Gloria Allred on defending mistresses: “Men need to be accountable for their lives”

gloria-allred2

Gloria Allred has an interview and photo shoot in the current Harper’s Bazaar (the one with Katherine Heigl on the cover), and the whole thing is sort of funny. Actually, my first reaction was “This is tragic” but I’ve decided to just laugh about it. For the photo shoot, Allred is wearing some kind of armor, something that I would imagine would cause an instantaneous yeast infection (for which Allred will sue Harper’s Bazaar, and then the suit of armor). For the interview, Allred defends her cadre of hookers, sluts and post-op trannys with a strident, blasé, faux-feminist attitude. Allred’s clients include everyone from Rachel Uchitel (mistress of Tiger Woods and David Boreanaz) to Joslyn James (porn star mistress of Tiger Woods) to random unnamed Charlie Sheen and David Boreanaz mistresses, to a post-op transvestite named Wellington Houston, who claimed he/she was NOT – for the damn record – boning Matt Lauer. The full piece is online here, and here are some of the highlights:

On taking on controversial celebrity scandals: “I’m not an elected official who puts a finger in the wind to see what the majority thinks; I represent women, whether they’re popular or not,” she says. “In the case of Joslyn James, who had an intimate three-year relationship with Tiger Woods, it’s clear to me that he lied to her and broke her heart. I think that he should acknowledge that to her and should apologize, at minimum.”

On representing the alleged mistresses of famous men: “I can make a statement that men need to be accountable for their lives and they’ll suffer the consequences if they’re not.”

On empowering women: “Male privilege and entitlement are dying a very painful death; no one gives up power without a struggle,” she says. “I live in a war zone, and sometimes it can get very ugly behind the scenes. But the good news is that women are fighting back—and they are winning.”

On the media interest in her high-profile cases: “It’s not my fault if the media and the public are more interested in Tiger Woods than in women farm workers.” (In 2008, Allred’s firm won a $1.68 million settlement for a group of female farm workers in a gender-discrimination lawsuit.)

On fighting against discrimination and abuse: “There are endless new variations on how to hurt a woman physically, emotionally, financially, and socially,” she says. “I have a passion for justice, and I’m a warrior for change.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

Honestly, I believe Allred when she talks about her cases that are really about gender inequalities, discrimination, harassment, or assault. I think in her mind, by fighting for every woman, no matter the circumstance, she is doing feminist work. Sometimes that is the case – but in my opinion, Allred does her reputation and her legit clients a great disservice when she takes on mistresses who are simply looking for a payday. That’s not discrimination, for a woman like Rachel Uchitel to want a payoff from Tiger Woods. That’s just glorified prostitution – which is fine, bitch wanted to get paid, she got her piece, whatever – just don’t wrap it up with the “feminism” bow.

Women need to be accountable for their behaviour as well. Mistresses are just as culpable as the cheaters. It’s not like these skeezes don’t know these men are married.

Kaiser, I could not agree with that last paragraph you wrote more: “Allred does her reputation and her legit clients a great disservice when she takes on mistresses who are simply looking for a payday…just don’t wrap it up with the “feminism” bow.” It seems entirely anti-feminist to suggest that it’s totally the man’s fault and the woman is exempt from any kind of responsibility…what does that make the woman? A mindless fembot who just goes along with whatever the man tells her…and I call bullshit on that. Any woman getting involved with a celebrity knows his marital status and therefore is fully responsible for any of the fallout. Stupid whores.

@ bellaluna that may be true but its the married men who have made a commitment and are more than capable of saying no. temptation is everywhere and if you’ve made a commitment to someone you should honour it. women who cheat on their husbands are not spared any wrath so why spare it for cheating husbands?

@ Amy – Women should have enough respect for one another to stay away from married men. I’m not saying cheating men should be spared wrath, as my ex cheated on me. What I’m saying is women can be our own worst enemies, and that’s just wrong.

I hate the argument that these mistresses “deserve” an apology because they were hurt and lied to. As anyone who has been hurt and lied to by a lover can attest, it does suck, and an apology would be nice, but in no way are you ENTITLED to one, never mind to the extent that you need to get a LAWYER involved. It’s very obvious that it’s BS and all about fame and money because that’s the only difference here.

