Danica “Winnie Cooper” McKellar, half-naked, funny & pregnant for Maxim

maxim5

Sometimes I try to figure out how old you people are. All of you, reading and commenting. Are you of the generation that remembers Wonder Years? Or do you remember the original, called “the sixties”? Or do you have no idea what am I talking about because you’re too busy playing a new-fangled video game? Well, I remember Wonder Years. It was good television! And little Winnie Cooper made an impression on me, mainly because at that age, my hair was almost identical to hers – straight and really, really long. After Wonder Years, boys stopped teasing me about my long hair.

Anyway, the actress who played Winnie Cooper, Danica McKellar, is all grown up. She was actually on several episodes of The West Wing, if anyone remembers her from that great show. She also wrote a book about math, and Danica has, like, a Masters or PhD in something math-related. So… smart girl. Except that she’s posing in Maxim in her underwear. Ugh. Oh, and she’s pregnant too! Winnie is all grown up.

Did you have fun at your Maxim shoot?
Are you kidding? So much fun! There was a smart-and-sexy schoolgirl theme going on, so it was awesome playing dress-up.

How did you go from child actress to math goddess?
When I got to college, I was intending to study film. But I found that my brain was feeling mushy, so I took a few math classes. I started doing really well at them, and solving equations was this, like, drug rush.

A drug rush from math?
It’s true! Then, after graduation, an article came out about a paper I’d coauthored in which we proved a new theorem. From that, I was approached to write books, and I knew I wanted to help girls not be afraid of math. My latest, Hot X: Algebra Exposed!, is coming out in August.

That’s quite a 180 from The Wonder Years.
I realized I needed to find out who I was outside of that show. My whole life people called me Winnie Cooper, and it was important for me to find out what else I had to offer.

Can math be sexy?
Totally! If a guy is skilled at anything, that’s attractive. There’s something very primal about that, and, sure, it can be as simple as figuring out the tip quickly.

What else turns you on?
Confidence is one of the sexiest things in guys and girls. Look at Michelle Pfeiffer: My God, she’s 50 years old, but she is still so sexy. If I were into women, I would be totally into her.

Now, everyone remembers when Winnie and Kevin first kissed. Was that your actual first kiss?
It was, yeah, for both of us. I was 12, and he was 11. That was only about a week after we’d met, and we totally had crushes on each other. But we never kissed offscreen, ever.

You must meet guys who hit on you because of your famous role.
I’ve always been really cautious about guys who have a Winnie Cooper fantasy, and I’m so glad about that. I mean, I can count on one hand the guys I’ve been with. It was really challenging, but I never gave it up too soon, if you know what I mean.

[From Maxim]

Okay, Hot X: Algebra Exposed! is maybe the funniest book title ever. I think it’s the exclamation point that kills me. I also love “I never gave it up too soon, if you know what I mean.” She’s a funny little thing, isn’t she? Or am I laughing because I’m sick as a dog, drugged up and repeating “Hot X! If you know what I mean”? Chuckle… no, that is funny. Anyway, last point: she’s so pretty! I wish she wasn’t posing in her underwear. I wish she was like “You know what? I’m smart, funny and gorgeous, so I’m keeping my blouse on, thank you very much.”

I remember watching the Wonder Years…so must be similar in age to you, Kaiser. I never thought “Winnie” was attractive and hence, never understood what all the fuss was about concerning her when the show was on. She looks fabulous now – is this the miracle of a talented photographer and make up artist or that of a surgeon?

  2. Rachel says:

I used to love the Wonder Years when I was a kid. I always wished I had hair as perfect as Winnie Cooper’s but it never quite got there.

  3. Risa says:

I imagine she was pregnant before these pictures- or did I miss that in the article somewhere. The link you posted showed a picture of her with an article dated march 17th- and she had a definite belly…. here, not at all!

I am sure I just missed something here. lol

  4. Joan says:

She sure doesn’t look very pregnant! Perhaps the shoot was done before she told anyone.
Anyways, she is gorgeous and sounds like she has a nice sense of humour. I always loved The Wonder Years!

  5. amanda says:

Haha..Kaiser, I remember “The Wonder Years”…one of the better shows on TV (ever). I saw Kevin (Fred Savage…but he’ll always be Kevin) when I was out at club in D.C. when I was in college (1995-ish). We were all squealing, “Omigosh it’s Kevin!” But none of us had the stones to talk to him. The only other thing I recollect about it was that- and maybe it was just the jeans he had on- but his ass looked HUGE. Anyway, yeah, Winnie Cooper. She looks great. I can’t blame her for wanting to make a buck, and I’m not sure I wouldn’t do it too, if I looked like that. Honestly I’d probably never wear clothes if I looked like that.

