Hmm, I’m sure it won’t hurt his career at all. Brings to mind the phrase “the truth hurts”…

  2. Meow Mix says:

I thought he was hilarious. What a bunch of babies they all are.
    Go Ricky!

  3. JenJen says:

He spoke against the woman “owning the room”. Gimme a break. The guy is a comedic genius.

  4. brin says:

When you insult everyone you are going to get someone really pissed…time to go.

  5. escapee says:

“For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. Says a member of HFPA
I thought these awards were supposed to be given to the actor who best portrayed a role, not whomever sucks up to HFPA the most. A better statement would have been “We’re sadly disappointed with the way Mr. Gervais chose to represent these awards, he won’t be hosting again.” Not “We got our feelings hurt and we’re not going to let him be part of our club anymore.” Grow up and conduct your ceremony as it should be, the awards go to the best in the profession, not the pet favorites.

  6. jane16 says:

    I thought he was great.

  7. ERM says:

He was a prat! I found very little humor in his performance and thought it was cringe-worthy at best.

  8. WillyNilly says:

If the attitude of the Foreign Press is ‘we only like you when you’re kissing our ass’, I have no doubt many audience members, and media, will find something better to do that evening next year. It was refreshing to watch someone say all the things we all think….to their face no less.

    Loved it

  9. lucy2 says:

Completely agree, escapee! Shows you how they really work, huh? Not very professional.
I thought he was hilarious, though I can see how some thought he was a bit too mean. But what did they expect?

  10. hmmhmm says:

People say that stars should suck it up but does anyone like to be the butt of jokes. Not all jokes were called for like RDJ or tim allen. Gervais downplayed his career. It’s like if you aren’t in, you’re washed up and your career meant nothing. Overpaid, yes but some actors had to struggle for years to get to the position they’re in. I’m not saying all the actors are on the same par but it just wasn’t funny. If you liked brand’s sense of humor, sure but I thought Jane lynch’s acceptance speech was funny without making fun of anyone other than herself.

Yeah, and your reply would be to “suck it up right?” sure, whatever. to each their own.

  11. mln76 says:

It was funny. I think the network and whoever was in charge of the GG made a mistake in asking him back if they weren’t prepared to be ‘orrified as Ricky would say. I mean he felt confident that he didn’t want to do it again next year so he burned as many bridges as possible. They are going to be talking about this for years. WELL PLAYED RICKY.

  12. phlyfiremama says:

I don’t even WATCH the drivel that is awards shows, and even I looked his speech up on youtube. Frikkin hilarious! I gave a friend of mine an Acupuncture treatment, and he isn’t big on awards show, and HE even watched it on youtube-we were cracking up the whole session. Ricky Gervais, you have made a fan for life for calling it like it is. Does anyone remember the Steven Colbert White House Correspondants dinner speech in 2006? Look it up on CSPAN, its buried DEEP in their archives.

  13. kat says:

I thought he was awesome. Did the HFPA really expect him to behave?

  14. Praise St. Angie! says:

the most interesting thing about that Jolie gif?…

…seeing that Pitt chews gum with his mouth open. I thought only teenage girls and rednecks did that.

oh, and escapee? nice catch there. now it’s pretty obvious why they make the nominations that they do (if it weren’t already).

“I’m taking my ball and going home!”

  15. garvels says:

To be quite honest, I think the Hollywood Foreign Press should leave the Good Old U.S.A.. The last time I checked, I believe most Americans weren’t very tolerant of censorship and bullying. I certainly won’t be tuned into their garbage next year.

  16. Roxanne75 says:

Same here, didn’t watch it but kept hearing clips and how funny! I’m an even bigger fan of his now!! Huge breath of fresh air in all the stuffy blown up hot air heads of the Hollywood crowd…get over yourself people!

  17. krissy says:

    escapee:

    Excellent point! boo-hoo

  18. Roma says:

He did amazing. Sometimes the genius of humour is making people feel uncomfortable.

That being said I think the GG wants their hosts to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

  19. Rachael says:

I seriously doubt Gervais gives a shit. I’m SURE he did it on purpose to get a rise out of everyone, get some free press and all the while fully knowing he wouldn’t be asked back. He eats it up and everyone will still check out his films.

