Serena Williams wins Wimbledon, talks body image & refusal to diet

On Saturday, Serena Williams won her fourth Wimbledon title. Her sister Venus has five – so you know Serena is going to keep on until she at least ties with her big sister. Before she even flew to Wimbledon, Serena participated in a photo shoot and interview with Harper’s Bazaar. While I like that Serena is confident in herself enough to pose in a bathing suit in a fashion magazine, I think the Bazaar people might hate her? Why did they do that to her hair? Is that a wig or a hairstyle? Because it makes Serena look just terrible. Anyway, the interview is interesting – Serena talks a lot about body image and the comparisons to her sister. The full piece is here, and here are some highlights:

After she won the Australian Open in January she worked out a lot: “I wanted to get really fit. I wanted to lose some weight. So I’ve been doing Pilates and yoga, trying to lean out my body so I won’t be bulky.” Her regimen: Pilates two or three times a week and when she’s training for a tournament, “a couple of hours of hitting, then an hour or two of cardio and strengthening in the gym.” Also, when she’s at home in L.A., she runs the half mile up a hill to Venus’s house instead of driving.

But no dieting. “I don’t even know the D word,” she says with a laugh. There is a training eating plan, though: “Smaller portions of every meal, a lot of grilled or baked chicken or fish, and steamed veggies.” Her weakness? “ I can never turn down a good piece of cherry pie, but,” she continues, “all I know is that in 10 years, I don’t want to be as wide as this couch.”

It’s working: Williams, who adds that “Pilates gave me results within a week,” looks the best she’s ever looked and is now a size 10 instead of a 12.

“Owning” her athleticism: “When I was six or seven in a swimsuit—I look back at those picture, and my arms are cut and my legs are strong,” she says. “I didn’t realize that I was really fit and most people aren’t. To this day, I don’t love my arms. People want more fit arms, but my arms are too fit. But I’m not complaining. They pay my bills.”

Serena’s body comparison to Venus: “I was 23 when I realized that I wasn’t Venus. She’s totally different,” she explains. “I’m super curvy. I have big boobs and this massive butt. She’s tall and she’s like a model and she fits everything. I was growing up, wanting to be her, wanting to look like her, and I was always fitting in her clothes, but then one day I couldn’t.” She pauses. “But it’s fine. Now I’m obviously good, but it’s a weird thing.”

On her favorite body parts: “Since I don’t look like every other girl, it takes a while to be okay with that. To be different. But different is good,” she says. She’s loving her new bob too. “I feel so much sexier with short hair. I wanted to reach inside me and feel better. I don’t want to hide behind a facade of hair.” Her favorite part of her body? “My smile. Does that count? I think a smile can make your whole body. Models, they look fabulous, but they don’t smile and they look so mad. But I like my smile, how it’s bright and it’s nice. Good thing my braces worked out.”

On her former relationship with rapper Common: She was dating the rapper and actor Common, but they broke up in April. “his schedule is actually worse than mine,” she sighs. “He didn’t want the responsibility. It’s really tough.” Common then began promoting his latest film, heaping enough praise on Williams that people assumed they were still on. (“Beautiful, intelligent woman, fun and spiritual woman. I think she’s an incredible person,” he told Access Hollywood.) Williams looks befuddled—befuddled but coquettish. “So I called him and I was like, Why are you saying all this stuff when we’re not together?”

I actually forgot that she and Common were dating, and that they had broken up. They kept their relationship quiet, didn’t they? And I like Common better now that I know that he not only dated Serena, but said nice things about her afterwards. That’s classy.

Anyway, thankfully Serena didn’t wear one of the borderline-obscene outfits that she and her sister seem to love. Instead she chose a more traditional flouncy white skirt and a little shrug-type cover (that she took off when she played). She looked really good!

  1. bite me says:

    congrats Serena

  2. Unlike the other Grand Slam destinations, Wimbledon has a very strict dress code (eg, that’s why everyone wears all white) hence no fun fashion moments

  3. Marie says:

That’s not Serena in that outfit.

