Jessica Simpson’s dentist is shocked that there are people who don’t brush daily

Jessica Simpson is all smiles as she makes her way through the JFK Airport after arriving in New York

Kaiser covered a Jessica Simpson story earlier today, but I just couldn’t resist this one. People Magazine asked Jessica’s dentist to comment on the fact that she’s admitted that she doesn’t brush her teeth every day. This is something Jessica has discussed in two separate interviews. The first interview honestly sounded like a joke to me, and I thought that she was either messing with us or had just forgotten to pack her toothbrush on a recent trip. Then Jessica confirmed in a follow up interview that she only brushes her teeth three times a week, explaining that she “needs a little coating” on them so that her lips don’t slide! Instead of brushing, she’ll “use a shirt or something” to wipe her teeth along with some mouthwash for fresh breath. She also claims to floss, but I’m not really buying that.

Jessica’s dentist was pretty amazed that she doesn’t brush every day, and told People that he was surprised to hear that there are people who don’t practice regular dental hygiene:

Last week, while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the singer revealed that she brushes her teeth only about three times a week.

“My teeth are so white and I don’t like them to feel too slippery, but I do use Listerine and I do floss everyday,” she told DeGeneres. “But I don’t brush them everyday. I’ll use a shirt or something … I know it’s gross, but I always have fresh breath.”

Simpson’s dentist, Dr. Bill Dorfman, who appeared on an episode of Simpson’s previous reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica and maintains a practice in Los Angeles, says he’s surprised and concerned about her brushing habits.

“I was kind of shocked. I assumed everybody brushed their teeth all the time,” he tells PEOPLE. “People pay us a lot of money for that slippery feeling. It’s kind of the best part.”

But this wasn’t the first time Simpson has talked about her lack of brushing. In March, the singer told a group of people a similar story at the “iheartradio presents an Evening with Jessica Simpson” in New York.

“Find me when I’m 60 and [my teeth] will probably be all out, but I literally have these strong powerful teeth that don’t need to be brushed,” Simpson told the audience.

Dorfman says people should be brushing and flossing after every meal, or it can cause anything from inflamed gums to heart disease.

“It’s great that she’s flossing all the time, but you have to brush too,” Dorfman recommends. “What goes on in your mouth really affects your whole body.”

[From People]

What the hell is Jessica talking about, she has “strong, powerful teeth?” Teeth are bones for chewing food, they’re powerful by design. Cavities and plaque can destroy them, though, and her dentist is right that she needs to also be concerned about her health. Gingivitis and periodontal disease can contribute to all sorts of health problems, and dental plaque has been tied to increased risk of heart attack. It’s irresponsible not to brush your teeth twice a day, and it’s even worse to announce it as if your mouth is an exception to the rule. Even little kids know they’re supposed to brush in the morning and night, and after every meal if they can. Not Jessica, though, she has “powerful” teeth. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but in this case there’s little doubt that this is a very stupid thing to say and do. I love that People got a quote from her dentist, and that he was all “there are people who don’t brush?” Do you think Jessica will actually brush her teeth at least once a day now, or will she trade that comfortable teeth coating for uncomfortable dentures?

Wow, it’s one damn thing to wash your hair twice a week, for it IS healthier. I was in cosmetology and learned that and my hair dresser told me the same. However, brushing your damn teeth rarely is NOT the same as the hair, that’s just NASTY. I think that the reason her teeth are “so white” because most likely she had the money to have them whitened and now she wants to act it’s because how often she brushes them. I can’t go a day without brushing my teeth and I have to wash my face and brush my teeth before I have my breakfast or go anywhere and I definately like to shower daily. I have even read articles that shampoo doesn’t do much for your hair, for it doesn’t go into your roots and the vitmans and nutrients just slide off and I also read that when you wash your clothes, you might as well not use detergent, for your clothes can be just as clean without, because back in the day people did it just fine without detergent. I’m thinking like…WHAT??? LOL What’s next, we don’t have to shower or use soap on our bodies, oh lordy! lmao

I too have strong powerful teeth. they are titanuim alloy. I look kind of like that guy Jaws from that 007 movie. But I love that slippery feeling, whch is why I gargle with WD-40. Also, who cares?

Sometimes I’m nice and go easy on her, but not this time:
1 – She’s an idiot for not brushing her teeth regularly.
2 – She’s an even bigger idiot for admitting it publicly, not just once but many time.

She is a beautiful young lady. She needs an older man to teach her proper hygiene. Just thinking about how wild Mayer said she is in the sack. Mmmmmm…yummy

Honestly, this woman is too stupid for words. Isn’t she close to 30 years old already? The ‘cute and dumb’ routine doesn’t work any longer – but, alas, it is not a routine. I guess she thinks ‘white teeth’ are ‘healthy teeth.’ Note to Jessica: your teeth are only white because you bleach them, not because they’re healthy. Now go brush your freaking teeth already.