  6. Jillian says:

I watched Wonder Years every week. I had a crush on Kevin and I thought his sister, Karen, was so cool.

  7. LindyLou says:

I remember the show. Never watched it but I was aware of who she is due to some article I read about her around the time her book came out. I don’t get why she posing in her gitch either. I thought she wasn’t the bimbo type…hmmm

  8. Kaye says:

I hate what Maxim does to women, but I have to agree that Danica seems cool. FYI, I was born in the 60’s but I don’t really remember them, but I do remember The Wonder Years quite clearly.

  9. Melissa says:

I LOVE the Wonder Years!! I actually have the complete series on DVD and I am only 28. It’s such a great show!! I am SO glad Winnie grew up to be so much more than another crazy child star…

    • jay says:

Yea they don’t make tv shows like that anymore nothing is taboo anymore just out in your face, i miss the innocence of television and Danica is the hottest white girl ever!!!!!!

  10. heb says:

I watched a lot of Wonder Years, but it was when it was re-runned On Nick at Night in 1998. I’m 25.

  11. Melinda says:

I used to watch the Wonder Years as a kid, and I wish I could buy it on DVD. It isn’t available because of the high cost of the music rights. I really hope they can work something out. The only way I can see it now is poor quality clips on Youtube. The episode with Karen’s wedding gets me every time!

  12. Sumodo1 says:

Yaaay! Winnie Cooper! Get girls to love math, please?

See what happens if you love math? You get a winning racehorse. Go, Girl!

  13. sarah says:

LOVED the Wonder Years. lol. I miss good quality shows like that. Anyhow, Danica looks amazing.

  14. d says:

    Um…ZOWIE!

  15. Jay says:

Loved the show – still love Winnie – and Danica looks amazing. What’s to complain about?

  16. Carrie says:

31 years old here- definitely watched The Wonder Years, definitely loved Kevin and Winnie Cooper.

    She’s gorgeous!

  17. Stephie says:

After ‘Lost’ leaves the air that’ll be the end of all good TV. Ahhh, the Wonder Years… I used to love the show and was really surprised to learn about Danica and her math related book writing. She also does yoga DVD’s with her mother http://www.dailydoseofdharma.com/.

  18. Strawberry says:

That show was junior high for me (graduated from college in ’02), and I remember all the girls had crushes on little Kevin. Some people are a bit too obsessed with this show, see: http://home.hccnet.nl/hans.bellwinkel/wonderyears/twy-bio1.html

  19. Dorothy says:

I will be 36 next month 🙁 Loved Wonder years and I think she has an amazing body, but there is just something odd about her face. I always thought so.

The guy that played the brother Harvey something or other does (produces) shows on VH1, i am thinking of Confessions of a Teenage Heartthrob (?) with Scott Baio. Loved that show too!!

  20. TaylorB says:

I always wanted her hair, still do. Even tried to dye my curly strawberry blonde hair brown, but the stinkin red keeps creeping back up. I would love, love, love, love to have thick, straight, shiny, dark brown hair.

  21. Stephy2185 says:

24 here…watched a bit of the wonder years when I was little, LOVED Ms. Cooper cause I loved all tv stars who had brown hair and brown eyes (like me!!)

I think it’s cool she posed in her undies…I mean, why can’t she be smart, funny, gorgeous AND show off that rockin’ bod she obviously worked hard to achieve and maintain? She looks great and she wants to show it off–NOTHING wrong with that!!!!

And I’m not saying this as a “skinny girl” who frequents the gym either…
I’m definitely WAY out of shape and dimpled and bulge-y in all those places we ladies would prefer fat not to settle (ie: hips, thighs, butt, tummy, arms) lol

I just think a girl should be able to be as multi-faceted as she is…
A good brain and a good body should not be mutually exclusive 😛

  22. Tia C says:

@ Melissa: Where did you manage to find the complete series on DVD? I wasn’t aware they had ever released it.

Danica McKellar must need to pay some bills. She doesn’t seem like the type to do this kind of pictorial. But dayum, she looks great!

  23. freckles says:

I’m 21 but I loved the Wonder Years! Like #10 said they replayed it on Nickelodeon in the 90’s and that’s how I watched it. I always thought Winnie was pretty although I thought the name was so strange (Pooh, anyone?). She’s GORGEOUS now! I absolutely love her face and those sleepy eyes. And awesome for her for choosing such a great post-stardom career for herself.

  24. archiepelago says:

Taylor B – swap? I’ve got the long thick dark hair and I desperately want to go red (but apparently you need to bleach all color out then dye it, so it would likely destroy it).

