Winona Ryder at 39: humble, less crazy, ready to settle down

fp_6173494_gothamawards_sof_112910

Winona Ryder has a supporting part in Black Swan, and she’s given a surprisingly good interview to USA Today in support of the film. Winona is 39 years old now…she turns 40 in less than a year. Sigh… we’re all getting so OLD. Anyway, Winona sounds really good in this interview. There’s still a hint of the super-cool chick from the early 1990s that could do no wrong, but mostly she’s just kind of humble and reticent and interesting.

In person, she’s all jagged locks and wide brown eyes, her voice soft and dreamy. But on-screen, as a former “little princess” of a prima ballerina put out to pasture in Black Swan, Winona Ryder is all thunderous, seething fury.

The two-time Oscar nominee, who has been mostly under the radar for the last decade, makes the most of her time on-screen as Beth Macintyre, the former wunderkind of a Manhattan ballet company now relegated to toasting her replacement (Natalie Portman).

The similarities to her own career trajectory aren’t lost on Ryder. The actress broke out as a wispy, idiosyncratic child actress who starred in Beetlejuice, followed by Heathers, The Age of Innocence,Reality Bites, Little Women and Girl, Interrupted before hitting a prolonged professional dry spell.

“I had this great run when I was a teen and in my 20s, and then things got harder. That’s why I kind of love the parallel in Black Swan. It’s absurd that these girls have to retire so young. I just turned 39 the other day. And it’s like, ‘Wow, in a year I’ll be 40,’ ” Ryder says with a sigh and a smile.

Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky can’t quite grasp that the perennially young Ryder is hitting middle age.

“She’s so youthful-looking,” he says. “I liked the idea of finding someone iconic, and Winona was the first idea to pop into our heads. Here’s an actress with huge chapters ahead of her, but people remember her when she used to be very much like Natalie Portman. I liked the meta-casting idea.”

He says Ryder brought professionalism and years of ingrained knowledge of moviemaking to the low-budget, no-frills shoot.

“She befriended everyone. She seemed very down to earth and aware of where her life and career was. She’s easy to talk to. She has a childlike innocence and purity,” says Aronofsky.

And her career appears to be on the upswing after a series of flops coupled with attention for the wrong reasons. A decade ago, Ryder was arrested on shoplifting charges; she was sentenced to probation and community service after a media circus trial.

It’s not a topic she wants to rehash, preferring to focus on her renewed passion for her day job. In addition to Black Swan, Ryder co-stars in the romantic comedy The Dilemma, out in January and directed by Ron Howard.

“After these movies, which were a real gift to me, work breeds work. There were a few years where the only thing I was getting offered was (slasher movies). I wasn’t offered Saw, but those kinds (of movies), or really stupid comedies,” she says. “Right now, I’m trying to be kind of choosy. There’s a few things on the horizon.”

Ryder is firmly old-school, still reading actual books by Philip Roth.

“I still love something tactile and tangible, turning pages. I got this iPad for my birthday. I can’t imagine reading a book on it. I just can’t imagine looking at a screen and not turning pages. Books are so beautiful to me,” she says.

Indeed, Ryder seems entrenched in the ’90s, back before she could Google herself — not that she does.

“I don’t have a computer. I don’t go on the Internet. I keep hearing that you can find out anything, which is kind of too bad. Now everyone knows the salaries and the budgets and the troubles. It does take the mystery out,” says Ryder.

She’s content to spend her non-working time in her part-time home base of San Francisco, where she hangs out with artists and musicians.

“There’s a lot of cute writers up there. I gotta bag me a husband!” quips Ryder.

[From USA Today]

She sounds pretty good, doesn’t she? Is Winona still crazy? Is still a klepto? Does she ever sit around wondering if she should have stuck it out with Johnny Depp or Matt Damon? So many questions.

In another interview, Winona talked again about working with Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted. Previously, she’s talked about not being jealous of Angelina, and of how Angelina “conquered” her beauty. Now Winona says that she was disappointed when Angelina “kept her distance” while filming: “I remember thinking, ‘Oh we’re going to turn out to be great friends’. But I think she needed to be able to look at me just as the character Susanna, not as Winona, so in a very respectful way she just kind of kept her distance. I saw her at one of the awards shows but I haven’t really seen her since. I remember in the press junket for Girl, Interrupted she would just be so open about her problems and then I would come in, and everyone would think I was so boring.” Ah, back when Angelina was crazy. Good times.

