Kelly Osbourne admonishes divas who use the gay community

wenn2875142

Kelly’s purplish hair has started growing on me. I saw on E! News last night where she was laughing about people saying she looked like an old lady, and Kelly said that’s how she wants to look. Cute. I do think this is the healthiest and happiest she’s ever looked, seriously. Kelly continues to win me over with this new-ish interview Kelly did with The Daily Gay. The interview is really long, and you can read the whole thing here. I’m just going to do the highlights, which include Kelly’s praise of Lady Gaga for standing by her gays, as opposed to “women who use the gay community to sell albums, but then they don’t back it up.” CoughMadonnacough? Or is she talking about someone like Cher? Jennifer Lopez? Who uses her gays to sell albums and then discards them like yesterday‘s homosexuals? Also: Kelly is going to be Grand Marshal of LA’s Gay Pride parade! And she’s doing the “Give a Damn” Campaign too.

Congratulations on making People’s Most Beautiful list.
I was really shocked by that. When they called me I was like, When is someone going to tell me that was a joke? When you’re in an industry where you’re surrounded by the world’s most beautiful people—and you know I always grew up really insecure —it’s still like I’m waiting for someone to pinch me and wake me up

In addition to that, you and your mom have been named grand marshals of L.A. Pride.
That’s what I’m more excited about. You have no idea. I guarantee I won’t sleep the night before.

How does that happen? Do you get a call from someone saying, “Hey, we want you to come and be in the parade”?
Basically, my assistant Dave and I have been talking about Pride for a long time and what we were going to do, and he has some friends—as well as I do—who are on the committee, and he secretly went and suggested me.

It’s cool that you and your mom are from different generations and are equally vocal in your support for the gay community. But do you have a sense that your generation is more accepting overall?
I do. And I think as time goes on—and unfortunately, it is going to take time—eventually people won’t even think of it anymore.

Have your own struggles lead to an identification with gay people?
It’s not about identifying, it’s about what’s right and what’s wrong. And it’s wrong to look down upon somebody or not let somebody marry the person they want to marry because of their sexual orientation. It doesn’t make sense to me.

You were born in England, which allows civil unions and gays in the military. What are your observations about the cultural differences between the U.K. and the U.S.?
No matter where you go, you’re always going to have ignorant people. But it’s the way in which it’s handled in England that I think is a lot more respectful. They’re like, “If you don’t like it, fine, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be married.” Here it’s like, “It’s an abomination! We’re all going to die and go to hell because you want to kiss a man!” It’s ridiculous.

So they have more of a live-and-let-live attitude?
It’s hard to explain unless you are there. It would be wrong for me to say that you can be gay in England and everything’s just fine, because there are still ignorant people. But I think people are less inclined to do anything against it there than they are here.

When did you first realize that you had a big gay following?
I still don’t realize it, to be honest with you. I feel that a lot of celebrity females take advantage of the gay community because they know that if they have the gay community supporting them, then they’ll always have some kind of a career. I never want to be one of those [women]. In my eyes, that’s almost taking advantage. And a lot of the time, what I think about what they do is, Well, you say all this, but where are you at the rallies?

You prefer people who walk the walk.
Exactly. There are women, like Lady Gaga, who fully embrace it and who stand up. They go to the rallies, they protest. But then there are women who—I’m not going to name names—that use the gay community to sell albums, but then they don’t back it up. And I don’t like that.

If there were one thing that could change in the entire world by the end of this year, in any realm, what would you like to see happen?
That the government can no longer tell people who they can and cannot be with. For me, that’s the most pressing thing. Once that falls into place and people start to realize that there really is no difference, then everything else will also fall into place.

[From The Daily Gay]

Doesn’t Kelly seem like a sweetheart? I like the way she’s grown up, a lot. Notice the difference in arguments that Kelly is making as opposed to, say, Miley Cyrus. Granted, there’s an age difference. But Miley should definitely take some pointers from Miley. Ooh, do you think that’s who Kelly’s little blind item was about? Miley kind of fits – she’s trying to get the gays to buy her album, but is Miley really going to stand up for them in a big way? Whatever divas use their gay fans? Amy Winehouse?!?