She seems cool but the comment about Michelle P might not go down so well with her… she’s 50, not dead!

  25. Bee says:

I was so sad when Kevin and Winnie didn’t end up together in the end! I guess it was realistic and everything, because very few people end up with their childhood sweethearts. But I was devastated by adult Kevin’s monologue at the end of the series about Winnie meeting him and his WIFE at the airport.I just comforted myself by thinking that he’d eventually divorce the wife and reunite with his true love Winnie Cooper.

  26. asiont says:

I watched wonder years and loved it 🙂

and I actually think that it’s ok that she posed for maxim, she is a good example that intelligent girls can be very sexy 🙂

  27. fizXgirl314 says:

yuck, isn’t the reason a woman gets a phd so that she DOESN’T have to pose half naked?

Double yuck! this just disgusts me SOOOOO much worse when it’s someone who I would think to have more respect for.

yuck yuck yuck… it’s already hard enough as it is for women to be taken seriously in any field, please keep that shit away from science!!!!

  28. Teresa says:

“and I actually think that it’s ok that she posed for maxim, she is a good example that intelligent girls can be very sexy”

I second that! So often smart girls are stereotyped as being plain or mousy and unattractive. Danica is proof that being hot doesn’t mean you have to be a bimbo. In a world of Paris Hiltons and Kim Kardashians girls need a more positive role model. She encourages girls to achieve academic success and shows that being smart is cool and to not be ashamed of it. And I love her for that. Go Danica!!! 🙂

  29. Teresa says:

fizXgirl314: Geez lighten up. You make it sound like she’s doing porn. It’s just Maxim for crying out loud!

  30. fizXgirl314 says:

I’m sorry but this pisses me off to no end. I have fairly large breasts so when I give a presentation, I make sure I’m wearing an extremely loose and unattractive sweater so that fellow scientists won’t sexualize me and actually pay attention to what I’m saying. This is pretty important to me… and the last thing I want to have perpetuated around the scientific community is that a scientist can be “sexy AND smart” no no no no no… this is NOT hollywood… keep your disgusting mutts out of the way we conduct ourselves!

  31. Mistral says:

Well, I guess I could criticize her for doing the stereotypical lad-mag shoot, but whatever. The girl has a PhD, and wants to celebrate her sexiness, too. So, you go girl. Not many of the ladies in Maxim/FHM/etc. have a PhD! Nor does the typical Hollywood actress.

I’m going to guess that a lot of us would be down to have a professional hair/makeup person do us up and have some “hot” photos taken by a professional photographer (plus photoshop and wind machines) to have when we’re old ladies.

And, I’m sure the hot male scientists are secret objects of lust to their coworkers/underlings, too. Why shouldn’t they celebrate their hotness? The professor was definitely my Gilligan’s Island crush.

  32. Confuzzle says:

Why is she taking her clothes off?

  33. Kim says:

I have no career -hum what should i do? I know- Ill pose half naked in a bad rag of a magazine.

  34. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

“celebrate her sexiness” are you joking?

  35. SixxKitty says:

I’m guessing despite the ‘hot’ (chuckle) title of her book the royalties do not a J.K.Rowling make, maybe shes taking her clothes off because the furnace is busted and she needs a new one?
I was a seventies child so I do remember the Wonder Years. Oh my god, I’m old!

  36. Zelda says:

    Be sex and be smart.

If we stop dividing the two then the two will stop being divided by others.

Formulas and fornication need not be mutually exclusive.

    Tits and trig!

Women have lots to offer. All at the same time.

  37. Granger says:

Zelda: “Women have lots to offer. All at the same time.”

Amen! It’s the dumb-as-post “actresses” who have nothing to offer BUT their looks who piss me off when they pose half-naked in a juvenile magazine. Power to the smart, sexy ladies.

  38. Ana says:

Math amazes me. I find so much of it useless but then again I’m not very smart so that’s not surprising. I took Calculus this semester and wondered where these people came up with this stuff at?!?!

    I hated the Wonder Years.

  39. fizXgirl314 says:

keep that shit at home… your coworkers do NOT need to know how “sexy” you are… seriously, can you imagine a man saying something like this? it would sound so silly… “I want to make sure people realize I’m sexy AND smart… ” I didn’t think so.

Nothing wrong with being attractive… but seriuosly, your coworkers don’t need to see your good on display :-/

  40. a says:

at least she’s pushing the smart girl angle!

    (34)

  41. endoplasmic ridiculum says:

I think Paul from the Wonder Years is a practicing lawyer in NYC?

