version of “security”. Maybe Harry got what he asked for all along which is access to threat information for his private security? Would that not suffice for his needs and would that not equal what the PM said?

    • SpringFlower says:

No, that wouldn’t suffice for his needs. Intelligence is great, but it doesn’t replace armed police. Harry’s security can’t carry guns or arrest anyone.

And relying on private security isn’t a realistic solution either. We’re talking about millions every year. What happens when he can no longer afford it?
If the threat level is high, he needs state protection. That’s how security works. It’s based on risk, not on whether he’s a working royal.

  17. Nancy says:

I understand many supporters feel blind-sighted by the recent Sussex decisions. But I find it amusing and somewhat naive that folks think they were safer in the US. That is statically just not true. Will the press hound them in England? Surely. Did the press hound them in the US? Undoubtedly. I don’t see any real evidence that Harry and Meghan are putting themselves or their children at higher risk by moving. There is just not any sound evidence to the back this up. We should all take a breath and trust that they have thought this through.

    • Bum says:

Agreed! How did Harry overnight turn from someone willing to do anything to protect his family to someone so selfish he would put them in danger to prove a point? Or maybe there are details about their security that have not been made public?

      • Brassy Rebel says:

I do think it’s possible that they have armed security which we don’t know about. I hope that’s the case. But if they are paying for it, that’s going to be a massive expense.

    • Crystal says:

There are plenty of people who think this time around it will go smoothly and I hope it does. But the assertion that they are not as safe in the US is just categorically untrue especially to anyone who has been paying attention the past 10 years. In California there are no royal reporters there (except those making the trek to stake it out), there are no “Sloanes” to make their social circle untrustworthy. Their property is much more secure, their bodyguards can be armed. Meghan herself has stated the increased level of safety she felt.
I think we would be hearing confirmations if they had the security you mention. It’s my opinion Harry is utilizing as much private security as he can until he forces their hand on this because he feels it’s the only way. Maybe it is, even if I dislike it as an outsider looking in.

      • ChillinginDC says:

Agree with Crystal. He doesn’t have the security he wants since RAVEC hasn’t approved it at all. And CA was much more secure. They had the ability to restrict anyone flying overheard, taking shots, kids were not allowed to be in photos, and their security was armed. They may be armed in the UK anyway, but I can’t see Harry ignoring a rule like that which the RR would attack him about.

But there’s a reason why the are threatening lawsuits against anyone that publishes photos of their kids or lets the public know where they are living. I don’t know if the threat is going to matter to the DM though if they think they can get more money out of being the first to provide photos.

      • Nancy says:

The royal reporters may write awful things about Meghan and Harry, and even their children. But in terms of physical safety, I’m referring to the fact that there are more than 20 times the number of guns in the US as compared to England. That works out to be more than one per every man woman and child. So yeah, they are absolutely safer in England. Granted, Meghan felt safe in her home in Montecito. But they moved around very carefully and they will do the exact same in England. Need I remind you of what happened to them in NYC, despite police provided security? Mean articles foment anger and angry disturbed people and even terroists represent risk, but we have that here in the US too. The difference is that in the US these people have easy access to high powered weapons.

      • Crystal says:

You mentioned the gun thing in another post and the fact is, I really don’t think it has anything to do with making them less safe in the USA. I think you are forgetting the amount of death threats sent to Meghan simply during her engagement in the UK. The UK has plenty of stabbings too. In any case, the question of those hating them having access to firearms is just not the same in the USA because the frenzy isn’t being whipped up 24/7 by tabloids in California. And while the presence of guns is more, the security response is proportionally higher because it can be.
Wealthy people are not affected by threats of gun violence the way everyday people are, either. The event in NYC had nothing to do with guns.

      • Ginger says:

Harry himself has talked about threats he has seen that are based in the UK. Credible threats. Harry himself has said he, Meghan and the kids are safe in the U.S. so, we are just going by what Harry has said.

  18. Mads says:

I’m wondering (perhaps naively) if some sort of back channel agreement has been brokered between the current government and the Sussexes bypassing the palace completely. Harry has strong connections to MPs with armed forces backgrounds and Yvette Cooper, who was Foreign Secretary at the time, was in Ukraine with Harry on one of his recent visits there.

I’ve watched a few prominent MPs, including former Cabinet Ministers, speak out in favour of security and the current Leader of the Opposition giving a similarly positive message regarding it being provided. Also, the media is finally interviewing prominent security officials and reiterating that security is dependent upon risk and not popularity. There’s definitely been a shift in the narrative in an attempt to push back on the normal hyperbole.

As to Harry attending a Remembrance Day event, well if the Sussexes are living in the Cotswolds it’s just under a two hour drive to the National Arboretum in Staffordshire.