  20. carrie says:

i guess he was too funny for USA and he enough didn’t kiss RDJ’s ass(Gervais remember RDJ’s scandalous past) or Hanks’ass

  21. stepmama says:

I thought he was great, in fact I laughed several times. The problem with hollywood is that they take themselves way too seriously. Get over yourselves.

  22. lrm says:

wow-i just looked it up and wtached…
is that it??? i mean, he just took tabloid stories and made jokes.

It wasn’t even ‘the truth hurts’-
he took easy shots at people and events that have already been discussed ad nauseum…and some of the people were not even in the room!

i don’t get why it’s considered so shocking or risque…
and it was NOTHING like the stephen colbert white house dinner-THAT was truly biting and calling out the white elephant…that was the truth hurts for sure. uncomfortable and amazing.

ricky gervais was just funny and pretty harmless, IMO. the scientology gay joke was perhaps the only potentially damaging thing he said-and like i said, that has been on tabloids and all over the gossip sites lately.

I don’t know-there have been more shocking hosts of awards shows in the past….

  23. Deedub says:

Next year they’re probably going to have Jay Leno host. Bunch a’ self congratulatory douches.

  24. mii says:

    I liked Ricky… my mom did,too.

  25. bros says:

come on, he was great. no one watches to watch a host crawl up the attendees asses. he makes what would ordinarily be a very dull show very fun, and hollywood needs to grow up and be able to laugh at itself a little more. come on, you dress up and play pretend for a living. stop taking yourselves so seriously. Gervais did what he was hired to do. I seriously doubt his stuff wasnt vetted beforehand.

  26. original kate says:

    the truth hurts, people.

  27. anti says:

    shock jocks still have careers.
    he’ll be fine.

  28. nnn says:

Though i am not American i didn’t think it was too insulting, greatly ironic but not pure meannes.

However, if you run a business and your partners are foreigners, the universal rule is to immerse yourself and to know extaclty the different sensitivities and limit jokes that maybe perceived more insulting to others because of different cultural sensitivities.

And another thing which is universal too. A joke when uttered by a foreigner may be perceived more insulting than when “it’s between us”. Like French can joke and even get really nasty towards Sarkozy but will feel humiliated as a whole if it’s from a foreign person/press. And vice versa from the american part.

It’s a lesson to learn for the next time.

  29. Matt says:

This is ridiculous. The HFPA knew what they were getting- he hosted last year! And the way the head of the HFPA responded to the tiniest little jab from Ricky Gervais (a COMEDIAN) was beyond pathetic.

  30. observer says:

LOL. He’ll totally be hosting something again, and probably not very long from now.

  31. Sunday says:

Ricky was at Ellen a while ago saying that he tought they would never hire him again (after his first hosting gig) and said that he obviously did something wrong (cause they did..) So this time he was going all the way or otherwise he would´t be doing he´s job properly. He´s intention was to do “hard core” jokes.

  32. June says:

He slung daggers at famous people. Good for him.

  33. Ann says:

If the HFPA is smart, they’ll hire him again. Millions will tune in just to see what he says. A lot of this is fake outrage. They knew they were hiring Ricky Gervais and not Mr. Rogers.

  34. jingles says:

I think he was great! Ricky, keep doing what you do, I’ve been a fan of you for years

  35. mln76 says:

@ann I don’t think anyone will show up if RG is there. I think big names will scatter and no one will agree to even present. I mean he pissed off most of the Oscar winners from the last two decades. Next year it’ll be Jimmy Fallon.

  36. hairball says:

I have mixed feelings on his hosting. Yes, it was funny, but it was also cruel at times. Why humiliate Tim Allen like that or call Bruce Willis “Ashton’s dad”?

Why humiliate the head of the organization based on his age? Jokes like that, humiliating and degrading him just because he is older…..that I don’t agree with.

I’m also sick of the “he’s gay” or gay jokes as if being gay is somehow an insult or something to hide.

I think these actor awards are so pretentious and stupid and so many actors think they are God’s gift and have no idea of reality. I’m sick of it actually to a great extent. BUT – it wasn’t a roast and in some jokes, I did think he went too far.