  4. Vi says:

i LOVE winona ryder and it sucked that she disappeared for a while. i’ll probably watch black swan just to see her. and she looks so young for 39! i’d say she probably is still a bit crazy though but sure who cares.

  5. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

She’s a cool chick.. loved it when she and Johnny were together, they really looked good.

  6. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Winona does looks great and its good to see her acting again. I really wanna see this movie. The Black Swan looks soo good.

  7. Ron says:

She looks great–She used to live in my neighborhood and I would see her around and she was always very sweet. I hope she’s doing well. She was great in Black Swan.

  8. normades says:

Winona was the shizz back in the day. She was A-list and had her own hip personality. No young actress is like her today.

  9. Jeri says:

I hope we see more of her now – if she finds any roles she likes.

  10. mln says:

I love Winona Ryder isn’t it funny that she was as famous as Miley back in the day?? Our generation is much cooler.

  11. Obvious says:

i swear it was Rumer Willis in the picture…that being said i’m excited for tho-and hopefully this means a comeback!

  12. Camille says:

I hope she makes a great come back, she was one of my favourites back in the day.
I completely agree with her on the book thing.

  13. krissy says:

DId she ever explain why she stole all that stuff? so weird….

  14. Henriette says:

I’m thrilled she’s no longer super-skinny; her body looks FIERCE. But, time to hire a new stylist. And considering how many friends Gwyneth has in Hollywood, and how much Gwynnie hates her (Winona), I worry about her chances.

  15. mauibound says:

Good luck Winona! I’m pulling for you,

  16. The Bobster says:

Who’d want to date her, suspecting she might steal his stuff if he turned his head?

  17. anti says:

great to see her back and looking healthier too!

  18. TaylorB says:

    Henriette,

Why does Gwennie hate her? I have never heard the scuttlebutt on that one.

  19. The_Porscha says:

mln – agreed! She’s so much cooler than Miley. Oh, the days.

  20. sasa says:

She has a good on screen charisma and I like her interviews. And she’s obviously a magician considering the fact she’s able to walk in those (uber ugly) pin thin heels over holes in pic #1.

  21. OtherChris says:

Skin like that happens when you don’t trash it in a tanning bed. She’s gorgeous.

  22. Bunny says:

I think she looks beautiful I am so envious of her skin!

  23. Carrie says:

Loved her back in the day, love her even more now because of Gwyneth Paltrow.

For the poster above, the rumors have never been officially explained, but it went something like this:

Winona and Gwennie were BFFs back in the late ’90s- I think they even lived together for a while. Then they had some huge blowup. Winona gets arrested, Gwennie starts GOOP, and she writes a whole article about a former “frenemy” who went through some horribly embarrassing public thing and how deep inside Gwennie was happy that her former friend was being publicly humiliated.
The rumor is that it had something to do with “Shakespeare in Love.” That the part was originally Winona’s, and Gwennie stole the script and the part. I’ve always doubted this, because Kate Winslet confirmed that she was originally offered the part but turned it down since she didn’t want to be typecast as a “corset actress.”
Bottom line, Gwennie still carries a large grudge, and since she is one of the best connected actresses out there, Winona will have a steep uphill climb.

  24. dread pirate cuervo says:

Love her! Love her! Love her!

  25. junk573r says:

I’ve never heard of the Gwen/Wino hate either. Can anyone fill us in?

  26. mln76 says:

Carrie got it right except both claim that the other was the guilty party/ script stealer. I think it also has to do with the reason for the Ryder/Damon breakup because it all happened around the same time.

  27. mslewis says:

Carrie, I think you have that story a bit wrong.

Yes, Winnie and Gwynnie were friends and roomates but, actually, Winnie stole Gwynnie’s boyfriend and also started ugly rumors about Gwynnie (like drug rumors, etc.). People largely figured out that it was because Winona had a drug problem herself, along with a few mental problems. It had nothing to do with the script for “Shakespeare” because, as you said, Kate was the first choice for that part and Winona was never in the running.

Also true that Gwynnie did write something in her GOOP blog (years later)about a friend who had hurt her and then got into trouble and she felt “good” about that. Her point was that she felt bad about feeling good that her former friend was humiliated. People guessed right away that it was Winona.

And, true, Gwynnie has a few connections in Hollywood but Winona was no longer “hot” and then she did that shoplifting thing and that was the reason her career ended. Winona is on the comeback trail now and if she gets kudos for “Black Swan” no amount of connections that Gwynnie has would mean a thing. Only money has meaning in Hollywood. Besides, even with her connections, Gwynnie can’t get a good role. So, there’s that.