    Is her hair grey?
She looks beautiful btw, I just don’t get the hair. It was lavender before.

  2. Carrie says:

She’s growing up nicely, which is always good to see.

I wonder if she is talking about Katy Perry? With the whole “I Kissed A Girl” song…

  3. Anonandonandon says:

Take that Margaret Cho! The day gay people are finally treated as equals in this country a lot of entertainers will have to find other jobs.

  4. glowkey says:

How can Lady Gaga technically count as someone who doesn’t just use the gay community to sell albums…hasn’t she already identified herself as gay/bi? So she’s not really on the “outside” voicing support but she would actually be considered part of the “gay community” itself, right? She stands up, goes to rallies, and protests because it affects her as well, not just because she’s a straight person who finds homophobia in general to be an abomination.

  5. Q says:

She’s awesome. I dislike that she had to lose a ton of weight for people to realize that she’s a beautiful person, but at the same time, it seems like she did it for herself, not for anyone else. And she looks so healthy and radiant.

The hair is strange, but I dig it.

  6. jane16 says:

I agree that she looks better than she ever has; still, its puzzling. The hair, makeup, jewelry & that sequiny thing she has on all look like old lady stuff. Are we going back to 50’s type hair I wonder?

  7. Diva says:

Ah, she’s adorable! LOVE her stand and commitment to it!

  8. snowball says:

She was awesome on the show, she’s never taken any shit and I love that she’s kept that, although I agree, it’s sad that it’s taken her losing weight for so many people to notice her.

I love all of her look but the hairstyle. The color is fine, but the Queen Elizabeth bouffy curl thing loses me.

  9. Cinderella says:

I think Kelly’s blind may be referring to Ms. Aguilera.

  10. Gabby says:

Maybe, and I really mean just maybe, she is talking about Xtina?? They did had some sort of feud a few years ago, and she probaly didnt want to name her to avoid bring that to light again, but Xtina does come to my mind regarding this.

Apparently is the new hype, and she was in OUT Mag last month talking about her “gaylords” and how girls are hot, trying to board the BI bandwagon and pulling out at the last minute, etc, but all came out a little fake and forced to me. Like she was saying that to just get the gay community to buy her stuff, and give people something “shocking” to talk about.

I’m not saying she can’t or don’t have any gay friends, she probably does, but I’m just not sure if she walk the walk and really embraces the community like Kelly is pointing out.

  11. KO says:

Anonandonandon – what are you talking about? Margaret Cho has been an advocate for GLBT rights for years.

  12. Eileen Yover says:

Her outfit is adorable and she sounds so grown up and well spoken! The Osbourne’s is still the primo best reality show ever! And it was one of the first to be shot of a famous family.

  13. Q says:

The saddest part of her blind item is that we can easily rattle off a half-dozen female entertainers who fit the description.

  14. lrm says:

i have to post about margaret cho, as well…i think she is bi, and yes, she has always been a gay rights advocate-very strongly, both in her act and off-stage,politically.
not sure what you mean by ‘take that’??? have you seen her perform?

oh,and i agree-which female pop artists DON’T use gays to sell albums, is more the question. All of them do.

That said, Madonna has never been ‘all talk no action’-she’s never talked about it much, has she? vs. the new kids on the block who use it b/c it’s trendy. Say what you will bout xtina, but she did a stand up job doing beautiful at the GLTB awards a few years ago…very professional, supportive and respectful.

Lastly, People must mean beautiful inside and out…cuz kelly is cute and growing up beautifully, but c’mon-most beautiful in the world? she looks great in these pics…but still.

