Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is now the highest paid writer in Hollywood. He recently signed a $100 million deal for his work on the show, and apparently with increased money comes an increased sense of responsibility. MacFarlane says he’s swearing off pot because of some bad experiences he’s had recently.
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has vowed to stop smoking marijuana because it makes him too paranoid.
MacFarlane signed a $100 million deal with 20th Century Fox in May, in a move which will make him the highest-paid writer-producer in television - and he’s determined to increase his productivity by swearing off illegal drugs.
He says, “I don’t smoke much pot anymore. One of the last times I was stoned, I was convinced that I would die unless I kept moving my body. So I sat there, baked, waving my arms around like a crazy person.”

I’m guessing the voice of Stewie came to him while he was high. No way could a totally sober person think up an evil talking baby with an erudite, quasi-British accent. That’s like when my English teacher tried to convince me Lewis Carroll wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland without ever touching a drug. Nice try, but I’m not quite that dumb.
I’ve heard some stories of the bad trips that caused people to stop whatever drug(s) they were into. I’ve got to say, moving your body a lot certainly isn’t the worst of it. But more power to him.

There goes the show….

He needs better connections…..

The Family Guy, Robot Chicken and Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Adult Swim help get me through the week. And there is no doubt in my mind that there is substantial amounts of maryjane being smoked while writing those shows. Don’t do it Seth!!!
-
doesn’t it seem like Seth took ideas from South Park and the Simpsons and made his own show but not as funny?
-
@Steph: he calls it parody, but it’s ripping off. I liked Family Guy before it started doing “parodies.” Now it’s like he can’t think of his own material. Mike Groening has a clip on YouTube making fun of how much Family Guy copies the Simpsons. Priceless!
If I had $100 million, you better believe the least of my worries would be some MJ (marijuana and not Michael Jackson)

That reminds me of the time that I [insert random activity] with [insert 80’s reference].
Where’s my 100 million dollar payday, I’m a comedy genius. Don’t get me wrong I love Family Guy, but the routine is starting to wear thin.

trashaddict: my thoughts exactly.

@ vdantev
Ah, you’ve summed it up brilliantly. I liked it early on, but man is this guy a hack compared to other animated writers. My husband can’t STAND the show because all it does is make 80’s references — those are not jokes, dammit!
The Venture Bros. offers many pop culture allusions, yet stays original and brilliant. God, that’s an underrated show.

Let’s see what will happen to Family Guy now that Seth is sobering up.
My guess: The show will get even worse.
Most of the time it’s just plain old lavatory-humour and sexist jokes (not even funny ones
) which maybe appeal to prepubescent boys - and stoned people, of course.
-
Ah, yes.
I hate that show. I probably speak for the minority, but MacFarlane just seems like a fucking tool.
Being a regular visitor of this site, I love me some black humor and political incorrectness—when done right. This moron thinks he’s some sort of genius because he “shocks” people.
-
I’d totally do Seth McFarlane. Maybe not now that he’s rich and all responsible, but he’s teh sexay.
Plus, I think Family Guy is funny. There, I said it.
-
I’ve tried to like Family Guy but just can’t. It’s not funny. And this guy’s the highest paid writer out there? Ugh. I’ll go look for Groening’s clip on YouTube to make me feel better.
-
Love this show. Yes, it’s $100 million deal for a show about fart jokes. But good for Seth for not smoking the dope anymore. Um…hey, Seth, can I have your leftover pot?
-
I do enjoy Family Guy but I am quite irritated that there are virtually no new episodes. He also works on American Dad and there are more new episodes of that than Family Guy.
Stellapurdy, I am right there with you. Aqua Teen Hunger Force has taken Family Guy’s spot for the best show as of right now. I get so tired of reruns on Adult Swim- I swear I have seen ALL of the Family Guy episodes cause of Adult Swim!

In case all of you can’t read, he didn’t say he was going to quit smoking pot. He just said that he smokes less of it, and I quote, “I dont smoke much pot anymore.” He said much, he didn;t say he didnt. And shame on you Jaybird for saying that he said he wont, because again that was never said.
-
I’m probably weird for this, but Seth is one of my top crushes. Have you guys ever heard him in a real tv interview? He’s smart, he has a really dry sense of humor and his natural speaking voice is sexy as hell.
And I also stopped smoking pot because it made me paranoid. Everytime I lit up I thought I was hearing sirens.
We’re meant for each other…

I love FG. I am an 18 year old girl who has never even smoked in my life lol.
-
RIP Family Guy. This is a show that is nowhere near as funny when … um what was I talking about again?
-
seth could hit it anytime, anyplace. i dont know why. men dont understand…you can have ok looks, but if you have an awesome personality, are hilarious, and have a SEXY @$$ voice, you are set for life and can pretty much nail any chick you want.
-
funniest show period. the simpsons was funny during its time but it just became irrelevant as society’s humor changed. family guy is more geared towards the “stoner” type humor but that doesn’t mean that anyone can’t enjoy it.
-
The first couple of seasons were funny, but $100 million??? They’re getting ripped off. oh and American Dad is a monstrosity.
-
Mc Farlane is a true comic genius. He see’s the world and everthing in it for what it is and laughs at it. I have sat and watched this cartoon with family and freinds and watched the truely amusing observations go flying over their heads! There are just more people that don’t get it than do, by a long way. If you watched the 100th episode interviews and have a brain that can think for itself you would understand this. Fortunatly most don’t which is why this show exists. If your still thinking that The Simpsons or South Park is much funnier then thanks for providing the oppertunity to create more Family Guy!

The Family Guy is a great amalgamation of some really genius comedic writing & imagination at work. One does not have to be blazed to enjoy and “get” the show’s dialogue. Just my two cents - by the way, great “thread bump,” Phil Thorne, I know it’s a month or so old but I hadn’t seen this story before.
-
Oh, and @ Seth MacFarland - “I don’t smoke much pot anymore. One of the last times I was stoned, I was convinced that I would die unless I kept moving my body. So I sat there, baked, waving my arms around like a crazy person.”
Best mental image EVER!!! Awesome.