I don’t want to sit through the whole show cringing because he humiliated someone for no reason really.

  37. willynilly says:

“The last time I checked, I believe most Americans weren’t very tolerant of censorship and bullying.” GAWD I with that was the truth.

It’s media, folks. What do we know about the media? They like to make a stink to see how people react and then find a way to work it into bigger PR. Now that I think more about it, they probably knew that he was going to do this and banked on people thinking ‘omg, Angie is soooo pissed’ for more readership.

Understand that I am a HUGE RDJ fan and even he, I’m sure, had a sense of humor about it. Otherwise he wouldn’t be so awesome in his interviews about said past.

  38. Chris says:

All his fans would’ve loved it. What a breath of fresh air he was compared to the corny humour of other award hosts like; Billy Crystal, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. If only they’d crossed to someone who was cracking up like Krammer in that final scene of the Seinfeld finale. That would’ve been gold. 🙂

The thank God I’m an atheist line was a great way to finish it off. I thought it was a nice back hander to all those cringe worthy God botherers who gush about God whenever they give an acceptance speech.

Can they get him to host the Oscars? The controversy it would create would give the ceremony a massive ratings boost.

  39. hairball says:

Oh and I TOTALLY agree with the comments about he won’t be nominated anymore for future movies. Wtf?

We all knew award shows were biased, but come on. That’s why I lost interest a long time ago.

I know everyone makes fun of Tom Cruise but honestly, sometimes the guy can really act. I thought he did outstanding in “The Last Samari” and yet he is never nominated.

The most mouth dropping was when “The Prince of Tides” was nominated for like everything BUT best director (Barbra Streisand). What movie who is nominated for everything has ever left off the director?

Also agree 100% these celebrities are so ridiculous most of the time and need to remember the only reason they can drink rose scented water and be surrounded by 20 people to ensure their life continues in a bubble is because of normal people paying to see them.

  40. Boromir's bytch says:

If he’s got everybody talking about it the day after then he’s a success. Without him there’d be no post-GG buzz at all.

  41. Fae says:

“For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated.”

Because it’s all about kissing arse and never about talent. How boringly predictable.

  42. k says:

Just realized how awesome Ricky’s suit is.

  43. WhiteNoise says:

@min76 – I could not disagree more! Apart from this being excellent publicity for the GGs, the public reaction to it has been overwhelmingly positive and means that a promised repeat of the same would draw an even bigger audience. And there’s nothing we like more than a celeb rolling with the punches and taking things in good humour. To see Hollywood’s ‘elite’ being able to laugh at themselves will do nothing but good for their image. The only people who look pathetic here are the HFPA who failed to see the joke that in the end turned out to be themselves with their petulant and very telling response.

  44. Eileen says:

Wahhhhh someone made fun of me! Please! These celebs need to get over themselves! Bunch a ego-maniacs.

  45. TeeTee says:

the celebs that support him will be the ones that are not hiding their horrible behavior!

he has celebs that support him, he will not go broke, that’s for sure..

    I love his humor.

  46. mln76 says:

@WhiteNoise if only that were true I love Ricky and his career isn’t over by a long shot but he isn’t hosting the Golden Globes next year. It will be a boring but safe host who won’t offend anyone. Even behind the scenes these stars were vocally complaining. And I don’t think you can get someone like Tom Hanks (a presenter last night) to pander to the masses he’s got 3 or 4 Oscars already.According to PopEater reps from some celebs have already called HFPA to complain AND he pissed off the president. It would be awesome if he hosted but it’s just not happening.

  47. Catherine says:

Whoever was offended needs to grow up. He was funny and spoke the truth. If you don’t like being skewered now and again, then live your life and tout your crap out of the public eye.

  48. Kim says:

What a bunch of morons these celebs are if they canet make fun of themselves. They are so clueless that they arent important, are laughable and are so easily replaceable.

Ricky Gervais was the ONLY thing good about the Globes – just look at the gossip sites and blogs today everyone thought he was hilarious!

Tee Tee – EXACTLY! I cant wait for celbs to start saying i thought he was funny and dont know what the problem is. Those are the celebs I will support by watching their shows not the ego maniac ones (Robert Downey).

