Barbara Walters cheated on the men she bedded, incl. Alan Greenspan

The National Enquirer has the details from Barbara Walters’ upcoming book, Audition: A Memoir, which includes all the affairs she had - when she was married, when she was single with married men, and when she was single with men you might consider fug who happened to be powerful. Walters promoted the book by confessing to Oprah of an affair 30 years ago with married US senator Edward Brooke. Brooke’s wife passed away 13 years ago, and The Enquirer reports that an insider claims “she hated Barbara Walters till the day she died” and blamed her for their divorce. Wikipedia says 88 year-old Brooke now lives in Miami with his second wife and has two daughters and a son. He has refused to comment about Walters’ memoir and their supposed affair.

78 year-old Walters figures she may as well open the floodgates on her past since no one else is going to cash in on it for her. She was married and divorced three times and has plenty of stories to tell. Other men she had relationships with include former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, former Bear Sterns CEO Alan Greenberg, and Virginia Senator John Warner. (Before he was a Senator.)

Here’s the Enquirer’s details of her affair with a married man. Although they don’t specify exact dates, if it was shortly after her first marriage ended she would have been around 30.

Next up [after her failed first marriage of three years] was a clandestine affair with a married man named Claude Phillippe, the head of catering at several Posh NY hotels.

“He knew all about wine, food, restaurants and was the epitome of sophistication. He started to call. I was thrilled. And so began two of the most romantic years of my life. I wasn’t thinking of marrying again, so his being married didn’t bother me…” says Barbara

The Enquirer says that Barbara then met her second husband, theatrical producer Lee Gruber, on a blind date, and divorced him after 10 years. They adopted a baby daughter together in 1968, when Barbara was 39. Next was her affair with senator Brooke for several years.

After that affair came tumbling down, she moved on to Alan Greenspan, John Warner before he was a senator and again after his divorce from Liz Taylor, and Alan ‘Ace’ Greenberg. In 1986, she was married for a third time to producer Merv Adelson. That marriage only last six years.

Maybe we can assume Walters had it the hardest for Brooke, since that’s who she’s talking about after all this time. The lady is 78 years old, though, and she gave marriage a try a few times. She cheated but she’s open about it. And it sounds like her last secret affair was with Brooke, and that was over 30 years ago.

As for Star Jones, who lit into Barbara for telling it like it is about the way Star lied about her gastric bypass surgery and got freebies for her wedding by mentioning sponsors on The View - Barbara says “Poor woman, she’s gone through so much.” I love it.

We created the inset image of some of Barbara’s lovers, but credit goes for the idea to The National Enquirer. Barbara Walters is shown in the header on at the 2008 AARP Inspire Awards on 12/3/07, thanks to PRPhotos.

Update: I was wrong that the last time Walters cheated was with Brooke. The NY Post reports today that she was sleeping with the two Alans at the same time, and that before that she was cheating on Edward Brooke with Alan Greenberg. Edward Brooke had asked his wife of 30 years for a divorce so he could be with Barbara in the open, reports The Post, but she then dumped him after a Nixon cabinet member told her the affair was a liability to her career. Damn Barbara!

They quote a conservative media group as saying “Barbara has now sunk to the very level of other attention-starved celebrities such as Paris Hilton or even Steve-O from ‘Jackass.’ ”

  2. I lose more and more respect for this woman every couple of months. She is a vindictive, catty little thing with no respect for anyone including herself.

It didn’t matter that the dude was married because she wasn’t interested in getting remarried? Tell that to his wife.

I know it’s a man’s choice to cheat but any woman who can help him out without a twinge of sympathy for the other woman is a selfish little hag. (Not knowing he was married or being told he is separated does not count.)

Sorry, but if she’s confessing all of this because, in her mind, it seems glamorous and adventurous and exciting - well, I wish she’d shut the hell up. She’s a pathetic ignored old lady who’s needing some attention.

Anyone who’s ever been cheated on in a marriage doesn’t think it’s interesting to read her little diddies about how much of a human garbage can she is. If I ever thought she was interesting and professional before…I don’t now.

What an idiot. Way to go, Babs.

  5. There is no way I will ever read her book. Just reading about her affairs (in the media) with married men make me ill. She didn’t seem to really care about the wives and how an affair would affect children involved.Speaking from experience, its a terrible thing to go through. BW seems like a very selfish person. I can’t believe she sold herself out like this(revealing her dirty laundry) -very classless-
I have totally lost respect for her.

  7. My thoughts exactly, Bodhi. I guess I should know by now that public behavior and bedroom behavior are not related, but I just really thought she was more of a lady. And had better taste.

  10. Damn. I had no idea Babs was such a little tomkitty. I’m not at all offended by her past affairs, and I’ve definitely had a cheating spouse. Or two. I could never quite get as pissed at the other women, though, as I felt they really didn’t owe me anything. The husbands were the ones who made vows not to cheat, not every other female on the planet.

    Rock on, Babs!

  11. I think she is trying to show herself as some great love stricken heroine who just couldn’t find the man. But, as Bodhi says, she comes off as a major ho bag (Yes, I called Barbara Walters a ho bag). Elizabeth Taylor she is not. Headache is right on about the marriages and cheating, etc.

Why do I even comment anymore? I should just say Syko, Headache, Geronimo and Bodhi, I agree??? lol (Well, geronimo, when you comment on this, I agree)

  13. I think she’s so self centered she wants to brag about her trysts. She just comes off as an old ho. Would have been much more juicy as an autobiography after she’s gone from this earth.

  16. Jeez I wish this woman would just go away. When she is on the view she screws up the entire show. She can’t complete a thought, and is so out of step with the rest of the panel. To see Whoopi kiss her a– is just painful!

  17. I agree that it takes two to tango. However, if you know a man is married, then walk away, regardless of whether you are single or not. Shame on both parties involved, not just the married man who is breaking his vows.
Its very selfish for both of them not to think of the concequences involved for everyone.

  18. Diva, there are numerous derogatory names for male cheaters…womanizers, p. crazy, p. hunters. Many words that start with a certain female part.
