Vanilla Ice: I broke up with Madonna after she put out ‘slutty’ Sex book

material girl colletion 2 220910
The last time I saw Vanilla Ice was on the second season of that “Surreal Life” reality show on VH1. Ice was super defensive about his former career as a punchline one hit wonder, but he seemed to come to peace with it during a karaoke session when he drove the crowd wild rapping “Ice Ice Baby.” You could tell that the guy was angry that he wasn’t famous anymore, and that he would forever be associated with his douchebag persona. He’s since launched a much less successful music career that’s more of an eclectic mix of rock and hip hop, and has a reality show on the DIY network in which he renovates a house room by room. Sounds fascinating. He is also on “Dancing on Ice” in England this season, which probably explains why he’s doing this interview.

Anyway Ice must want to earn some coverage because he’s bringing up his relationship with Madonna nearly 20 years ago. He told News of the World [via Huffington Post] that Madonna was a great lover, but that he broke up with her after she put out that “Sex” book in 1992, which he called “slutty.”

Ice Ice Baby! Back in 1990, Madonna dated then-star rapper Vanilla Ice, and he recently opened up about the relationship, calling the pop queen, “a great lover.”

“She was older than me and a great lover,” Vanilla Ice (real name Robert Van Winkle) told the British tabloid News Of The World (via IMDB). But the eight month relationship came to a halt after the publishing of her coffee table book, ‘Sex,’ for which he posed.

“But I broke up with her after she printed that book because I was hurt to be an unwitting part of this slutty package,” Van Winkle revealed. “It was disgusting and cheap. We were in a relationship yet it looked like she was screwing all these other people.”

[From Huffington Post]

Here’s a link to a picture of Vanilla Ice and Madonna from Sex that is somewhat NSFW. (although censored)

I remember when that Sex book came out. I’m so dating myself – but it was when I was in college and my friend Liz had the book. Back then it was pretty sensational, and Madonna was seen as this provocative ground breaker. Now we’re like “whatever, it’s been done,” but Madonna was one of the first ones to do it. We see her now as desperately clutching to her youth, but in 1992 she was young-ish at 34. She was still 10 years older older than Ice, who was probably just one of her many lovers. He said in 1994 that “she’s got a great body for her age.” When asked back then if Madonna was a “sexual animal,” he said “Nah, she’s like every normal girl, man. She’s very sexy, she’s hot, she’s romantic.” Ice’s story has changed in 16 years. Madonna is still dating guys in their early 20s though.

Vanilla Ice is shown on 10/29/10. Madonna is shown on 9/22/10 and 11/29/10. Credit: WENN.com

Yeah Madge could teach Kanye a thing or two about actually being shocking. I was still in high school when SEX came out I remember how everyone was genuinely scandalized and how her video was banned (this is when MTV actually played videos). But I must have blocked out the Vanilla Ice thing that’s really gross.

  2. Honey B says:

    I love me some Madge…

  3. samihami says:

“Madonna is still dating guys in their early 20s though.”

Correction: she is hiring young men that are essentially male prostitutes to keep her company and maybe “pleasure” her when she feels like it. It’s not like these 20 year old guys are looking at Grandma Gristle saying “wow! I gotta get me some of that!” It’s more likely they’re saying, “Wow! I can get money and publicity from her!”

  4. Stronzilla says:

So, he was hurt to be an unwitting part of such a slutty package? Excuse me, Slutty By Association is part and parcel of dating Madonna. Otherwise why bother? But I disagree with the unwitting part. Vanilla Ice strikes me as being at least a half-wit.

  5. guesty says:

fyi chicas…the link goes to the nypost article with leo & blake lively. thought you’d wanta know. 🙂

bet she could care less that she did vanilla ice & that he was/is pissed about her book. lol. good pr for him tho…never knew they had a thing.

  6. Kaye says:

CB, the link that’s supposed to go to a pic of Madonna and Vanilla Ice actually goes to an article about Leo and Blake Lively.

  7. constance says:

I think the link for the NSFW bewbs link is broken. It links to nyposy about Leo story.

    On topic:
I think he needs to be even less famous.

  8. Lenore says:

God, the controversy over the Sex book and Erotica album – those were the days. It was headline news. The book was sold in a silver foil shrinkwrap as if it were radioactive material. I’ve never read it but I’ve seen excerpts and, well, she was no Anais Nin, you know?

However, I had no idea she’d ever dated Vanilla Ice.

I’d bet real money that Madonna doesn’t remember that either.

  9. Celebitchy says:

@Kaye and Constance – sorry about that – the link is fixed!

  10. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    EWWW and EWWW…

That is one nasty hook up.

  11. FatJenny says:

He’s stupid…like he didn’t know who he was dating at the time. I mean, Madonna has always been provocative with sexual appeal. He acts as if he was shocked that she released that book. Who did he think he was dating? Kenny G.

  12. Bina says:

I always found it creepy that she named her daughter “Lola” after the Lola character in that sex book.

  13. mln76 says:

@Bina did you mean LOLITA(not Lola) the book by Nabokov? It’s a very risque book but I wouldn’t call it just a sex book.

  14. Stronzilla says:

@Bina, actually she named her daughter Lourdes after the town in France where there were many so-called sitings of the apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes, otherwise known as the Madonna.

  15. jessica says:

is there a place to see more of the pictures from that book???

  16. Ella says:

Lola is her nickname… her real name is Lourdes Maria, and the girl in the book is Dolores.