    • Puff Updater says:

It would be so cool if Harry used his military connections and staged a coup. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  19. nicole says:

Give Harry (and Meghan) some credit. Obviously things changed behind the scenes (family, security, etc) over the last year to make this move possible for them. Neither would put their family, safety, or mental health at risk to force anything with Charles or William. Family dynamics can be the worst but we honestly have no idea what is happening (behind the scenes). I hope they stay strong and I wish them well.

  20. QuiteContrary says:

Will no one think of William??

Now William is going to have to get his ass out of bed early enough to attend the Festival of Remembrance.

    • Mayp says:

Just what on Earth would give Harry the idea that he would be welcome at any public facing Royal events? Maybe nothing. Maybe he’s just planning to lay a wreath at a smaller veterans’ cemetery. But why advertise that notion?! He should just do it and not assume that he can do anything related to the Royals at this point. And when it comes to the Cenotaph, I’m sure that the Royals think: that belongs to us, Harold!

  21. 810Mama says:

Oh Lord it looks like the Sussex Squad is going to need to be reconstituted. I don’t know how though with Elon Musk owning Twitter.

A lot of us moved either to Bluesky or Spoutible.😶

  22. ABritGuest says:

scottys which Harry is ambassador for, marches during Remembrance Day service but I’d be surprised if he was at the cenotaph as I think Remembrance and the royal festival hall remembrance events are events that mainly the taxpayer funded royals attend. My guess is that the palace will draw even harder lines on the taxpayer funded royals v non events with h&m in town & wanting the taxpayer funded royals to be the main event.

So I think Harry will continue with what he’s been doing in America, marking remembrance etc his own way- maybe in UK he will release images etc after the official events. I’m sure H&M presence in UK doing Archewell and other events like they did in USA will lead to overshadowing tears but it’s not like the press weren’t claiming timed As ever posts were overshadowing a birthday or whatever the royals in uk were doing already so what else is new.

I’m curious of what better strategy people think could have been deployed to try and resolve the security issue especially after Harry lost the security case. The courts couldn’t provide redress & Harry was told at the court of appeal that RAVEC runs via royal prerogative so essentially can do it wants.

RAVEC’s own rules is that a risk assessment is meant to happen every 2 years but (depending on what reports you believe as I’ve seen Robert Jobson claim it has been done but they are refusing to share the report), they reportedly haven’t done one for Harry since 2019. The government lawyers also said that security on a case by case basis was appropriate because Harry didn’t live in uk so they would look at security needs based on when he is visiting. However so far on every occasion his security requests have been refused including in 2022 when they wanted to bring the kids.

We know the palace are blocking things and we know why but also even if his relatives don’t want him in uk and want to exile him why should he just be like ok & accept that? He & his family haven’t done anything wrong and have every right to be in the uk. Also remember that the risk assessment isn’t just about security in UK. Because Harry’s risk mainly comes from his position in the monarchy and as he fought in the British armed forces, the uk government will have the most intelligence on his risk profile. Part of the reason the NYC car chase even happened was because NYPD didn’t have his risk profile so after it happened, made their own adjustments. Harry’s team had to rely on a tip off from the FBI on an al qaeda threat which they’d have info on because of its own operations in Afghanistan.

So essentially Harry and Meghan are having to rely on the generosity of other countries governments to keep them safe eg when they went to Colombia and Nigeria, particularly where they visit countries where their security teams cannot fully operate. And these countries need the most up to date info on threats etc to provide the appropriate coverage but don’t have this without the uk risk assessment. So back in 2023/24 there was a report that Archewell staff were anxious when travelling with them for work.

That isn’t really sustainable long term especially as the kids grow and may need to travel independently. So I do think Harry is trying to force the issue. We saw at the inquest how it was said Diana’s tragic death could have been avoided if she didn’t turn down RPOs. So it’s no surprise Harry is dogged on this issue to ensure appropriate security. I do think there will be things we don’t know especially as they are in manufacturing consent mode (various ministers etc chiming in to say Harry needs security).

  23. bisynaptic says:

Forcing the issue is so risky. I hope that’s not what he’s doing.

  24. tamsin says:

In the UK, they don’t actually do anything on November 11 specifically. They seem to have a Remembrance Weekend, including Remembrance Sunday. Harry could do something with Invictus on the actual date. November 11 falls on a Wednesday this year. As everyone has said, the Windsors guard their ceremonial role on Remembrance Day jealously, so don’t think Harry will be a part of ceremony. I think that Meghan and Harry will not appear with the royal family at any of their official events or so-called events that constitute royal work or duties.

    • Nic919 says:

Harry being the only one who served in combat in the current generation and not being there will forever remain a very bad look.

Especially with his involvement with Invictus. He’s doing more for veterans than just laying down a wreath.

Maybe Charles is smart enough to see this. We know William isn’t.

  25. samihali says:

If proper security costs the state so much, send the bill to the tabloids for whipping up so much hate against them.

    • Lady Digby says:

@Samihali agreed 💯 Ann Widdicome died violently this Summer and no one wants to see that happen again. There was uproar when Diana died three decades ago. If Harry and co are properly assessed now and qualify for security then it must be paid for. Perhaps King should pay towards security for his entire family? Is he still paying privately for Andrew ‘s security ?