  15. Anonandonandon says:

    @KO
You’re right. My statement was mainly about how Margaret Cho is one of those powerfully unfunny comedians whose entire act is pandering to gay men. Just like how Janeane Garofalo panders to the ultra left. Take away their brown-nosing and they don’t have much of an act. In fact, if Margaret Cho wasn’t Asian and didn’t pander to gay people she wouldn’t have an act at all. In summation, Margaret Cho isn’t funny at all. Also, Janeane Garofalo.

Oh, and for this post I am an Asian lesbian woman so you’ll have to judge my statement on it’s own merit. Muhahahaha!

  16. Demos says:

    Anonandonandon:

Damn straight! I can’t stand “comedians” who are essentially just preachers.

It’s like, why the hell is Doonesbury on the “funny” pages when 99% of the time it’s nothing but Gary Trudeau acting smug?

  17. missmilly says:

Um yes, some people think that it is gross seeing two dudes kiss. I mean—hello???????? Your telling me that if you saw your dad or grampa making out with a dude you would be like…oh, that’s cool. EU….watching anyone make out is always awkward–but watching two dudes…hmmm, something doesnt fit right. Slot 1 goes into Slot 2 but when it can’t because there are 2 slots then what????

    LOL….this outta stir people up.

Lesbians on the other hand…..since I am a woman I just have to stand up for other women. Scratch everything above then. Maybe it’s a man thing! 🙂 Yes, I just contradicted everything I just typed up above. Don’t you love free speech!

  18. JuiceinLA says:

Perhaps Madonna doesn’t do much now, but in the 1980s and 1990s she was a tireless (and one of the very first most fearless) crusader for Gay Rights, AIDS awareness etc- so if Memaw Madge rides the coattails of her past, I think I am ok with it.

Do we throw Kathy Griffith under the bus on the blind item? What about Elton John or Poophead Hilton? Yea why not, they both exploit their own community if you think about it?

    re: “Cho”- isnt she gay?

  19. El Predicto says:

I’d like to admonish Kelly Osbourne for using the GRAY COMMUNITY! Get your own damn hair color and GET OFF MY LAWN!

  20. Kaiser says:

Cinderella & Gabby – OH! Yes, she probably is talking about XTina. That makes sense.

  21. Maritza says:

She has matured into a wonderful young lady, she looks great too.

  22. Tigerlily says:

She means Katy Perry. Never hav I heard a bigger insult to the lesbian community then “I kissed a girl”. Even if Perez is her bff I’ve never seen her at any type of lgbt events unless to perform and get more gays to buy her album. You’d think that a chick who essentiially used the Lesbian taboo to launch her career could *at least* do a “no on prop 8” photoshoot to support the cause…

  23. Anonandonandon says:

    @lrm
Did you read my whole comment or just the first sentence?

Yes, I have seen Margaret Cho perform. I’ve seen more than one of her shows. That’s why I said what I said and I know I’m not alone in saying it. Google unfunny comedians and you’ll find her listed more than a few times with comments just like mine. My point, once again, I don’t think she is funny. Almost her entire act is a shout-out to the gay community. There is no other content. Maybe some people like her, I don’t. I prefer my comedians funny, that’s all. To each their own. Maybe she’s bi (easily faked by women seeking attention) and yes she’s fights for gay rights but without her gay following she probably would have fallen off the face of the earth long ago.

  24. KLaw says:

How does she have such a tiny waist but large upper legs? Oh well, doesn’t matter, she beautiful. LOVE the hair.

  25. marge says:

she makes me think of Meryl Streep in Devil wears Prada with that hair…

  26. erika says:

@klaw — gee, I dunno, maybe that’s how she’s shaped? Every woman has a particular shape (hourglass, apple, pear, banana, whatever) that determines how their body deposits fat, no matter their weight. Even when she was heavier, her waist was slimmer than her legs.

She’s lovely, and I’m glad she backs up her beliefs with action — and tactfully admonishes those who do not.

  27. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

She doesn’t like Katy Perry either, so she is probably talking about her too.

  28. notsoanonymous says:

From what I know, Lady Gaga has only pulled a ‘Jillian Michaels’ regarding her sexuality – the whole “I just LOVE love, all kind of love, blah blah blah”

Anyone know if she has identified outright in the press?