  49. Kim says:

HFP are a bunch of babies with no balls if they let complaining celebs make them think Ricky was offensive and not hilarious and ban him from hosting again.

Maybe the head of the HFP is a scientologist?

    The truth hurts i guess.

  50. Liana says:

I thought these awards were supposed to be given to the actor who best portrayed a role, not whomever sucks up to HFPA the most.
    ******

    Two words: Pia Zadora.

  51. Kim says:

Maybe this is all brou ha ha to get more people to watch next year when they annouce the “very controversial Ricky Gervais will be hosting again.!” That would be smartest thing for HFP to do.

  52. buckley says:

He’s gotten quite mean since losing the weight hasn’t he?
Not in a funny way either…

  53. redlips says:

I won’t be watching next year! He was fabulous…..

Does anyone know what the numbers were for the show last night? The HFPA is a joke in and of itself!

  54. mrsodie2 says:

I am sure he did the jokes in rehearsal. The phony outrage is part of the show. Can you imagine how many would tune in next year just to hear what he’ll say? RG was the only fun part of a deadly boring show. Even the camera crew had trouble finding celebs to cut to who didn’t look bored out of their minds.

  55. LittleDeadGirl says:

If these awards were truly based on merit than yeah I might have been annoyed at his performance but come on even the HFPA admitted it’s whoever kisses their ass the most and is cool that gets to be in the big boy club. Give me a fucking break. Some of us grew out of that shit when we turned 16 so I’m glad he made fun of them and made a total farce of an already stupid show … go RICKY!

  56. WhiteNoise says:

@Min76 – Ok, he may not necessarily get the GG gig again – although it would be so in their favour if they DID ask him again for their own PR – think about it! But as a general comment, there are more than enough people in H/Wood (in front of and behind the cameras) who appreciate what Ricky brings to an event and are just as sick of the sycophancy as he is, so I don’t think this will affect him in any tangible sense. As for reps complaining, I think we can probably guess which ones were first on the phone!

  57. mln76 says:

Look I love snark and I still love the actors that I love. You can’t expect them to be something they aren’t they are people who are always comforted and whose ego is always stroked.
I was really entertained at watching everyone squirm last night I laughed my ass off. But I do have to say I doubt I would be able to sit through that and pretend to laugh and I doubt many commenters would be either.
I think that was a one time only event that will go down in history and people will be talking about in 50 years.
Obviously Ricky Gervais isn’t going anywhere. He is a comic. All that means is he isn’t getting a Golden Globe.

  58. CB Rawks says:

I found it very cringe-worthy, but he did warn them beforehand.

  59. Mairead says:

Aww, did the poor ickle people that play dress-up and pretend for a living get a booboo on their feeeewings.

    Diddums.

    🙄

  60. mln76 says:

Changing the subject looked at that last link whew she really does look like the cat lady TOO MUCH TOX.

  61. Jen D says:

Really, what did they expect when they asked him to host? He’s not a kiss-a**, and his particular brand of humour thrives of people feeling uncomfortable. He won’t get upset if people don’t laugh at his jokes. He knows people at home are laughing.

The Golden Globes are the poor-man’s Oscars, anyways. That being said, if they keep hiring Ricky Gervais they may become my favorite. I loved how he kept reading the cue cards carelessly, then would come out with some perfectly-timed joke. He’s a total bitch, but he’s not boring.

  62. Obvious says:

Kaiser! CB! Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban had another baby! Via surrogate! Faith!!!!!

sorry i’m really excited over this for some reason!

  63. Camille says:

@mln76: January 17th, 2011 at 6:25 pm: Agree. Verging into Katface Kardashian there. 😆

  64. Mare says:

They knew every word he’ll say in advance. It’s all show. And he was great.

  65. Lindsay says:

Obvious: I am with you. That was much more interesting than the RG article.

  66. GeekChic says:

    Oh, great!

Maybe instead they can hire Chelsea Handler to host and make jokes about black guys and herself being drunk all the time! How exciting that would be!

