29 year-old Australian Michael Johns was cut from American Idol last night. His dismissal came as a surprise, as he’s never been in the bottom three and was expected to continue on the show. He gave a rousing performance of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” on Tuesday, and although Simon called him “an impersonation of a rock star…. wannabe-ish” and Randy used his common complaint that Johns had “pitch problems,” the overall comments were positive, and Paula said “You sound as good as you look… you were unbelievable.” I really thought he brought it this week and was surprised he was cut.
Most everyone expected either Carly Smithson or Syesha Mercado to go, and they were both in the bottom three with Johns. TMZ even claimed to have a relatively foolproof method of predicting the losers - TiVo viewings by Idol. According to TiVo insiders, Syesha’s performance was the least viewed, which suggested she would go. Syesha did an artistically beautiful version of Fantasia Barrino’s “I Believe,” but judges said it lacked Fantasia’s emotion and power. She really can sing, and I’m glad to see her continue. Carly Smithson was a mess, in my opinion. She did Queen’s “The Show Must Go On,” and it’s kind of amazing that she got more votes than Johns this week.
Here are the videos of Johns’ performance and his elimination. When Ryan says that Michael got the lowest number of votes the crowd boos and Carly says “no!” Ryan says “last year on ‘Idol Gives Back’ we didn’t eliminate anyone at this stage of the competition. Tonight we’re going to say goodbye to Michael Johns.”

I have refused to watch AI since Chikeze got eliminated. He was my favorite. David Cook is good too but without Chikeze this show is boring as hell. I’m pretty much over it.

They don’t care, they do it for ratings. Add shock to the show, more people will watch.
-
Well at least now we’ll have more time for that porn video we were working on together.

It’s a shocker, but it could also be a blessing in disguise. Two Words - Chris Daughtry.

Yea I think Chris Daughtry will probably be in my video too.

In my opinion, contestant, “KRISTY LEE COOK” is the one with immense luck and a far cry from the rest of the contestants who really are talented. I am a singer myself, so I do know when it comes to singing in tune and about notes. Sorry to say, but she looks fantastic, but lacks what it takes to be a real singer. Michael Johns is a good singer, and itz a pity to see him go at this point. Sayesha and kristy shouldve leaft one after the other.

I’m glad he’s gone, he always reminded me of a male version of Professor Umbridge from Harry Potty. He had a weird toady mouth that made me just CRINGE. Ugh!
Jason is my favorite, just because I love that Jack Johnson-ish feel. And he did my favorite version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow last week so that won MAJOR point with me.

You don’t really want to win American Idol anyway. If you do you are a slave to the machine.
You want to stay in there long enough to get some exposure so that someone will want to give you a record deal and not the restrictive, we own your ass for all eternity, you are our whore one that you get when you win this crapfest.

I thought it was so rude weather or not they had ryan say it or he just made it up him self. But, for saying we did not eliminate anyone for last years Idol gives back but this year they do. That was pretty shaddy.

He was my favorite. I’m really bummed about this

I thought the way that he was eliminated was kind of mean-spirited, but I know, it was done for the shock value. I don’t know how much of that was Ryan’s doing or if it was just the producers.
I thought he sang pretty good, and he was very easy on the eyes.