I can’t help but love Kelly. She has done nothing but prove, over and over again, that you can rebound from bad decisions and become a better person. 🙂

  29. My2Cents says:

She is so lovely. Her whole family is. She rocks that look and its her own. I dont know anyone else that could pull it off as good as she does.

  30. Emily says:

Yeah, I reckon she’s talking about Katy Perry, too. That bitch plays up the camp, and sings about kissing girls when it suits her, but doesn’t actually back it up with anything substantial.

  31. Perla says:

Kathy Griffin goes to equality rallies and speaks to the crowd. I think Beyonce and Britney are singers who don’t do much at all for their gay fans. Nada.

  32. Shay says:

Everyone uses everyone to get ahead in show business. Who the hell is Kelly Osbourne to judge? She is just as nasty as her mother, IMO and of no relevance. Just because her career is a non-career, she feels the need to blast others. Kelly, get a real job!
She is only famous for being the offspring of Ozzy Osbourne, and little else. What has she achieved other than being a brat?

  33. Ellie says:

i’ve never been a fan of madonna, but she still supports the gay community. she just helped orchestrate the release of a gay couple from a malawian jail.

if that’s not support, i don’t know what is.

  34. mln says:

am I the only one who remember what dave chapelle said after Kelly came out with her madonna cover “papa don’t preach, how about daughter don’t sing.” I am sure she’s just jealous.

  35. a_elise says:

    @El Predicto

    You, my dear, are hilarious.

  36. Lexicon says:

I think she is adorable and right on with her comments.

  37. Me says:

I love women like her. They have made me look 26 for the past 8 years already. So keep it up and thanks!

  38. chantelle says:

you people really do possess the memory of a goldfish! since when is the osbourne family the beacon of refined shows and kelly a polished, dainty lady which gives nobel prize worthy social commentaries? isnt is the same crass family with the deadbeat dad, the vulture mum, the junkie bro and the fat-girl-angst daughter who is only relevant for the weight she loses and gains back and the miserable cover of “papa dont preach”? I couldnt care less for the tit showing, attention seeking, cankle having katty perry but I dont like the way she is demonized for speaking her mind. The minute somebody says something that shows individuality, the politically correct presumably gay advocating police must have him or her punished. what the idiot gays do not understand is that this is a fickle situation which reeks insincerity-the minute they are no longer usable as buyers or consumers the are disposable. I cannot believe that gays still may support madonna-she has used and abused them for so many years copycatying their mannerisms, stealing their identity, mimicking and eventually degrading their community! yeah kelly you fat pig try to ride her coattails in a vain attempt to get somebody to care about you and give you some money! Katy Perry for the win!!!

  39. mike says:

Margaret Cho is funny as hell. So ok you don’t think she’s funny.

    Big woopty doo.

She makes tons of money, in fact, she’s one of the most successful female comedians out there.

She no more panders to gays than Ben Stiller panders to dumb jocks or Chris Rock panders to blacks.

  40. mike says:

To be fair to Katy Perry, “I Kissed a Girl” was never meant to be a lesbian anthem. I mean, the lyrics make it very clear that she’s not talking about lesbianism as much as just playing around and experimenting and turning onlooking guys on.

For Pete’s sake, she repeatedly sings it [lesbianism] is not what good girls are supposed to do and that it don’t mean she’s in love [for kissing a girl].

For the kicker, she sings it doesn’t matter she doesn’t know the name (of the girl she kissed) because it’s just an experiment.

Yeah, she played along when lesbians jumped onboard enough to invite her to sing at Dinah Shore, but don’t blame her for cashing in at unexpected success.

The song was never meant to uplift lesbians, nor was it intended to mislead lesbians into thinking that way (just listen to the lyrics!). No it was pure and simple a catchy pop tune for straight guys and gals.

  41. Anonandonandon says:

    @mike
Carrottop and Dane Cook are very successful as well. Still, unfunny.