    /sarcasm

  67. Shay says:

It’s strange how British actors that were there found him funny, while Americans are offended, like they are usually offended at everything they either don’t understand or anything that offends their sense of national superiority over everything.
He basically said the truth. In Australia and Great Britain, his opening would be described as ‘taking the piss’. Which is what most of these Hollywood egos deserve some of the time because they are not only ridiculous, but over the top.
I mean, I’ll never get over Johnny Depp’s facial expression. Now finally there is an expression -most of the time he overacts so much that his face will paralyze in the same position.
Basically, Hollywood represents large scale apathy with producers and investors adding money to pointless projects while people die of poverty and lack of medical care or medical care at third world level – and this is in America!
To pay Jolie and Depp millions and millions to remake a film that didn’t need a remake but was remade because some American producers and directors deem it better in ‘American’ is bordering on racist/elitist.

  68. LOVE ANGELINA says:

So I am love in with the gif of Angie putting on lipgloss!!!!!! 😀 OMG Angie is so cute and hella sexy. I liked it and heck did you see Brad licking his lips as she did it that was hawt. Yay so happy I got to see it.

  69. JO says:

I think he is briliant!! Can’t wait for his new show on the science.. chanell idiot something the preview is so funny…

  70. WhiteNoise says:

@Shay – That’s not true re only the UK actors finding him funny. Downey Jr was the only one who got a little pissy (which surprised me, I thought he’d be more laid back than that), the rest of them laughed their assess off. I’ve never seen DeNero enjoying himself so much, Alec Baldwin was wiping his eyes, Depp was grinning, the only person who actually seemed seriously offended was the HFPA guy (the bribe jibe hit home), and probably a few scientologists. This idea that all Americans don’t get British comedy or have a highly developed sense of humour is old. A handful of people were offended and much of the press relating to this is people, particularly on news progs and in editorials, assuming outrage and that great offence was taken just because a handful of ultra sensitive humourless actors and their reps complained.

  71. Henriette says:

He looked good – he’s lost a ton of weight!

  72. Ginevra says:

“It’s strange how British actors that were there found him funny, while Americans are offended, like they are usually offended at everything they either don’t understand or anything that offends their sense of national superiority over everything.”

    Um, what?

Perhaps a handful of wealthy, self-absorbed American actors who are known for being stuck up their own [rear ends] were offended. This hardly describes all Americans. By speaking in such general terms, YOU are the racist one.

  73. hairball says:

“It’s strange how British actors that were there found him funny, while Americans are offended, like they are usually offended at everything they either don’t understand or anything that offends their sense of national superiority over everything.”

If Britains are entitled to find that sense of humor hilarious, why can’t Americans be entitled to find that sense of humor not funny?

It’s sort of going against your argument that now Americans are *ssholes because they don’t get British humor?

Wouldn’t Britain be the snob and acting superior by scorning anyone who doesn’t get British humor?

Isn’t that national superiority on Britain’s part?

  74. melanie says:

This is the only time I have ever regretted not watching an award show. So at least he has people talking.

  75. Annicka says:

Didn’t this exact same thing happen before? He was mysteriously chosen to host some huge event, was rude, and people got pissed. Why would he be chosen again, given his history?

  76. buell says:

Ricky Gervais should be hosting the Oscar Awards this year!!!

  77. Lindsay says:

So this article, with quotes from the head of the Hollywood Foreign Press, paints a totally different picture than the nameless source.
    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/top-golden-globes-exec-ricky-72542

They said the theory he was pulled or reprimanded during the awards was ridiculous. He also didn’t say he wouldn’t be asked back. Another representative said:
“We loved the show. It was a lot of fun and obviously has a lot of people talking. When you hire a comedian like Ricky Gervais, one expects in your face, sometimes outrageous material. Certainly, in this case, he pushed the envelope and occasionally went too far. The HFPA would never condone some of his personal remarks. Overall, however, the show was among the best we’ve ever had and we were pleased.”

  78. endoplasmic_ridiculum says:

    ahahahaha Pia Zadora!!!

    Seriously good one @Lina

Ricky is super offensive but that’s what HE’S KNOWN FOR.

I love that everyone got mad… shows what they think of themselves…Total narcissists!

  79. Jane Q. Doe says:

I don’t care that he made fun of celebs. The problem was…he just wasn’t funny doing it.