  26. Mia says:

Harry is forcing the issue now to secure official protection while his father is still around. Even if they are not going to be “full time working royals”, the Sussexes need to establish themselves firmly there well before the king’s passing in order to box William in as much as possible and make it as challenging as possible for him to make significant changes to their status, royal rights, and protection after Charles passes. In addition to wanting to spend the time that’s left as close to his father as possible in order to have no regrets and to allow every opportunity for Chuck to be a father and grandfather, it appears evident that there’s a plan and steps that must be taken now to get established and things in order while Chuck is still around. This is more important and timely than anything else they were doing here in the States (most of which they can also do from there), and they’ll always be able to come back here whenever they want.

    • Mairzy Doats says:

      Totally agree!

    • pinkbeer22 says:

@Mia — You’re actually the first person I’ve written out what I think is the deciding factor behind why they may have moved back now.

William may have felt that by forcing them into self-exile, he had a solid argument for denying them security. Harry being back in the UK makes that argument much harder to sustain.
The MPs and other MET officers who understand why Harry keeps being denied security — and many who believe and know the issue ultimately comes from the Palace — are advising him. If anyone genuinely thinks a man who has spent six years fighting for his family’s security, while refusing to bring his wife and children back, would suddenly gamble with their safety without some kind of internal backing or reassurance, they need to think again. You may not like the UK, but all the signs suggest this is not a man acting without a plan.
Harry may be many things, but he isn’t stupid. Neither is Meghan.
Their security arrangements may never be fully disclosed, and there are obvious reasons for that — first and foremost, safety.
I think the bigger strategy may be securing some kind of arrangement while Charles is still King. Once Billy becomes King, if there is nothing already in place, it could become much harder to establish one. But if an arrangement is secured now, it would be much harder for Billy to strip it away later without creating significant PR blowback.

Whoever is advising them may be thinking very long-term. This isn’t necessarily about Harry and Meghan alone. It could be about giving their children the ability to grow up connected to both countries while knowing they can be safe in both.

That, to me, could be the real endgame here — their children’s future.

  27. JOY says:

I still think Harry’s visa/immigration status is the reason his family is back in the UK. He needed to go back home to fix his visa issue. Why else would he risk their safety and why do it so out of the blue. On the day they left, new stricter visa rules took effect.

    • Mayp says:

I think that is a strong possibility. Previously, I thought that maybe Charles wanted him back, for example, to regain his residency as a counselor of state. But if that were the case Charles would have managed to arrange security for him, either through Ravec or his paying privately. But that apparently hasn’t happened. So, visa issues are the next best viable option. And, as I noted in another story, ICE is deporting permanent legal residents (and Trump has said he won’t interfere in their deportation process).

  28. MaisiesMom says:

This is only indirectly related, but it’s always funny to me when haters claim Harry is “thick” and act like Will has it over him because he went to uni. Like Will wouldn’t give anything to have Harry’s military record instead of a degree in geography from Saint Andrews and a stint as a helicopter pilot in the UK. And I’m not saying Saint Andrew’s isn’t a very good school. But William is as status obsessed as they come, and the fact that it isn’t Oxford or Cambridge probably chaps him too.

    • Kasztanka says:

My God, William is so dim-witted and lacking in knowledge that it is not only an embarrassment to St Andrews that someone like him receives their degree, but actually a violation of existing regulations—a practice that ought to be investigated by the Ministry of Higher Education. William got his degree solely because he is the heir to the throne. He didn’t study; he partied. He didn’t learn—because, as he himself boasted, “he doesn’t read”—he just showed up to collect the diploma. Middleton snagged a degree as the “prince’s girlfriend”—though she wasn’t even that at the time, merely a call girl. Her degree is an even bigger scandal; her embarrassing intellectual level, complete lack of knowledge, and inability to string together even a single coherent sentence would disqualify her from even attending high school. She “studied” the local bars and mattresses alongside the prince.
Neither of them brings credit to St Andrews; they are merely a source of shame for the university authorities.
As an aside, William does not hold a pilot’s license; he never completed the training. As an instructor once stated, he never logged the mandatory flight hours. He is a pilot only in the British tabloids and in his own head.

  29. Lucky Charm says:

Wild speculation is not knowledge. The RR and we, the public, know ZERO about the actual security arrangements. And rightly so, they can’t be properly protected if that information is revealed!

  30. Mosshearted says:

If you step back, zoom out, you realize that Harry has been fighting his way back to Britain since he left it—starting with his fight to retain police protection so that he and his family could come and go from the country as they wished. For all his talk of hating the place, he is fucking obsessed with it, and that makes sense, given his lineage. His whole identity is being a British prince—one of the most famous in modern history. Britain is the seat of his power and influence, and it just doesn’t hit the same from Montecito, CA.