  28. mslewis says:

Oh, I forgot to say . . . Winona looks really good. The dress is butt-ugly but she looks healthy and beautiful. I’m glad.

  29. danielle says:

I always wondered about the shoplifting thing – why she never even attempted to explain that. Maybe because it’s inexplicable?

  30. gabs says:

I love her! I want her career to bounce back. Shes such a good actress and was nominated for an oscar twice (I think?). In terms of talent she definitely deserved an oscar more than Jolie at that time. I like how she admits she wanted to be friends with Angelina and was sad it didnt happen. Shes very honest and candid. Im only 19 so I just started watching old movies she was in like Heathers and Little Women and cant understand why she doesnt get more work now!

  31. Praise St. Angie! says:

    “Winnie stole Gwynnie’s boyfriend”

funny, I keep reading on here that men can’t be “stolen”.

I guess it depends on who’s doing the stealing, and who’s being stolen?…

for the record, I don’t believe that men (or women) can be “stolen”…if the guy doesn’t want to stray, he won’t. however, I DO believe that both men and women will attempt to LURE a person away from their spouse/partner, which is a pretty shitty thing to do.

EDIT: and NO, I am not pointing fingers at anyone with that statement. just my take on infidelity, in general.

  32. KateNonymous says:

I was surprised at how much I liked her in Star Trek. She had a tiny but pivotal part and did quite a lot with it.

  33. Mary says:

    Go Winona!

  34. Kim says:

39???? i think she is more like 45.

  35. mln76 says:

The argument wasn’t over a man – they were friends while they were dating the BFFs Affleck and Damon. It was over Shakespeare in Love the rumour has always been that Gwyn got the role & the Oscar due to her connection with Harvey Weinstein. Since he is infamous for helping blondes like Gretchen Moll, Blake Lively you can decide what the nature of their relationship was. And sure Winslet may have turned it down but what happened after??? Honestly it’s hard for me to believe either one is completely innocent I think it was just a bitch fight that got dirty over a role etc etc.
That being said Paltrow handled it in her usual snippy way. If she is so happy, mature etc, etc why add salt to the wound of Ryder?

  36. Kim says:

I am so with her on the reading books outside of book format! I love the feel of a book in my hand and the crisp pages of a new book or the tattered pages of a book many have read. I was given the Nook for a present a yr ago and i have yet to download a book to it =(

  37. Kim says:

Winona was an ego maniac when in her heyday. She had a bad attitude on interviews etc. This was the Johnny Depp years-but she was very young so i chalk some of her attitude up to youth. I think she got a reality check in the yrs she wasnt being offered good roles and was having personal issues and now seems on the right path & grateful for her career.

She is a good actress so m glad to see her back. I cant wait to see Black Swan!

  38. Kim says:

Supposedly Winona was called to audition (after Kate Winslet declined the role) for Shakespeare in love and told her bff at the time Gwenyth and Gwenyth went behind her back and got herself an audition or slept w Harvey to get the role.

Still cant believe she won an Oscar for that role. It was a medicore movie with medicore acting (except Joseph Fiennes) Any decent actress could have played that role-she didnt bring anything spectacular to it.

  39. a is for apple says:

a lot of people thought it was mighty generous for her to have been given that award at that time.

as if these award shows are some sort of consistent measurement of talent….

it (those shows) are really kick ass party, that’s for sure.

  40. Bodhi says:

Who did Wino allegedly “steal”? They never dated the same guy. the closest they came to that was Paltrow/Affleck Ryder/Damon.

Speaking of Matt, she couldn’t have “stuck it out” with him because he dumped her on TV, right? Told some interviewer that he was single, but didn’t tell Wino 1st. That is the only blemish on Damon’s awesomeness… And that must have sucked hardcore for her

  41. Jeri says:

Joseph Fiennes is the only thing I remember from that movie also.

Wasn’t that also around the time Gywnnie did the topless/sheer dress that left nothing on top to the imagination and she was happy to pose in it. Maybe that was for Harvey.

  42. padiddle says:

    WINO FOREVER!

She will always and forever by my icon. She always seemed so cool, and funny with a dry sense of humor.