  80. Adrien says:

Nah! He’s British. Anyone who’s seen a typical Brit award will say Ricky’s tame.
Except for that joke on RDJ, he was spot on. But then again, RDJ turned his life around to make Iron Man movies and the Sherlock Holmes one, then yeah, he might deserve that biting joke.
    Well done, Mr. Gervais.

  81. wunderkindt says:

Loved the scientologist joke! Ricky rocks!!!

  82. Ruffian9 says:

    I really don’t think he gives a s**t.

  83. Hmmm says:

Spot the narcissist- they can’t take a joke. Go Ricky!

  84. nnn says:

I don’t care about his jokes but then again i wasn’t the object of his jokes.

I don’t think it is fair to call it narcissism because someone can’t take the joke, until those jokes are directed to you or someone you are close to.

Everyone has his/her sensitivity and many in here were offended when certain actor/actress said something much less hurtful towards another one.

Again, I am not offended by his jokes but i can understand that some who were the bottom of his jokes, in front the world may get offended because if it was any of us, even in front of a less tinier audience we may very well get offended too wether we are stars or not.

So i will not say to them to take it lightly cause they supposedly deserve it, cause they are rich and should take a joke or a jab directed to them with a smile on their face. They also have a sensitivity just like me and since i am not sure that i will have take it lightly myself, i won’t blame them for being offended wich is a totally natural instinctive reaction.

  85. GirlyGirl says:

    Who the eff cares?

Everyone knows the Globes are complete bullpoo.

Good for you Ricky, give em hell!

  86. jane says:

Looks like I’m not the only one that noticed how weird and different Megan Fox looked like. I didn’t even know it was her until I saw her name captioned below a photo.

  87. lili says:

    He is GREAT!

  88. redlips says:

And if Popeater says it, then it has to be the Gospel…

  89. CeeCee says:

I don’t think it was the place to convey gossipy piss-taking humour. Yes, the actors all take themselves way too seriously and it’s a big load of wank, but it’s an awards night, it’s their night. He shouldn’t be sledging them so openly unless it’s his own show.

Absolutely effing hilarious, just not the right forum!

  90. Someone Else says:

It was the first time an awards show was entertaining.

The truth hurts (and is absolutely hilarious coming from Ricky).

  91. vic says:

Oh yes, Shay, we just don’t get it, we superior Americans. Please you’re obsessed. Most of RG’s stuff was hysterical but he did go too far a few times. “Time and Place” as you Brits say. Read an interview with Hugh Laurie once and he talked about loving it here but missed all the meanness back home. Different cultures. And I don’t think Robert Downy Jr. was grumpy, he outwitted Gervais. Noticed he disappeared for awhile after that. RDJ was the funniest all night.

  92. Eve says:

Please, he’s the only reason why I’ve been watching the Golden Globes recently.

I wasn’t going to watch this year because I didn’t think he was going to host it. But then I saw him telling Ryan Seacrest that he would do it again (during those red carpet thing E! usually does). So I switched to TNT just to see him and, as usual, he didn’t disappoint me: I have always loved the fact he doesn’t spare anyone.

I also think they’re (at the HFPA) are loving the attention and will probably call him again next year.

  93. lachica says:

they couldn’t pay for this kind of publicity. the entire show is already available on hulu. i hope he comes back next year and hits them even harder. he was hilarious.

  94. Shay says:

@Whitenoise, if the idea was old, then why is practically every single British comedy converted for ‘American tastes’, ranging from The Office to Little Britain (becoming Little Britain ‘USA’)?
As for the actors laughing, they are ‘actors’, they will laugh. Haven’t you heard of the term nervous laughter? When people laugh when they are uncomfortable?
But when things are pointed out, then yes, some Americans get upset about it.

FYI Vic I’m not American, nor do I care if Americans are offended. The facts are, that networks always rework something that is European – probably because they think they can do a better job – even though it turns to shite. Like The Tourist, and practically every remake that relates to an original work outside the US. Even The Ring was crap. As was Le Me In.
It’s as though American film studios cannot handle other countries making good films.