I totally agree with you. I don’t know why society at large condones grown men behaving like teenagers and insists that women “work things out”, no matter how bad things get.

gloria allred makes me ill. she cares nothing about empowering women or fighting for justice. if she did she would represent women who have been raped, sexually harassed or discriminated against. the women she represents have chosen to be mistresses-knowing full well that these men are married, lying cheaters- but somehow become “victims” when the affair is over. i resent the idea that men are big, mean predators who somehow “tricked” innocent women into an affair, as if we are so stupid we can’t make our own decisions. that is something allred doesn’t seem to understand by portraying these women as emotionally retarded, innocent little girls who need protecting from men. i am an intelligent woman and i don’t need some feather-headed harpy “standing up” for me or making excuses to dismiss my bad choices. part of being equal to men means we have to step up and hold ourselves accountable for our actions, and not because we are good and men are bad but because we are human.

Thanks Gloria, for reminding me why I am not, and never will be, a feminist. I absolutely HATE the way that so many feminists want equal rights, yet completely refuse to realize that with rights comes responsibilities (like taking accountability for having affairs with married men, for example). You cannot have your cake and eat it too, and screaming “B-b-but men do it!!!” is not helping draw most (non-insane) women to your cause. From what I can tell, feminists want to be treated BETTER than, not equal to, men. And I am just not down with that…but then again, I would rather die than work, and am a stay at home housewife stuck in the 50′s so what the hell do I know? LOL!

    bellaluna-

You are absolutely right that women are women’s worst enemies. I have rarely ever had a problem with a man, but women are horrendous creatures and I stay the hell away from them because they cannot be trusted. In my experience, women live to backstab other women, and why would I want to be around that? I think that’s another reason I’m not a feminist, because even though I am a woman, I do not like women and do not understand the jealousy, hatred, backstabbing and just pure evil that women do to each other. They act like children, yet want to be treated like adults? Maybe MEN aren’t the problem….?

That hooker/topless dancer, knew Tiger was married. Kept on shagging him of her own free will. He owes her no apology. The same goes for every female that shagged Jesse James too.

The only cases tacky Gloria will put any time into, are the ones that she gets to hold a press conference about. If it won’t get her on CNN/MSNBC/FOX news, she is not interested.

No woman is entitled to an apology from a man when said woman knowingly becomes involved with him. And no woman involved with a married man, who then announces to the world that she helped him cheat on his wife, is entitled to money from that man.

Both are equally heinous in that regard; the man for cheating, and the woman for demanding compensation for being the person he cheated with.

If you’re a grown woman, and you become involved with a married man knowing that he was married, suck it up and deal with the consequences. Otherwise, I and millions of other women out there will call you an opportunistic whore. And yes, whore fits when you expect to be PAID.

    Karin-

So, the mistress shouldn’t get ANY blame, despite making the decision to sleep with a married man? So you’re saying that women are innocent little victims of the big bad man (who MUST have lied to get in her pants, obviously)? That doesn’t sound too feminist, as it implies that women should not be held accountable for their actions hurting someone else, only the man (OMGZ THE PATRIARCHY!!) is to blame? Women like YOU are why I will never, ever have a woman for a friend, what kind of sick, twisted c*nt does not acknowledge that they are 50% responsible for CHOOSING to sleep with a married man? You are reprehensible and should be ashamed of yourself. I know I am ashamed that you share a gender with me, because women like YOU ruin it for all of us. Despicable.

    32-

Yes I do, and can you blame me? Most of the women I have had the misfortune to make “friends” with have had the same moral code as Karin, so my opinion of women in general is very low. I have never, ever even THOUGHT about messing with a man who is married or in a relationship, and have nothing but contempt, scorn and hatred for women who do (which, unfortunately, seems to be most of them). And the ones who don’t do that crap are still vindictive b*tches who hate you if you have something they don’t. With “friends” like that, why have enemies? And I have enough enemies, I do not need to add to my collection, ya know?

Married people who have extramarital sex are breaking a commitment to their partners, not to their lovers. Elin is the wronged one here, not the mistresses who aided and abetted a philanderer. In some states, these women could be sued for alienation of affection. If we want men to honor their vows, we don’t want to support or reward women who help men break those vows.