  17. Mizz Tickles says:

Stronzilla that was funny, I love me some morning coffee giggles 🙂

  18. dread pirate cuervo says:

LMFAO @ Vanilla Ice. For real, dude? Anyhoodle, I remember “Justify My Love” being banned from MTV & buying the tape @ this little convenience/video store from an old Indian guy who was not hip to the controversy. I didn’t think it was particularly shocking as a teenager, but I will say that I am regularly horrified by the shows on Disney & Nickelodeon that my fiance’s kids watch.

  19. becky says:

Holy shit Im SHOCKED at her body!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it was sooooooooooooooo nice! oh

  20. teehee says:

The last time I saw vanilla ice was in the frozen section of the grocery store.

So he’s jealous of things that don’t even exist? Dumbo!

  21. Someone Else says:

    @dread pirate —

“…I am regularly horrified by the shows on Disney & Nickelodeon that my fiance’s kids watch.”

Ain’t that the truth? My how times have changed.

I could see Ice being deluded enough to think that they had something special. He was pretty young, and they had been together for awhile…

    Just sayin’.

  22. fabgrrl says:

“Nice body for her age”? That there was a nice body for any age!

  23. Mia135 says:

    Vanilla Ice!?!
God, that woman would sleep with any and everyone, wouldn’t she?

  24. OtherChris says:

She had great boobs. Too bad that tool is standing behind her in the picture.

  25. hellen says:

I remember that her BFF at the time, Rosie O’Donnell, was completely scandalized and thought Madge was ruining her career. You have to imagine this being said in Rosie’s nasal whine: “Whyyyyy are you DOING THIS??!”

  26. lachica says:

@#3: i am going to sound really naive but it never occurred to me that Madonna hires young male prostitutes. of course this makes such evident sense. it just never occurred to me. i guess both parties get what they need out of the deal.

  27. Dizzy says:

I remember The Sex book was chained to the bar of a hip pool hall that I used to go to, that’s where I got to see it, Yah long time ago … good times

  28. sapphire says:

The guy had standards? That’s shocking. More shocking than “Sex” which was Madonna’s first, faint whiff of “Try”. Yes, everybody did the brown paper wrappers for a month or two, then it faded. Sort of like her film career.

  29. Relli says:

Wow i never knew they dated. That’s kind of cute though, Madonna had her very own K-Fed.

  30. Jayna says:

As a Madonna fan, I received the Sex Book for my birthday from friends. Most of it was so silly, not sexy or shocking, because it seemed contrived. I didn’t find the different sex scenes erotic at all. There was a coldness and staged feeling to the photos. There were SOME beautiful artsy nude photos of Madonna. Well, not completely nude. You never saw her vajajay, so it wasn’t what people thought. Just staged photos that looked staged. The stunning ones of her were great because she was very sexy at that period of her life, not too thin, the blond Marilyn Monroe look. I think it was a low point for Madonna doing the book and, though she will never admit it, I bet she regrets it, too.

Dumped her because of it? LOL Sure. She probably had moved on from you and then, all of a sudden, you had a problem with posing for the book.

  31. Justaposter says:

Well count me in with the group that shows our age! And looking back, that book seems so tame now.

Vanilla Ice has a show on HGTV and I watched it just to see what he has been up to, and it is a really good show.

  32. anti says:

dude has had an brow/eye lift!

  33. December says:

Madonna’s gristle arms scare me. *hides under blanket*

  34. Kim says:

That book is trash. She did it, like every other untalented thing she does, for shock value. There was no art to it at all. I dont blame him – i would have been pissed also. Then again if you hook up with no morals Madonna what do u expect.

  35. shockedandappalled says:

Dude is a loser. And, what a misogynist pig, calling Madonna’s book slutty. Plus, what a moron for caring that it “looks like” she’s with all these other guys in the book and dumping her for it. It’s called acting, dumbass.

Also, am giving him a big “duh.” Was that book really the first time he saw Madonna as having a slightly promiscuous, sexual image? Really?

At the same time, Madonna’s too good for this loser. So good riddance.

  36. MaiGirl says:

I like a lot of Madonna’s music, but I always get really annoyed when she is called an innovator. What did she innovate, precisely? Women have been exploiting their sexuality for fame for years; it’s not like she invented titillation. She kept her ear to the ground and found the right trends to capitalize on, which she would essentially adopt in toto. I got to give it to her for being the Queen of MTV for years, but that’s about the only novel thing she can claim as her own.

  37. Blaze says:

    Shut up Rob van Winkle

  38. Becky says:

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I was also in college when “Sex” came out. It’s funny now to think about how scandalous it was at the time. One of my friends bought the book only to have it stolen from his dorm room a few days later (he paraded the book around and then left his door unlocked). It was big drama at the time(:

  39. jc126 says:

I’ve only seen excerpts from it, but what I saw was icky and gross. I bet she does regret it.
She is someone who, despite formerly being all about sex, never seemed “sexy” to me. Not genuinely so, but more like she was pretending to be that way. I think people who are having a lot of good sex really aren’t boasting about it or aren’t preoccupied with the subject.

  40. Fishlips says:

I still haven’t seen that book!

  41. Anti-icon says:

This was the equivalent of the first sex tape — and Madonna was in complete control of it….so she was viewed as a pioneer in porn. She was always an opportunist. Seems like Vanilla Ice really did lose on that association, even though he was quite “gentlemanly” in the press.