I think she didn’t attempt to explain the shop lifting because it seemed like something she just did to see if she could do it…it’s not like she was hurting for money.
Anyway, I’ve always thought she was a very good actress, and in my opinion the bland and robotic natalie portman does not even compare. Other than that they are both pretty and skinny.

  43. padiddle says:

@Jeri – that was the next year. When she won she wore that pink frou frou thing that everyone loved. It was very prom-y I thought, but wtf it was the 90s and we were all about it.

  44. k says:

totally agree that the movie was mediocre and Gywn did not deserve an Oscar

That USA article is really an uninspiring piece. I know 5th graders who can write better that that.

  45. Gabriela says:

When I saw the thumbail I thought it was Kirsten Stewart.

  46. bananarama says:

gwynnie also stole ‘sliding doors’ from her then friend Mini Driver. it was going to be an all british cast, not so well known director etc and mini had the script and told her then good friend gwynnie all about it and then gwynnie went after it and what is a low budget british movie going to do? say no to gwynneth paltrow? i don’t think so. that film would have been straight to tv if it didn’t have good old gwynnie in it. so maybe the script stealing is the correct version of events of what happened with winona….

  47. jc126 says:

I’m trying to recall some of her history. She seemed to vacillate between being miss it-girl indie actress and “Wanna Rider”, a nickname given because of her proclivity for dating various and sundry rockers and actors, the longest relationship being with Johnny Depp, second with Matt Damon (so happy he didn’t marry her). I wonder how she feels about her former flames settling down to apparently happy married family lives? I wonder if she’d do anything different (I always wonder that about people who seem to have sort of fallen by the wayside).
Now as for the thieving – I think that is a seriously creepy thing to do, especially for someone who has enough money to buy the things she stole.
Not having a computer is kind of strange for someone her age, too.

  48. bananarama says:

the shop lifting thing was obviously a ‘cry for help’. remember jennifer capriati? shoplifting before her meltdown/breakdown? that kind of behaviour (i.e shop lifting when you have loads of money) can be a from of attention seeking – the person wants to get caught. whatever is going on in their life at that time (divorce. parents divorcing, career in downward spiral etc etc) the person does crazy stupid things to test boundaries, to get caught and get help. i’m not a psychologist but i have read about this a few times so i don’t find her behaviour creepy or weird. just a bit sad really.

  49. LittleDeadGirl says:

She looks gorgeous, my god I hope I look that good … erm ever much less at 40. I also love her quote about books. Now don’t get me wrong … my laptop is like my child … but I can’t get on board with the ipad … it’s a great invention and all but I love the tactile feel of books. Than again every time I move I have about 100 boxes of just books -lol- so maybe the ipad ain’t a terrible idea.

  50. mln76 says:

@jeri actually that’s how Matt Damon dumped Minnie Driver on Oprah by announcing he was single then he took up with Winonoa oh the 90s!

  51. Rosanna says:

She is getting to look a lot like Rumer Willis

  52. Mouse says:

I love her! She looks fantastic and sounds thoughtful and sweet. And I love that she seems to be so happy. She hasn’t messed up her looks with surgery, she’s not starving herself to look twiggy, and she sounds very serene. So refreshing and down to earth!

I wish I got to hang out with artists and musicians all day. Sigh.

  53. Mouse says:

I have tomorrow off, think I’ll stay up and have a Winona marathon. Boys, How to Make an American Quilt, Little Women…

  54. Missfit says:

Awww….WINONA!!! I loved her Reality Bites and Beetlejuice…I had always like how eccentric she was, before Johnny Depp, I liked her in Edward Scissorhands. Okay, okay, I like her in most of her movies, lol… (Dracula, Girl Interrupted and such) lol Heathers was awesome…but she was boring in Mr. Deeds, lol

  55. Granger says:

I was so happy when Winona “disappeared,” because I thought she was overrated, and mostly famous because of the whole gamine-doe-eyed-ingenue thing she had going for her. But I admit it, she’s growing on me now. She’s maturing beautifully, and choosing smaller, more interesting parts (Star Trek, and the flick she did recently about the woman who started Al-Anon) instead of trying to reclaim her youth. (Gwynnie could learn a thing or two. Her obsession with her body and her cheesy girlfriend role in Iron Man both scream to me of an insecure nearly-40-year-old who wants everyone to see that she’s still young and hip.) I hope Winona continues on this path, because it’s refreshing to see a 40-year-old woman actually acting and looking like a 40-year-old woman.