And the ones who commit such atrocious crimes as rape, genocide and murder are overwhelmingly men. So yeah, I wouldn’t say you’re a housewife stuck in the 50′s, you’re just a moron :-/

    @daisyfly:

I could not have said it better!

Feminism has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the “morally bankrupt” activities of her clients. They deserve NO APOLOGIES OR COMPENSATION! No one forced them into becoming disposable “sex toys”. They willingly chose to become involved with wealthy, high profile married men strictly for their own personal gain.

If I’m not mistaken, there is an ethical guideline within American law which emphasize that, “In order for alleged victims to receive fair and equitable compensation in the eyes of the law for any harm they may have endured, the injured party has to come before the law with CLEAN HANDS”.

Women who knowingly have affairs with married men, DON’T HAVE CLEAN HANDS which should entitle them to NO COMPENSATION WHATSOEVER! In fact, when they deliberately chose to publicly disclose their transgressions with a married man, they are willfully inflicting harm on both “their partner in crime” and his family. In all fairness, the married man’s family (his spouse and children) should have the right to sue the alleged mistress for the pain and suffering she has maliciously inflicted upon them. In a few states, it is possible to sue for “alienation of affection”; however, I would love to see the wife of a “high profile” married man actually sue one of these “ho-bags” for the “loss of income” and “mental anguish” she has inflicted upon her family because she and her children are “the real” victims in these cases. Gloria Allred is not representing “victims” in these cases, she’s representing “callous”, “self absorbed” OPPORTUNISTS!

Men need to be accountable – and so do women who have affairs with men they know are married. Nah, I don’t think I will do any of that. Maybe I am the problem, either way I don’t really care enough to try and fix it, simply because I don’t feel like I am missing anything. I just do my best to stay away from other women and not interact with them on any level other than basic politeness to another human being. I have very little in common with most of them, have little if anything to say to them, which is OK. I just…opt out of all that BS. Or maybe it’s because I grew up in the DC area, where absolutely everyone is a huge, raging douchebag, ESPECIALLY the women. Maybe my perspective is skewed from that, I don’t know, either way, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. I don’t really hate other women, I just don’t want to be bothered with them, or by them. That’s really all I was trying to say…and point out how nasty they can be. 65. I know this wont make me popular on here, but I totally agree with Gloria. She is kinda slimy to begin with, but think about it. We fight and we fight to be treated fairly by men in life and the work place, and after all these years and all that women have accomplished we are still subjected to the same sexist rules that society lays down for us. For example..do you really think it’s women who are deciding to only have size 1 and under on the cover of magazines? Do you think it’s women who run the media and put out all these sickening standards of what age a woman should be to be considered attractive or worth anything of value? Why are there no female American versions of Jack Nicholson? You know… an actress in her 70′s that still get leads in movies where her male lead love interest are literally 40 years younger than herself?

If a woman has a huge scar on her face and a man a the same scar on his face who do you think society will say is allowed to be flawed and who is not?
How come fat actors like Zack Galifianakis, Kevin James, Jack Black and a slew of others can be major movie stars and get tons of success, but the last and ONLY fat actress we can remember going that far is Roseanne and maybe Queen Latifah, and their careers are almost a decade apart.
There are several small and big sexist rules that still apply in this country and no one wants to say it out loud. Somebody needs to stick it to these men when they misbehave like it’s business as usual. The women are tramps and I have no sympathy for them. But I am glad these men have something to fear as a consequence for their behavior. Because of Gloria, famous men have to really think twice if it’s worth it to slime around and humiliate their wives and family.

Ahhhhhhh!! This woman (if you can even call her that) and sorry excuse for a human being actually makes me ashamed to have a vagina. All of her parading around, creating constant side shows of mistresses and (shamless gold-diggers in general) all in the name of some sort of grossly misguided new sort of “feminism” literally makes me SICK TO MY STOMACH.

“Men need to be held accountable for their actions”? True, but so do the unscrupulous whores who wait around looking to bait famous, very married men (and they ALWAYS know).

What cracks me up the most (besides the fact that Allred equates being a mistress to a plantiff) is the fact that Allred is “defending” the former mistress of David Boreanez in a civil suit on the basis that he “promised that” she was “the ‘only’ other, other, woman” and he lied!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAAHA. This lady is out of her f*cking tree, and a pariah in the legal community.