  42. Nibbi says:

you bug, kaiser. why “ugh” that she’s a smart woman AND taking her clothes off for sexy pics? i don’t notice you “ugh”ing very much for other random female celebrities looking good in sexy pics… these aren’t even that over-the-top. like, if she’s intelligent and educated, she’s not allowed to portray herself in a sexy way? or, if she looks hot, it somehow diminishes the fact that she’s certifiably brainy and/or respects herself?
to me it’s the curse of “women aren’t allowed to be sexy AND smart.” i dig that she clearly does what the f* she feels like, and i hate that people feel such a need to put women into little holes- “pretty/sexy/sex object,” OR “smart, educated, classy person.” in my opinion she’s doing fine at both and i like it that women can (SHOULD, at least) have it both ways.

  43. Rydell says:

She doesn’t have her PhD in Mathematics.

  44. Anastasia says:

I’m 40, so when it was hot, I was running around in late high school, not caring much about what was on TV, but I always thought she was both cute and strange-looking at the same time, if that makes sense.

  45. shokwave says:

I dont like how the author looks down on her, or talks bad about her for doing a shoot for maxim magazine in her underwear.

its not demeaning to take pictures in your underwear or even naked. Men when they have a nice body, will always be taking their shirt off or doing things to show off their body, so whats wrong with women doing it? if you’ve got it, flaunt it.

Im tired of the old world mentality where people should be ashamed of their bodies. im betting the author is not very attractive or she would not be making negative comments about the maxim pictures.

  46. Samsamsamsam says:

Well, anyone feels what they feel. But I side with the others who say she is doing what she chose. I don’t see the biggie about Maxim photos in general…I understand why, but at the same time don’t find that it’s too racy, or pandering…Okay, jk, it is meant to be pandering just a little ;)and yes, because of what people say, it is daring. But there seems to be a fine line here between “Independent and do what you want” and “Oh, don’t show your body even if you want to”…To me, it’s just underwear, and I wear it all the time.

Perhaps asking someone to cover up may just be as bossy as “take it off”? On a double-weight scale, like the Libra…But they actually both weigh the same…Yah. I’m sorry that if anyone feels disappointed…I mean I’ve had the same reaction to some celebrities doing the same…But I realized that is not like they are trying to offend anyone, they want to try something, and maybe they do want you know them a little better that they aren’t afraid, that posing doesn’t mean they are giving in? She is not an underaged minor, she is not “asking for it” from pervs.
I came here because I used to watch the Wonder Years saw her face and was like “Hey, where she been?” Maxim…Sure sure. But she wrote a book on math? I didn’t know that…Heh, I think math sucks…I’ll read it when I see it and see what she says about it.

  47. Mistral says:

Why would I be joking about her “celebrating her sexiness”.

Her pics are your typical, cheesy underwear shoot/lad-mag fare. They aren’t “high art”. They aren’t in any way original or groundbreaking. But who cares?

She is not hurting anyone. She is doing it because she feels those types of pics are sexy and fun and wanted a set of her own (maybe you’ve never looked at the Victoria’s Secret catalogue or old pinups and thought “that’s adorable, I’d love to do that once”, but many a gal has).

She had the opportunity and wanted to take it. I checked to see if she really has a PhD, and she doesn’t. However, she co-authored an academic paper with her math prof and she’s written books aimed at making math fun for girls. So, she is smart, educated and successful.

Most of the media messages young girls/women are getting through the media are about sex and sexiness. And, the thing is, they are eating it up right now; many of them seem to believe that being “sexy” is the most important thing. Just look at those stupid Noah Cyrus/Miley Cyrus home videos.

Is there something wrong with being “sexy”. No. I mean, it’s obviously biological. Grow up, attract a mate and all that. But, you definitely don’t see the media pushing the idea that you can be both smart and successful and sexy.

So, maybe Danica’s photo shoot will show girls/young women—and young men—that being smart and educated and successful does not mean you can’t be fun, playful, and a “hottie” too.

Also, let’s face it, Danica is/was an actress. So, she probably wants to get some acting jobs again after she has her baby. Just because she loves math and school, doesn’t mean she doesn’t still love being creative and acting.

  48. eternalcanadian says:

I so dislike Maxim and the women that pose for it. Where is the Maxim for women with naked men on the cover? I’m not talking Playgirl, pff, where are the magazines for women that show men as nothing but sexual objects?

  49. Mistral says:

I’m on board with that idea, Eternalcanad.

  50. thebutlerdidit says:

How many of you remember Karen’s boyfriend from WY? I’ve stumped a few people with this one. Ross from Friends.

  51. Caitlin says:

Hey! Just wanted to let everyone know that the Wonder Years, though not available on DVD, is available on both Netflix and amazon for streaming! I’m only 19 and have fallen in love with the series!!