  42. Johnthing says:

That hairdo is Waaaaay too old for her.

  43. Toe says:

I hope she put the purple back in her hair. I wish i could make my hair that color.

  44. omondieu says:

I’ve always had a soft spot for Kelly, and I like how she’s matured. I also love that leopard blazer-thing she’s wearing!

I like Lady Gaga a lot, but her sexual orientation (in addition to many, not all, other young starlets who claim they’re bisexual–Megan Fox comes to mind) bothers me. They use the “bisexual” card as entry into an intricate, marginalized community so that they automatically have a gay following. They claim that as “bisexuals”, they understand the plight and oppression of their queer siblings, when in fact, all they do is randomly hook up with same-sex partners, or appear with them in music videos and promotional photos. When it comes to true matters of the heart, to marriage/life commitment, they quickly state that they want a partner of the opposite sex. There are TRUE bisexuals, who are actually attracted to, and become emotionally involved with both men and women, and then there are those who exploit the label to appear edgy, to gain easy access to the gay community. It also demonizes real bisexuals, making them appear insincere about their orientation.

Lady Gaga, in my opinion, is one of these people. I know very little about her romantic life, so if anyone can come to her defense, by all means, I’d like to know!

  45. Kim says:

Gotta love an uneducated druggie spewing wax on social issues =( ugh!

  46. Anna says:

    That’s not purple, it’s GRAY!

  47. Eileen Yover says:

chantalle: If I had been the daughter of a celebrity getting in every where I want and having everything at my whim I would have turned out a lot worse than she has. She made some mistakes, had the common sense enough to take herself to rehab by herself, and get her sh!t together. Most girls in Hollywood her age and even older haven’t gotten as far as she has with getting on the right path.
And HELLO-please name any celebrity with a squeaky clean past…including Katy Perry (who I love by the way)??

I’m all about people having opinions but your comment reeks of nastiness. The girl is a size 6! And even when she was a 12-who the f-ck cares what size she is? She’s not allowed to be interviewed and give opinions? Stick to the subject and quit sounding so bitter.

  48. chantelle says:

    Dear eillen yover

it is sad when people are inconsistent even within the same post-you “dictate” me to stick in the subject when
    a) the subject itself is commenting on the comments of ms osbourne b) you repeat my “mistake” by commenting on the same irrelevant subjects namely ms osbourne’s weight and drug past. unless of course you think that everything is fine for gays (as a general group of people) and they are not swindled and used (even more than straight people, women, teenagers, minorities etc) just to become rabid consumers so really there is no problem and nothing to see here. and we can all go back to work folks!
provided that we accept that all the famous people involved in this information bit (perry, gaga, osbourne) have their fair share in exploiting the gay community (the analysis of omondieu is excellent) then osbourne is the most despicable of all because she has offered no added or even entertainment value-just b*tching!

I could also comment on your preposterous idea that kids from rich households are always “bad eggs” but I believe you understand yourself how unfounded this is. Finally spare me from your characterizations “bitter” etc. I could also say that you are a “fatty”-it seems I pushed a button there with the weight comments, but it is not high school here I believe

  49. I Choose Me says:

“vs. the new kids on the block who use it b/c it’s trendy.”

FYI Jonathan Knight of NKOTB is gay. Has been for years. Has been living openly as a gay man for years. It’s only out in the press now because the group reunited and are performing again.

  50. Naomi says:

I feel rather indifferent towards her, but I do like the way she talks. Seems smart and down to earth.

Btw, […But Miley should definitely take some pointers from Miley.] Think you made a mistake there. 😛

  51. Blaster says:

    @Kaiser and Cinderella

I don’t think she’s talking about Christina. I think it’s most likely Madonna or an older singer.

Remember Christina’s “Beautiful” video where she had transgendered and gay men and all other minorities and she won GLAAD or LGBT award for the video? She’s always been vocal about her support for the gay and transgendered community and never, ever flaky.

    What about Britney Spears?