  95. moviegoer says:

A grain of truth in every single joke Ricky made last night. Yes, the characters in Tourist were not three dimensional and what else not off the top of my head lol but yeah Ricky was like what’re you gonna do, fire me? well, go ahead, I don’t give a rat’s arse, the whole time and I enjoyed the show partly thanks to him

  96. Crash2GO2 says:

@Shay: “It’s strange how British actors that were there found him funny, while Americans are offended, like they are usually offended at everything they either don’t understand or anything that offends their sense of national superiority over everything.”

    Generalize much?

Also, Depp has sort of specialized in camp, and the movies he does generally call for that role for him. I take it you have never seen him in a serious role, and are just going by Pirates of the Caribbean? *g*

  97. Crash2GO2 says:

Good heavens, I just saw the photo of Annette Bennings – she is only 52, but she looks 60. WTF happened to her??

  98. Squirrel says:

Would love to see Ricky do the VMAs or some other music award show- if the actors have big egos, it’s nearly nothing compared to musicians (Kanye, Gaga, Madonna, James Blunt anyone?).

Americans and Brits both have sense of humour, it’s usually just of a different kind. British humour gets away with so much more just because what is being said is not taken that seriously (as also most of the people tend to engage in self-depreciating humour without fearing that the other side actually does think less of them). I think it’s a shame successful productions outside of the US are then ‘rehashed’ for the US audience, as if the viewers were not smart, tolerant or even literate (since some would require reading subtitles, which most of the world is used to) enough to watch the original (The Office, for example or the complete catastrophe they made of Kath & Kim, a brilliant Aussie show that got cast in the US with Selma Blair of all people as the supposedly fat and unattractive daughter Kim -WTF?!). Am curious (but will try to keep open mind) as to how the film(s) of the worldwide popular Stieg Larsson books will turn out, since the 3 original (swedish) films were brilliant and raw.

If you watch Ricky’s show called Extras – check out the clips on youtube – you will see quite a few actors (Orlando Bloom, Kate Winslet , Ben Stiller just to name a few) essentially playing ridiculous versions of themselves. So yes, the relaxed actors with a sense of humour do exist, on all continents 🙂

  99. Rose says:

I don’t care who he slags off, but he’s boring and a one trick pony. Give it up Ricky, The Office was long ago.

  100. piedlourde says:

I love Ricky Gervais’ and Stephen Merchant’s The Office and Extras as well as their XFM show with Karl Pilkington.
I don’t like Ricky’s stand-up as much (his cheeky “I’m so great” schtick gets a bit tiresome) but I have great respect for the fact that the man is fearless and won’t hesitate to brush a few stuffy people the wrong way.

And that Colbert speech? I love Stephen Colbert with all my heart and I want to bear his patriotic God-fearing children of Truthiness.

  101. ViktoryGin says:

As some have stated, the HFPA new EXACTLY what they we’re gettig into. Convenient that they hire the subversive wit for street cred when it pays off for them, but piss their pants whe they decide that he takes it to far. So hypocrtical. That’s like letting a cock-fighting german shepherd out of the kennel and then having the nerve to get pissed off then he actually kills the poodle.

    @ Shay,

While I do understand what you were saying in your first post, it was really American Hollywood actors that had a problem with his routine more than Americans in general. I honestly don’t think that Americans “don’t understand” British humor so much as Americans unconsciously expect people to protect our feelings by not causing undue offense. And it’s a subtle process. For example, in a British program if a role calls for a homely, fat girl who’s ugly as sin….in a Brit program, she’s is actually going to be was is generally agree upon as ugly and fat. And the obvious will be stated. On the other side of the Atlantic, however, they would try to mitigate the fact that she’s ugly and fat and would never hire someone that was actually the embodient (no pun) of the truth. Why? No one wants to make it obvious that such and such actress is really ugly and really fat.

    Anyway, cheers!

  102. Shay says:

    Crash2GO2:
You may think it a generalization, but I’m not the one creating remakes to suit American tastes and ‘humour’.
I don’t see an abundance of American audiences requesting original British television shows from television networks; they take what they are given. American TV networks and film studios always have to remake everything that is either British, Asian or Australian for that matter, and remake it very badly and when someone like Gervais points it out (re: Tourist), then they have a tizzy fit about it.
    Big whoop.
I’d rather drill a hole through my head than have to watch Depp and Jolie pretend to have chemistry.

  103. normades says:

The fact that so many people are taking offense at Shay’s comments totally proves his/her point.