@kia: “I just do my best to stay away from other women and not interact with them on any level other than basic politeness to another human being. I have very little in common with most of them, have little if anything to say to them, which is OK. I just…opt out of all that BS.”

And yet here you are. Interacting with us all. I assure you that 90% of the posters here are women.

You are soon to have a child. You might want to rethink your decision not to have anything to do with other females as we can be a wealth of knowledge and just plain ‘been there done that’ when it comes to the ins and outs of children.

And what if you have a daughter? She would benefit from knowing more than one woman other than you, surely.

lol first it’s women who are the problem, then it’s DC… This chick has issues *eyeroll*

IDesignBlogs, I’m with you… when we ever achieve equal status, then we can play fair. But, as things stand, women who play fair just don’t get ahead. That’s the law of the land right now. If you’re a decent, hard working female with morals, you kind of have a lot of things working against you. There’s just some misguided idea out there that things are fair and just and equal for women and that just ain’t the case….

If you look at the list of editors in the front of women’s magazines, you will see that most are women. They put on the cover what sells, and right now, it’s a reader’s market with more than a dozen major women’s magazines competing for a shrinking market.

“Somebody needs to stick it to these men when they misbehave like it’s business as usual. “

That somebody is the wife. Just because we don’t like someone’s choices, that does not mean that there is a basis for a lawuit. The only woman who had a legally binding commitment with Tiger was his wife. Tiger did not wrong anyone other than his wife, who is seeking redress through her divorce lawyers.

Feminism aside – as a lawyer – I am at a complete loss as to WTF this has to do with THE LAW. What is she actually doing for these women, other than having press conferences? Is she an agent of some sort, making business deals for them to get famous of their whoredom? She is a LAWYER….as far as I know, you can’t sue FOR AN APOLOGY. What the hell kind of legal rights do these women have that they need her to defend? Unless Tiger “lied” in that he said “I’m going to pay you $X, you quit your job for me, and we have a legally binding contract here” then WTF do they need a lawyer for?? Unless someone committed actual perjury or obstructed a police investigation, I don’t think lying is against the law. And it isn’t Tiger’s fault that porn star is an idiot, even if he is a lying cheat. OMG he LIED??? A married guy cheating on his wife LIED? OMG SUE!!!!! FOR WHAT??????

No matter what platitudes and faux-feminist spin she spews out, she can’t hide the fact that there is NO NEED for her to be involved, except to create the fear of a lawsuit to extort a payout. Have any of these women filed any lawsuits? Not that I know of. Can they? Um, for what? Hurt feelings? Sorry no. How is she “holding them accountable” other than running her mouth? She sure isn’t doing any “lawyering” that I can see…

And she won a gender discrimination suit for female farm workers? Did she demand that female farm workers get shit on in the exact same manner as the male farm workers? Does that help them somehow? Maybe sue for some *fair* treatment in general, no? That didn’t make sense to me either….but at least those women have jobs so…yay?

She doesn’t just give women a bad name, she gives lawyers a bad name as well. And we have enough reputation problems without her help, thankyouverymuch.

‘I Design Blogs’, I hadn’t thought of Allred in that manner, but I kinda see your point.
A lot of people apply a wide, general brush of hatred onto lawyers, but our lives would be a lot harder without them. One of the main reasons that we have the few consumer protection/safety designs built into products that exist in this country is because so many companies got their pants sued off when they ignored safety regulations.
What if Allred actually succeeds in making (if only a few) married men think twice about shacking up with some random chick like their are no consequences. Too often, at least with the very wealthy, there is little recompense for the wives because of pre-nuptial agreements.
I’m not calling her a hero, but I don’t wish her any evil either.

If the woman is called a “mistress,” then as far as I’m concerned, she’s aware that the man is married. It takes two to tango in an affair. I agree men should be held accountable, but women who knew the men’s marital status shouldn’t get a pass. Why don’t these mistress apologize to the wives?

    kia,

I hope for the baby’s sake, you don’t have a daughter, then again, a son might not fare much better, sounds like he might not have a healthy viewpoint of women.

  77. I hate it when people use feminism as a guise for to further their own perverted agendas.

But nice costume though, Gloria Allred. Chronicles of Narnia called and wanted an extra.