  56. Trippin says:

I agree Kim, 39???? Don’t think so. She’s shaved off a few years. She’s always has had a unique look. Looks a little like she’s on medication. That would explain the weight gain too.

  57. Fred says:

No kidding – three of the five actresses on my laminated list (c’mon, Friends fans) are Mila Kunis, Natalie Portman, and Winona Ryder. I about fainted when I heard they’re all going to be in the same movie. I’ve always dug Winona. She’s super hot and seems cool.

I will see this movie. Maybe twice.

  58. tripmom says:

Wait, if she has an iPad how does she not have a computer? Doesn’t an iPad do pretty much everything a computer does, albeit on a smaller scale?

I totally don’t buy this “I keep hearing that you can find out anything” BS. Like we’re supposed to believe that she seriously has no idea how the internet functions. Yes, Winona, you’re adorably quaint.

  59. stolen pills says:

She also had?a big drug problem (she was caught with all those stolen pills), which could have caused her to think stealing was “okay “. She was lucky to have a good lawyer- a poor kid from Compton wouldn’t have got off so easily…

  60. albeli says:

    Love her!

  61. Statler says:

Why do people find the shoplifting strange, confusing, etc.? This behavior’s hardly unknown among middle class & upper middle class women (I’m not sure about the ultra-rich or celebrities, but I don’t see why not). Usually there are underlying psychological issues.

I really liked Winona back in the day, and was always surprised she ever got arrested. She must’ve gotten caught often enough that they were sick of dealing with her.

  62. Woodsy says:

First off, I’ve always loved Winona. I’m glad to see her back and I hope her career takes off again.

She does look awesome and I wish I had her skin.

With regard to her kleptomania scandal, I believe that she was on drugs, she was desperate, and depressed. She is not the only actress to have been caught stealing. Hedy Lamarr was also popped for shoplifting http://www.east-buc.k12.ia.us/99_00/pk/hl.htm

Lastly, Gwennie can go suck it.

  63. mystified says:

Don’t like Winona or Gwynnie. Why are so many posters so sympathetic to her shoplifting? That’s thievery not a cry for help. She grew up surrounded by hippies, so it was probably her way of “sticking it to the man” — not understanding that at the time she probably made loads more money than the poor, hard working shop owner.

She still doesn’t seem to take responsibility for her behavior. May be that’s why even at age 39 she still can’t convincingly play a fully grown adult character.

At least Gwynnie isn’t an unrepentant thief.

  64. crazydaisy says:

I’m with Granger. Let’s see how she does this time around.

People with money shoplift for the thrill and to fill an empty place in themselves with excitement. Getting away with stealing gives an adrenaline rush. It’s not too complicated.

The suit/tux thing is a great look on her. The dress?! AWFUL! She looks like a dwarf in that first pic. (No offense to Little People.) Maybe it’s the camera angle…

  65. mln76 says:

Shoplifting is bad but Winonoa paid a heavy price for it. It ruined her career for years. She couldn’t make a movie because she was uninusurable and she was ostracized by most people in Hollywood.

  66. coexxi says:

I’m not a big fan of Winona. This doey-eyed look gets old. Also she has no style. That she is so down to earth now is mostly because she can’t afford to be a bitch.
But she ages well. Must be the weight gain (I’m not calling her fat, just a little bit of fat is good in the forties, keeps the wrinkles from your face way better than any botox)

  67. Lisa says:

The comparison between Miley and Winona = why I am so glad to be a member of Gen X and not Gen Y.

  68. launicaangelina says:

I freakin love Winona Ryder. Edward Scissorhands, Heathers, Beatlejuice, Dracula, and Reality Bites! She’s amazing and I hope to see more of her.

Screw Gwyneth Paltrow – she has always sucked. ALWAYS.

  69. Mary says:

She has a beautiful face but why has she allowed herself to get so heavy??? I still remember her in her twenties slim and a little gawky but essentially beautiful

  70. Nibbi says:

wow, voilà another actress who has always had AMAZING skin. (clearly i come on this site to scrutinize beauty/appearance stuff of celebrities ;)) i remember watching reality bites and feeling really indignant about how incredible her skin looked at the same time she smoked throughout the whole thing.

  71. dahlia47 says:

She looks really good for her age. 🙂

  72. Kathy says:

I think she looks fab. And I guess if she is getting mistaken for Rumer Willis, in any way, thats great. Rumer is just under half her age! so kudos on that!
I have always loved her, ever since Beetlejuice and hope for a strong and lasting comeback!