    Sorry *.*

  104. Zelda says:

    @Shay:
North American (Canadian) here, living abroad with 2 Brits:

1)WhyTF would they show “Little Britain” as-is in the USA? The jokes are culturally specific. You expect someone from Ohio to know or care or laugh at chavs and such? My British fiance spends half the quiz shows each week explaining the cultural references. And I’ve lived in several countries and speak several languages, so I’m not culturally-sheltered. Some things are region-specific. I, in turn, pause NAmerican shows every 10 minutes to explain stuff to him.

2)I am absolutely annoyed by the British conception that Americans don’t “get” their humour. I’m usually spared this criticism because I’m not actually American and I regularly enjoy British comedies, but if I hear one more self-important Brit talk about how superiour their version of such-and-such a film or tv show is I will lose my f*cking mind.

Get over yourselves. They get you, okay. You are not of some greater intelligence level. They just don’t find you funny. Get over it.

That said, it looks like Americans by and large did find Gervais funny. Oh my GOD?! how will you feel superiour to them now?!

  105. Shay says:

Normades, it is proof. Talk about people being on tenterhooks.
Anyway, there are worse things happening in the world, but this incident with Gervais only proves that the self centredness. Now I’m sure that there are other pressing issues in the world than actors being offended.

Zelda, I can only refer to the responses to some of my comments as proof that there is a difference. I’ve found that if anything American is criticized, then there is this ridiculous backlash. Because I’ve mentioned some things, some commenters presume I’m British. I’m Australian and have watched a lifetime of British and American shows. As to whether either one is better. No. But they are different. Just as there are nuances in culture, there are nuances in humour. For example, Most American sitcoms revolve around situational humour, whereas many British comedy shows are not situational humour. There is a difference. Then there is the concept of irony and how it does lack in many American comedies.

  106. Heather says:

    Zelda: I love you.

  107. mymy says:

Hollywood can dish it out. But it looks like they can’t take it. I mean they hate to be thought of as human. They are “so special”. Robert Downey came off as a big fat baby. The award show is a joke. I loved Robert Deniro.Comedy is not always PC. So could all the PC people just hide.Cover your ears and say lallalalala I am not listening. Because you are a bunch of self righteous babies

  108. gabs says:

    @Shay

Im American and loved it. LOTS of American actors were laughing like Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, Johnny Depp, even Robert Deniro and more. You are only seeing what you want to see because you’re biased. Its only the spoiled brats that had an issue with him and even Britain has spoiled crusty people as well! Dont over generalize like that.I do think its silly for Americans to remake everything, it worked with the office but not skins. I dont always like the remake versions and would have been happy to have the originals played here BUT the reason its done is because of culture differences. The humor doesnt always work if we dont get the references and slang terms. Also the location/setting needs to be relatable to the masses. GET OVER IT! Stop making assumptions. You have issues.

  109. crtb says:

I never watch that show and he is the reason I watch it this year, he didn’t disappoint. He did exactly what everyone knew he was going to do. Stop acting so surprised people! Please let him host the oscars!!!!

  110. Judy says:

He kept me awake–hard to do since I get up at 5:00 A.M. everyday. He’s a genius.

  111. hairball says:

@Shay: You’re missing the whole point that you completely lose credibility in your original post.

Who the f*ck cares if Americans get or don’t get British humor? Your point appeared to be that because Americans don’t get British humor Americans lack brain cells and think they are superior.

So again, why does your ‘national superiority’ comment not apply towards Britain when they are disgusted that (some)don’t get British humor?

    You completely collapse your point.

As the other poster said, each region in the world is different and has different ideas of humor. Good god.

If you’re going to make an argument, check your actual points that support said argument.

  112. hairball says:

@Shay: In this case, it has nothing to do with “if America is criticized there is a ridiculous back lash”

-which god, during the Bush era, I was about puking with you could say nothing against, not America, but the Republicans’ version-

it has to do with a poster coming on and saying because some Americans don’t get a certain brand of humor they are simpleton because it didn’t come from America.

Who really is being the simpleton in thinking your brand of humor has to be liked by everyone or there is something wrong?

God, get over yourself and look up the word “ironic”.