  4. mln says:

She’s won me over, people love to trash her for her outfits (which are in general horrible) but what an example she is especially in a sport like tennis. Yes Wimbeldon is much stricter than the other grand slams and the most prestigious. Congrats to her on winning it.

  5. Jen says:

Great tennis players, but holy hell, those Williams sisters are trannylicious.

  6. Beth says:

Players are required to where only white so very few fashion statements. A couple of years ago when Roger Federer started wearing a dinner-type jacket on court it was a huge fashion statement. I do like the littl jacket Serena is wearing. I also didn’t know she ad Common brokeup.

  7. gee_gee says:

I love her! I don’t care if people think she is mannish. She is a badass bitch. And is it wrong that I secretly giggled when she threatened that referee last year? Well, so be it. I am also aiming for a size ten. Thank you Serena. I am heading off to my Pilates trainer.

  8. Rachum says:

It’s insane that she gets so much bad press for her figure. The woman is an athlete, an incredible one at that! Yet being female we must reduce judgement ofher down to the fact that she is ‘manly’ and not model shaped. I think she is amazing, killer guns!

  9. Sarah says:

    She’s awesome. I love Serena.

  10. canadianchick says:

Congrats! Sounds like she’s matured a bit since her freakout last year. I admire both sisters-Hear them rawr!

  11. la chica says:

love her. congrats princess. now get #5 next year!

  12. lucy2 says:

I agree Rachum. It’s sad that this incredibly talented professional athlete who has had huge success in her sport is reduced to talking about how she looks in clothes and what size she wears.

  13. snowball says:

I’d pee my pants if I had to play against her. Well, against most of the women lately. Crap, they’re all about 6′ now and look stronger and bigger than half the men.

I never can figure out how Serena manages to put on all that muscle and still keep those big ol’ boobs. They must be a pain to work around when she plays, probably literally. Most of the other players are flat as boards, even the really muscular ones.

I love Common, he’s always so cool and suave anyway, it’s awesome that he said such nice things about Serena, though it’s weird that if she was dating him and supposedly would know him so well that she’d be surprised that he’d be cool with her still. Did she dump him and expect him to be bitter?

  14. nate says:

Amazing athlete with an amazing athletic body. It is no surprise to me that she has struggled with her body shape and image, but I am glad to hear she is accepting herself even in this “white is right” society.

  15. Cheyenne says:

“Smaller portions of every meal, a lot of grilled or baked chicken or fish, and steamed veggies.”

Most sensible eating advice I’ve read to date. She can treat herself to the cherry pie once in a while.

  16. grrrlgrace says:

I don’t love all of her clothes, either, but I’m guessing girl doesn’t care. Now if we could only convey these messages of individuality and confidence to our lady tweens/teens…we’d be in great shape!

  17. DrM says:

I don’t think either of the Williams sisters care too much if people think they are ‘mannish, trannylicious’ or whatever else they get called…they can go wherever, do whatever, with whomever for as loooooooooooooooong as they like…like gf said her arms pay the bills!

  18. Jen says:

Her smile is definitely very bright and very nice. She’s got a gorgeous smile.

  19. Sincerity says:

It’s always nice to see someone who’s actually reaping the benefits from their hard work and dedication. Congratulations to Serena! May she enjoy many more years of continued success. You go, girl!!!

  20. Embee says:

Congrats, Serena. You are an amazing tennis player and a great role model. And your smile is absolutely mesmerizing.

  21. RHONYC says:

    she’s a…

    brick.

    (bum badda)

    hoooouse.

    🙂

  22. craigc says:

why do all black girls try so hard to have white people hair?

  23. Kim says:

Craigc, Actually Its Indian hair or Asian Hair which is superior to white people hair.Don’t get it twisted, boo

  24. Raven says:

Two women tennis stars in the same family–quite an accomplishment! I know very little about their upbringing. I’m assuming their parents got them on the court very young. And they really must have sacrificed so both could get the necessary training. Usually families have to sacrifice a lot to get even one kid trained.

  25. fashionfreak says:

    lmao @ kim…so true

  26. She is more consistant and plays more than Serena.