If she flosses and uses listerine daily, that certainly helps keep down the bad bacteria in your mouth. But still. TMI.

She really needs to work on her mental filter. In the words of my Mother “think before you speak”. She’s a beautiful girl, but now when I look at her, I also see… filth.

I hate to defend her in any way, but…While she maybe doesn’t even understand why she has ‘powerful teeth,’ some people are predisposed to have healthier teeth than others. Just like any other genetic strengths and weaknesses. I have always practiced good dental hygiene, but had 1/2 dozen cavities by my teens–my family’s teeth (and joints) are naturally weaker.

I dont get the not wanting to coating so her lips dont slide?? I brush several times a day and never had my lips slide, but then Im not sure what that even means.
How does she know her breath isnt bad? I doubt anyone around her would actually tell her if it was. Most mouthwash only mask the oder for a bit.

It’s especially important to get the tartar around the gumline. Flossing and mouthwash isn’t going to do a good job on that. She doesn’t seem like the sharpest knife in the drawer.

How sad for Jessica that the only ways she gets publicity are for the inane shit she says or does and the pimping efforts of her father.

I will say that it’s at least a good thing she uses mouth wash. That gets rid of a lot of bacteria and helps the gums. I am sure most of the people commenting on here do not use it.

There is something to her “strong” teeth idea. Some people have better teeth than others, regardless of care. My fiance and I both brush and rinse twice a day, but he also flosses a ton and uses special rinse from the dentist. I’ve never had a cavity, and I’m 27. He’s had a cavity like every trip to the dentist, and has had to have major work done. I’m sure some of it has to do with diet, but I’m fairly certain that with the kind of care he takes of his teeth, there is something else going on. I’m not just lucky. :)

    umm…
you know what’s interesting to me? that so many people get angry about something, which is to me quite innocent. Not brushing your teeth daily? Wow. That automatically makes someone stupid?

For the record, humans were not born with a toothbrush in their hand. Obsessive tooth-brushing is something of the past 80 or so years, and while I’m a toothbrusher, I don’t think it’s necessary for the health of a human being, intrinsically, to do so daily (especially in her case, since she uses mouthwash often). I think diet is much more important for tooth/bone health. We all want to avoid aging, but it’s gonna happen. Sunscreen and brushing/flossing a million times a day isn’t going to prevent the inevitable…

I’m thinking this is not going to help her get a boyfriend.

Every potential beau already had to deal with the prospect of dating an airhead whose every roll in the hay is on the record. Now he’d be mocked for (and disgusted by) her yucky mouth as well.

Her dentist really needs to explain to her what tooth-brushing is for. It’s largely about clearing plaque from the gumline and massaging the gums to avoid receding gums in later years (an extremely painful and irreversible condition). No shirt-rubbing, “strong teeth” (eye roll), or Plax can replace that.

  22. ekey3cat says:

Lisa, the reason why humans today have to brush our teeth so often is that we have a relatively carbohydrate-rich diet in comparison to that of our ancestors. Cavities were virtually unknown in prehistoric populations who ate a predominantly meat-based diet. As soon as people started eating more carbohydrates in the form of plants, they started experiencing cavities.

One of the reasons why life expectancy today is so much longer than it was a few thousand or a few hundred years ago is because of the improvements in oral hygiene. Before modern dentistry, it would not be uncommon for a young healthy person to get a cavity that, over the course of months or years, developed into a massive bone infection and killed him/her.

Is she trying to repel people now? I just can’t think of any reason for revealing this information. The only thing worse would be telling the world that she thinks the whole showering and bathing thing is really overrated. I had a friend who would tell guys about really disgusting habits she had to see if they could “hang.” She was beautiful, and I think she just wanted to see if they were interested in her and not just the way she looked.

  24. lisa says:

@ekey3cat – Well said, and I mostly agree with you – except that I argue that the definition of oral hygiene doesn’t need to be one who flosses and brushes daily. Like you say, dental problems have to do with diet. I don’t know what Jessica Simpson eats, but I think certain diets don’t warrant as careful dental care as others. If you have an uber-healthy diet and drink enough water to flush down some residue, then brushing every other day, to me, is a non-issue – especially if you do other things like disinfect your mouth with mouthwash and floss.

However, if this person eats things high in sugar and sodium, does not hydrate, and leaves chunks of food stuck between their teeth…yeah, that can produce damage if neglected.

My bigger point was to call attention to the absolutism of hygiene: you either do something every day or you’re unhealthy/unclean. I think that’s ludicrous, given how well our bodies maintain themselves.

My other point was to say that Jessica isn’t gross for brushing her teeth every other day, but i’ll agree that maybe she makes people uncomfortable by revealing things about herself that others find “unacceptable”…and how quickly people love to be judgemental/harsh about these things, without a second thought!

@lisa Yes, it is disgusting. This doesn’t make her stupid, what makes her stupid is that she’d tell the entire world about it. Next she’ll be telling us she eats her boogers, I wouldn’t be surprised!
